Mike Gesicki agrees to deal with Patriots

The Patriots are plucking a tight end away from one of their divisional rivals.

According to multiple reports, Mike Gesicki has agreed to sign with New England. Gesicki, who was No. 46 on PFT’s list of the top free agents, has agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million.

It’s the second straight one-year pact for Gesicki as he played out his final season with the Dolphins while on the franchise tag. He appeared in every game for Miami, but saw his role change in Mike McDaniel’s offense and he dropped from 73 catches for 780 yards to 32 catches for 362 yards last season.

He did catch five touchdowns in the regular season and one more in the playoffs, so he could be put to use as a red zone target by the Patriots. The Patriots traded Jonnu Smith to the Falcons, so Gesicki and Hunter Henry are set to be the top tight ends in New England this year.

  1. Let’s see how the Boston sports radio honks react to this. The afternoon drive time hosts booed their resective wives while they were giving birth to their kids.

  2. Interesting signing. I’m surprised anybody wants to play for the Pats these days.

  3. 1 year deal…. Looks like the Patriots learned their lesson with Junno….I hope BoB brings out the best in him & teamed up with HH they could form one heck of a mismatch together…. He’s not known for his blocking so this is obviously a MOVE TE position for the Pats which should help Mac out immensely!!!!

  4. Gesicki is solid and has a lot of football left in him. There’s only one ball on the field. When you have as many weapons as Miami has, someone will get lost in the shuffle. It was Gesicki.

  5. What a freaking idiot! Good riddance I guess to one of the best to a cellar team.

  6. And Mac Jones will still suck n struggle next year because he’s not a top 15 caliber QB1 in the NFL.

  7. First off he’s not a TE, he’s a WR.

Wish him the best but man was it tough watching him try to get open.

  8. Hope he doesn’t mind playing with a bust at QB…or should I say another BB draft bust.LOL

  9. The knock on Mike Gesicki is he’s a terrible below average blocker. Modern TEs have to be able to in-line block.

  10. I guess to one of the best to a cellar team.

Maybe the new genius coach in Miami wasn’t using him correctly last season.

  11. BB tinkering around the margins. If NYJ lands Rodgers Pats are in trouble in AFCE. Hope he’s got an ace up his sleeve come draft day because I’m sorry but Mac Jones is not the guy to help you compete w Mahomes/Allen/Burrow and now Rodgers in the AFC.

  12. So it must not have Bill O’Brien that helped form the two headed monster of Gronk and Hernandez and knows how to get TEs open. *waits for slaty porpoise fans to bring up how god Tua is*

  13. I am surprised Gesicki didn’t have bigger interest from teams. Miami never used him like they ahould’ve. Gesicki should be the modern day Jimmy Graham, due to the mismatch he creates for defenses. Miami head coach McDaniel, for some reason tried to make him like George Kittle instead of a glorified WR, which is what Gesicki is. I really thought Gesicki would get a big payday with a multi-year contract. Gesicki is Darren Waller without the injury problem.

  14. In all honesty he’s a great dude, great teammate, great leader.

His only problems are talent deficiencies.

Miami’s been looking for a TE the last 5 years, even with Big Mike on the roster.

This is a disaster situation for New England.

Ironically Jonnu Smith is a TE I actually liked.

  15. I thought this was supposed to be a deep TE draft class this year, or have I misread that?

I like Gesicki, but I’d have thought that after the Jonnu Smith adventure they’d be wary of FA TE’s and just go for one in the draft of the depth was there.

  16. A decoy to free up Hunter Henry in the RedZone as well as an occasional couple of clutch catches sounds good to me. Pats still need a burner for receiver though so far all route runners.

  17. Sounds like some Dolphins fans are butt hurt that not everyone wants to ride the Tua Train.

Bill is responding to weaknesses in the offense, bringing in a veteran OL leader, a hard running back who catch the football, a multi purpose slot/wideout and now a move the sticks red zone tight end. Bill builds teams, he doesn’t collect and pay stars.

Completely different situation. Jonnu Smith is not a pass catcher & was way overpaid. Gesicki is a pass catching TE that is a weak blocker. Gesicki is way more dangerous in today’s NFL than Jonnu ever was. Gesicki is the kind of player that should be signed to multi-year contract. If the Pats use him right, they will have their version of Darren Waller. If the Patriots use Gesicki correctly, he will be by far the best free agent they sign in free agency.

    Huge upgrade to Jonnu Smith

    —————————————-

LOL, you mean literally right, like his height?

The Dolphins (and Titans) wished they had Jonnu Smith the last couple years.

LMAO why are you comparing a TE with a WR?

The Dolphins didn’t even return his phone calls while looking everywhere for new TEs.

Enjoy watching him pump those elbows and run in place.

Heck no. Gesicki needed to go. He has no place in modern NFL offenses.

The Dolphins front office along with intelligent Dolphins fans didn’t want him back…..under ANY circumstances.

He’s an excellent leader and teammate for sure.

He’s zero concern for our defense.

I think we can safely say Jones play last was based on the terrible coaches and schemes he had last year. Patricia & Judge were brutal and predictable. Let’s see how he does under a real offensive coordinator.

Congrats on beating the Dolphins (who were starting their backup QB) by 2 points. How’d the Pats do when the Dolphins had Tua start? Oh, 20-7. Goes the genius BB doing 3 years post Brady? What? He didn’t even make the playoffs. Say it isn’t so!

  25. Great team player and attitude. Skills are exceptional when it comes to catching the ball. Mike’s issue is not only that he can’t block is that the defense knows this causing the offense’s list of plays they can call limited. There is no way of getting around that.

  26. Dolphin fans never cease to be a source of amusement. The team hasn’t won anything in many many decades but they throw comments out there like they are perennial World Champions.

Gesicki will hopefully be a good addition to the Pats offense. He doesn’t have to be “the man.”

The guy was the second leading receiver for the phish 2019-2021 and was one of their TD targets for the same period. For a guy that “can’t get open” and “lacks skills” that says a lot about the phish team. The guy was so bad he played under the franchise tag in 2022.

Keep up the comedy routine Fin fans! You will likely celebrate the 100th anniversary of your SB win before you win another one!

  27. Gesicki is a quality guy. Won’t create issues in the locker room and I wish him well. But he’s a streaky receiver who cannot break tackles and a terrible blocker. Can make great catches, though. But I’m glad Miami moved on from him. Just an awful fit in their system.

You could honestly say this about every fan in the AFCE.

They’re all football specialists and have great knowledge of the sport, mock the Patriots 2 dynasties and how to build teams, yet can’t build playoff teams from year to year. None of it makes sense.

They just follow the media’s lead trying to bash NE due to jealousy. Misery loves company.

Miami hasn’t even sniffed a SB in 35 years. It’s just the strangest thing. They love cap hell, they love overpaying at CB and WR, to make it all flashy for their gullible and awful sports fans in an awful sports town.

Even back when Marino was playing games were blacked out on tv due to lack of sell out games. True story.

Horrible franchise and fanbase. Not quite the Jets, but not far off.

6’6″ and 250lbs. is not a WR, he’s a TE that plays like a WR. Great in the slot. I hope this isn’t another Wes Welker deal, that worked out way better for the Pats than it did for the Dolphins.

The Mac Jones led Patriots got their first win against Miami last year against a 7th round QB and a undrafted rookie CB, by 2.

McDaniels wasn’t the guy throwing the ball. But he did take him off the field, alot. In order for Miami to run their zone stretch plays, they would go with the better blocker…..why? Because Miami was fielding 2nd and 3rd string RT play all season.

I like Gesiki, but it was circumstance that played into his rather bad season.

    ——————–

Jonnu stinks. So no, not true. He can’t run a route to save his life. Throwing him the ball if he isn’t 10 yards open on every side is a liability. Pick 6 waiting to happen.

  34. Jonnu Smith did nothing in NE. Basically anyone with a pulse is an upgrade over Smith.

  35. Contract UP TO 9 mil for 1 year—– most likely incentives included which would end up being a good deal for the Pats. The Pats are building a diverse offense.

  36. Good receiver, can’t block to save his life though, which is why he wasn’t a fit in Miami or on a lot of other teams.

  37. Problem is the Pats offense has always required their TEs to be willing blockers. Gesicki doesn’t fit that. Great red zone target and safety valve but the Pats are one of the few teams that still runs to set up the pass. Curious he didn’t go somewhere that likes to air it out.

  38. Gesicki is not a bad signing. Good tight end, but doesn’t block. Not sure how that is going to fly in a Pats offense. Big year for Jones though. I do think he has talent, but this year is make or break and he knows it. Pat’s have been relatively quiet in FA as far as SPLASh signings. Then again, they’ve never been all that flashy. And, when they were two years ago, it didn’t fair up to well.

Lots of low level, under the radar type signings, which is typical of a BB type team. If these signings pan out and Jones can get his act together, then they can compete in the AFC… I know all of you want to put Buffalo and Miami at the top of the list, and the Jet’s if they get AR, but you still have to ask yourself.. WHAT HAVE ANY OF THEM WON???? OH YEAH, NOTHING……

    Yeah….like:

    Mike Vrabel
    Rodney Harrison
    Corey Dillon
    Lagarrette Blount
    Wes Welker
    Randy Moss
    Antwain Smirh
    Rob Ninkovich
    Mathew Judon
    Stephon Gilmore

    Need I go on?

  40. I am not sure why the Pats fans think the Fins fans are negative about this. He is a fan favorite and great talent. It is a great signing. The issue is he CAN’T BLOCK. So, when ever he is in it tips the defense. I once read an article that stated that the Dolphins ran the ball only 8% of the time when he was in! Seriously, I am no expert on reading offenses, but tells you something. However, he also caught more balls than any TE out of the Slot including Kelce. Belichick will know what to do with him. I and most Fins fans wish him only the best… even if it is with a rival team.

  41. No more excuses for Mac Jones. He needs to show improvement or BB will walk.

comments on a Pats related thread. The paranoia and jealousy still is there.

Not a Miami fan but Tua looked a lot more dynamic than Jones.
Jones may not look terrible but he’s still a limited QB in a conference loaded with great QBs. That’s very interesting for a franchise that has been dependent upon great (goat) QB play for 20 years.

  46. but you still have to ask yourself.. WHAT HAVE ANY OF THEM WON???? OH YEAH, NOTHING……

    ++++++++++++++++++++

Such comments show how Pats fans are out of the reality how people out of Boston see : what have Pats won without Brady?

  47. A wise poster said on March 15th after the Smith-Shuster signing……

” And they need Tight Ends. They only have Hunter Henry on the roster, and his contract is up after 2023 (he’s just 28). Is Dalton Shultz and/or Gesicki coming?”

“So let it be written, so let it be done”

    Bill Belichick

  48. Nobody, but NOBODY is jealous of a below .500 team. Keep telling yourself that, kid. I hear thunderous laughter.

Yet you keep showing up every day. I hear thunderous laughter too.

  49. Great slot WR… not a good TE sadly. If he could block he would be getting a massive contract today

  50. Pretty funny reading through some of these comments. He was considered a nobody for the Fins last year by the Pats fans, now he’s Darren Waller. Lol. Next he’ll be Gronk. Just like Stidham. He was the second coming of Brady until Mac came along. Now Mac is considerably better than both according to the fans. I can see why people don’t like NE fans and it’s not because of winning. It’s the lack of knowledge.

  51. The emphasis appears to be on red zone help for Mac Jones. That was JSS’s advantage over Meyers, theoretically, and that’s Gesicki’s advantage over Jonnu Smith. James Robinson also gives Mac a pass catching RB other than Rhamondre Stevenson, which will also help. Once they add some lineman and maybe a #1 WR, Mac will be set up nicely with his new OC.

  52. He’s a good addition. He was second on the team in targets, receptions, and receiving yards for three years in a row. Then Tyreek Hill showed up, and he dropped to #3.

He makes the Pats better right away, and still probably has two good years left in him while they try to find the right answer at QB.

  53. These guys are all buddies, making millions of dollars, having a good time while clueless fans take this stuff so seriously!

  54. Just the typical yearly move by BB to extract all the info on the AFC opponents plays by signing a guy from the team. Seems like he tries to do this every year with the Bills and Dolphins players. He isn’t called a mad genius for nothing.

  55. One year rental, they call him Gesucky but he is still an upgrade over that bum jonnu in the receiving dept anyway they both can’t block.

  56. Just the typical yearly move by BB to extract all the info on the AFC opponents plays by signing a guy from the team. Seems like he tries to do this every year with the Bills and Dolphins players. He isn’t called a mad genius for nothing.

Are you sure it was Belichick not BOB?

Of course, we all know that it will be on BOB if not work out.

    ******^^^^^
Most teams and fan bases don’t game plan or get worked up over a player that is not part of their opponent’s game plan.

The Pats picked up Gesicki to be a piece of the offense and as an upgrade to Jonnu Smith. No Patriots fan thinks he is going to be the next Gronk but a lot of lowly Phins fans think he can’t even play the game despite being the team’s #2 option for a few years. For a guy that supposedly doesn’t deserve to be on the field it’s kind of funny he played under the franchise tag last year. I guess the Dolphins management can’t judge talent.

  60. I don’t care if Pats got Justin Jefferson, and Jerry Rice & Gronk in their primes, they still have a lousy QB. Still looking up at the Bills, and probably the Jets.
