In dealing with the Packers, it’s time for the Jets to act like New Yorkers

It’s been a week since quarterback Aaron Rodgers made a public plea for the Packers to be reasonable in their expectations from the Jets. In the past seven days, neither team has budged.

The Packers, as Rodgers said, are digging in their heels. The Packers, as we have reported, are content to wait until the draft to do a deal. The Packers, as I personally believe, have allowed the situation to become petty, and personal.

It’s not personal. It’s strictly business. And it’s time for the Jets to take a page from the Marty Lyons playbook and give the Packers the business.

These are the New York Jets. Technically, the New Jersey Jets. They should start demonstrating some of the attitude that those in their fan base would exhibit when dealing with difficult people in challenging situations.

The Jets need to go on the offensive. They perhaps need to be a little offensive. They need to tell the Packers how it’s going to be.

Why do you think Packers CEO Mark Murphy has suddenly opted to zip it? They know they’re running a grift by acting like they have the upper hand.

They don’t. They owe Rodgers nearly $60 million, fully guaranteed, for 2023. If they don’t trade him by Week One, his $58.3 million roster bonus becomes 2023 base salary — sending his cap number through the roof.

Amazingly, there are smart (supposedly) people who think the Packers actually have the leverage here. Much of the media has fallen in line with that mindset.

But the Jets don’t need Rodgers right now. They don’t need him for the early stages of the offseason program. They arguably don’t need him for OTAs, not when he: (1) knows the playbook like the back of his giant hand; and (2) probably doesn’t want to show up before training camp, anyway.

It’s always critical, in a deadline-driven business, to get two negotiating parties to agree on the deadline. The Packers think the deadline is draft. The Jets should take the initiative and say, “No, it’s the start of training camp.”

The Jets should make a non-negotiable offer that will remain open until the 2023 draft. They should tell the Packers that, after the 2023 draft, the non-negotiable offer will pivot to the 2024 draft — and possibly 2025, in the event Rodgers plays in 2024. They should tell the Packers the non-negotiable offer stays on the table until training camp opens.

At the same time, Rodgers should tell the Packers that, if he’s not traded before the start of training camp, he’ll be showing up, just like Brett Favre did 15 years ago. Rodgers should tell the Packers that he’ll be there, and that he’ll stay there, until he’s traded.

Rodgers also should tell the Packers that he fully expects to participate in practice (by rule, the team can’t put him on ice), creating the risk that he’ll suffer a season-ending injury that will put the Packers firmly on the hook for his full compensation package.

It will take coordination and commitment from the Jets and Rodgers to pull this off. But the Packers have been punking the Jets in part because the Packers believe they can. The Jets need to punch back, aggressively, to make the Packers realize that they don’t hold the cards on this.

Taking an aggressive stand with the Packers would have a collateral benefit. Rodgers clearly wants someone to take up his cause that the Packers are being prickly (or prick-y) about the situation. If the Jets tell the Packers to shove your feckin’ cheese up your ass, Rodgers will become even more determined to do everything he can to repay the Jets with a great performance in 2023.

Hell, maybe he’ll even gather his future teammates in California or wherever to get acquainted with them, on and off the field, as he moves closer to inevitably becoming a member of the team.

That’s the reality here. He will inevitably be a Jet. At the very absolute latest, it will happen just before Week One. The practical deadline is (or should be) the opening of camp. The sooner the Packers realize that, no, they don’t have the better of the leverage here, the sooner the deal will be done and everyone can move on.

And the best way to make that happen will be for the Jets to start acting like they’re from the place where the state bird is the middle finger.

  1. The only way the Pack can get any leverage is if there’s a 2nd suitor for Rodgers. Absent that, it’s the Jets with the leverage and everyone should know this.

  2. As someone who has lived in NY, I can tell you that NO ONE Likes New Yorkers. They are rude, obnoxious, entitled, ill-mannered, and angry people who just want to mug non-NYers. They can have their dirty, infested, disgusting, overpopulated city.

  3. At the same time, Rodgers should tell the Packers that, if he’s not traded before the start of training camp, he’ll be showing up, just like Brett Favre did 15 years ago. Rodgers should tell the Packers that he’ll be there, and that he’ll stay there, until he’s traded.
    ==========

And if the Packers are dumb enough to allow that, they should just close up shop.

That was their biggest mistake in 2008. They let the circus come to town.

  4. I’ve always said, just make a fair deal. If Packers want a first rounder, they are not being realistic. If the Jets want to only trade a single 5th rounder or less, they are not being realistic. Just make a fair deal. Try this: Flip 15 and 13. Jets keep a first round pick, they just move down two spots. On the value chart, that’s 100 points, which is the equivalent to a fourth round pick (or compensatory late third). In addition, look at either this years second rounder going to Packers from Jets, or next year’s second as a conditional pick, that could be a first if Rodgers plays in 2024 and meets certain criteria. That’s it. Done deal.

  5. Please, how do the Jets have the upper hand? the Packers do not have to do anything until September. who is to say Jordon love does not have a Trey Lance injury in preseason. Ok Aaron, You are QB #1. If he refuses he gets suspended. and the Jets have whoever they pull in off the street. NY tough guy? Give me a break. The Jets only leverage appears as it gets closer to the start of the season.

  6. The cap hit if the stays or goes isn’t that much different. The Jets don’t want him missing the off season. The playbook changes from week to week let alone each year. He has no relationship with the WRs on the team except Lazzard and how did that work out last year in Green Bay last year? Jets can try to play hard all they want, the Packers still have what they not only want but need now. Lets not pretend trading for Stafford is an acceptable solution. He is done and wasn’t even that great the year they won the Super Bowl leading the league in INTs.

  7. So, GB has no leverage, but you’re suggesting NYers become more obnoxius than they normally are? WHy would they need to do that if the Jets have the leverage? Contradict yourself much?

The wisest thing GB can do is wait until June 1 to avoid the huge dead money hit they’ll take on.

If GB wanted picks they should have quietly dealt Rodgers after 2020 and let Rodger’s new team give him the silly contract for better value. So, the draft picks aren’t as important to GB as the money is. The contract is ludicrous for what Rodgers has been doing and performing.

The Jets need up their offer, clearly.

And, the longer the Jets pretend they have leverage, the worse it gets. Any time wasted for a 40 year old QB mmoving into hell’s kitchen with pressure like he’s never felt before, is valuable time wasted across the board. It will only get worse for the Jets.

Rodgers not only needs to move, he needs to get to know an entire new environment.

    GB with the leverage.

  8. How do the Packers not have the upper hand? Rodgers is their asset and the Jets want said asset. The Packers may want to be rid of Rodgers or they may be perfectly fine with their MVP coming back, either way, they have a set asking price and the Jets either need to bite or go another direction.

  9. Total bull. Look how Rodgers performed last year after skipping OTAs–you seriously think he’ll be fine in a brand new environment without putting the work in? He needs the practice reps as much as anybody. The Packers don’t have to trade him. Pushing the “let’s act like NYers” line is pure arrogance. Did they think trading for a 4-time MVP from one of the league’s most storied franchises would be rasy? The Jets haven’t been relevant since Namath. Give me a break.

  10. Act like New Yorkers. Lol. Good stuff. As a guy that grew up in Philly and now lives in South Florida, I know precisely what he means.

  11. Everyone picking on the Packers. If Rodgers is so spectacular and special, then the Jets need quit being so cheap and pay the price for their new MVP QB.

Fail to see how this is a Packers problem. Pay up NY…

  12. The Packers have no beef with the Jets. They are sticking it to Rodgers. It’s personal.

  13. The Jets should have Aaron Charles Rodgers force the pathetic Packers hand by giving them a hard deadline to make the trade happen or he will wreak havac on their salary cap 60 million plus ducats.

  14. Another benefit is that the Jets get to save face from being unable to get Rodgers in for OTA’s and mini camp.

  15. As a lifelong New Yorker what exactly does that mean? Act like a New Yorker? New York is a big state lol. Not all of us are rude or even intelligent. Look at our politicians and DA’s. . The Jets need to wait the Packers out. Play the long game. Take it to the draft. If having guts is a New York thing I dont think we have that market cornered.

  16. The packers originally planned on having Rodgers with them for 2023 at the 60M cap number. If he stays with GB, and whether he plays or not, I don’t think much changes for the packers. They will start Love and have Rodgers as a backup. At the end of 2023, Rodgers will be another year older and may not have recent tape to back his play up if he doesn’t play 2023. If the Jets still want Rodgers after that, they will be most likely in a bidding war with other teams for the free agent in 2024.

Idk. To me it seems like the Packers hold the keys here. The Packers know the Jets need Rodgers for 2023. The Jets need to fork over what the Packers want.

  17. Now I’m more confident then ever the Packers hold the better hand since Florio thinks the Jets do .
His contract is not that simple about 40 % is backloaded over three seasons we can play hardball with him also by telling him sit and watch the 1st QB Love . The Jet fan base would burn down Jets headquarters if there starting QB was Zach Wilson many would not show up for the games it could be half full. The hype bullet train has left the station and the fans undeniably want Rodgers at the controls.

  18. So ironic how much he cried about them drafting Jordan Love when he is replicating (literally) the Favre route. ‘All time great’ with one ring from 14 years ago. The Packers may want to do a deal before they get stuck paying $60mil to not win anything again.

  19. I have no clue why anyone thinks the Packers have any type of upper hand. Is there a secret bidding war the rest of us are not aware of?

I agree the Jets should just tell the Packers take it or leave it. This shouldn’t be that difficult. Here’s our offer and if you don’t like it, you’re (the Packers) are stuck with a $60M back up QB.

  20. Packers get 2023 #2nd rd #3rd picks and 2024 #3rd #4th picks seems both simple and fair.

  21. The Jets have the leverage of course. What will the Packers do if they don’t trade him? Take him back? Try to trade him elsewhere? Cut him? There are no good alternatives.

  22. Disagree. Leaving this transaction open during the draft all but ensures another team will step up with an offer. Things get crazy during the draft and the Jets could find themselves missing out on the veteran WB they need.

  23. Neither team has greater leverage, thus the stalemate. The Packers desperately want to get rid of him, but know his value as a future HOF 2xMVP QB. And the Jets have no other options.

  24. Who cares?!
Neither of these teams are going nowhere…with, or without Rodgers…

  25. There is no urgency for the Jets to acquire a QB with a 1 and done track record in the playoffs.

  26. Truth.

I realize there’s some people with an emotional investment here, but the Packers hold very little leverage, although I have found those claiming otherwise to be a consistent source of amusement.

This is an oversimplification, but for those of you who believe the Packers have leverage here, think of the outcome for both teams if this trade doesn’t happen:

Jets: They go back to building a talented young team via the draft and they have a high pick in the 1st round. Perhaps they make a trade for a stop gap QB for a season, go 9-8 or 10-7 and stack the deck to go after a bigtime QB next year. Not what they want, but not a disaster for a young, talented team with a good coach.

Packers: A 60 million dollar albatross is hung around their collective neck. They’ve moved on mentally from AR and having him in camp is unthinkable due to the distraction it would create. There are no other known trade partners so they can try to give him away to another team or they can cut him and take a massive cap hit. Their only options there are a pre or post June 1 cut with the latter spreading out the hit over two seasons. Mind you, they’re going to take a big dead money hit on a trade, but at least they’re getting capital back for him in that scenario.

The Packers have little to no leverage here.

    ———————————————————————-

whoops. Didnt realize he was on the books for 3 more seasons after 2023. Still, I dont see that changing much as they can get out next year with a much less dead cap penalty.

  28. The Jets should start negotiations with Lamar Jackson. Even if they don’t want to sign him. It would get the Packers FO off their delusions and realize they could get stuck with Rodgers.

  29. NY football fans and media are soft and wimpy. I don’t understand how the Jets used the overall #2 pick in the draft on a QB two years ago, and nobody is holding anyone accountable. The same can be said of the Packers. They traded up to get a QB in the first round three years ago, and nobody seems to remember. These two teams should be very well set at QB for the next 15 years, but instead, they’re playing a tug-of-war over Aaron Rodgers. Why would anyone need Aaron Rodgers if they recently drafted a QB in the first round, unless they don’t know what they’re doing. And, if they don’t know what they’re doing, how is the media blind to that? I don’t ever want to hear another thing about the big, bad New York media, or their fans. They’re soft.

  30. “But the Jets don’t need Rodgers right now. They don’t need him for the early stages of the offseason program. They arguably don’t need him for OTAs, not when he: (1) knows the playbook like the back of his giant hand; and (2) probably doesn’t want to show up before training camp, anyway.”
    ———-
It’s not about the QB learning the plays, it’s about the QB learning to work with his receivers. Last year demonstrated that pretty clearly.

    ———-

“Hell, maybe he’ll even gather his future teammates in California or wherever to get acquainted with them, on and off the field, as he moves closer to inevitably becoming a member of the team.”
    ——-

He wouldn’t even do that last year with the WRs he insisted his team acquire.

Remember when Brady went to the Bucs? He showed up to work with the team even when league rules prohibited it, and worked out with other players even when local laws prevented gatherings. Rodgers wouldn’t go near Green Bay or other Packers except under the threat of losing money, but you think he’ll work out with the Jets on his own time when he isn’t even a member of the team?

  31. Packers have one quarterback, maybe two, that don’t suck. Jets have no quarterbacks that don’t suck. Leverage = Packers.

  32. so the packers leverage is to sit pat and will pay Rodgers 60 to hold a clipboard ?

since no one other than the Jets are interested in the 39 year old QB they obviously hold the advantage

  33. At the same time, Rodgers should tell the Packers that, if he’s not traded before the start of training camp, he’ll be showing up, just like Brett Favre did 15 years ago. Rodgers should tell the Packers that he’ll be there, and that he’ll stay there, until he’s traded.
    ==========

I’ve been saying this for weeks! GB cannot risk Rogers showing up, getting hurt and being on the hook for his full guarantees.

But, here’s the untold liability for the Jets – If a deal isn’t done before the draft, what keeps Rodgers from telling the Jets who to pick (unless you take a center and WR, I’m not coming, etc.)?

As you rightly mention above, squeezing GB requires both the Jets and Rodgers to be on the same page. If you’re the Jets, would you trust Rodgers?

  34. Ha!

Rodgers riding the bench! His Mt. Everest ego won’t allow it. And he’ll be acting like a New Yorker telling the New Jersey Jets what to do.

  35. This is exactly what people from the NY/LA/Boston etc. areas simply do not understand about the middle of the country. We are not the least bit impressed or intimidated by that “NY attitude.” The men playing for the Jets come from all over the country; just like the men on every other team. The people in NY bleed red when you punch them in the nose just like the people in Wisconsin or Ohio or wherever. The mindset that NY is going to ” tell them how it’s going to be” is exactly what midwesterners dislike so much about New Yorkers. We fight the wars your ivory towers get us mixed up in. Our kids fight them. And we are just as much American as you are, as well as just as avid of football fans.

  36. The moment Rodgers spoke on the radio show that he would retire rather then return to the Packers if the deal didnt go through, the Packers had zero leverage. The Pack fans have been venting how the pack can wait it out and never understood, so can the Jets and they dont have Rodgers salary and bonus to fret about and they hold all the draft picks too. Packers have nothing. They act like the Jets are despirate for Rodgers when in fact they dont need him if push comes to shove.

  37. The Jets are certainly free to waste their “Super Bowl-ready” roster this year if they desire. At least they can look like tough guys while they do it.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

They are stuck with Rodgers. They owe him big money no matter what. They created their own mess and are in it up to the rafters of Lombardi Stadium in debt. They have no cards at all because Rodgers aint coming back but they still owe him big bucks

  39. The Packers will have to release Rodgers ahead of training camp if they can’t find a suitor for him; for Jordan Love’s sake if nothing else. And in that eventuality, the get no compensation, pay full price for discarding a starting caliber franchise QB, and look like total chumps to their fan base that isn’t sold on Love in the first place.

Jets have all the leverage here. But my question is, why do they want him? In 2009 when the Vikings took Favre, that team was LOADED. All Favre needed to do was hand off to Adrian Peterson and throw for a couple 3rd downs. He did far more than that (much to Brad Childress’ chagrin) but the idea was the Vikings were a sportscar that just needed a competent driver.

Are the Jets that? Above average D, sure. Some weapons on offense, ok. But a player away from serious Superbowl contention? Even adding Rodgers I don’t think too many people would put them as favorites to win the division. So why are the Jets fighting for this one year rental in the first place?

  41. Mike says the Packers don’t have the upper-hand in this, but later says Rodgers and the Jets need to team up against the Packers. If the Packers indeed do not have the upper-hand, why would Rodgers and the Jets need to team up? In fact; the Jets need Rodgers more than more than the Packers do – and every one knows it. And the Packers have the cap space to pay Rodgers his $58M. All the Packers have to do is wait until the Jets increase their offer, or wait until Rodgers retires. That’s not being petty; that’s business. I don’t like the Packers, but to say the do not have the upper-hand in this is absolutely wrong.

  42. Total bull. Look how Rodgers performed last year after skipping OTAs–you seriously think he’ll be fine in a brand new environment without putting the work in? He needs the practice reps as much as anybody.
    =============

Convenient scapegoating. It was a worst case scenario season.

Their 2 best lineman were coming off knee injuries and didn’t hit their stride until midseason.

The young receivers failed miserably. Network TV announcers were calling out that they were running the wrong routes.

LaFleur stubbornly stuck with an ineffective passing game. They were at their best when they were running it.

And Rodgers battled through injuries for the first time in his career. No coincidence he had his worst season.

At 4-8, Rodgers should have been placed on IR. The season was over. They could have auditioned Love.

  43. Nothing is cheap in NYC. Jets front office and fans should know this and pony up to the Pack. We’re waiting, no hurry though.

  44. I agree with Florio. The Jets have the leverage because they don’t need to overpay for Rodgers. They have a QB (though not necessarily a good one). Giving in to ridiculous demands by the Packers is completely unnecessary.

Because they own his rights and already have moved on. That’s how. This is very simple. The Jets are so dumb, they made it known to the world they flew to CA. They were the only team to do this, so they’ve showed all their cards.

What poker player is suggested to show all their cards right at the start of a hand? How does that make sense?

If the Jets had a legit back up plan in place and were possibly negotiating alongside this situation, THAT is how they’d create leverage to force GB to move.

There is not one report about that as of now. Hence, GB has the leverage. They also save a tone of money, close to 20 million if Rodgers is moved on June 1 or after.

  46. Just because we’re midwesterners doesn’t mean you can walk all over us. Packers are not trying to win a super bowl this year, and probably not for the next couple years. They’re rebuilding. Rodgers only has 2 years at most left. Jets are all in and need him to show up and get in good with his receivers (see all of your posts on the topic from last year as reference). Packers have leverage. Good luck NY.

  47. You can’t force them to trade him. Contractually, GB can sit on him and pay him if they want to. If he doesn’t help Jordan Love, he may be violating the terms of his contract.

  48. “The Jets should start negotiations with Lamar Jackson. Even if they don’t want to sign him. It would get the Packers FO off their delusions and realize they could get stuck with Rodgers.”

Yeah, good idea. You don’t want to give up one #1 for Rodgers, so give up two plus who knows how much money for an injury-prone Jackson. Or look even more desperate if the Ravens match the money.

  49. Love the Ben Dreith clip….I was at that game
It is amazing how people think the Packers have any leverage here.

  50. It was reported on this website that Packers cap hit drops from $40M to $16M in 2023 if Rodgers is traded after June 2. Not sure why everyone is freaking out. It is a good business decision to wait until June to finalize the deal. It’s not like he will miss workouts or snaps. Bet the deal goes through on June 3.

  51. I think the entire rest of the NFL wants this all to blow up…

    Leaving both teams in Shambles.

    ============

No chance Rodgers is the backup.

If Rodgers wants to play, he would go scorched earth like Favre did.

  53. “You know, I think we have all the leverage here.”. — Team desperately hoping a 40 year old QB can still throw 5 yards downfield unlike their current roster

  54. since no one other than the Jets are interested in the 39 year old QB they obviously hold the advantage
    ============

I’d bet the Jets aren’t the only ones that have called.

And if this turns into a fight, and the Packers let Rodgers and his agent start making calls, we’re going to hear all about it.

  55. If the Jets pivot to another QB GB is really screwed. They will have to pay a QB they don’t want a 110 million over the next two years. Starting on 2025 the Packers cap will be screwed for 5 years. If the Jets back out the Packers might need to give another team a 1st rounder to take on Rodgers contract like the Rams did with Goff’s less horrible contract or the Browns did giving a 2nd rounder to dump that QB salary they got from Houston.

The cap hit if the stays or goes isn’t that much different.
    —-
That’s crazy. If he is on the roster week 1, the Packers get an additional $60 million in cap hits over the next two years. That’s too funny. Packer fans used to say that Rodgers would retire to bail them out. You have no actual proof of that, and the longer this goes, the more fired to screw over the Packers he will get. If you think $60 million in 2024 and 2025 (and more if he gets injured) is nothing, I don’t know what to say, other than you won’t feel the same way next year.

  57. Both (or all 3) are petty here, but to say that the team that has the asset (Packers) has no leverage is silly. They get hit with a large cap hit whether or not Rodgers plays for them this year. They don’t have to trade Rodgers to the Jets at all if they don’t want to. That’s their leverage.

  58. So they gave Rodgers a contract where he has the leverage last year, and step two of the plan was to play hardball with him the following season? I hope they keep these Machiavellian strategies up for years to come in Packers land.

  59. Mark Murphy and the packers have a double secret pinky swear going on. They’re so smart. 😛

  60. I don’t think anyone expects the Packers to get nothing for Rodgers. But if after a few weeks negotiating the Jets are only willing to trade a 2nd round pick, and the Packers want a 1st and more? That’s just unreasonable.

  61. Part of establishing leverage is making the argument for leverage. There are obviously arguments on both sides and both sides should and will continue making their arguments. Some of it is bluffing. None of us know anything about where the actual leverage is.

And if Rodgers stays that’s a minimum of $60 million in additional cap hits, and $50 million on top of that if he’s on their roster bytes time next year.

Then the Packers have to exercise Jordan Love’s 5th year option by the end of April 2023 and agree to pay him $20 million without him playing any significant games for them, if Rodgers stays. Giving them $60 million in cap devoted to Rodgers and Love in 2024. And then if Rodgers gets injured more guarantees kick in.

The Jets’ leverage comes from Rodgers’ contract, which all you people saying the Packers have the leverage conveniently ignore.

If he’s cut five days into the 2024 league year is the only way to avoid $50 million in further cap damage. So you recommend the Packers take a $60 million cap hit to hold out for a fist round pick rather than what the Jets are offering? That is lunacy.

  67. “The only way the Pack can get any leverage is if there’s a 2nd suitor for Rodgers. Absent that, it’s the Jets with the leverage and everyone should know this.”

A second suitor doesn’t matter. He wants to go to the Jets, so they can trade him to the Jets for whatever the Jets give him, or he can retire and they get nothing.

  68. If the Jets don’t want to pay up for the winner of two of the last three NFL MVP awards, the Packers should keep him. Nothing wrong with having a Hall of Famer on the roster.

  69. Interesting that from past articles the majority said that Rodgers is washed up, going to turn 40 this season. ,may only play one season. Now the majority say he is a HOF, a great QB and worth more than a #1 pick.
Really confusing as an outsider looking in.

  70. The Jets should start figuring out what to offer the Packers for Jordan Love…they have 15 years to prepare…

  71. And all the Jets fans piling on Tua…..Looks good on you now that the Dolphins took Mike White from you after you all said he was the qb of the future.

  72. Mike, you’re a hatred for all things Packers has reached a new level of clouding good sense. The Packers can play with Aaron Rodgers at QB this up coming season, one way or another, that’s the bottom line. The Jets can easily be SOL any way you look at it. If you think big, bad New York can and should lowball or strong arm little Green Bay, you’re in for a big surprise.

  73. “He’s a four-time MVP. He’s worth a first round pick.”

Fine – the Jets give a conditional pick. If Rodgers wins MVP, you get a #1 in 2024. How’s that?

Packers fans: “He’s worth a first round pick! He’s a Hall of Famer!”

Also Packers fans: “I can’t wait until he leaves! Make him ride the bench! We want Jordan Love!”

  74. Hey Mike, the Mafia is dead….no influence anymore. The Packers have the leverage.

  75. There is no urgency for the Jets to acquire a QB with a 1 and done track record in the playoffs.
    ==========

Rodgers has won a game in 7 of 11 trips

He had won a game 5 years in a row prior to the 9ers loss

  76. the Jets should reach out to Lamar Jackson, and do so with fanfare. If it looks like there is a legit chance that they are going a different direction you can bet that the cheese factory will become reasonable, and will be quick about it.

  77. I can’t believe people are taking Rodgers side after the way he has acted the last few years.

Packers cap hit is only $31.6m per year if they don’t trade him.

If the Packers trade him before June 1st then the cap hit for them jumps up to $40.3m

If the Packers trade him post June 1st, their cap hit is only $15.8m.

What is the incentive of saving the Jets $25m by trading Rodgers early. If they want him early then they should give the Packers the 1st rounder seeing how the Packers would be paying the majority of Rodgers salary in 2023 if traded before June 1st.

I’m sure Rodgers and the Jets want the deal done soon so they have an extra $25m to spend on pieces for him and can keep their 1st rounder in the process. Packers are getting fleeced if they trade Rodgers before June 1st without that 1st rounder.

  78. The Packers are gasping their last few breaths of elite air before they sink to the bottom of the NFC North division and breathe the stale cellar air.

  79. I’d rather pay him the 60M to stay if we can’t get a first-rounder for him. Maybe he retires. Maybe they let him play. I won’t be upset with Gute or Murphy for going that route.

  80. The Packers have no other teams to trade with as Rodgers has veto power over any potential deal. The Jets want Rodgers but could technically pivot to Lamar Jackson or go for a less attractive option in Wentz or Ryan.
IMO Rodgers is on the decline, his legs look shot and he couldn’t manage one 300yd game all of last year alone. Rodgers is closer to the 2022 Russel Wilson drop than his 2021 MVP season.
I’m enjoying all this back and forth from the Jets and Packers fans.
GB could have had their haul last year for Rodgers but missed out. For the Jets, even with Rodgers they will still be the 3rd best team in the AFC East.

  81. A second suitor doesn’t matter. He wants to go to the Jets, so they can trade him to the Jets for whatever the Jets give him, or he can retire and they get nothing.
    ============

    The Packers would prefer retirement.

$40,313,570 and it would all be over. No fear of a return trip to Lambeau. No fear of him winning with another team. No fear of paying the balance of the $154,000,000, or whatever the remainder of his contract is.

  82. Why isn’t a 1st rounder fair? Stafford went for a 1st and more and his career is just as much at the at the end as Rodgers. I think a 1st rounder is more than fair for a player that will lift your franchise out of dumpster fire status.

  83. If I’m the Jets, I’m taking a hard pass. Not much left in the tank there and a proven flake.

  84. Rodgers was in a bad division in a bad conference for 15 years. Made it to 1 SB. Now he will have BUF, MIA, NE 6 games a year + the entire AFC KC, CIN, etc. Will be so much fun watching the Jets Rodgers drama as they go 6-11. Because, after all , it’s the Jets

  85. ….. or, there may be another suitor out there. How about the Rams where Matthew Stafford is a big question mark.

  86. Rodgers current contract is going to be guaranteed for $59 mil. How are the Jets with $12 mil cap space trading for him? Spreading out a renegotiated deal? They’ll be paying Rodgers long after he’s retired (he’s 40 in December). The Packers signed this insane deal, Rodgers shows up and plans to play for $59 MILLION in 2023 like a sane person would.
The Jets can offer a 7th round pick to take $59 mil off the Packers books if SOMEHOW they could afford it. The Pack has no choice.

  87. “They can have their dirty, infested, disgusting, overpopulated city”.

You forgot noisy, expensive and rude citizens.

  88. Any Jets trade for any other Tier 1 veteran QB will cost the same… Regardless if Rodgers retires or gets traded the Pack is on the hook for the same amount…and not much less than if they just keep him around. So what…you don’t trade him and you don’t get the Jets second or third round pick? Let him sit…who will be worse off next year…Jets have zero leverage. Pay up or go away….

  89. Rodgers current contract is going to be guaranteed for $59 mil. How are the Jets with $12 mil cap space trading for him?
    ==========

If the Jets trade for Rodgers, the cap hit is $15~mil

The massive option (and future options) start against the 2024 cap.

  90. Rodgers current contract is going to be guaranteed for $59 mil. How are the Jets with $12 mil cap space trading for him?
    =============================
Rodgers cap hit to the Jets this year would be only $15.79 million. They wouldn’t have to free up much…

  91. I can’t believe people are taking Rodgers side after the way he has acted the last few years.

Packers cap hit is only $31.6m per year if they don’t trade him.

    —-

You want Rodgers on your books for $40 million next year and $25 million in 2025? That’s the price of not trading him *and* cutting him by February 10 of 2024. If you don’t cut him by then, another $50 million gets guaranteed. You’re completely lying about the financial impact.

  92. It’s not petty for the Packers to try to get max value for Rodgers. Let’s not forget, the first domino to fall in this situation was the Packers deciding they didn’t want Rodgers. It’s not like Rodgers came to the Packers requesting a trade to his childhood team or something.

After the Packers decided Rodgers was expendable, and after the Packers gave Aaron a green light to talk to the Jets he THEN decided he “intended” to play for the Jets. He didn’t “want” to play for the jets and he wasn’t “excited” to play for the Jets. He “intended” to play for the Jets because he wants his $60M check.

Aaron isn’t being held down in any way by the trade taking a few extra weeks to unfold. There’s a 90% chance Aaron doesn’t show up in NY until July no matter when the trade is completed.

  93. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out there’s been a deal in place for some time, that they’re only waiting for the calendar to roll over to June to announce it.

  94. Wait until Aaron realizes that the Packers don’t want him, and the Jets don’t want him bad enough to cough-up more than a 2nd round pick. Josh Rosen was traded for a 2nd & 5th the next year… so the NY Jets are telling Aaron he’s not even worth what Josh Rosen was? The team with zero quarterbacks definitely does NOT have the leverage unless they’re content to move forward with Zach Wilson in 2023.

  95. If Jets want to flip the bird, Packers keep the HoF QB.

Sure, it hurts their cap but Vegas Odds already expect to finish last in their division (with or without Rodgers). Lett the Jets fans, media, etc slice the Jets owner and GM like a NY deli will be fun to watch.

  96. OK, let the Jets roll with Zach Wilson and Chris Streveler in week one and see the actual New-York character…

  97. Rodgers should just show up and work out at the Packers’ facility.

Steve McNair did the same thing back in 2006ish…and the Titans had to lock him out of the facility.

  98. I wouldn’t give up first rounders for Rodgers, no way after what happened to DEN. DEN lucked out with Manning and they thought they could rinse & repeat. Teams are wising up and using their draft capital for young QBs with promise, not “seasoned” veterans with attitudes and knee problems. AR, LJ, etc.

  99. I agree. Every party in this has outcomes that are preferred and those they’d rather avoid, but only the Packers have an outcome they absolutely don’t want, which is actually two: 1) To be on the hook to pay $60 million to a player they don’t want, and 2) to not get anything in return for Rodgers (if he retires).

There’s exactly one option for the Packers if they want to come out of this with a net positive, and that’s to do a deal with the Jets. Any other way, they lose. And if they want to do a deal, they should just do the deal. They won’t be doing their own team any favors by preventing the team from moving on until right before the season starts, and would be a lot better off drafting with this sorted out (and perhaps having gotten something they can actually use in this draft).

Plus, if they wait until summer, a lot can go wrong. Rodgers can decide he doesn’t want to play after all, or the Jets can luck into some other option that looks easier for them. Now, before the draft, is when the Packers have a captive audience.

  100. In 1974 the Packers gave San Diego a 1st and 2nd; a 1st and 2nd in 1975 along with a 3rd round draft choice for John Hadl who at the time was a back up quarterback for the Chargers.

The Packers should get a 1st and 2nd round choice this year and a 2nd round draft choice next year that could be upgraded to a 1st round selection of the Jets get to the Super Bowl and Rodgers plays in 2024.

Otherwise make Rodgers sit on the bench or retire in disgrace. He is a jerk anyway and would fit well in the New York culture.

  101. The Jets don’t even have to act NY tough. All they need to do is make public their Plan B. (Assuming they have a Plan B, lol.) Send a large group of staff to the QB workouts leading up to the draft. Go ahead and talk to Jackson’s “representative,” and leak a few details. If there is any truth to the Patriots having interest in Jackson (doubtful), contact the Patriots about Mac Jones and leak that info. Bring in Cam Newton for a workout, why not? Make noise that the Jets are exploring other options, and tell the Packers there is a deadline for the trade or you are moving on.

I agree that the Packers prefer not to pay Rodgers $60M to ride the pine next season, however, that doesn’t impact them until September. If the Jets are only offering a 3rd or 4th-round pick it doesn’t make sense to trade Rodgers before the draft, losing out on a 3rd-round pick this year isn’t enough pressure to force them to make the trade before the draft.

Your second point I disagree with. I think the Packers would prefer it if Rodgers retired a Packer and their problem rode off into the sunset, especially if the compensation is low. It gets them off the hot seat completely. Do you think they want to trade Rodgers for a 3rd round pick and then watch him win MVP or go to the SB with NY? Especially if Jordan Love struggles. A scenario like that puts the GM on the hot seat and forces him to answer a lot of really tough questions.

  103. The Jets haven’t won a thing since the 60’s. And beyond that they’ve been mostly cellar dwellers. Yeah, they’re holding all the cards.

Looks like Atlanta is jumping into the bidding war now.
    ……………

Good for them. Rodgers will veto any trade to Atlanta (unless he can be convinced) so good luck with that.

  105. floridapackfan says:
Please, how do the Jets have the upper hand? the Packers do not have to do anything until September. who is to say Jordon love does not have a Trey Lance injury in preseason. Ok Aaron, You are QB #1. If he refuses he gets suspended. and the Jets have whoever they pull in off the street. NY tough guy? Give me a break. The Jets only leverage appears as it gets closer to the start of the season.

    ——————————————————————————————
If the QB in question has basically told his (soon to be former) team to pound sand, his desired new team most definitely has the upper hand. If the Packers want something for this draft, meaning a draft pick that they KNOW the position of, then they are under the gun, not the Jets. If the Packers push this until training camp and the Jets make a trade then, the Packers won’t know if they are getting an early or late round pick for whatever round pick they get. As the saying goes, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. The Packers would be wise to swallow their pride, accept less, open up some salary cap and use the money and picks to improve the rest of their roster. They’re going to need it.

  106. If the Packers want the Aaron Rodgers story and the circus that accompanies it to persist, then they can just bury their heads in the sand. If they want to get this chapter behind them, they know what to do. I’ll bet their newly-anointed QB1 is just loving this… just like AR did when he was elevated. Does anybody think if the Packers had a real owner any of this would transpire? Assuming it’s not Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder, of course.

  107. The Jets have zero leverage. They swung and missed on the #2 pick in the draft at QB, and he is the starter without this trade. All of the top alternate options have signed with other teams. If they don’t get Rodgers, they would need to give up additional resources (picks and/or players) to move up from 13 in the first round, in order to gain a top QB – and there is tremendous risk with that route.

The Packers signed Rodgers to that deal, and they are prepared to force him to show up, or accept his retirement. They don’t need to trade him, and they certainly don’t need to give him away.

Frankly, another poor season and Saleh might be out of a job. Does anybody realize that 11-23 as a head coach usually requires a substantial improvement to make it to year 4.

  108. Word just came out the Woody called Murphy and told him he looked like an older version of Alfred E. (what me worry?) Newman and that he should start to be worried, very worried.
“Sorry Murph, my good bud lamar is on line 2, give you a call later on maybe”.

New contracts prohibit that and thus Rodgers can show up and be a pain in the ass, insist on all the reps and make life a bitch on Love.

Actually, Hadl was with the Rams at the time.

  111. Is Belichick the reason Murphy is ‘sworn to silence’ ??!

  112. Otherwise make Rodgers sit on the bench and eat the packers cap space for this year and next.
The packers certainty can’t force retirement.
    Not too brighr those cheeseheads

  113. NY is 90% rural. You can visit Niagara Falls, Central Park, Lake Placid and Montauk Point and no way you’d think it was the same state. To pigeon hole NY because of ONE city, is ridiculous. People believe TV. TV shows that have fake accents, which is annoying.
Each borough is very different. Staten Island and the Bronx are polar opposites. Boaters on Long Island vs. the off the grid crowd in the Adirondacks are night and day. But the myth perpetuates itself by articles like this.
PS: South Florida? You don’t know who actually runs South Florida? The 85 y/o NY’rs bother you but not the obvious? Anyone who has lived in south Florida (I have) knows exactly what I’m talking about.

  114. I’m not sure what’s more entertaining, the Pack fan rationalization fest above or how much worse Gutekunst’s decision making looks every single year.

  115. Does anybody think if the Packers had a real owner any of this would transpire?
    ===========

Right now, I think you have to let this play out.

Rodgers played pretty well in 2008. 6-10, but they lost a bunch of close games.

If trade Rodgers and they only win 6 or 7 games, does that warrant a house cleaning? Too many variables to justify firing everyone.

.. if you climb in the time machine, yes. Thompson and McCarthy would have had a much shorter shelf life. Definitely.

  116. Packers cap hit is only $31.6m per year if they don’t trade him.
    __
This year. Check what it will be in 2024 and 2025 and 2026 from this year’s money if they don’t trade him

  117. Which scenario would be worse for GB’s GM? 1. Don’t trade Rodgers and get stuck with his cap for a couple of years, or 2. Trade him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick that some would prefer and have Rodgers go on to win a Super Bowl with the Jets? He would be chased out of town if it were the latter. The Jet’s allowed Favre to move on to the Vikings and had 2 more productive years. There is no way GB will let him go for less than a 1.

  118. The Jets have zero leverage. They don’t have a QB and it appears they don’t have a plan-B.

  119. Tough New Yorkers, the people who gave us Donald Trump, the Mets and the Jets, all losers.what else is there to say.

  120. How is it everybody thinks the Packers are idiots? They’re not, no matter how goofy Mark Murphy comes off in interviews. And how is this all the Packers “fault”? There’s two teams negotiating here. The trade will happen eventually, both parties want it. Nobody knows what the hang up is, it could be money, not draft picks. It could be many things, it could be restructuring Rodgers contract.

  121. The delay is because the NYJ are waiting for some ‘wiseguys’ to be released from jail. These ‘wiseguys’ will pay Murphy a visit and make him an offer that he cannot refuse.

  122. Please stop with the Lamar Jackson going to New York Jets “threats.” The Packer brass would laugh that one off in a “New York minute”. In no Universe, Multi-universe, Alternate Dimension or Reality is that going to happen, so just put that one to bed, please. Better yet, do it New York, give him his $300 million guaranteed and cripple your franchise for another decade.

  123. Teams that could use Rodgers for a year or two to serve as a bridge or mentor their young QBs: Panthers, Texans, Cardinals (Murray out most of season), Colts, Ravens (if Colts or Patriots sign Jackson), Falcons, Titans, Dolphins, and 49ers. The Dolphins are the team I would target. With Rodgers I think their Super Bowl odds would be higher than the Jets. Take whatever the Dolphins would be willing to give up, pay as much of his salary as they need. The fact that someone in the Jets division could end up with Rodgers over the Jets would make for some interesting reactions in New York. Keep your 13 pick New York and draft Will Levis. By the time you finally hit on a QB after 50 years, all of your young talent will be past their prime.

  124. It is not the dead cap, its the actual 60 million they would have to pay him. That’s why they have to trade him and have lost their leverage.

  125. Also, Aaron Rodgers is 39 years old. He stays that age a whole year believe it or not and his birthday isn’t until December. So your “40 year old QB” is gonna be “40” for 2 seasons.

  126. GB is already acting like “midwesterners”: allow NYers to think we’re stupid, then get what ww wanted and expected all along. Bonus tip: NEVER think you’re the smartest guy in the room, unless it’s a really small room (something AR and his folk never really got).

  127. Hey Jets: trade for Cousins. We in Minnesota would LOVE to get rid of him, and he’s younger than Rodgers. How about it? Less baggage, less money, and less headaches overall. Cousins to the Jets: let’s do this!

  128. I think what some people fail to realize is, if (hypothetically) the Jets are going to stick to their guns and offer low round useless picks the Packers can talk to other teams about a trade just to stick it to the Jets just for being jerks about it. Then Rodgers can decide if he wants to play for a team he didn’t approve being traded to or retire. The trade with this new team would be structured in such a way that there is no risk for the receiving team, if Rodgers retires they don’t owe any compensation, if Rodgers plays they get a similar pick to what the Jets were offering.

Jets need to realize they shouldn’t play with fire. And I’m not even saying the Packers should demand multiple 1st round picks from the Jets, there is a reasonable trade to be made. Maybe it’s a 2nd and a pick swap of the 13 & 15. But a 4th round pick? LOL that ain’t it. They could get a 4th from anyone.

  129. The Jets could trade for Stafford. They could trade for a number of other QBs to compete with Wilson. The Packers will be left waiting for an injury to trade Aaron. If I am the Jets… the Packers get zero first round picks (unless it’s a conditional for winning the Super Bowl). No matter what, the Jets should draw a line in the sand for a deadline. If the Jets have to pivot, they must do so right away.

  130. How do the Packers not have the upper hand? Rodgers is their asset and the Jets want said asset. The Packers may want to be rid of Rodgers or they may be perfectly fine with their MVP coming back, either way, they have a set asking price and the Jets either need to bite or go another direction.

    ——————————————-

The Packers need the divorce to go through so they can move forward with the second marriage. The ex and new husband are both living in the house. He also has locked up financial assets they need to divide. Jets have the power here. It’s time for the Packers to give in to what the Jets are offering before the draft or the ex isn’t leaving until the Fall.

  131. Full disclosure: Packer stock holder. Love AR and am grateful for all he’s done for us. But he’s decided to move on and that’s fine. It is time, for him and the team.

Reality check: The Packers hold ALL the leverage. AR is under contract with them, and does not have a “No-Trade” clause. While I’d love to see some draft capital for this year, there’s a 15+ million dollar cap benefit if they wait until June 1. And they aren’t on the hook for any of his salary until week 1 of the season, i.e. not until September! So unless they get a serious haul, they’d be stupid NOT to wait.

This obsession with accumulating draft picks is all fine and dandy, but I’d rather have the 15 mil in cap space and pickup some solid veterans to fill some holes.
Unless they’re getting a serious haul, the Packers would be fools to trade him before June 1. And if the Jets have moved on by then, no worries.

Have AR show up for Training camp in his red jersey, have him making warmup throws and doin prep. Wait for someone’s starter gets hurt in camp (Tua is one hard hit away from being done, etc, etc.), and now again we have leverage for AR’s services. If by some miracle late August rolls around and nobody’s looking, find some crap team willing to take him for a late-round draft pick. He doesn’t like it, he can retire.

This IS a business, and the Packers are literally holding ALL the cards.

Don’t get me wrong, in my ideal world, the Jets give up multiple high picks for AR, and the Packers beat the Jets in the Super Bowl. Heck, AR can even take the MVP as a super bowl loser for the first time ever.

Added bonus: months of watching all the NY “tough guys” crying into their beer, ripping apart the Jets management. “The Jets want this. AR wants this. WAAAHHHH. Packers have to do what we want. WAAAAHHH.” (Don’t forget to have lots of popcorn on hand.)

Seriously, the Jets are NOT the only interested party. They’re just the only interested party _right now_. And the Packers should absolutely NOT be in a rush. Either get a ridiculous haul now or wait until after June 1 and see what happens.

Look what teams got for Stafford and Wilson–sure they were younger. But do you think Stan Kroenke gives a darn what he gave up for Stafford after winning his ring, even after the terrible season they had immediately after? Do you think he’d have given that up for AR if he thought that’s what would’ve taken his team to the next level? If you have a team that you think is only a QB away from serious Super Bowl contender, why wouldn’t you give up a haul?

So Packers: please, please, do NOT fold when you are literally holding all the cards.

  132. It is not the dead cap, its the actual 60 million they would have to pay him. That’s why they have to trade him and have lost their leverage.
    =========================================================

They don’t “have” to do anything, they can afford to pay him and make him sit at home if they want to. Obviously they’d rather not, but it doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t. They CAN trade him whenever they want to, June 3, July 3, August 3, September 3, October 3, you following me here? Injuries happen to other teams once the season starts, Jordan Love could get injured. The possibilities are actually many and varied. This idea that the Jets have them over a barrel is a farce and a laughable one at that.

  133. Wow – that’s alot of assumptions. Why anyone thinks the Packers are doing anything other than negotiating to get the best value for their hall of fame quarterback they can get is beyond me. Complaining about people buying into a media driven story that the Packers have the upper hand is a little ironic here. This is not personal, its just business as usual.

  134. The reality is both the Packers and Jets are both professional organizations acting in their own best self interests. they will eventually find a middle ground.
The only thing petty and personal is the tone of the article.

  135. Sure and he can watch Love from the bench.

I’d call Rodger’s bluff. He has 2-year shelf life and I don’t think he wants to end his prolific career that way, along with possibility for another SB run.

  136. So lets see. If the Jets play hardball and Green Bay takes its QB and goes home, who’s going to be the Jets QB? A short list – Zack Wilson (lol), Lamar Jackson (even bigger lol), Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater, Mason Rudolph, Carson Wentz, and it kinda trails off after that.

I wonder how the Jets fan base and the NY media will feel about starting Carson Wentz for a year. A year, mind you, with a team that is on the rise and only needs that one piece to move to the next level.

People think the Jets have the leverage. They have some. But they also have a glaring need at the most important position, a need they have put out into the media, along with the expectations that come along with it. GB would really like to be rid of Rodgers and his money, of course, but they already have a QB they are ready to move on with. The Jets do not.

  137. It’s time for the Jets to go after Lamar. He might cost less than Rodgers over the next two years. The issue with Lamar is that he’ll miss games—that gives Wilson some game reps (nice). That would also weaken a conference foe. I can’t imagine Hackett’s offense would suffice, though. Maybe, they can make all of the audibles be RPO’s and Lamar can frequently audible into an RPO.

  138. Also, here’s another way to look at it.
What does GB want re AR:
    1) Find an acceptable landing place for their soon-to-be former QB who has diminished skills and is perhaps more than a bit long in the tooth and receive fair value for him;
    2) Have the best possible setting and environment for the QB they believe is their QB of the future;
    3) Unload litt QB who has shown, in recent years, no desire to work extra time with promising young talent (in contrast to young QB who is already working with young offensive weapons in CA); and
    4) Clear up some cap space by getting rid of litt QB’s huge guaranteed contract.

What do NYJ want re AR:
    1) Mentor high draft pick QB who may very well be a bust;
    2) Fit in with and work with young team; and
    3) Win SB.

Who do you think is more likely to get their “wants” fulfilled?

  139. Packer fans are outta their league. They just don’t have that tough mentality like the Jersey boys. Hard to take anyone seriously with a foam cheese slice on their heads. Jets stand pat even asking for Bak and the packers number one.

  140. Jets should schedule a visit with Lamar Jackson and Matthew Stafford. Check out the other options available.

Jets are in talks with the Vikings to get Kirk Cousins

    /////////////////////

Rodgers to the Jets. Jets trade Rodgers to the Vikings for Cousins. All packer trolls heads explode.

  142. Green Bay has no reason to lower their demands. The worse thing they can have happen is for Gollum to retire. They’ve already made their bed with Love and are willing to proceed with him regardless. If they have to carry the dead corpse money of Gollum, then the team will just phone it in for a season and get a high draft pick to replace both Gollum and Love. Pound sand, New York.

  143. It wasn’t that long ago the Packers were all-in including compensation with Rodgers. If they have to they could again, albeit not for long. What’s stopping them from trading during the season when all of a sudden four promising teams need quarterback help? They can wait, the Jets shouldn’t.

  144. Who has the upper hand? What are the jets comparable options? None. The packers already have Rodgers bonus figured into their cap. They can force both Rodgers and the jets hand. The packers have the upper hand. They have the least to lose out of the 3 parties……… Other than cap space and money. From the lack of deals made by the pack, I’m guessing they’re content on how this plays out no matter what. The jets don’t give them what they want, let Rodgers retire or show up. If he shows up, it’s a learning year for Love with no team expectations…..

  145. A 2023 draft pick will be involved, so they have until draft day to get a deal done. No reason to do anything now if your Green Bay, so they will hold out in the case something changes between now and then.

  146. So, in other words, the Jets should tell Murphy and the Packers to sh#t or get off the pot

Out of their league? Right, how could they compete with the New York Jets and their rich wonderful football tradition? The Packers have 13 world championships (4 of them Super Bowls)….the Jets have that wonderful, flukey Joe Namath story from like 60 years ago….yes, we’re out of our league. Teach us Jets! Teach us that great Jets way.

Since 1969- Super Bowl wins. Packers 2 Jets 1. That’s one heck of a tradition.🤣

  149. Explain to me WHY the Jets even want an aging QB that will be one and done. Let the Packers keep him.

  150. I have a feeling the Jets are simply being given time to get their ducks in a row, that’s it.

  151. The Packers aren’t fools. The Jets can talk as tough as they want. They’re not getting Rodgers without giving up that first round pick.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Here’s another one; Since 1991 the Packers have had two different starting quarterbacks. The Jets have had thirty-four. That’s one heck of a tradition.

  153. I hear that Cam Newton looked good the other day. Cheap, flashy, snappy dresser, thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread. Sounds perfect for NYJ!!

  154. I wouldn’t want A.R. for all of that money and I wouldn’t want a short term qb if I were the Jets. A.R. isn’t the division winning lose in the first round qb he used to be.

  155. Right now his value is whatever the Jets are offering. There are no other bidders.

Unless, the packers are interested in keeping him and if that’s the case, they’ve jacked this whole thing up themselves.

  156. It’s Rodgers that holds all the cards….I’m sure he signed his last contract saying the Packers need his approval to a trade . He could just say now, in a cryptic way , that he won’t approve any trade and will take the 60 million from the Packers. That will get GB to get off their hinny.

  157. Here’s another one; Since 1991 the Packers have had two different starting quarterbacks. The Jets have had thirty-four. That’s one heck of a tradition.

Don Majkowski, Matt Flynn, Scott Tolzien, Seneca Wallace and Brett Hundley might have something to say about that..

As someone who has lived in NY, I can tell you that NO ONE Likes New Yorkers. They are rude, obnoxious, entitled, ill-mannered, and angry people who just want to mug non-NYers. They can have their dirty, infested, disgusting, overpopulated city.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As a person from Philly, I thought what you said above was true, until I met several folks over the years from NYC and the rest of the state. While true for some, and not for others, I gotta say… Florio is right, NY holds the cards here. Can’t believe I’m saying this (Philly inferiority complex to NYC and all still intact), but I’m with NY on this one. The Jets need to give the ‘State Bird” it’s maiden flight of spring here. The only problem that I see is that Rogers, probably isn’t Rogers anymore, motivation or not. JMHO.

Do you split hairs for a living? Using your math, the Jets have had thirty-nine. Feel better?

  160. You’re not all hooked up Mike. GB can completely ruin the little sister of New York’s supposed leverage as you call anytime they want. Leak a rumor about shopping J-Lo. Leak a rumor about another team asking about 12. More likely that GB would call Aarons bluff and watch him walk into retirement than have the Jets not cave and give up pick 13.

I figured 34 accounted for injuries and the like.

I wasn’t about to waste life fact checking Jets QBs.

  162. The Jets have ZERO leverage. It doesn’t matter if the Packers end up paying Rodgers’ huge salary, they ARE NOT using the money they’d save on trying to rebuild or sign anyone via free agency this year anyways, so it’s a moot point. The Packers have their future star QB and will sit Rodgers if it comes down to it, the Jets have a couple of college and XFL QB’s who they are desperately trying to find a replacement for. We get it, Mike Florio is a Vikings fan and will do anything he can to attempt to slight Green Bay, but when it comes to reality and facts, the Jets better be willing to give up a first-rounder and more or they can have fun with Zach Wilson and Mike White.

  163. What a difference a year, and a good GM makes. Last year the Seahawks received two 1st round, two second round, a fifth round pick, and 3 players for Wilson.

Fast forward to the present and Green Bay is desperately trying to receive one 1st and a conditional pick for Rodgers, who the Broncos tried to trade for before settling on Wilson…

  164. Hahaha – you Packer fans still don’t understand.

If Rodgers is *released* prior to June 1, his cap hit for 2023 is…wait for it…$99 million.

If he is *released* after June 1, then his cap hit for 2023 is only…wait for it…$75 million.

You cannot release him. It’s hilarious that you all think that you can.

  165. I think the Jets and their are acting like New Yorkers. It’s that ugly entitlement mentality.

    Hahaha – INCORRECT

IF they cut him after June 1 (which, there is almost zero chance) the hit is $31mil for 2023, and $68~mil for 2024.

If you’re going to try to insult people, its best to have your facts strait.

The only way the Pack can get any leverage is if there’s a 2nd suitor for Rodgers. Absent that, it’s the Jets with the leverage and everyone should know this.////////////////////////////

That doesn’t fully do it as all 31 other teams know from Murphy that the packers don’t want Rodgers back. And the packers don’t want to be on the hook for $59M for Rodgers & $20M for Love. They have very little leverage here.

Only Rodgers doesn’t have a no trade clause so his approval isn’t necessary. And Rodgers isn’t walking away from $59M by retiring so he has no hand.

Breaking News: A Vikings fan thinking the Packers have no leverage//////////////////////////////

Rent free and the packers leverage is limited at best. I would rather be in the Jets shoes. Worse case scenario they pick up a QB late and have a bad season. And then try to draft Calleb Williams. The packers don’t make a deal they have $79M in 2 QB’s.
