Goodell’s new deal will run through early 2027

Pete Rozelle left at age 63. Paul Tagliabue was 65 when he stepped down. The current Commissioner will soon be on track to last until age 68, or longer.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that the new deal for Roger Goodell, who turned 64 last month, will last until spring 2027.

It remains unknown whether the new deal will be Goodell’s last one, or whether the latest arrangement requires affirmative succession planning. Currently, there’s no one who is being prepared to take over for Goodell.

The owners, most of whom are significantly older than Goodell, presumably would prefer that he remain in the job indefinitely. They still would be wise to have a clear plan in place for the future. Even a ship cruising clear, open waters needs a captain who will avoid finding an iceberg into which it will be steered.

The new deal will be final if at least 24 of the owners approve it. There’s currently no reason to believe the proposed contract will be rejected.

  1. How much money and working does a guy need to do? He could drop dead tomorrow. Retire and enjoy the millions, he won the game, go enjoy it.

  2. There’s no reason not to stay on the job until he’s 85. I mean, it’s not physical work. Sit a desk, make phone calls and shuffle papers all day. Roger isn’t going anywhere. He’s going to die in office.

  3. The famous Charles Munger, Warren Buffett’s man, is wondering why the fuss about Roger Goodell’s age?

  4. Will he pass $50 million a year? If so, maybe the increase will be a case of gratitude for hiding the dirt and stashing all the dirty laundry.

  5. Know what, hate Goodell or not, he is leading the league during its most prosperous and successful time and making his owners lots of money. Thats the commish’s job. And my goodness he looks young for 64. Remember rozzell and tags looked ancient at this age.

  6. Anyone who has ever been a supervisor, manager, director, etc knows that management is extremely difficult, which is why people at higher levels get paid so much more. Most employees have no clue until they are promoted and have to wrangle all the different personalities, demands for different things, HR crap, all the damn meetings, having to learn ‘agile’ and other management techniques, etc. The biggest issue is that the employees are a pain in the backside because you have the ‘rock stars’, the slackers, the ones that need micromanagement but claim that they don’t, dealing with granting/denying time off, explaining policies (and interpretation) to employees who don’t (or won’t) understand, and dealing with unions.
THIS is why Goodell gets paid what he gets paid.

  7. Yay Goodell! He sucks as a commissioner for the fans, but hey, he is good at making money for the owners.

  8. Never has a man made so much for doing so little.
Nice gig if you can get it.

    No.

Goodell didn’t invent tv, fantasy football or gambling. Selling out and being corrupt like agent orange, fooling people for the almighty dollar, isn’t impressive. He’s a snake oil salesman at its finest.

  10. Roger will be the highest paid NFL employee of all time. $70+ mill a year for what exactly? Tom Brady wishes we could be as wealthy as a guy who never took a snap.

  11. It’s ridiculous! I’m not sure what the difference is between the NFL cartel and the Italian Mafia! Goodell should be behind bars for signing the illegal loan for Dan Snyder without his partner’s knowledge or signatures alone! Instead, they held the minority owners hostage to agree not to prosecute so that they could get rid of both him and Snyder! Who the hell signs that corrupt of a “commissioner” to a new deal?! It’s just stinky, disgusting corruption and explains how a worm like Snyder ever could have owned a franchise! It also concerns me about how sleazy the new owners are, if Snyder sells!

  12. The Patriots should be stripped of a 1st round pick for this outrage!

  13. Most overpaid person in the US.

He’s in line behind your congressman and state senator.

  14. My question to people like him is why? You already have millions, go enjoy it in retirement while you’re still young. i just don’t get it.

I think you mean agent orange and the fact he doesn’t pay taxes like you and I. Goodell operate in the same way.

You can kind of tell who people vote for by the comments. People get duped by people in suits and root them on as if it’s a good thing what they’re doing.

The only other commissioner who got caught lying was Bud Selig, but Goodell has been caught many times.

  16. By 2027 Jerry Jones will have finally enough owners to vote for a new Commissioner.

  17. As long as he keeps increasing the value of each team around 20%/yr, the Owners will keep him until he is 100. SMH at the fanboys lack of business knowledge.

They’re ALL in line behind your college football coaches. They’re usually the highest paid state employees when employed by a state school.

  19. For all of you wanting Goodell out, what makes you think a new commissioner will be any different? What would he or she do different? The commissioner works for the owners. The NFL is the top sport in this country and its making money hand over fist. As long as the owners believe he’s doing a good job he will stay commissioner.

  20. Whatever he’s making, he’s grossly underpaid. The NFL franchises are the best investment you can find. They literally print money. Each franchise appreciates in value billions of dollars every few years. Amazing, considering half the owners inherited the team and wouldn’t know how to run a popsicle stand at a profit. Goodell should be making $250 per year.

You still say some of the strangest things on here by anyone. You actually called some hack player recently a future HOFer. It was such an outlandish statement, I actually forget who the player was.

A monkey could do what Goodell does. He does nothing but show up and dodge direct questions once a year in front of camera before the SB.

The best was when he was asked a diversity question by Jim Trotter in early February and Goodell literally spent the entire time answering, by diverting from the basic question.

He’s coached well by VILE lawyers at 345 Park Ave. It’s not a good quality trait.

Jim Trotter’s mic was cut off after Goodell opened up his statement with “I don’t work in the NFL newsroom at NFL Network”. We’ll check in again with our people.”

In fact, Trotter asked the exact same question, the same week to Goodell, the year before.

Sitting on camera with squinty eyes like you care and acting like you’re telling the truth, is as old as dirt in this country.

This is the one! So hilarious. He has overseen the most prosperous time in nfl history, and has somehow convinced a lot of you that he’s the bad guy and the 32 billionaires are NOT making all the decisions. Brilliant! The dude is underpaid. And many of you still have no clue what’s happening.

How would you know about any of that?

  24. There must be a lot he does behind the scenes.

I just don’t understand what he has done to keep his job.

To me it seems like the NFL has bungled many things.
Was he the one who negotiated favorable CBAs? Or was it that the NFLPA are clowns?

  25. The economy will eventually catch up with the Goodell and the NFL
    and other professional sports.

    ——–

Exactly. And given that he works *for the owners*, making money for them is all that matters.

Here’s a good analogy: It’s like the NFL is a restaurant and Goodell is the manager. It’s the most popular place in town, there’s always a line to get in, and people keep coming back because they love the food. The customers never actually interact with the manager and they have no idea what he really does. Everybody knows that the joint’s owner is making a ton of money from the place. Yet somehow, the customers feel like they have a right to be outraged when they find out the manager makes a lot more money than they do, and they think the guy should be fired because he doesn’t run the place like they would.

  27. Hey. Let’s put in a Commissioner Cap just like him and the owners make THEM play with.

  28. Goodell is the owners Hinchman. His job is to keep the wolves [fans, media, lawyers, politicians] at bay. So far he has done a decent job at that. If the owners were unhappy, they would show him the door in a heartbeat. As long as they are fat and happy, so is Goodell.

  29. here’s to 5 more years of dropping the hammer on cheaters!
    ——————
There is a proliferation of 300+ pound men running ridiculous 40’s. Yup, Goodell is a real Eliot Ness.

To the ESPN types who suggest these magical athletes make the sport more fun—I’m not sure about that. It certainly makes the sport more dangerous and hardly anyone can stay healthy.

  30. Protect the Shield? Nope. Massively overpay one of the least competent administrators US sports has seen so he can tarnish it further.

The job really is nowhere near tough enough to merit such a huge salary. Drawing fire away from the owners is an abundantly available skill. Being present when others negotiate television deals is not an executive level skill. So all of the plainly evident negatives Goodell brings to the table are being balanced by skills that could be bought far more cheaply.

  31. Goodell’s “stewardship” is the epitome of the greed that drives the league. Crooked owners, the league in bed with gambling, suspect officials, etc. A huge scandal is inevitable.

  32. You still say some of the strangest things on here by anyone.
