Will the Jets make a run at Odell Beckham, Jr.?

There’s no shortage of interest in receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. There’s a definite shortage of interest when it comes to Beckham’s financial expectations.

The Jets were one of the 12 teams that attended his workout two weeks ago. Last week, future Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, in downplaying characterizations of a “wish list” as a ransom note, made it clear on Pat McAfee’s show that Rodgers is interested in playing with OBJ.

So will the Jets make a move? Connor Hughes of SNY recently tweeted that the Jets’ interest in Beckham is “very real.” (Not to get philosophical here, but if it’s “real” it’s necessarily “very real” and also “extremely real” and even “super duper extremely seriously real.”)

And it is real. That’s a given at this point.

The challenge continues to be making OBJ’s expectation match New York’s super duper extremely seriously real budget. He has bristled at playing for only $4 million. He wants $20 million per year. (He has denied it, but he also has supplied it.)

As previously explained, why wouldn’t he want $20 million per year? The 15 highest-paid receivers are at or above $20 million per year. Surely, OBJ regards his skills as comparable to the players at or near the fringes of the top 10.

Then there’s the question of what his role would be with the Jets. They have Garrett Wilson, who was the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year. They have Allen Lazard, to whom they gave a significant free-agent contract. They’ve just added Mecole Hardman. Where would OBJ fit?

His best approach continues to be finding a spot where he can do a one-year deal, enhance his base salary with significant incentives, have a strong season, and hit the market again next year.

  1. He will likely need to take a prove it contract, the guy hasn’t performed like a top 10 receiver in years.

  2. OH Woody you! You little devil! Get out that popcorn in NY under the lights and pretend you’ve got a good team close to winning again.

Make the Jets gain attention again! Yay!

  3. First issue he is a locker room cancer so any new coach or coach/GM on the hot seat (Salah and Douglas will be top of the list since they have yet to prove they are capable winners, make the playoffs, in the NFL) doesn’t want to have to deal with that, basically his talent level no longer supersedes his immaturity. Second a coach with a younger QB won’t want that cancer ruining their still learning QB. Third, if he was worth anything based on his “workout” someone would have already signed him so as a collective the GMs have decided he is no longer talented enough to warrant anything more than near league minimum one or two year, little guaranteed contract. The press/pundits are the only ones that anointed him as “very” talented based on one catch with a very sticky glove.

  4. Joe D. will only sign OBJ on an affordable deal, 2 years, $22m. And has the patience to wait OBJ out especially with no other suiters, $$ drops after the draft.

  5. If Odell Beckham is really intent on resurrecting his career, why would he choose a team that’ll have the likes of Zach Wilson dishing him the football?

  6. With Rodgers and Beckham Jr. as suitors, the Jets need to ask themselves whether there will be room for 3 of them in that marriage.

  7. I like my WR to not have had to ACL injuries and declining abilities for anywhere even remotely near what this guy wants…no TY….

  8. Well, Beckham is on Mr. Rodgers wish list. I just can’t see the Jets giving him the money that he’s seeking. That doesn’t mean that they won’t…they are the Jets, after all.

  9. Hello……..the problem is not the lack of interest. The problem is his ridiculous asking price.

  10. Here’s another insider tip…Odell is WASHED. Do you REALLY think a WR of his magnitude would remain unsigned if he was not? Have you paid any attention to the WR market..at all? This is NOT about money, this is about his perceived ability or lack there of to perform

  11. No, they wont hes washed and has been before he was injured this last time. For sure he’s NOT the same guy.

  12. Make sure to cough up a 1st rounder, or two seconds if you want him to play with AR12!

  13. Of course they will make a run because Rodgers wants him on the team. Doesn’t mean OBJ will accept the money that the Jets are willing to pay. It certainly won’t be 10+ mill a year.

Maybe a 1 year deal could make the money higher.

  14. If they sign OBJ they should make a documentary on what that locker room would be like with him and His Darkness(Rodgers) around. Maybe bring back Rex Ryan as a consultant just to have the trifecta of Ringling Brothers circus.

  15. If you’re Joe Douglas, do you just walk away?

The meddling owner is going to fire you the train derails. Why not get a jump on your next job?!

  16. Beckham and Rodgers are respectable players from the past. High name recognition but productive days are behind them. A division with Von Miller and Matthew Judon would not be good for Rodgers.

  17. Nobody is “making a run” at him any more. They may offer him a contract like you do other #3 receivers but the days of wining and dining him, begging him to join your team, are way in the rearview mirror.

  18. His last productive year was 2016. He MIGHT have more left in the tank, but he’ll need to PROVE IT. I bet the Titans would give OBJ 8 to 10 million for one year.

  19. I hope they do and give him an insane amount of money only to trade/cut him the following season

  20. Why go and compete with OROY Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman and the rest of Rodgers’ Cronies for touches when you can go to KC and be the true WR1, sharing touches with mainly Kelce in the passing game? If you really want to show you’re “The Man”, go somewhere and be the man, Odell. You get to catch passes from the greatest QB who will ever play the game by the time he’s done playing, and benefit from coverage having to account for Kelce. It should not even be a question. I can’t figure out for the life of me why WR1s across the league aren’t fighting to get to KC.

    ________

I always find it so amusing that the people who have no clue about Aaron Rodgers constantly try and paint him as some kind of locker room cancer.
Meanwhile, dozens of teammates, past and present, have praised Rodgers for his on the field exploits and his leadership off it.
Several retired Packers, over the years, have singled out Aaron for making them better professional players and even Christian Watson recently talked about his initial disappointment in Rodgers possible departure saying he helped him in becoming a better receiver and more importantly a better man.
It may be weird, but I’ll take the word of the people that have shared the locker room with Rodgers than those who have not. 😉

  22. His last 1000 yard season and 16 games played was 2019. That is a long time since he has solid production. Still only had 4 td’s but whatever. I think it would be fair to offer him around the same annual as a Robert Woods got but in a one year deal not 2 years at 7.5. If you want to tie some incentives I don’t think that would be a dealbreaker. At this point, he’s too much of a risk and is leveraging off accomplishments from years ago.

  23. People automatically assume the Rodgers thing is a done deal. Until the Jets up their offer to something more reasonable (a first round pick and a quality starter would be fair), Rodgers is staying in GB.

  24. New book coming out:
HOW TO SET A FRANCHISE BACK 10 YEARS – The Story of OBJ

Co-Authored by the NY Giants and Cleveland Browns

  25. You have to admit that if this does happen, Rodgers and OBJ on the same team would be “must see” TV.

  26. This dude is all hype !! Why does he even get the attention?? He has not had more then 350 yards since he was with the Giants. Maybe once with Browns. Otherwise the most overrated and overhyped WR ever. All those one handed catches are exactly what a WR coach or offensive coordinator does NOT want to see. They want to see catching the ball with both hands. It isn’t Ringling Brothers circus, it’s the NFL.

  27. So Aaron wants the same deal Tampa gave Brady. Ton of money. A team that would win a SB without me.

  28. I don’t understand all the hype about OBJ … he is 31 with 2 ACL surgery’s under his belt. Plus he is a head case and a me me me guy. Also. And last played in 2021. I must be missing something here.

  29. “It may be weird, but I’ll take the word of the people that have shared the locker room with Rodgers than those who have not. 😉”

Perhaps true, but if what you say is true, why are the Packers willing to trade him? What about the multitude of reports that coaches and managers are “done with him?” You can also look at his behavior that led to Mike McCarthy’s exit. There are many QB’s in this league(Mahomes is one) who are team first guys rather than ‘me first’ guys which appears to be AR’s most recent emphasis.

  30. So Aaron wants the same deal Tampa gave Brady.
    ==========

Brady did it right. He earned his way to free agency. He got to pick his spot. His new team didn’t have to give away assets to bring him in.

Those facts are lost on Rodgers and Wilson.

  31. You can also look at his behavior that led to Mike McCarthy’s exit.
    ===========

McCarthy deserves credit for developing Rodgers. Rodgers has credited him publicly for that. That doesn’t make McCarthy a great coach.

Look at his Playoff losses. One disaster after another.

He should have been fired after the 2014 NFCC Game.

  32. I’m really interested in how so many people know he’s a “locker room cancer”. He seems to be well liked and respected by all of the players in the league. I don’t know if he causes dissension, and friction in the locker room. It’s all of the stuff that happens off the field that gives one pause.

  33. “respectable players from the past” really?

1st off, rodgers is way more then a respectable player of the past, is your idea of the past 2 seasons ago when he won his 2nd mvp in 2 yrs. is that the past, come on.

2nd, odell was a respectable(barely) player for like 2 seasons, now he is just a washed up twice torn acl old diva wr. so please dont compare the 2 players. also, 1 of them is a cancer to any team he is on the other is a leader who is respected by guys who have played with him. I can never once remember a locker room issue involving rodgers, all you hear about him is praise from teammates, cant say the same about the other guy.

  34. Hardman and Lazard are no more than 3rd or 4th receivers. I don’t think their presence prohibits signing OBJ other than soaking up salary.

Hype? Or you just make stuff up? In the 3 years he’s played since leaving the giants he went over your random 350 number 2 of those 3 seasons and the other yr he had almost 350 in 7 games.

  36. OBJ is only a cancer when hes on a bad team with a bad quarterback, his dad was the one who called out Baker for sucking and look at that guy now.. Him with Rodgers he only has himself to blame if he doesn’t get the production he wants and Rodgers wants him for a reason. I could see him taking a pay cut to jump on the train or going to the biggest deal offered bc he took quite a hit on his crypto paycheck from the rams lol.

  37. I’m really interested in how so many people know he’s a “locker room cancer”
    ============

I understand how people can’t stand his on-field demeanor. Its hard to watch, and it seems to have gotten worse at this point of his career.

But its hard to find Packers that have said bad things about him. The only 2 I can think of had an axe to grind against the team for the way their careers ended.

  38. If A-Rod reads these post, and i think he does, here is something to think about! If OBJ is on his wish list and he becomes a Jet, after ever TD catch he gets from A-Rod, He will be the Center of Attention. He will Command the locker room after the game and A-Rod will be sitting in the corner all by his lonesome self…..

“He had almost 350 in 7 games”. That comes out to less than 50 yards per game. Yeah….that translates into HYPE.

Well I guess he stays in Green Bay for the next two seasons. Jets will be fine without him. Stafford can win just as many with the Jets.
