Final rule proposals do not include prohibition on pushing ballcarrier

The rugby maul play will likely remain in place for 2023, and perhaps beyond.

The full set of proposed rule changes for next week’s annual meetings — from teams and from the Competition Committee — do not include a rule prohibiting teammates from pushing the ball carrier. Unless the owners do it on their own (and at least 24 in all agree with the move), the play will continue to fair game.

Although the rule against pushing the ballcarrier was scrapped in 2006, teams did not begin using it strategically on a widespread basis until this season. The Eagles used it on numerous occasions in Super Bowl LVII.

New Broncos coach Sean Payton has vowed to use the tactic aggressively, if the rule remains on the books.

It’s an effective tool, if the quarterback is willing and able to be squished between offensive linemen and the players who push him forward. Teams that don’t have a quarterback who can survive such an assignment can use another player for the formation, whether a Taysom Hill-type quarterback or a player who usually plays a different position.

But while it works, it’s not much to look at. For a league that is so obsessed with appearances, it’s strange that it would welcome a play that is less artistry than it is tug of war.

  1. Guaranteed most teams will have that in their playbook next year. When you think about it, such a simple play, amazing it took 16 years for someone to do something with it.

  2. Sean Peyton is on record saying that if it’s not banned, then he’ll run it every down. Well let’s start the insanity!

  3. I enjoy the play. We haven’t seen a QB get hurt running this, in spite of the Media’s gnashing of teeth and rending of garments. A short yardage play will never be pretty. Deal with it.

  4. I guess The Fridge retired too soon. Should lead to plenty of arguments about where the ball gets spotted.

  5. And like every other unstoppable play or unstoppable offense in NFL history, teams will learn how to stop it before you know it.

  6. Not a fan of Sumo football. Games should be won by players and teams with blocking, running, and play calling skills.

  7. You know it’s not a given play every time. The birds perfected it last year with one of the best O Lines and centers to ever play. Not all teams have a future hall of famer all pro baseball n the middle to do this. That and Jalen hurts is no slouch either…pushing him or not – the guy squats 600lbs! All that said when the eagles tied this play twice with GM it didn’t work at all. And if the field conditions suck it doesn’t work either. So it’s not a given play unless – like every other football play – it’s executed well with the correct personnel.

  8. And that’s one of the ones that would be better than most of the goofy stuff they’ve come up with. Smdh…

  9. If you actually study the play, there is artistry involved. It’s more akin to a beefy ballet than a street scrum. The Eagles practice this play every week. The use of leverage, how low the lineman get, etc, is much more involved and detailed than you’re giving credit

  10. The play is called Weekend at Bernie’s. Enjoy it while you can. It won’t last beyond 2023. Somebody will get seriously injured and that will be the end of it. This rule applies to the open field as well. Unlike how it’s described here, players aren’t going to have the choice to allow it. Their teammates at any point in time can take control of their body. This ends predictably.

  11. I think it’s a beautiful play.

But even if it isn’t, there are plenty of plays less aesthetically pleasing. Like punts. Often used in the same situation.

If you run the same one yard sneak without the push, does that make it more pretty a play for you? Because no one suggests outlawing that.

The runner should have to advance himself without any assistance from other players

Runners always have assistance from other players. Its called blocking.

Amazingly it will take another 13 years to remove it from play ie. tuck rule

  14. It gives teams with slappy QBs an advantage, therefore it’s good for the parity of the game. Other than Josh Allen no team is gonna put a 540 million QB in tbe play, which gives those teams an opportunity to create a slight advantage.

  15. push, legal; pull illegal. horsecollar, illegal; hop-drop, legal. football is being run by lawyers who are ruining the game

  16. It will be interesting to see how many other teams try this next season. My guess is that a lot of them won’t put the time and effort into practicing it, and even if they do, they might not be good at it. It’s not as easy as it looks. The Eagles have a great Offensive Line and a young QB who can squat 400 lbs. Looking forward to Sean Payton trying and failing with 34 year-old Russell Wilson.

This is exactly the problem! It is a speculation where the ball lands as it can’t be seen in a scrum and moreover subjective as to when the Refs blows the whistle for stopped forward progress. Ridiculous! Let’s not give the Zebras make more opinionated options!
