Jimmy Garoppolo: I don’t want to be given anything, I want to earn it

Jimmy Garoppolo‘s official introduction as a new member of the Raiders was delayed a little bit, but it finally happened on Friday.

The expectation is that Garoppolo will take over the offense in Las Vegas in a reunion with Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels. McDaniels was the offensive coordinator for the Patriots when Garoppolo entered the NFL and the hope is that he’ll pick the offense up quickly so that the team can have more success than they experienced with Derek Carr last season.

While that’s the expectation, Garoppolo stressed at a press conference that he is not coming to the team with a feeling of entitlement about his role in the offense or his role as a leader.

“I’m coming with the mindset that I need to earn everything — I don’t want to be given any ‘You’re the franchise guy,’ or whatever,” Garoppolo said, via Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com. “I want to come in and earn it. I think it will come through hard work, working with the teammates, being in the facility. All those little things will play a role. But yeah, I don’t want to be given anything; I want to earn it. Just because I’m the quarterback, I’m not the leader because of that. I want to be the leader because guys respect me and believe in me. . . . I think it will happen naturally. I don’t want to force anything, be inauthentic. I just want to be myself and it’s done me well in the past.”

Garoppolo went to a Super Bowl and a conference title game as a starter for the 49ers, but was seen as being along for the ride on those postseason runs. Authoring another one with the Raiders would likely create a different narrative about Garoppolo’s role in his team’s success.

  1. Based on who you choose to copulate with I fail to understand this front that you have football on your mind.

  2. If I had already earned over 100 million dollars for never once being the best player on the field I would say the same.

  3. I’m rooting for Jimmy G who despite doing nothing but win has always been seen as a game mgr etc. Even tho I root for a divsion rival I hope he gets his due. It’s not his fault he get’s injured.

  4. I’m not a big fan of Jimmy G, but I have more faith in him than I have in this coaching staff. I hope this works out for the Raiders.

  5. When his noodle arm gives out on passes over 40 yards, he can expect McDaniels to throw him under the bus and buy more time in Raiderland.

  6. Jimmy G is a good QB. People who refer to him as a game manager need to study up on what the term means. Jeff Hostetler and Trent Dilfer come to mind. Jimmy’s problem is that he doesn’t stay healthy.

  7. Sorry Jimmy the world has changed. We want it all and we dont want to earn it or work for it we want it handed to us. Its just easier that way. LOL The only ones who truely want to toil for it are those crossing our borders as we speak. they cant wait to get to work.

  8. This is probably the most hilarious exchange of QB personnel in the history of the league.

Replacing Carr with Garoppolo is clearly a downgrade.

  9. Seems like a lot of people her are jealous of Jimmy G. He has probably won a lot more games than whatever QB you have on your teams right now.

  10. If the quality of your competition is that low, “earning it” doesn’t really doesn’t do anything to improve the team.

  11. Some not-so-subtle shots at Carr. How he doesn’t want to be inauthentic and give cliche answers to questions. I love it.

  12. Anyone who know anything about football knows Carr has a way better arm then Jimmy plus Carr only missed two games in 9 years ( broken leg and tweaked back ) Jimmy CANT stay in the field 5 games in a row but he can run for a first down. Lol

  13. Jimmy has been given the job as backup/mentor for the QB they’re going to draft. It’s harder to fire a coach when you have a rookie QB, so McDaniels is following the strategy to fool Mark Davis for as long as possible. Jimmy is part of the plan.

I hope greedy Lamar is taking notes on this.

Is this the same Jimmy Garropollo who was once the Highest paid player in NFL history after 8 starts? Real easy for him to say.

    Chiefs 12-5
    Chargers 10-7
    Broncos 9-8
    Raiders 3-14

The Raiders were suppose to be the worst team in the division last season. Even blowing multiple big leads in games they were still better than the Broncos. They beat the Chargers in one of their two games last season and nearly beat the Chiefs in a game. Yeah, three wins. Carr didn’t put the Raiders in his shoulders and carry them in any of those games either.

  16. All Garoppolo does is win. People love to call him Jimmy Glass, but the fact is that every QB that playes for the Niners ends up injured. I think the problem is with the Niners, no Garoppolo.

It’s a shame that Josh McDaniels got angry at Waller for not inviting him to his wedding…..and traded him. He was arguably the best TE/WR on the team.

  17. I am definitely over that kind of attitude. I want to just be given stuff now. Takes too long to earn it.

  18. Jimmy G is one of the backbones this spineless team needs. The kid works hard and gets positive results. Anyone calling him a game manager, I think Joe Montana and a few others in the past have been good game managers also !!

  19. Works hard, recovers from injury and plays well, has a winning playoff record and has been to the Super Bowl, negotiates reasonable contracts and accepts them, and has made a lot of money by playing the long game.

Contracts are easy when you hold up your end, have playoff success, and accept reasonable offers.

The total amount of guaranteed money Garoppolo has received over his 9 years in the league, across 5 contracts, is more than $40 million less than the Ravens have offered Jackson in guaranteed money for a single contract.

  21. Garoppolo for Carr is a confusing swap but in some ways it’s an upgrade. He may not have the arm that Carr has, but he does win. I just want raider week to mean something again.

  22. I don’t want nobody to give me nothing. Open up the door and I’ll get it myself.

  23. When Jimmy is out for the season in Week 9, the Raiders are going to be wondering what happened?

  24. I’d be mad as hell at the 49’ers doing nothing to obtain a top notch QB like Rodgers when he was available at the very least try ? Instead the plan is the waste another year you have a ready made super bowl team minus a top notch QB ? Really that’s the plan ?

  25. Jimmy has been to more playoff games and super bowls than anyone on the Raiders roster.

    All he does is win.

You can make all the excuses you want, the Raiders still suck AND are going to continue to suck for the next 3-5 years.

  27. The only thing Jimmy G. is earning on the Raiders is a lot of money for a below average QB performance. LOL!

Raiders are looking at another last place finish as they continue into their 3rd decade of trash football.

All the Raiders fans were touting playoffs all last season. Who are you the arbiter of season predictions? The Raiders are a mess, terrible defense, still no QB, Gruden/Mayock drama/ no offensive line/Josh McDaniels, LOL! Should I keep going.

Enough with ur “the Raiders were supposed to be”….n0n-sense.

  29. My fellow commenters, you can beat up on Jimmy G and Carr all you want: QB play isn’t why the Raiders keep losing, it’s defense and coaching.

I didn’t make the 2023 predictions. Look closer. You heard the Raiders were going to the playoffs all season? What? They started the season 0-3 and were never even .500. Who were you listening to, PFT forums? The Raiders are a mess. I never said they were not. I stated that they were suppose to be the worst team in their division last season and were not.

  31. I hope his injury luck changes with the Raiders. He’s going to win more than he loses for them.
He was a team leader and well liked in the 49ers locker room; will bring strong leadership to the raiders
