Bengals OL coach Frank Pollack: I wasn’t expecting to add a player like Orlando Brown

Bengals offensive line coach Frank Pollack was shocked when he found out his team was signing left tackle Orlando Brown.

“It really kind of came out of nowhere,” Pollack said, via the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I was not expecting us to be in position to do anything for someone of his caliber. It just kind of came on our radar, with me anyway, the day that we got that deal done. It was exciting. They said, ‘Hey, take a look at this guy, he might be in play.’ I’m like ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. Really? Wow!” So, it was surprising. It was fantastic. It was an exciting day for the Bengals.”

The arrival of Brown has resulted in the incumbent left tackle, Jonah Williams, asking for a trade. Pollack says he’d love to have both Brown and Williams in the Bengals’ offensive line room in 2023.

“I’ve reached out to Jonah,” Pollack said. “I don’t want to really spend a lot of time talking about that. I’d love to coach Jonah. I’ve loved coaching him. There’s an old saying that this is a great game and a crazy business. I hope we get to coach him. He’s a good football player. He’s got a bright future. Hopefully it’s still here with the Bengals in 2023.”

Whether Williams has a future in Cincinnati remains to be seen, but what’s clear is that the Bengals are all-in on Brown as their left tackle protecting Joe Burrow‘s blind side.

  1. Given Browns cost vs quality, was this really a good signing?
    Bengals are going all in.
    We’ll see how it goes.

  2. Chiefs fans are just the worst. They whine all the time when they lose and now this sour grape BS with losing Brown. LOL

  3. The Chiefs ‘let him walk’ after offering him 6yr/$139 million contract and Brown stupidly rejecting it last year.
But sure they did this on purpose, because signing a lesser graded RT from the Jaguars to more money and years than the Bengals did for Brown is just evidence of their genius…

  4. I think this is the beginning of the end for Brown. He is a very good player, but he is npt built like an elite lineman. I see weight gain and a precipitous drop off in his play.

  5. Chiefs fans know the only shot they have to beat the Bengals is if they can pressure Burrow. In Burrow’s 3 wins over the Chiefs, he was kept mostly clean and picked them apart. In this year’s AFC Championship game the Bengals didn’t protect him well resulting in 5 sacks and other pressures. So Chiefs fans are gonna act like signing Brown is a bad move, when in reality it’s a move that very possibly matters big time come late January.

  6. When healthy Jonah is solid but lacks length/size for the LT position which Brown has for the NFL. There is a reason why Jonah didn’t go higher in the draft he is better suited for RT or G. It will be good for free agency next year if Jonah can show he has versatility otherwise I wouldn’t take less than a 2nd round pick for him.

  7. Jonah spent the last 3 years perfecting his skills at LT and suddenly gets thrown to the curb. Time to go to a team where he’s wanted.

  8. Chiefs endeavored to keep Brown, but it didn’t work out for very obvious reasons. Brown is around the 10th-12th best tackle in the league. Brown thinks he’s in the top 3 and should have a contract that reflect that. The Chiefs’ brain trust didn’t agree. They didn’t assemble a Super Bowl team by over-paying players (and neither did New England over the last two decades). They did just fine after Tyreek left and they’ll be just fine now.

  9. I’m a Chiefs fan. We offered Brown to much money last year and he refused it. I spent most of the season bitching about him being beat by several pass rushers, although he did tighten his game up during the back half of the season. Once the season was over Veach realized Brown wasn’t worth 20+ million a year and didn’t want to insult the kid by offering him less. We let him test the market and he got paid less. He will be good for the Bengals but he is not a great LT. The kid we signed is better than Brown and thats why we paid accordingly.

  10. Can’t fault Cinci for taking advantage of a guy who thought he could play hardball and got dropped like a sack of potatoes. He got 40% less, clearly playing for the money. Hopefully for cinci he doesn’t quit. He’s not a top 10 LT and is horrible at run blocking. If Burrow can avoid Browns constant issue of letting guys through, like Mahomes did, he’ll be okay. But he allowed like 45 pressures, Mahomes agility masked his pass blocking issues.

  11. Orlando Brown is an ok left tackle, but a top right tackle. Two of the most well managed teams have let him walk. So, you’re definitely not getting Orlando Pace, but any help on the offensive line is good help. Brown will help.

  12. I would hope that the OL coach’s candid excitement about getting Orlando Brown would help Jonah Williams get his mind right (no pun intended). He should stay in Cincinnati – Go RT1, Roll Tide, Go Bengals!!!

  13. Both the Chiefs and Bengals seem to think they’ve made the right moves to improve their o-lines. I like the banter between fans, but the reality is both sides won.

  14. “Jonah spent the last 3 years perfecting his skills at LT and suddenly gets thrown to the curb. Time to go to a team where he’s wanted.”
He tied for leading the league in sacks allowed last year with 12. Will there be a rush of teams wanting to get their quarterback decapitated?

  15. Brown was insulted when the Chiefs didn’t offer him the same or better deal than last year. So he walked. He’s a good LT but playing with Mahomes made him look way way better statistically than he really is. It’s a good deal for the Bengals for the money, but the Chiefs were tired of his attitude.

So you are saying that this latest version of the Ravens is well managed. Hmm, ok I guess.

  17. Hey Chiefs fans- if he sucks so bad, why has he made four straight pro bowls? Peter King thinks he’s pretty good, that it was a great signing, and he knows more than you haters.

  18. It’s funny how people on here are acting like they over paid so much for a guy who isn’t elite and Chief fans acting like they didn’t even want him. He is a 26 year old 4 time Pro Bowl tackle and they made him the 18th highest paid tackle. He is no Trent Williams but they didn’t pay him like Williams either. He’s replacing a guy that lead the league in sacks allowed so it is a good signing at a good price. He’s a top 18 tackle
