Devin McCourty: Some Patriots players wanted Bailey Zappe, some wanted Mac Jones

The arguments about whether the Patriots should have started Bailey Zappe or Mac Jones at quarterback last season weren’t limited to fans and the media. Patriots players were split on the subject as well.

That’s the word from Devin McCourty, who retired this month after 13 seasons with the Patriots. McCourty said he had teammates last year in both camps, and that the split said more about the overall ineffectiveness about the offense than either quarterback individually.

“I think there were some guys in the locker room that were like ‘Let’s go with Zappe.’ Or ‘No, Mac looked good today.’ It was just a back and forth, which to me, spoke more about what we had on offense than the quarterback. We never were solidified as an offensive group that guys had full confidence in anything we were doing. There was never true hope,” McCourty said on WEEI, via ESPN.com.

A third-string fourth-round rookie who played only one season of major college football, Zappe was surprisingly effective last season, leading the Patriots to back-to-back wins after both Jones and Brian Hoyer got injured. Some thought the Patriots should have stuck with Zappe, but as soon as Jones was cleared he returned to the starting lineup, and Zappe returned to the sideline.

82 responses to “Devin McCourty: Some Patriots players wanted Bailey Zappe, some wanted Mac Jones

  1. That third string fourth round rookie broke Joe Burrows FBS records for single season TD passes with 62 and single season passing yards with 5,967.

  2. If you’re relying on either of those two QBs the seasons already lost. I actually like Zappe though but he needs more time in the lab developing, his ceiling is higher than Man and Cheese’s though who never should of been drafted in rd1 and wouldn’t of been had he not of played at Bama.

  3. Mac was allowed to fail over and over while Zappe had a short lease. Zappe simply looked like the better QB. But since Mac was an idiotic first round selection, BB chose to stick with him. Remember when all of you mini GMs thought he was the steal of the draft? I still chuckle at the one. I said he would be a bust then and he’s a bust now.

  4. Zappe looked really good in the 2 games he started, and the Pats played their 2 best games of the season too.

  5. Turning the offense over to an ex-defensive coordinator and the QB coach job to the ex-special teams guy because you had nothing else for them to do would’ve gotten most coaches fired.

The macaroni Jones decade of dominance will never be denied! freedom!
    ——————————————————————————
A highly regarded U.S. college Quarterback doesn’t get drafted in the first round of the highest professional Football league in the World with a “noodle arm”. Ignorance isn’t funny it simply is ignorance.

  7. Zappe was effective until he went up against real defenses. Then the weakness of the play calling and the lack of actual offensive playmakers was obvious, and he folded as well. Like McCourty said… it wasn’t really about the QBs, it was about the offense. No hope for anyone.

  8. When players are split and its a season long thing then that’s on coaching and keeping the locker room in order. For as much credit as Belichick gets he also needs to get the criticism on instances like this. That doesn’t mean he’s poor t it in general it just means he did a poor job if it last yr.

  9. “We never were solidified as an offensive group that guys had full confidence in anything we were doing. There was never true hope,” McCourty said on WEEI, via ESPN.com.”

Yeah. This entire quote said a lot more about the 2 bozos running the Patriots offense last season than it did about the two quarterbacks.

  10. This is why players get payed to play and coaches and talent evaluators get paid to coach and evaluate.

  11. McCourty basically concludes that QB didn’t matter, because Bill Belichick gave control of the offense to two complete nincompoops, Patricia and Judge. I’m not a big Mac Jones fan, but the Patriot’s ineptitude in 2022 was Belichick’s fault more than anyone else’s.

  12. Zappe is an average and serviceable backup QB. He does not show that talent or tools to be a starter in the NFL. The Patriots should be asking themselves why he was outplaying their first-round pick starting QB.

  13. I’m sure many players didn’t appreciate Mac screaming like a toddler from a high ankle sprain. Patrick Mahomes had similar injury and toughed it out.

  14. Since Brady walked the offense has been atrocious. He covered up BB’s lack of ability to consistently draft offensive talent for decades. Mac Jones can’t pull that off

  15. Love this actually. A perspective, truthful insight from not only a well respected Patriot, but NFL player in general. It just speaks more about how the whole Patricia/Judge fiasco really played more into both QBs performance. Not making excuses to support Mac, but it gives more solidified reason(s) why not just Mac but the whole offense was bad. O’Brien has an “easy” opportunity to clean the mess up.

  16. BB not gonna like this kind of comment, even though Devin is now retired and free to speak

  17. This is why players get payed to play and coaches and talent evaluators get paid to coach and evaluate.

No. This is about why Matt Patricia was given leave to find a new job elsewhere.

  18. The truism that when you have a battle between your two quarterbacks it means that you have none has never been more accurate.

I think Bill is on the hot seat this season. Now that the offense is in capable hands, or we assume it is, then there’s no more excuses. The pressure is on now to be better. Another losing season and I think Kraft will make a change. I didn’t see Bill sticking around after this year so maybe he will anyway.

Brady didn’t want it drafted. BB bought of traded for talent. That was per Brady (Moss and Welker).

BB had to deal Moss in 2010 because Brady sucked from Weeks 1-4, as Brady ignored a guy named Gronk (and Hernandez).

It’s laughable to proclaim BB didn’t surround Brady with talent.

Brady wanted the attention Manning was getting for stats and then his postseasons turned into eggs like Manning’s. It went from a Manning Face to Brady Face.

Took years for BB to fix Brady and it came in the form of Brady possibly being dealt away.

Thanks to BB..For everything. Thanks to bringing in so many Hall of Famers beyond Brady.

  24. Mac will be given every opportunity to shine this year. The Pats need to know if he is the future. Zappe with a year two jump may surprise, but the job belongs to Mac barring injury.

Then Mac Jones is not the long term answer. We watched Patrick Mahomes win the SB after losing Tyreek Hill, Joe Burrow make the SB with the worst offensive line. Mac will need to overcome deficiencies or the Patriots will move on next year.

  26. Brady wanted the attention Manning was getting for stats and then his postseasons turned into eggs like Manning’s. It went from a Manning Face to Brady Face.

Oh no question he did. He was so jealous fans loved Peyton Manning’s game and despise a weak arm QB that throws 2 yard passes who the media pretends is good. So he started cheating. Too bad he was dumb enough to smash his cell phone or he would have gotten away with it.

How can you be the greatest GM and Coach in Cap Era history, hence NFL history, and be a “mediocre” GM?

It simply makes no sense. Unless the Chiefs win another SB this year, or some other team forms at least 1 dynasty, there is no case to be made.

Who was a better GM? Bill Polian? LOL

    Ted Thompson? Ozzie Newsome? LOL

    I mean, just name a GM……You can’t do it.

I agree with your last point. But the fact remains Bill is an elite coach being a HOF lock. Bruce Arians is also an elite coach in my opinion. An excellent coach at worst. When Tom Brady no longer benefited from two elite coaches, he couldn’t carry his team and finished with a losing record. It really was eye opening.

Peyton Manning didn’t have a problem winning with a subpar coach. Tommy sure did though. I wonder why. And let’s not call that “Brady leading his team to a playoff appearance last season”. No he didn’t. His team had a losing record and got their faces caved in by Dak Prescott at home proving they never belonged there.

Brady did not walk. To the contrary, the Patriots decided to move on.

Do we really have to list all of the offensive stars that BB has drafted or acquired over the decades, starting with Brady himself. How about Gronkowski, Welker, Branch, Moss, Dillon, and many offensive linemen for starters.

  33. All the Mac hate…. I LOVE IT!!!
it just shows me that fans out there still fear what he can do, especially with a real offensive coordinator & line coach…… you all do realize that last year he had no OC, QB coach, O-Line coach & Josh took 7 assistant coaches with him…. Then Bill put Patricia & Judge in positions they had ZERO QUALIFICATIONS to be in….
Zappe looked good for 2 games against the 2 WORST DEFENSES in the NFL….. Macs ROOKIE YEAR he went 10-7…. Just a glimpse of his ability with proper coaching & minimal talent around him…. This is gonna be a much better year for him even having the 3rd toughest schedule in the NFL IN 2023….. FA has been great so far & looking forward to the draft having 11 picks!!!
Doubt him or trash talk him all you want, but he will be AWESOME in the Pats system now that correct coaching has been implemented
    Go Pats!!!!

  34. Zappe looked good for 2 games against the 2 WORST DEFENSES in the NFL
    —-
Very true. And did he really “look good” though?

vs Packers: completed 10 passes not even 100 yards including OT
vs Lions: Only had one TD against a team that spotted him 5 fourth down stops or whatever it was. Meh. Running game and defense won that game.
vs Browns: YAC. Defense. Nuff said.
    vs Bears: No explanation necessary.

Serviceable backup that can keep your team in a game in small doses but like any other backup he has a short expiry date.

  35. Reminds me of the great “Losman/Edwards” debate in Buffalo.

It was interesting how New England had Zappe fever for awhile, culminating in that game where the fans booed Mac pretty loudly, reminding America of how entitled they’ve become. Mac Jones is not a bad QB at all, and could flourish w/ the new coach and some real receivers.

His skillset still poses some limitations in terms of ceiling, but he can be a capable starter for them.

I’m so tired of that line. It’s fortune cookie wisdom but not valid. Jones had a decent rookie year but obviously regressed under the thumbs of Patrica and Judge last year. Zappe performed well in his 2 games but that’s a short resume to draw from.
The Patriots now have Bill O’Brien back as OC, let the competition begin. For all we know (which isn’t much after last year’s debacle) the Patriots might have 2 good QBs and be in great shape at that position.

  37. Devin is right, the whole offence was a big problem, however Zappe looked far better than Jones, who’s turned out be a busted flush!
    Zappa should start this season

  38. JMHO, but that’s the first real knock I have on Belichick. He put his loyalty to his 2 failed HCs over the team. Those 2 clowns just got a PHD on their shortcomings to be a head coach, with BB putting them in charge of the offense. He completely screwed over his starting QB (baby Huey).

I don’t think we ever spent up to the cap in those days, so I don’t think that was the issue. I loved it when we had Bledsoe. He had his flaws, but was also capable of some great QB play.

With both Losman and Edwards, it’s hard to say how good or bad they were, or how ready. The Bills were so bad at that point in both constructing teams and developing QB’s. I think either might have flourished in another system potentially, or they may have both just not been starting caliber.

Zappe seemed to play a lot more loose than Mac did. I think the biggest problem is Mac let his rookie season go to his head. Playoff berth and a pro bowl. Then last year he came crashing back to earth. Blame the coaches all you want, the players still have to play the game. Mac made a ton of terrible decisions last year. He didn’t look like a 1st rd pick. If he struggles like that again this next season I don’t think he’ll be a Patriot for long.

  48. The first question McCourty should’ve been asked in response was “Let’s exclude the defensive players like yourself. What was the talk on the offensive side of the ball, from the people who actually worked with them and might actually know what they are talking about?”

Tommy the garbage can’t win without elite coaching. Proved it this season.

Just out of curiosity, what was your reaction when the garbage signed Cam Newton? you fans of Belichick the garbage must have really really really short memory.

I was very happy that Tommy the garbage was sent packing that’s my reaction. Otherwise I would no longer be a Patriots fan until he was gone.

  62. That is not what I asked, Benny.

What is your reaction when Belichick the clueless signed Cam Newton?

    Who is Benny?

I told you what my reaction was. Not my problem if you’re triggered by it 🙂

Benny Hill had very short memory, am I right?

I don’t care what Benny Hill thinks of Tom Brady

How come Tommy can’t win without elite coaching? I though he was the greatest of all time…

He made a garbage look like a genius.

Coulda fooled me. Zero winning seasons for Tommy without elite coaching. ZERO.

No wonder he decided to cheat.

Benny Hill sits in front of a computer and feels so good about himself.
    ——
Good for him. I wonder if he enjoyed Brady’s 8-10 season ending by getting clown stomped by the Cowboys as much as I did! 🤭🤭🤭

  69. Belichick’s clarification still highlights his track record when trying to justify his performance the last couple years.

Having Patricia and Judge as OCs was a fireable offense.
