Jets have plenty of leverage in stare-down with Packers over Aaron Rodgers

A debate has been raging over the past two days regarding whether the Packers or the Jets (or both, or neither) have the better of the leverage when it comes to the Aaron Rodgers stalemate. The Jets have more than many realize.

While they won’t at this point credibly pivot to a Plan B and turn their backs on trading for Rodgers, what’s the hurry to get a deal done? If the Packers want to wait until the draft to finalize things, so be it.

Rodgers doesn’t need to be present for the early weeks of the offseason program. He’d probably prefer not to. This gives him the perfect excuse — he’s not on the team yet.

He already knows the offense, given that his former coordinator in Green Bay will simply dust it off and install it. The challenge isn’t to teach it to Rodgers but to the rest of the team.

So if Green Bay’s play is to slow play this thing, the Jets should say, “Fine. We’ll wait until the draft. Hell, we’ll wait until after the draft. We’ll even wait until after June 1, so that you’ll be able to spread the cap charge over two years.”

If Rodgers is willing to gather his future teammates for a get-acquainted session or two of pitch-and-catch, nothing stops them from doing it. Rodgers knows new Jets receiver Allen Lazard, and Lazard can get the rest of the skill-position players lined up to coincidentally be at a field not far from wherever Rodgers wants it to be.

It actually helps the Jets for the Packers to wait, since that could serve only to make Rodgers more focused, determined, and motivated to have the kind of season that makes the Packers regret not sitting back and letting him retire — if he was truly 90 percent down that path until he concluded that the Packers had changed their tune about wanting him back.

Waiting until after the draft also allows the Jets to fashion a trade package for 2024 based on the team’s success, or otherwise, in 2023. A conditional pick for 2024, a conditional pick for 2025. And if the pick in 2024 ends up being a first-rounder, it likely will end up being lower than this year’s No. 13 overall selection.

Yes, the Packers currently want New York’s first-round pick for the upcoming draft. What will the Packers do if the Jets hold firm? Unless and until Rodgers retires or is traded, the Packers are on the hook for nearly $60 million to Rodgers in 2023. Will the Packers eventually tell Rodgers they expect him to show up for training camp if a trade isn’t done?

Put simply, how big of a distraction are they willing to let their desire to hijack the Jets become?

That’s the question the Jets should be willing to force the Packers to answer.

So hold firm, Woody. Don’t blink. Bide your time. Show the Packers you’re not desperate. If you wait just long enough, it’s the Packers who may be.

  1. Packers can’t help bungle their famous QB’s exits … this is what Jordan Love can look forward to. Hope he’s taking notes.

  2. Yep – if the trade doesn’t happen, the Packers will be far worse off than anyone else. Rodgers will get $60 million and the Jets will be no worse off than they were before. So the Packers’ leverage is mostly imaginary.

  3. To ask for a #1 pick in return for the QB who won two of the past three MVPs is a “hijack”? Well, okay. I guess the Packers are just meanies. But if you don’t ask, you certainly won’t ever get it.

  4. Tell him he’s not being traded and it’s time to retire. Don’t sign a 60 million dollar deal if you don’t want to go through with it.

  5. Rodgers uses the springtime to search the world for his annual, new spacey, celebrity girlfriend. It’s like the mating rituals that animals go through.

  6. The Packers will not pay Rogers $60 million this year under any circumstances. If the Jets wanted, they could probably hold out and give them almost nothing in the trade. The Pack will wait until they can spread the cap hit and then take the best deal the Jets give them.

  7. please, packers can hold onto him until 1st game in September. Then they can cut him. Then the Jets have to worry if the 49ers or some other team jumps in the fray. The cap ramifications are no different in September than they are now. I hope Packers cut him rather than get a 4th round draft choice that is a slap in their face. This isnt Favre.

  8. LOL, keep trying Florio. Jets have no leverage. Pay the piper. You want him- give up a #1 plus….GB will deal with Rodgers if they have to. They will not give him away. Nor should they. Packers will pay Rodgers and “be no worse off than before”…THANKS Kevpft! Jets, well let’s say they will be even WORSE off than before.

  9. Packers hold the cards. They can send him to any team after June first. Or he can retire.

  10. Why anyone wants to trade for a QB who’s year to year about retirement is beyond me.

  11. So hold firm, Woody. Don’t blink. Bide your time. Show the Packers you’re not desperate. If you wait just long enough, it’s the Packers who may be.

Man, almost as if this article was written by a Viking fan that doesn’t want the packers to have extra draft picks

  12. Packers need to thank the browns or they would be the laughing stock of the NFL

  13. I kept saying the jets have upper hand. They want Rodgers but dont need Rodgers. couls find a wb innthe draft snd say screw it packers he is all yours.

Tell us danny, what team would be willing to pick up the 60 million tab the packers are stuck with. Why would anyone retire with that much cabbage on the table.

Like who? Mark Sanchez? Sam Darnold? Zach Wilson?

  16. The Packers have two starting caliber QB’s under contract.

    The Jets have none.

I prefer teams loaded at the most important position on football.

  17. Funny how we have yet to hear what it is that the Jets have actually offered and what they feel is a fair trade. I do not see anybody writing about that amongst the countless articles like this one

  18. this depends on who of gb and rodgers wants out more. if rodgers then packers have the leverage because gb wont pay a dime if he retires. if gb then rodgers can suit up with a bad attitude and laugh all the way to the bank.

  19. Actually the Packers are going with Jordan Love regardless. They would absolutely sit on this until the Jets cough up the comp because their next best options include Joe Flacco. Teams print money and the Pack will not give in and know the Jets have totally banked on Rodgers as other QBs went elsewhere.

  20. In a way, they’re both playing themselves. The jets have signed Lazard and Hackett with the assumption it would lure Rodgers, and it seems to have worked on that front, but now the packers are holding out for the maximum compensation (whether it’s warranted or not).

On the flip side, the packers are done with him and it’s very public. With that cat out of the bag, they only have one way to offload his contract and for them to dig in like this is ridiculous. There’s no way they want to be on the hook for that salary just for him to either ride the bench or retire. And in the case he sticks around, what have you done to Loves psyche by promising him that he’s the man only to about face at the last minute?

  21. The problem with the Packers is they don’t have an actual owner. Which basically means there’s nobody to crack the whip and get things done

  22. If I were the Jets I’d tell Green Bay to keep Rodgers and we’ll just draft one of this years draft’s quarterbacks .

  23. The Packers are going to bungle this and pay Aaron 60 million to watch Jordan Love fail out of spite.

The whole front office should be fired.

  24. What if Aaron Rodgers shows up at Packers OTA’s just out of spite. Can the packers exclude him? What happens if he gets injured? How do they keep Jordan Love become the new face of the franchise and not hving the whole thing become a circus?. I think Aaron Rodgers may have some leverage.

  25. Bob drives a crappy car. He tries to go on a vacation every year, but his crappy car breaks down and never gets to his destination. Bob walks onto a car dealer lot and sees nothing but more crappy cars. Then he spots an old dependable Camaro. He jumps up and down waving his arms screaming in joy as he looks it over. Salesperson watches from a distance and approaches Bob and the camaro. Bob says he’ll take it on the spot! Would the salesperson a) try to get the most he could for the camaro, or b) give it away for almost nothing.

This scenario happens every day in real life. It’s how the deal works whether we like it or not. If u have no other options and u act this way, the salesman will try to milk u. U can’t start negotiating a lower price. If the jets would have at least PRETENDED to be “kind of interested” they’d have some leverage

Loves career consists of 600 yards passing with 3 TDS and 3 interceptions. He may be starting caliber QB on my nephews pop warner team.

  27. I have to disagree here. The Packers may have to pay Rodgers $60M but there is no way Rodgers would be willing to sit out the entire season. I would almost guarantee he will play. Then you have to remember the Packers can also Franchise him as well. It’s not like he can just walk away this year unscathed.

If i’m the Packers, I want the Jet’s 1st round pick this year + Multiple picks down the line. Jets need to be smart and get a multi-year deal from Rodgers.

  28. He turns 40 this year, he’s “90%” close to retirement, and he sucked last year. And the Jets are the only team interested in him with that contract. In no universe is he worth a 1st round pick. Green Bay needs to accept that it missed the boat and is selling low.

  29. If Garapollo hasn’t signed, call the Raiders offering Rodgers for a 2.
Or call the 49ers and Rodgers is theirs for a 1st.
Let Jets owner deal with the fans, players, and media.

  30. Would love to see Jordan Love request a trade postseason after witnessing GB mistreat one of their greatest players in franchise history

  31. I was wondering if the subject title was a misprint? A joke? Sarcasm? The Jets not only have no leverage at all, they are in panic mode. I truly believe Green Bay will hold the Jets hostage, but not due to their dislike for them. It’s Aaron. Aaron and his arrogance has caused this. His McAfee rant. His passive aggressive oh I love everyone in Green Bay crap. If I’m the Packers, every time the Jets say ok we will agree to that, I demand more. Aaron saying it was Green Bay who decided to move on is a lie. I used to admire Aaron, but he’s developed into a Kardashian almost overnight. And like a Kardashian, once you push close to 40, it’s not cute anymore.

  32. …… except Woody IS desperate. The Jets have been playing second fiddle in Gotham for too long. There are big egos involved here.

Rodgers current contract pays him 110 million dollars through 2024. There will be no franchise tag. I would love to be “scathed” for that amount of money.

  34. I love watching the Packers get beat, be it during the season or the off season, it’s fun to watch!

  35. Keeping Rodgers is more detrimental to the Packers than trading him and the GM has already admitted that… not sure what leverage he thinks he has.

lol – not really…i mean, if they wanna blow $60m in cap space and get nothing and screw their team, sure, they could do that.

favre and rodgers both won 1 SB with GB…sure, you can call out rodgers mvps and stuff, but those are meaningless really…all about the rings.

  38. Both MVP seasons were followed by home playoff losses. The 49ers beat Rodgers without scoring an offensive TD. Fans can’t expect him to run the gauntlet of the AFC. He will pee down his leg come January. Just like always. Like I said yesterday, there are no Chicago Bears waiting for him in the AFC East.

  39. Just another example of arrogant leadership. Grow up & stop trying to screw each other over. Compromise for the benefit of all – this is the most underutilized quality of good leadership.

Yes the Packers have 2 QB’s capable of missing the playoffs on roster. The Jets also have QB’s who missed the playoffs last year. But you know what else they have? A QB who played in a game where they beat both of your “starting caliber Quarterback’s” by 3 scores.

  41. You lost us at “If Rodgers is willing to gather his future teammates for a get-acquainted session or two of pitch-and-catch…”

The 49ers do not have a first
Let the packer FO deal with a disgruntled rodgers

  43. Nah, the Jets literally have zero leverage, and thinking they do would be part of why they’ve been garbage for the better half of three decades. Who cares if the Packers retained Rodgers’ contract? It’s a rebuilding year and they aren’t going to sign anyone significant anyways, and can still compete for the division title with their current roster. There are plenty of other teams who would be interested in a Rodgers trade if the Jets want to try and rip GB off. The Jets can have fun with Zach Wilson and Mike White and an at best 8-9 season.

  44. I like how we keep saying how a motivated Rodgers is dangerous, without mentioning how unmotivated he must’ve been last year. It’s a shame that no one outside of GB cares that he forced his way out with his play.

  45. Packers have the upper hand folks , and this is why …..they can either stick with Zack or draft a qb at #13 , the 2 decent qb’s will be gone by then , there are your 2 choices……in the end I feel the Jets will give us their 1st rounder this year , and one of their tight ends this year…..it wint be a haul because Rodgers will only play a year or 2 at the max

  46. I’m sorry… but why do the Jets have leverage? Because Rodgers says so? It was only a few years ago Kawhi Leonard said he wanted to go to LA…. he was traded to Toronto when the offered more. Before anyone says “but the Packers owe it to him…” 1) Kawhi Leonard did the same, if not more for the Spurs than Rodgers did for the Packers (went to multiple finals) 2) just 12 months ago the Packers gave him the largest contract in NFL history to appease him 3) Why should they eat a massive cap hit without getting the most they possibly can? If some team offered the Packers what they actually want… they should take it? Why not?

  47. Other teams could get involved with Rodgers if this goes into June. New England, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Washington, or Atlanta could all make a run for Rodgers after the asking price goes down.

  48. Sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself that the Jets hold all the leverage. The problem with that statement is that it’s simply not true at all. The fans and media are already growing impatient. The longer this drags on the worse it is for the Jets. Anyone saying anything different is simply lying.

  49. Which party is the most EXHAUSTED with the Rodgers saga?

    A. Packers fans
    B. Jets fans
    C. Football fans in general

  50. Or if no deal is in place the week before the Draft the Packers could trade Love and Draft a QB for 2024 and play behind Rodgers for a Year! How about those New York apples?

  51. The Packers don’t have to get rid of Rodgers at all. Murphy said it from the start. If things don’t work out the way the Packers want, he will be their starter next season. People (including Florio) are forgetting that Aaron isn’t demanding a trade. The Packers said they want to trade him, and Aaron is accepting that. If the Jets want to hold onto their first-round pick and run it back with Zach Wilson, have fun!

  52. GMFB already covered this. The Packers can wait up until 9/1 based on the language on the contract before they have to do something. I don’t think it will come to that, but they are making all these contract adjustments to save cap. They could just say screw it… #12 is here sulking in the corner. And the Jets won’t have any QB unless they draft one. No one is talking about that option. He’ll likely be a Jet – who knows what the compensation is, but GB has options.

  53. I don’t see how the Packers have ANY leverage in this situation.

They have a player that CANT be a Packer in 2023.

  54. The jets don’t have leverage, Rodgers does. All he has to do is show up to the facility to work out or show up to voluntary OTAs.

  55. The packers are going to browns this up. They seem to think they hold some leverage here. The only ones that would really be hurt are the packers, owing a guy 60milkion who doesnt want to be around your team is a recipe for disaster

  56. There seems to be a lot of wacky notions about Aaron’s contract and the leverage the Packers have.

The Packers cannot cut him. Go to Over the Cap and see what happens if they do. He has a guaranteed salary of $59 million this year. The Packers can convert that to a bonus instead of salary before Game 1, but they can’t do that before they trade him or they take the full hit on the bonus.

The Packers must trade him before Game 1. If he is on their roster on Game 1 and the option bonus hasn’t been exercised, his salary guarantees and his cap number soars. And the Packers will have to cut a large percentage of the team.

Have the Packers signed any free agents? No. Why? It increases the urgency to get rid of Rodgers. If the Jets pivot to another player – say, Lamar Jackson – then Baltimore will not take Rodgers under that contract. Anyone taking him must be able to accommodate his guaranteed salary and the rest of his contract.

Cooler heads need to prevail in Green Bay and the Packers need to do the trade. Because the Packers also need to make a decision on Love’s 5th year option. Rodgers isn[‘t going to retire. So the Packers need to get this done.

  57. The Jets have some leverage. But the Packers also have some leverage. I would hate to be NYJ and all of a sudden airway decides to offer up a sweet package.

  58. Jets should wait for after the draft so the Packers gets draft picks based on 2023-24 results. And the Packers know it is not to their advantage….

  59. Loves career consists of 600 yards passing with 3 TDS and 3 interceptions. He may be starting caliber QB on my nephews pop warner team.
So you would rather Zach than Love? he’s that bad? Jet fans ….. y’all make dumb and dumber sound like Shakespeare

  60. Rodgers cannot be cut. The cap number everyone hears – $31.6 million – assumes the Packers convert the 2023 salary to a bonus.

If Rodgers is cut before June 1, his cap number soars to $99 million ($40 million in unamortized signing bonus and the 2023 guaranteed salary).

If Rodgers is cut after June 1, his cap number soars to $75.3 million ($24 million moves into the 2024 cap).

If the option bonus is not exercised and Rodgers is on the Packers roster by the kickoff of Game 1, Rodgers’ cap number would be that same $75.3 million number.

The Packers cannot exercise the option before they trade him, because then the cap number jumps back to $99 million.

The only option is to not exercise the option bonus and then trade him, either before or after June 1. The Jets know this. The closer we get to Game 1, the greater the leverage the Jets have. Unless the Packers decide they want to keep Rodgers and he agrees to play.

And by May 1, the Packers need to decide on exercising Jordan Love’s fifth-year option. The Packers need to deal him for whatever they can get and move on. Rodgers will not retire to bail them out.

  61. Of course, the Jets will just draft a quarterback, since that’s worked so well for them in the past 😁 One thing no one has mentioned: has he talked to Joe Namath about wearing #12, or does Aaron not want to share a number with a legend that threw so many interceptions?

  62. To the people saying the Pack can simply hold onto him until the season starts-they “could” but at what point?

They can cut him-still have to pay him though unless somebody wants to pick up the balance of the contract.

They can’t have him on the sidelines as backup. That would destroy Love. Each time he threw an incompletion, the fanbase would be screaming for #12.

Even worse is going to be if Love sucks. Like Ryan Leaf bad once he actually sees the field. You think the fanbase is gonna be quiet with #12 sitting on his couch yet collecting $60 million.

Basically the only “leverage” the pack has is paying him $60 million to do absolutely nothing and stay at home. The GM of the Pack is not a MENSA member, but nobody is that dumb.

Take what you can get and move towards the future. Pack have already expressed a desire to move forward and torpedoed the relationship.

Jets can simply sit back and wait for the phone to ring. Set a date of day before the draft or you are moving on towards a future without Aaron being in NY. Will end up being settled for a second this year and a conditional fourth next year (moves to a third if Jets make playoffs and a second if they make the SB)

  63. I think the Jets should tell the Packers GM to pound sand and walk away. People forget this deal gets the Packers out from under a HUGE cap hit and that alone is worth at least one significant draft pick the Jets shouldn’t have to give them. Seriously, strictly in terms of what that cap is worth, it’s not too far off the Brock Osweiler deal the Broncos made a few years back. Combine that with the fact Rodgers will play maybe two years more…certainly an absolute max of three years, the Jets shouldn’t even consider giving up more than maybe one 1st round pick and a mid-level player. The Jets taking on Rodgers contract is a huge commitment for them.

  64. If I’m Rodger’s I’m not going to do the Packers any favors! I call Hackett and tell them don’t give the Packers more than a 5th rounder and make them pay half my salary! What’s the Packers choice then? They have to cut him! Like Carr did the Raiders! Then he can sign with the Jet’s and it won’t cost them anything!

  65. Rodgers becomes 40 in 2023. He’s not 33 like Matt Stafford was when he was traded to the Rams. Plus, his skills are diminishing fast. He doesn’t respect his coaches, freely giving public advice to Green Bay coaches last year that they had to “simplify” the offense, among other jabs at the front office.

Rodgers has become a bitter old man at age 39. He’s an organization splitter and a coach killer. The Jets should look elsewhere because with Rodgers, they won’t be getting a leader. They’ll be getting an ego.

  66. NY Is all about losing out on Jeopardy. AR wants to boost his national profile, as he believes himself a star that was born to host something. He loves GB, but recognizes what NY can do for his life after football.

  67. I blame the Carolina Panthers. They gave up a first, 2 seconds and a starting WR to move up 8 spots for the chance to take an unproven prospect. Why wouldn’t the Packers get at least a first plus extra for a 4 time MVP, even if he is old and expensive. If he plays 3 more years, it’ll be about the average amount of time NFL players last for their entirety of NFL experience and probably way more out of him than most of the first round draft picks.

  68. To the Packer fans who think that GB has the leverage, tell me the last time a back up QB was paid 60 million dollars? Do the Packers not have to follow the salary cap rules? The same idiot that signed Rodgers to the second worst QB contract in the NFL, is now the guy trying to hold up the trade, that the parameters were agreed to in principle before the Jets even spoke to Rodgers. Bad Ju Ju there GB. That kind of stuff filters through the league, other GM’s are taking notice. Jordon Love, he’ll be getting booed out of his starting job by week 12, Zach Wilson style.

  69. Murphy said…wort case scenario Rodgers is back with GB.
How many teams wish they had a HoF QB starting as the worst case scenario?
Even better anyone who says the Packers don’t do right by their HoF players would have media pointing out Rodgers earning millions.

  70. Is anyone else confused about why the Packers are so adamant about shipping Rodgers out? Last year they had the exact opposite philosophy. I guess that doesn’t really matter at this point, but I’ve seen Jordan Love play and that dude is garbage. You must really hate Aaron Rodgers to be willing to take last place in your division just to get rid of him. Lions, Vikings and Bears are all improving and Packers are only concerned about getting rid of hall of fame quarterback and finding how to make their team the worst.

  71. If the Packers are really playing hardball with the Jets and honestly think their team is better without Rodgers, then what’s the hesitation from the Packers standpoint? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you’ll be moving on from a HOFer for a kid who’s never really played in the league. If the Packers go with Love they’ll more than likely be fighting for the 3rd spot with the Bears. The Vikings seem like the proven commodity from that division along with the Arod led Packers in recent years. The Lions are getting better. The Bears are making moves. I think the Jets are gonna have to pony up if they really think Rodgers will give them a chance. Packers know what Rodgers brings and it’s pretty much playoffs every year. Then again I’m a Fish fan and don’t want to see another HOFer QBing a team in my division. Lol

  72. “Packers need to thank the browns or they would be the laughing stock of the NFL”

Yeah fancy planning ahead regarding the key position in football. What were they thinking. Clown organisation.

  73. The Packers have zero leverage, providing that Rodgers actually does want to play for the Jets. They just have to have the balls to be patient. The one mistake the Jets made was not bringing in Garrapollo in for a meeting or further engaging Carr, even as a transparent smokescreen. There is no way GB wants him on the team this season for the 60m. The mistake GB can make is dragging this out as other teams will be set at QB; this just weakens their position and increases NY’s leverage.

  74. This entire argument is flawed because you assume the Packers need to trade him. What if they’ve decided they won’t accept less than x and until the Jets pony that up it doesn’t happen? What if they are willing to make Rodgers come to training camp? He can’t practice with players who aren’t on his team, and risks fines for not showing up under contract. Maybe after everything Rodgers has done it’s personal and they aren’t willing to give him what he wants easily. Maybe they are willing to force Rodgers to retire or sit on the bench?

Jets are in a box. They have no qb. They let the other free agent qbs sign elsewhere. Let their logical number 2 sign elsewhere, and have a qb who they dont trust. They expected to use their top pick on an online player that they still desperately need, but might need to trade up to get a qb – as one won’t fall to 13. And the fan base will riot if they don’t close this deal.

Yes this is a poker game. But you can’t assume decisions are made on the sole basis of rational thought. As I see it, if the packers are willing to play hardball, they win.

  75. Jets fans are delusional if they think they are getting AR for anything less than a 1+.

They need the trade more than the Packers do. If they don’t get him they are going 6-11 and still have to address the qb position again next year

  76. thebadmanpuntedbaxter says:

So hold firm, Woody. Don’t blink. Bide your time. Show the Packers you’re not desperate. If you wait just long enough, it’s the Packers who may be.

Man, almost as if this article was written by a Viking fan that doesn’t want the packers to have extra draft picks
    **********

Busted! The Jets have much more to lose than the Packers at this point. If this doesn’t happen they will be dealing with “what ifs” for a long, long time. And at this point, Rodgers will play for anyone in order to put the chip on his shoulder that he needs to survive. And if another team gets involved at some point, then the heat on the Jets really gets turned up.

  77. “Tell him he’s not being traded and it’s time to retire. Don’t sign a 60 million dollar deal if you don’t want to go through with it.” — Adorable confusion

  78. It’s quite clear the Packers want a No.1 pick this year or spread the cap hit over 2 years, after 1st June….it’s as simple as that.
The Jets are stupid enough to give them that No. 1 pick…..after all they’re stupid enough to sign Rogers 🤣

  79. I understand this position but respectfully disagree. The Jets don’t have a quarterback and (barring a trade for Lamar) they only have one option. The Packers don’t plan to compete this year and can hold onto AR as long as they want. Some other team will need a QB by Week 1. Jets are going to need to pay up (and the Packers know they will) so they can not be irrelevant for one season.

  80. Jets are setting a new standard on botching the QB position. They will soon begin a new rebuild.

  81. What are you going to do Green Bay with your Aaron Rogers headache? The Jets are the only ones who want to take Rogers off of your hands so that you can start to repair your team from your 60 million dollar screw up. What are you going to do if the Jets walk away because you are all of a sudden getting way too greedy with your zero leverage? What are you going to do if Aaron gets motivated and decides to stay and make your life hell at work all the while getting paid 60 million to do what he does best, be unpleasant and be unlikeable? Aaron is irritating by nature, we all know, you going to send him home and deal with him and the union every day for the next year or more? Are you going to set him on the bench and let Love be looking over his shoulder all season at a once loved QB of 15+ years just sitting there as a friendly reminder of how the team treats it’s players when they have “moved on”? Green Bay should be trying to get Rogers out of their lives ASAP, but let’s drag this nonsense out as long as possible because it will be hilarious to see the end which we all know is coming.

  82. Aaron Rodgers was roundly criticized by many media outlets including this one for not participating in OTA’s last year to familiarize with the new Packer receivers. Doesn’t the same hold true with the Jets and having reps with Garrett Wilson and other receivers not named Lazard?

  83. Jets have leverage? When was the last time the Jets were relevant? Their track record speaks for itself.

  84. Rodgers should just show up for the first day of off-season training in GB and they will trade him for a 3 the next day.

  85. Rodgers has a no-trade clause, so the Packers cannot trade him anywhere after June 1st. Jets have all the marbles, so they can can just wait until Green Bay sees the handwriting on the wall.

  86. That’s a lot of false bravado the enemy of the Jets is time the longer they have to wait the lower the expectations will be for 2023 . I think he’ll play 3 years there at the least 2 years play the waiting game and 2023 will quickly go down the toilet. More then most QB’s Rodgers expects very fast decisions that are on the same page as he is to be made by his wr’s. Play this game and kiss 2023 bye bye.

  87. “So hold firm, Woody. Don’t blink. Bide your time. Show the Packers you’re not desperate. If you wait just long enough, it’s the Packers who may be.” Hey Mike, Woody is the owner with the open checkbook here, however this stare down negotiation is all Joe Douglas. Green Bay and the rest of the NFL is going to find out when it’s all said & done that he is the BEST at making deals. Once the I’s are dotted & the T’s are crossed this will be another highway robbery of a deal that favors the JETS. Look at Jamaal Adams, Sam Darnold, etc.

  88. I completely DISAGREE that the Jets have the leverage. Rodgers has a contract to play for the Packers. The Packers have all the leverage. They know the best quarterback of all time will still be playing for them if the Jets don’t give them what they want.

  89. If Rodgers showed up for traing camp that’d be a first…lol…they could have him sit in a room far away from the practice field the Packers control were he’s located not him . He says do the right thing what a joke he’s messed with the Packers for years with his diva act his nice words didn’t fool me . Make it as hard on him as we can make him wait as long as we can.

  90. chickensalad43 says:

He turns 40 this year, he’s “90%” close to retirement, and he sucked last year. And the Jets are the only team interested in him with that contract. In no universe is he worth a 1st round pick. Green Bay needs to accept that it missed the boat and is selling low
    ———————————
Are people forgetting Zach Wilson, one of the biggest busts in NFL history, is the Jets’ only other option? They can also resign Joe Flacco, a guy who lost a backup position.

The Packers are reloading and Jets are a QB away. Packers have the most leverage.

The Packers have two starting caliber QB’s under contract

    ————-

    Haha…..no….no they don’t

  92. “To ask for a #1 pick in return for the QB who won two of the past three MVPs is a “hijack”? Well, okay. I guess the Packers are just meanies.” Not meanies. Just foolish. Their first mistake was publicly treating this as a “we’re ready to move on” deal instead of “Aaron has done so much for us – we’re willing to let him see what’s out there.” Their second mistake was not agreeing to the framework of a deal before allowing the Jets and Rodgers to talk.” Actually, the FIRST mistake they made was trading up to draft Jordan Love when the team’s needs at WR were glaring. That angered Rodgers, and it would have angered anybody reading this. The Packers made tactical errors at every step of the process.

How about getting the facts straight. He said if he doesnt get to go to the Jets he will retire, he is not returning to the Packers, so they have no leverage. He planned it that way to screw them and he did.

  94. Packers fan since 1961. I can’t wait for His Darkness to exit. Good the Jets got him. To the Jets fans: you will deeply regret this move. As soon as His Darkness doesn’t get his way it will be diva time big time.
Green Bay bent over backwards to please him and he kicked them in the groin. Shouldn’t that tell you all you need to know?
P.S. His play dropped off much this past season. Some of it was the new receivers but he started missing passes that were routine before.

  95. The Jets should contact Ryan and say we want you to sign here, if the deal for Rodgers gets done you’re the backup, if not then you start. Take the ‘you don’t have anyone else’ card away from Green Bay. I’m not a Jets fan but they’ve done a nice job of building a good young team. Don’t give away future picks that can help you in the future for one or two years from a 40 year old guy who had to go into isolation for 4 days to convince himself he should come back and collect 60 mil for playing football. You probably don’t even win the east or get out of the AFC with Rodgers let alone win a Super Bowl. Ryan is a decent veteran bridge to next years draft where you can get your QB of the future. Just run the ball and play good defense, they almost made it work last year with Wilson turning the ball over regularly, Ryan would be an upgrade from that. Conditional ‘24 4th rounder for Rodgers, take it or leave it.

  96. Except the part where Rodgers is gone and the FA QBs are gone and they are starting Wilson with playoffs aspirations lol.

  97. “He already knows the offense, given that his former coordinator in Green Bay will simply dust it off and install it. The challenge isn’t to teach it to Rodgers but to the rest of the team.”

Mike Florio appears to be more like a politician on some issues: talking from both sides of his mouth. He slammed Aaron Rodgers for missing to hookup with drafted receivers this past off season in Green Bay. Are other receivers on the Jets, who haven’t ever played with Aaron, not new to Hackett’s offence?

  98. Aaron Rodgers has single-handedly kept the Packers relevant over the last decade and the fans can’t wait to have the guy run out of town. Be careful what you wish for.

  99. Aside from the created drama,… The Jets and Packers will find some middle ground and complete the deal. I don’t believe the Jets brass wants to feel the heat from the NY media and fans. They can be brutal. The Packers front office will sit back and wait. The media has a love affair with 1265 Lombardi Ave. No heat. Is a 1st round pick in play ? Personally as a Packer fan,.. I think the the team had had better success with 2nd thru 4th round picks than 1st rounders. I’d be happy swapping 1st round spots,.. the Jets 2nd and 3rd round picks this year and next year a 3rd with a performance enhancer to become a 2nd.
Rodgers is gonna play 2 more years. Woody wouldn’t allow the deal if he didn’t.

  100. Its amazing how many people KNOW jordan love is going to suck. I guess they know this from all of their years of scouting for nfl teams. Nobody knows how he is going to turn out. Im guessing most of the people saying that thought the same about rodgers after going 6-10 in his first year as a starter. I believe rodgers still has the talent yet. Yes, he dropped last year and his accuracy was off but i believe that was a combination of circumstances. His problem is that his heart doesnt seem to be in it. He seemed uninterested with it all last year. I thank him for the great run and what he did for the packers and wish him the best with the jets and life after football. Im excited to see what love morphs into. If he sucks, so be it, on to the next. If he turns out to be another 15 year starter, sweet! Time to find out.

  101. So what is so wrong in the Packers asking for the Jets first round pick in this upcoming draft?the Jets know what they have in Rodgers and they must know he is worth a first round pick. just give the Packers that pick and move on,he is worth it.

  102. I have to disagree. The Packers have the leverage. If they continue to get disgusted with the Jets offer all they have to do is tell the Jets the deal is off and hold firm. This either forces Rodgers to retire or play for the Packers next year. Imagine the PR nightmare in New York if the Jets fail to get this done? The Jets GM job is on the line with this as well. He’ll get it done eventually.

  103. I don’t understand the logic of Packers fans thinking GB has so much leverage here. The FO once again managed to offend Rodgers and burn the bridge for him to return when they just couldn’t keep quiet about moving on. Those who think Rodgers would handle his situation like Jimmy G did last year with SF are deluded. I can’t think of a more spiteful person in the league who would enjoy showing up making life hell on everyone who blocked his way out of town when they sent him packing to begin with. All the while making $60 million and wrecking the cap to do so. If I’m the Jets I’m happy to wait and keep all my picks for 2023 and deal conditional picks in 2024 and beyond that would have protections for whether he even plays another year. Meanwhile Love gets to wonder if they’ll pick up his fifth year option in May, try to pivot back to Rodgers, or have the spectacle of him still on the roster airing his grievances on McAfee’s podcast every week. Sure, the Jets backed themselves into a corner, but it’s still no reason to do a bad deal. Teams fail to sign/trade for players all the time when they drop out of the bidding, you just move on to the next option. Biggest threat to the Jets is their owner gets impatient and gets in the way of their GM making a sound decision.

  104. “Its amazing how many people KNOW jordan love is going to suck. I guess they know this from all of their years of scouting for nfl teams.” they just hope he is a failure because they either hate the Packers or are in love with Rodgers.their one fear is that Love will become another all pro and MVP for the next twenty years in GB.

  105. Packers should move Rodgers sooner than later. If the Jets watch his game film from last season, they will back out. 😂

  106. Packers are no fools. That $60mil was planned for and budgeted when the contract with Aaron was signed last year. They will eat it if they have to. Ever since the arrival of Ron Wolf all those years ago, Green Bay has never let short term considerations get in the way of long term focus. Jordan Love gets the starting job under center, whether or not Aaron is on the roster. The Jets need to understand that. In this case, not having a greedy egotistic owner who does not want to eat Aaron’s contract works to Green Bay’s favor.

  107. GB waited a year too long to make this deal. They had Denver with Hackett willing to give a huge draft haul and Rodgers coming off a second MVP, but also a second straight disappointing playoff exit, this time with him staring down Adams and throwing into triple coverage ignoring open options elsewhere. Now he’s coming off a down year, showing signs of decline and disinterest and can’t extend plays anymore with his legs. He didn’t even crack 300 yards in a game last year and couldn’t even make the playoffs, failing to beat the Lions at home in January. He’s said he was thinking he was 90% retiring before his darkness retreat. Most media and fans talk about needing a true franchise quarterback to elevate the rest of the roster, overcome a bad offensive line, mediocre defense to have a chance to win championships, but GB fans also require an elite defense for success as an all-time great QB isn’t enough so the excuses are built-in every year when they fail to live up to their regular season record. I just don’t see Rodgers elevating the team like Mahomes or Allen for quite a few years now.

  108. Not sure how the negotiations are going, no one knows, except the Jets and Packers. Here’s a theory how about the Packers get a number 1 plus, how about flopping the Packers number 1 (15) with the Jets (13) then a 2nd then an incentive based 3, that could become a 2, or 1 in 2024.

I kept saying the jets have upper hand. They want Rodgers but dont need Rodgers. couls find a wb innthe draft snd say screw it packers he is all yours.

    —————————-

Like who? Mark Sanchez? Sam Darnold? Zach Wilson?
    ——————————
Well, if the Packers won’t budge on a 1st plus, how far of a reach is giving 2 1st round picks for Jackson? He won’t be any more expensive than Rodgers and he will probably still be in the league in a couple of years….

  110. The Jets have all the leverage cause Gutey re-worked Rodgers contract last year to create this mess. Its hard to claim Packer leverage when doing nothing will result in at minimum a 2023 cap hit north of $60M. Yet once again, no one trashes Packer management except fans of other teams, and when we do, we’re shouted down by Spielman comparisons. The difference being one is still a GM and the other isn’t.

Jets could use their own 1st rounders to trade up from #13 and get one of the promising young QBs in this draft. Better plan than giving the picks away for an old guy or a difficult guy. That’s what smart ownership like GB or BAL is trying to do – jettison their problem QBs and find young potential.

  112. Taking the Jet’s second round pick this year plus Elijah Moore sounds about right

  113. If you are the Packers, you know this season is transitional. No matter what happens, they are going to start Love and see what they have before they give him the 5th year option. Obviously they would prefer Rodgers and his cash to be gone, but if the Jets want to go another route, Rodgers can ride the pine or retire. They aren’t going to win the superbowl clearly, so Rodgers being on the team kinda doesn’t matter. All that matters is Love getting his chance.

  114. Matt Ryan is still out there. Or you might be able to swing a deal for Andy Dalton.

Maybe you should just pay up and be done with it.

  115. Both teams recently drafted QB’s in the first round. Why would they have any interest in Aaron Rodgers?

  116. Jets have very little leverage if they fail to bring him in because they played games and were cheap in the compensation the Jet fans will riot. We’ll just sit back and wait let’s chat again say in mid to late June.

  117. Packers need to call the 49’ers and see if the are still high on drugs ? they are set to win now all they need is a QB and all they have is garage so you say they wanna waste another year ? I’d be mad as hell If my team did that.

GB waited a year too long to make this deal.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^

That’s short-term thinking. It is not “a year too long” if Jordan Love was not ready to take over the job under center last season. He got one more year to learn the job. If the Packers can make the transition from their second HOF QB to number three in a row, that year they bought with Aaron will seem cheap.

  120. Woody Johnson, who was the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2021, was born with a platinum spoon in his mouth. He is a great-grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I, and a heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune. He wants a SB champion. And he knows his best chance is with Aaron Rodgers. GB needs to play hardball with Woody, even to the extent of making AR sit on the bench this year. What’s more, AR’s ego would NOT allow him to carry a clipboard and he will demand that Woody up the ante. GB has ALL the leverage.

    Screw the Gang Green.

  121. Does anyone that’s been around Rodgers think he would actually get together with teammates on his own accord? What happens with his contract if a non contact injury happens to him? Packers don’t have to pay his $58 million dollar bonus until Regular season game 1. It actually helps the packers cap by waiting until after June 1 and if you are waiting until then to trade him, what’s the hurry after that to trade him before game 1? Let him retire or come back in if the packers don’t get the desired draft capital. What are the jets comparable options to Rodgers? Give Lamar $250 million guaranteed? I don’t think so. It would be back to fighting to get over .500 for them again.

  122. The Jets really don’t have the leverage this article lays out, because ultimately it’s not at all about when Rodgers becomes a Jet.
The only thing that matters is becoming a Jet, since they want it to happen and he wants that to happen too.

The Packers stand in the way of that today, tomorrow, before the draft, after the draft, etc.

  123. “Packers hold the cards. They can send him to any team after June first. Or he can retire“
    —————————-
Riiiight. Please list all the teams that are sitting around with $60 million in cap space and will sit on all of it until June on the off chance that the Packers will give them Rogers for nothing just to spite the Jets. We’ll wait.

  124. Loves career consists of 600 yards passing with 3 TDS and 3 interceptions. He may be starting caliber QB on my nephews pop warner team.
So you would rather Zach than Love? he’s that bad? Jet fans ….. y’all make dumb and dumber sound like Shakespeare

    —————

Love played very well last season in his lone opportunity, similar to how Rodgers played very well against Dallas when Favre went down the year preceding his first year as a starter. Love will be a top 15 QB THIS year, and Packers will compete for a division title immediately. First-round draft pick learning behind the most talented quarterback of all-time for two years, great running game, and a young improving defense who held three of the top 11 offenses in the final quarter of last season to below their average PPG.

  125. Have you people who are commenting on this article watch Rogers play last year. Maybe you would have a different view if you had.
