Report: Brandin Cooks trade likely takes Cowboys out of Odell Beckham market

The Cowboys traded for Brandin Cooks on Sunday and that may signal the end of their extended interest in adding another veteran wide receiver to their roster.

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the Cooks acquisition likely takes the Cowboys out of the mix for signing Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason. The Texans are picking up $6 million of Cooks’ $18 million salary for 2023, but a source told Werder it would be hard to fit both Cooks and Beckham into the roster.

The Cowboys met with Beckham late last season as they considered signing him off of a torn ACL, but no deal was struck and Beckham did not play for anyone. There was word earlier this month that they were still interested in Beckham, but did not send anyone to watch the wideout’s recent workout.

Beckham indicated that he hasn’t been happy with the offers he’s received from teams so far this offseason and it doesn’t sound like the Cowboys are going to be the ones to change his view of the situation.

  1. I don’t know how they and Philly are still below the cap. They will be both in trouble like the Rams and Saints soon.

  2. A former Giants player said Beckham is going to be a Ravens playsr like him. Both signed big deals and then the Giants traded them both.

  3. Paying Cooks $12mill and trading draft picks …. tells you what they think of Odell and his demands.

  4. Maybe OBJ could get Lamar’s mom to advise him. She does have experience with unreasonable contract expectations…

  5. There is no Odell Beckham market, it’s been a year plus and he hasn’t signed

  6. Good choice by the Cowboys. Cooks might not be Hopkins, but he’s a far better choice than OBJ.

  7. ObJ keeps trying to keep himself relavent but teams are learning that he isn’t what he once was.

  8. Cooks is better, more reliable/durable, and slightly younger than Beckham. He’s had his attitude problems but has a history of doing well on good teams, and now he’s on a contender.

  9. i feel like teams are rushing to sign anyone OTHER than Beckham, so they don’t get pressured into actually having to Sign him

  10. We’ll have to wait to see who Dallas drafts with their second round pick and Cooks’ stats to determine if this is a good trade. So we should know by the end of the football season.

They’ll pay the price next year ($59M cap hit from Dak’s restructuring) or being stuck with Dak for a longer period.
The only way they’ll be vindicated is if they win the Super Bowl, unlikely as it is. Then they can say it’s good to extend Dak.
If they don’t win it all, they’ll be forced to stay with him and his poor performance in playoffs.

  12. I don’t like the chances of OBJ ever having a 1000 yard season again. When he’s healthy he might still be an excellent receiver, as demonstrated in the Ram’s Super Bowl a year ago. However, I don’t know that OBJ will be able to stay healthy for a full season + playoffs going forward. I just have the feeling that OBJ will be finishing every season going forward on IR. As such, he’ll likely get a prove-it contract with incentives.

  13. I agree about Dak. They brought Cooper Rush back on a multi year deal. If they draft Hooker, I’ll be certain it’s Dak’s last year.

  14. Go out there playing high and drunk of course you’re gonna lose focus and go all twisty turny on your ankle and knee at times. Who’s gonna want to deal with that? He’s proven himself again and again.

  15. Why does Cooks keep getting traded? He might literally be setting the NFL record for most times traded!

  16. Over the hill. Clubhouse cancer. Embarrassing to the organization (see, airport incident). Some prayers are best left unanswered Cowboy fan, and this is one of them.

  17. The letters OBJ hold no swag ,like in the movie Rambo ,ITS OVER JOHNNY,,,,ITS OVER !!!!!

  18. I don’t if Cooks is better than OBJ. All I know is Cooks never proposed to a field goal net.

  19. I meant to say, I am not sure if OBJ is better than Cooks. All I know is Cooks never proposed to a field goal net.

  20. There isn’t even an Odell market to begin with because nobody actually seems to want him.

  21. Seems that teams are willing to trade for a ham sandwich and 2 Kit Kats before making anything other than a prove it offer to OBJ. Dude needs to get the message.

  22. Both OBJ and Cooks are on the backside of their careers. Keep your fingers crossed.

  23. Just go to the Chiefs, explode for one season with Mahomes throwing to you and then fleece some other team after you rebuild your market. Come on OBJ, Pat just got JuJu $11 million a year, he’ll easily be able to get you $15 or so next offseason.

    Everyone wins!

  24. When a guy has 1,000 yard seasons with four teams, and all four can’t get rid of him fast enough, that’s a huge red flag.

  25. OBJ and Lamar both do not understand how the free market works. You do not get paid what you think you deserve.

  26. I don’t think the Cowboys had any interest in Beckham. Every team has ongoing evaluations of all the players in the league, plus free agents. The Cowboys probably would have signed Beckham if they wanted him.

  27. No one is scared of the Cowboys as long as Dak is their QB and Mike McCarthy is calling the plays.

  28. Cooks and Beckham play the position differently. Cooks is a speedster who stretches the field. Beckham wins with size, hands, and positioning. Signing one doesn’t necessarily preclude the other if Beckham’s contract demands are realistic. That’s the rub.

  29. Honestly don’t know why Beckham, aging and coming off a serious injury after being only moderately productive, is such a big deal these days.

  30. Cooks wanting out of Houston is not a one of – these problems go back years, and it’s not related to just winning/losing, although that’s part of it lately. Top players like Duane Brown, Brandon Brooks, Hopkins, Mathieu, Watson, Cunningham, all felt they were not valued, or maybe “respected”, by management and owners. I’m not saying who’s right or wrong, just saying there’s a problem and it doesn’t seem to be getting better.

When a guy has 1,000 yard seasons with four teams, and all four can’t get rid of him fast enough, that’s a huge red flag.

Incorrect information all over the place here. OBJ has had five 1000 yard seasons; 4 with the Giants and 1 with the Browns. The Giants did appear to be happy to get rid of him at the time. With the Browns there was some kind of conflict between OBJ and Baker Mayfield. Virtually any teammates I heard from sided with OBJ. The Browns did whatever they had to do to be rid of Baker when he was traded to the Panthers, as evidenced by the Browns picking up ~ $10M of Baker’s salary last season. OBJ was productive with the Rams and they wanted him back. However, the Rams quickly slid into irrelevance after their Super Bowl win so a deal didn’t make sense for either party.
Having said the above, OBJ’s problems are his injury history, his age and his outsized contract expectations. No team is going to come running to spend big money on a 30 year old WR likely to end the season on IR.

  32. He’s unsigned not because of dollars or years. It’s because of contract language if he gets hurt again. Teams want injury protection with the knee (same knee twice). Odell likely can’t even insure himself, teams definitely can’t get coverage they like. There’s also the issue of a weakness and overcompensation with the other leg. Odell needs to holla at T2 and take the best offer for him. Teams might take a flyer on him and use him as 4th option if he doesn’t wise up.

  33. Odell can’t get by on 4M/year. What is this world coming to. Meanwhile, I saw a guy eating out of the garbage can at In N Out.

  34. Mike McCarthy is likely wiping his brow with the Cooks signing. OBJ would have turned a very interesting locker room into chaos.Good luck to any team that signs him.

  35. I don’t think Dallas was IN the OJB market. They never sent anyone to his public workout.

    ==================================

Saints are just over $15 million under the cap. They have more cap space than 19 teams including the Rams, Philly and the Cowboys.

  37. OBJ not happy with offers. Lamar not happy with offers. Good news, they can do other things than play football in the NFL. What makes life great!

  38. It’s been a true pleasure not hearing about AB all llast year …looking forward to the time we don’t hear about OBJ when he drops off the NFL map.
