Jets’ Allen Lazard calls Nathaniel Hackett “The best teacher I’ve ever had in my life”

Nathaniel Hackett was fired just 15 games into his head coaching career last season, at the end of a disastrous year in Denver. But some of the players who know Hackett best rave about him.

Hackett is now offensive coordinator of the Jets, and his past experience as offensive coordinator of the Packers is helping the Jets attract offensive talent. Aaron Rodgers said this week that Hackett is one of the reasons he wants to play for the Jets, and new Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard raved about Hackett in his introductory press conference in New York.

Lazard played in Hackett’s offense for three years in Green Bay, and Lazard said he has never had a coach at any level of football, or a teacher at any school he’s ever attended, who has taught him more than Hackett has.

“The best teacher I’ve ever had in my life,” Lazard said of Hackett.

Lazard actually had his most productive season last year, after Hackett had left Green Bay for Denver, but it’s clear that Lazard thinks Hackett set him up for success. And that he thinks he’s going to have a big year in Hackett’s offense in 2023.

  1. Keep talking Lazard. Make this deal finally happen. Put pressure on the Jets (your team) to stop sitting on their hands and please, finally, take Rodgers. It will look pretty dumb if they don’t at this point. Why do you need all those draft picks if this is the year you’re going to win a SuperBowl with Rodgers anyway?

By the way Jets fans, he was sometime called Alien Lizard. I don’t know if that nickname will stick in New York.

  2. I’m grinding my teeth while watching this Packer franchise slowy disintegrate. Can this front office really be as bad as I’m inclined to think they are?? Hope not. Still – just purchased my first Jets tee shirt from their pro shop.

  3. I’m sure that clock management was not one of those lessons taught by Hackett.

  4. Way to suck up for playing time. Coach hugs and juice boxes got rolled by his team in Denver and looked like an idiot.

  5. And maybe Hackett is an outstanding OC. He’s clearly not geared for ‘the big chair’, but if he excells at coordinating/coaching, then more power to him. Maybe he can salvage Zach Wilson in the process.

Surprised it took 15 games when this site was calling for his head after week 3. I know y’all were pissed Denver hired him, but that was some of the most unfair treatment of a HC I’ve ever seen.

  7. He got 44 million dollars from it and never even topped 1000 total yards in those 3 seasons combined

  8. Teacher of what? Like the article stated Lazard’s best year was when Hackett left. Lazard’s best statistical year is only 60 receptions for 788 yards and 6 TDs. And that is playing with a HOF QB. Not sure why the Jets wanted to sign this guy. They already have at least 2 WRs, Wilson and Moore, who are better than him and maybe Davis as well.

  9. While coaching on the sidelines in Denver Nathaniel Hackett always had that same look on his face that said “Did I close the garage door at the house before leaving for work this morning?”

  10. Jets way over paid for a run of the mill 2nd WR to appease there new Diva QB it’s our turn to laugh
at all the disgusting games he will be playing on his new team. Great advice for the Jets don’t waste anymore of your money on any of his other washup friends .

  11. Guy makes a simple harmless statement and everyone goes crazy with attacks and conspiracies – welcome to the zany world we live in.

  12. Some coaches weren’t meant to be head coaches. But shine as coordinators. That’s Hackett.

  13. I really like Allen as a person and am very happy that he is in the right place at the right time to get that kind of money. . He is positive, funny, and isn’t afraid to block and do it well.A great teammate and locker room guy.
He had every opportunity to prove he is a true #1 or #2 and any honest assessment is that he’s simply not that. He doesn’t have speed. He falls after long ball catches instead of striding into the end zone.
He is a good #3 and serviceable #2, but he was outplayed by two rookies this last year that proved to be superior athletes and receivers by the end of their first season.
He does know the offense if and when Rodgers arrives and will be able to help teach it. He will run the right routes.
I get it fir Hackett and Rodgers. It’s just not a huge loss for the Packers and a reach for the Jets to pay that for an average player that is an excellent person. If they don’t get Rodgers, it’s a definite overpay situation, but another example on how the WR market continues to rise to $10-$13M per year for ho hum guys.

  14. Can’t believe they gave him $22 million guaranteed he’s a #3 WR. I don’t think Hackett is a bad coach because of Denver experience, Belichick was fired by Cleveland and people wouldn’t say he’s a bad coach. Gotta have players to win and Denver doesn’t have enough of them.

The Packers will be lucky to win 4 games with Jordan Love at QB

  16. Was so impressed with him at his press conference. Thoughtful, intelligent and seems serious as a heart attack about winning. Glad he’s a Jet. Loved the idea that he wanted to get out of the Midwest.

  17. Wilson will be benched by Payton before Halloween. Stidham will lead the Broncos to the playoffs. Hackett was the scapegoat.

  18. Entire state of Colorado is laughing at Lazard. Hackett’s scheme is so predicate, pass outside and Rodgers throw deep. Defenders will dare Rodgers across the middle and if he takes the bait they will pick him off in the second half.

  19. Denver thought Hackett was great as well he was so great he lasted for almost a season.

    _____________

Please explain the basis for your assessment of Jordan’s ability. He has started only one game and that was in a very loud road environment that he only had half a week of preparation. You must be privy to information the rest of us do not have.

  21. Ouch, article hit a nerve in Wisconsin as well as Colorado. Imagine Lazards best year was last year with out Hackett and ALSO with Devonte Adams across from him. Hackett was soo bad and predictable in Denver yet his QB the two seasons before became the NFL MVP, but it was all Hackett, riiight.
The Jets aren’t paying Lazard #1 WRer money, he’ll be a 2 or 3, Jets have OROTY G. Wilson as a 1. E. Moore as a 2 or 3 with Lazard. In other words, he’s bigger, younger, healthier than Corey Davis, for less money.
    Stay classy Denver and GB.

  22. It’s funny the kind of stuff guys will say for $11 million a year. Weird how that works.

  23. This owner probably would have fired Bill Walsh after going 8-24 his first two seasons in San Francisco.

  24. I know y’all were pissed Denver hired him, but that was some of the most unfair treatment of a HC I’ve ever seen

Anyone who watched a single Broncos game last year will tell you how ridiculous this sounds…if they can stop laughing long enough to do so…he was that bad…like horrible…can almost say worse than McDaniels

  25. Love could be the fourth seventeen-year HOF quarterback for the Packers. I can’t say he will and nobody can say he won’t. You can wish, hope, and pray he won’t but nobody knows he won’t.

  26. I’m grinding my teeth while watching this Packer franchise slowy disintegrate.
    ==========

Gotta break some eggs to make an omelet.

They had a couple really good shots at it in 2020 and 2021.

If they can’t get out from under Rodgers contract with a trade, yes, this will be ugly. I don’t think this is 2005 where they have to overhaul the bulk of the roster. But it is scary going forward without knowing what we have at QB. That has been the constant for the last 30 years.

  27. While coaching on the sidelines in Denver Nathaniel Hackett always had that same look on his face that said “Did I close the garage door at the house before leaving for work this morning?”
    ==========

    We know that look.

    McCarthy always looked constipated.

  28. Did Hackett teach him to drop balls while wide open in crucial situations? I’ll give him his due for excellent blocking and incredible catching of contested balls.
