Baker Mayfield: I won’t try to be Tom Brady, I’m going to be me

Baker Mayfield is officially a Buccaneer, having signed his contract on Monday morning.

In his introductory press conference on Monday afternoon, Mayfield said he figured he would have to be patient as the rest of the quarterback market took shape in free agency.

But when the Buccaneers emerged as a suitor, Mayfield thought it felt right.

“An organization like this, that’s had success, obviously, for a while and in recent years as well — it was important to me to be in a place that’s stable and knows how to win, knows how to do it properly,” Mayfield said. “I’ve gotten to see different things from my journey that’s not exactly how I drew it up. But, it’s helped along the way, especially to make a decision like this.

“And I want to go somewhere that we can win right away and this is that place.”

Mayfield is expected to compete with Kyle Trask to start for the Bucs this year and become the successor to Tom Brady. But Mayfield isn’t trying to make too much of replacing TB12.

“Listen, I’m never going to be Tom Brady,” Mayfield said. “There’s a reason why he’s won so many Super Bowls. He’s the greatest of all time — there’s no doubt about that. I’m not going to try to be Tom. I’m going to be me. That’s what’s gotten me to this point. We’re going to do it differently.

“But that’s what makes this league so special. Everybody puts their own touch on it. It’s an honor to follow up somebody like that. And I’m definitely — the people that played with him around here, I’m going to pick their brains for things he did, there’s no doubt about that. So, I’m excited.”

Mayfield has a $2 million guaranteed salary, a $2 million roster bonus, and can make up to $4.5 million more in incentives with the Buccaneers this year.

  1. I’m pretty sure that if they are being offered the choice Tampa fans want you to be Tom Brady.

  2. There is something about this guy that I like. I know he has a lot of haters, and I get that, but he was completely screwed over by Cleveland. I sure hope this guy finds his form and becomes a quality starter in the NFL (and crushes Cleveland the next time they play).

  3. Nobody’s expecting Mayfield to remotely resemble Brady. I imagine Tampa fans would be thrilled if he looked like a consistent, middle-of-the-road starter.

  4. Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield. Using those two names in the same sentence should be a felony…

  5. Oh no Baker! You’ve summoned every navel gazing Patriots fan in the tri state area! DATS RITE YOU AINT TAWMY!

  6. Well when the statement is taken out of context in the headline it sounds worse than what he really meant in his whole comment. Baker has big shoes to fill in Tampa Bay replacing one of the best QBs to play the game and he was bringing expectations way back down to earth. Sounds sensible to me. Hopefully he can match the Dalton scale which is the benchmark of an average QB as that would be a big accomplishment right now for him.

  7. Dude looked like Bernie’s in weekend at Bernie’s while the refs and rams held him up, try cfl, xfl arena football.

  8. He looked alot more like Carson Wentz or Zack Wilson last season. He may be the biggest bust in NFL history when you consider the amount of talent he has played with. You can build a pro bowl roster off of the talented players he wasted.

  9. Judging by Tomasina’s last year, that would be a good thing not to be him.

Oh how quickly they forget Johnny Football

It would be a career year for Baker.

  12. TB fans had better get ready for a lot of batted balls at the line of scrimmage. That will happen.

  13. I’ll tell you what I miss no one and i mean no one in all of sports did better commercials then Baker did. Those Progressive commercials were better than 3/4 off all sitcoms on now and they were what 60-90 seconds long.

  14. His contract says he is a camp arm that they hope can be more.

As for being on his 4th team in under 2 years, try not to read into that more than it is.

  15. Baker played behind an august, run-blocking O-line in Cleveland, yet HC Stefanski coached against the run. And then Baker played in Carolina where the O-line was hap-hazard and the HC didn’t want him. Then Baker went to the Rams and played behind a decimated O-line, and depleted WR and RB groups. And now he’s in Tampa Bay, home of the “big sombrero”, with a muddle-brained HC and a Forest Gump-type OC. And the Tampa fans are hoping for a winning season, when the GOAT himself couldn’t salvage it.

  16. Baker Mayfield with a roster, particularly the offensive line, like Tampa Bay had in 2020 and 2021, would be really really good.

  17. for those always wanting to dog Tom Z(which I get), :
Tom Brady had a passer rating of 90.7 with 4,694 yards, 25 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 17 games between

not too shabby for a 44 year old noodle armed washed up whtevertheckelseyallsay qb

  18. Cleveland here. Stat kicking some ass Baker. Cleveland was/is a grease fire looking for a place to burn. Look at this as a blessing. If NFL fans think we are rallying around Watson and Haslam that’s not happening. He did what he did and for Jimmy Haslam to tell us he needed the approval of his wife and daughters before he would sign Watson is a slap in our faces. We believed that never happened.

  19. Unfortunately for Baker, Buc fans will be comparing him to Brady. Luckily for Baker, Brady had an off year, going 8-9. If Baker can lead the Bucs to a winning season, he will be accepted by the fans.

And Jamarcus Russell. And Ryan Leaf. And…
Baker is nowhere near an actual bust, let alone the biggest one.

He is definitely a bust. One good year and booted as a number overall pick equals bust. Leaf and Russell played on teams with zero talent. Russell was like 7th in a line of like 12 straight Raiders first round picks who were straight bust. I doubt any QB in the last 20 years played more All pros over a 5 year span than Baker Mayfield has and he is still garbage.
