Devin McCourty still doesn’t know why Bill Belichick benched Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl

It’s one of the NFL’s greatest mysteries: Why did the Patriots bench cornerback Malcolm Butler for Super Bowl LII, and keep him on the sideline for the entire game while Eagles backup quarterback Nick Foles picked apart their secondary?

Among those who still can’t answer is one of the members of that secondary, Devin McCourty, who said on Chris Long’s Green Light podcast that he still wonders why Bill Belichick kept a healthy Butler on the bench for the whole game.

McCourty said when he heard Butler plans to write a book about his experiences, he told another player in that Patriots’ secondary, Stephon Gilmore, that he wanted to read it. Gilmore replied that he too is still wondering why Butler didn’t play a single snap on defense in that Super Bowl.

To this day, I still don’t know the exact reason why he didn’t play,” McCourty told Long, via MassLive.com. “When I saw he was coming out with a book and a documentary, I was like, ‘I can’t wait to read that.’ Gilly actually texted me and was like, ‘I’m going to buy this book ASAP.’”

Various reports have surfaced over the years that Butler had somehow misbehaved to draw Belichick’s ire, including a report of a shouting match with then-Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia during Super Bowl week, but that has never been confirmed by Butler, Belichick or Patricia, and it’s worth noting that Belichick did not suspend Butler and in fact Butler did play one snap of special teams in the Super Bowl.

It’s also worth noting that although Butler left New England in free agency after that Super Bowl, he re-signed with the Patriots in 2022 and spent five months on their roster during the offseason, so Belichick wasn’t totally opposed to having Butler on his team again. (Patricia was a Patriots assistant when Butler was in New England all offseason and there were no reports of any animosity between the two of them. There were also reports that the Lions considered signing Butler when Patricia was their head coach.)

Butler’s benching is a mystery that Belichick may be the only one who can solve, and Belichick is famously tight-lipped when he doesn’t want to give away information, so we may never know. But Eagles fans will always celebrate, as the Patriots’ secondary played its worst game of the season while Butler stood on the sideline and watched the Eagles win the championship.

  1. The SB is over, stop dredging up the past like this. It seems like McCourty is dying for attention. Also, BB is NOT accountable to McCourty, Butler, or the media for his decisions.

  2. Belichick is a very vindictive person if he placed personal animosity over the team’s best interests.

  3. Because Bill put his own ego ahead of the team in the biggest game of the year. Bill showed his true colors

  4. This is the game when Brady fumbled the ball with 2:03 seconds left in the 4th quarter…to blame the loss on Malcolm Butler’s benching is a complete fabrication.

  5. I like McCourty. He has been very informative and transparent about things that happened while he was playing. It is always nice to get the inside perspective from someone who played so recently.

  6. Patriots fan here. Belichick would rather lose games than show a crack in his tiresome “I don’t have to explain anything to anyone” act, which is one of the main reasons the game has passed him by.

  7. Hubris cost the Patriots another ring and even worse; it gave Philly their first.

  8. I think somehow Butler ran afoul of Bill’s ego and he was going to teach him a lesson.

  9. God this guy doesn’t shut up! Didn’t like him as a player, hate him as a talking head.

Yes……at the expense of the entire team, organization and fans

Kraft should have fired BB before they even made it to the plane

  11. The guys out there couldn’t stop Philly. Belichick watched the whole game without saying to himself, “we have to try something different and put another guy out on the field.” This wasn’t a mistake like calling one bad play. This is something he had ALL GAME to correct. Belichick gambled on his foolish arrogance and lost.

  12. For fans of ANY other teams, the coach would be crucified.

But most Patriots fans don’t care, because they are fans of the garbage.

Well, that was one reason. He also either had the flu or faked that he had it. That’s never been confirmed. It’s suspicious he is the only one on the whole team who had the flu and took a separate flight out.

So, it wasn’t Devin who said “he knows why he wasn’t playing”. My guess is that it was Pat Chung who said that. Maybe Harmon. Someone said it. It was a veteran. And, it’s clearly known.

Surprised McCourty said this during retirement week. Bad look to feign ignorance. He knows.

Butler got benched for a variety of reasons and it’s not why they lost the game. Philly got 2 illegal TDs and Brady dropped a wide open pass and then fumbled on the last drive to lose the game.

It’s an offensive league and NEs offense had the ball last and choked again like it did vs the Giants.

The team that has the ball last, wins.

  14. If I were BB, after reading this article I would publish comments made by McCourty, that he (McCourty) wouldn’t want to be made public, during his playing days. McCourty isn’t the only one who can advance his own agenda, this goes both ways.

  15. We need an excuse, any excuse, to cork the champagne and get toasted, so raise your glasses and stop complaining. Signed ’72 Dolphins.

  16. I just love all this speculation by people with absolutely no clue.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The ones who should care most don’t care, because they love Belichick the garbage, so the garbage doesn’t have to explain, hence the speculation.

  17. Belichick turned his back on the entire organization that day. The fans as well. He gave the Eagles that win. He’s hardheaded.

  18. With the game on the line, Brady fumbled the ball…Patriots fans, that’s the reason your team lost. Regardless of whether Butler played or not, Brady had a chance to win it and fumbled the game away instead.

  19. Remember when Vince Lombardi did stuff like that? Shula? Gibbs? Walsh? Nope, me either.

    Exactly.

It’s like adults think it’s cool for other adults to act like children and not be held accountable with anything.

I mean, look at the world right now. Millennials have no idea the damage they’ve done. As if the Boomers’ destruction isn’t enough, their 5th place trophy kids are somehow better?

Everyone is to be held accountable. You got nothing if you don’t have accountability.

The Pats entire success was built on it.

  22. Belichick’s ego and arrogance got the best of him and cost the Patriots a SB. Butler played most snaps all season and Belichick suddenly decides to bench him in the SB? Because Butler talked back to him? Because he had a bad practice? Because he was out late one night? For Belichick to embarrass Butler in the SB like that was inexcusable. One of his worst moments.

  23. With the game on the line, Brady fumbled the ball…Patriots fans, that’s the reason your team lost. Regardless of whether Butler played or not, Brady had a chance to win it and fumbled the game away instead.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Eagles had the best edge rush in the league. Do you know why it was completely ineffective?

Because Brady stayed close to his O-line. Get the picture?

  24. Why don’t you ask them why they couldn’t stop a career 3rd stringer. He lit them up.

  25. With the game on the line, Brady fumbled the ball…Patriots fans, that’s the reason your team lost. Regardless of whether Butler played or not, Brady had a chance to win it and fumbled the game away instead.

Feeding the ogre here, but when a 300lb man forcibly knocks something out of your hand, that’s not the same as dropping it.

  26. Because…BB knew that Butler wouldn’t follow the script therefore it would ruin Foles’ chance to suck for the Jags and the Bears and then the Colts. Right? The NFL is rigged right? This is called sarcasm for the uneducated. Hashtag conspiracy theory

I wish my team could run an illegal play and it be considered legal on that day in a SB just like it’d be great to see an incompletion be called a completion in the end zone in a SB.

I am sure NE would have never lost a SB if that had happened. lol

    Goodell works hard. Very hard.

  29. Fine line between “stern leader” and “authoritarian who puts his personal feelings ahead of the team.” Bill slipped over that line and likely cost them the Super Bowl.

  30. He was sick, he missed the team flight, he had a bad year, and he had a bad attitude that week. BB is about team. He is not about sitting good healthy players with their heads on straight. This is some high level tin foil conspiracy stuff to still be worrying about it 8 years later.

Or maybe Butler gets torched too, we don’t know. I will say if Butler could have made 1 play to stop the 4th and 5 conversion late in the game that could changed the game.

Cook playing like a moron, Brady’s dropped reception, sack fumble, are all reasons the game was lost as well. It wasn’t just the defense and it wasn’t just one position on the defense.

  32. Up there with not running Marshawn Lynch as one of the dumbest moves in sports history

  33. Come on, everyone knows New England lost that game because of Roger Goodell cheating them and the effects of COVID, so that Super Bowl doesn’t count.

  39. Can’t believe after these years there are STILL Patriots fans defending Belichick. None on the scrubs Belichick put in the backfield could get a stop — Brady was on fire and just needed Philly to punt. These Koolaid-drinkers say it didn’t matter that Belichick kept one of his best defensive backs on the sideline. Everyone wanted Butler to play. Everyone (except Philly fans) wanted Belichick to just try to do everything he could to win the game. He did not do that, and it’s unforgivable. I used to defend him and his insufferable attitude, too…. until that day.

  40. dryzzt23 says: “The SB is over, stop dredging up the past like this. It seems like McCourty is dying for attention.”

He was in a podcast being asked a question so how is this “dying for attention”? It’s not like he went on twitter blurping around. The guy just retired and it’s not unreasonable for interviewers to ask about highlights or lowlights and retrospective questions. Player has no control over the media quoting them from podcasts and interviews.

  41. Its simple. With a backup QB for the Eagles, the Pats were helping Vegas clean up from betting. Vegas allowed the Patriots to win the next year.

  42. You act like Butler was the greatest cornerback ever and that if he was on the field Foles would have only thrown his way for incompletions/interceptions. Get real!

It’s an offensive league and NEs offense had the ball last and choked again like it did vs the Giants.

You true-blue defenders of the Patriots faith and everything BB are totally blind. All Brady did was throw for 505 yards and 3 TDs (no INTs) in that Super Bowl game. Amendola, Hogan and Gronk were all well over 100 yards receiving. Meanwhile the Pats defense couldn’t stop back-up Nick Foles as he threw for 375 yards. You remember Nick Foles, the QB who has a grand total of 13 300 yard games in his whole 12 year career. I like Nick Foles as a person, but he has literally averaged ~ one 300 yard game per year.
But you’re still pouting because Brady “betrayed” you, like he wasn’t allowed free will to join another team after 20 years with the club. Get over it. You had the privilege to enjoy the best QB of all time lead your team to an unparalleled dynasty – can’t you just be happy?
As for why Butler wasn’t allowed to play, I suspect butler broke a rule and Belichick decided to make an example of him. Belichick is old school, things need to be done a certain way. A better strategy might have been to not allow Butler to start, but then insert him after it became clear NE’s defense was going to have problems. I don’t believe this had anything to do with a flu or anything else medical. If it did, there would have been no problem revealing that, especially considering the firestorm Butler’s benching created.

To recap for the Pats fanboys:
    1) Brady = GOAT and we can’t even see #2 in the rear view mirror
    2) Belichick has been an excellent coach overall but he cannot walk on water, if you know what I mean. His principled approach may well have cost the Patriots that Super Bowl.
    3) The “Patriot way” was largely Brady’s talent and crazy work ethic. Other Patriot players have said as much.
    4) Brady is now retired. Leave him alone, put away the hate, let him enjoy his retirement.

  45. When you see the team put it all out there and lose, yea, it still sucks. But when you watch the head coach stubbornly refuse to try everything he can to win the Super Bowl and he keeps an active player on the sideline? That hits a lot different. It’s valid to point out all the other wins in Belichick’s defense, but that loss to Philly tarnishes the coach’s legacy forever. It’s on him.

  46. Some of these comments are just embarrassing. One player, a player who was having a poor season and was sick the week before the SB was not the difference in that game. To suggest it was an “ego” thing is just ignoring BB’s whole career where he does what is best for the team, regardless of what people think. I’ve run into Malcolm twice in Miami and asked him point blank about this, and while he won’t say what it was, he maintains he has no hard feelings towards Bill for what he did. That says to me there was more going on than what people know, and it’s in his and the team’s best interest to keep it that way. The clear agenda being pushed here is so predictable and tiresome.

  47. Maybe if Devin Mcourty ever coaches a team to nine super bowls, he’ll understand some of the things Bill Belichick did to make that possible. We all know Tom Brady was the reason the team won all those super bowls, but Belichick created the environment to make it happen. Most coaches, even most of the great coaches wouldn’t have been able to hold everything together to win six super bowls. Bill isn’t perfect, but every decision was well thought out, and there were good reasons for doing things that maybe some of us wouldn’t be able to understand.

  48. It really must suck to know that the one time your team won a Superbowl, it was only because another team let you win it.

  49. I love how people talk like BUtler is Deion Sanders in his prime lolololol

Butler also returned to the Patriots on a longshot to make the team. Seems obvious that whatever the reason was for the benching, Butler accepts responsibility. It’s not the coach’s doing it’s his. I respect that.

    ——————–

He also dropped a pass while wide open on their own trick play. Didn’t ya know? Brady never made a mistake. Ever. It’s why BB drafted Garoppolo in 2014. He wasn’t sure if Brady was going to be able to be reached and coached anymore.

The media totally glossed over his putrid postseasons from 2007-2012 and so a portion of our own fanbase doesn’t even pretend to have a clue about it. They just act like it didn’t happen. It’s a classic new alternate reality tactic that you know who likes to use in the orange skin.

It’s one reason why Brady was shown the door, too. It’s also why he pouted in 2019 and why the D holding the Rams to 3 points the very next SB, after 3 INTs in the AFC title game (again), gets buried in this story. Brady is not perfect. His fanboys think he is, just like how they can’t believe Butler did anything wrong. lol

It’s not enough for spoiled, obnoxious, front running Pats fans who only cared starting in February of 2002, so they follow the anti-BB media, enable bad adult behavior by players, and somehow BB ends up being the bad guy for other adult human mistakes or blunders. This would only happen in today’s internet/social media world. This WASN’T happening 15+ years ago.

Accountability is big in NE and it’s a massive reason why the team was so successful. Once the players like Gronk, Amendola, Brady, Butler, Dion Lewis, etc, all started to not stay in their lane, it created problems.

No team succeeds without personal accountability. BB didn’t not play Butler for some random reason. There were absolutely reasons why the headcase Butler was moved down the depth chart.

A real shame Jon Jones got hurt, because he was taking his job by the end of that season anyway.

Strange, innit? There was 1 3rd down to Agholor were he juked Bademosi out his shoes, which obviously would have been a big tackle, but other than that, this was a classic modern era SB that the league wants. Offenses trading blows.

Ds are gassed by the end of SBs, which is why the team with the ball last wins. It happens now almost every game.

Brady fumbled. He panicked, didn’t move his feet, had his classic “Brady Lock” into a binky, and voila, they lose.

It had very little to do with if a nickelback played or not. Butler was playing poorly down the stretch at that point and got torched by awful Corey Davis in the Tenn game and he wasn’t much better vs Jax in the title game.

And then the “flu” struck because he didn’t have a new contract.

  53. 505 passing yards and lost the Superbowl….

Losing the 2015 AFC title game in Denver because if a missed PAT as well as a muffed punt a few weeks prior to that…surrendering home field….

So now we’ve gone from the Patriots videotaped the Rams walkthrough in the Super Bowl (which never happened) to now they were video taping their opponents for 7 years straight (which also never happened). They got caught video taping opposing teams signals (which every single team did) from an unapproved location. That’s it. End of story. The rest is a made up conspiracy parroted by haters for so long that some believe it. One google search disproves it.

  56. When was the last Belichick won a playoff game without Brady? Hmmmm. I guess Big Bill doesn’t have all the answers after all.

  57. You have to laugh at those who think Brady lost this super bowl. He passed for over 500 yards, threw three touchdowns, had no running game, was sabotaged by Belichick for benching Butler, and didn’t have Edelman. If he had a defense, he wouldn’t have needed to pass at all on that final drive. Just saying.

  58. The theory I tend to believe is that BB’s intention was to force the Eagles to pass the ball, and have Nick Foles beat them with his arm. So, he started his biggest and most physical defensive backs.

Foles made three or four unbelievable passes during the game, including at least one on fourth down. He had the game of his life that day.

It’s also worth noting that all of NE’s Super Bowl games were close. Philly’s 8 point win was the largest margin of any of the games in the BB era, though it would be surpassed the following year with the 13-3 win over St. Louis.

Sometimes the other team just plays better. I don’t know that there’s any more to it than that.

  59. The theory I tend to believe is that BB’s intention was to force the Eagles to pass the ball,

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is not the issue here. Like Chiefs defense couldn’t do anything about Jalen Hunt in first half, and the game plan failed. Then they made adjustment at half time.

It is common that a game plan fails in first half, but then coaches should make adjustment at half time, shouldn’t they? When his original game plan didn’t work, why didn’t the garbage change it and insert Butler?

  60. Of course Devin doesn’t know. Nobody knows aside from me. Malcom asked Bill if it might be a good idea not to let the opposing offense to move the ball downfield every possession. Bill was insulted.

  61. We watched the game live. Apparently, Patriots fans don’t remember. New England’s defense needed to make one stop on third down or fourth and the team would have won. They failed to do either. It was the same stuff when Brady had to carry Belichick’s defense to that 43-40 win against Mahomes and outscore the Chiefs in overtime of that AFC championship.

  62. You guys are worse than Yankee fans.

Mike McCarthy was a complete waste of space. If he won 6 Super Bowls, and got my team to 9, I’d buy his venti no foam latte’s for the remainder of the time he drew breath on this earth.

They name streets after the towel boy in Green Bay. They’d probably rename the STATE after Mac if he had won 6 Super Bowls.

    Get a grip. Honestly.

  63. Brady has ZERO winning seasons without elite coaching and ZERO Super Bowl titles where he won them for his team instead of his team winning them for him.

    Some GOAT….

  64. It was the same stuff when Brady had to carry Belichick’s defense to that 43-40 win against Mahomes and outscore the Chiefs in overtime of that AFC championship.
    ——-
Like when Brady threw the game losing INT that was nullified because of a guy lining up offside and a bogus roughing the passer call benefited him? That kind of carrying? 🙂

Montana didn’t need to be carried by anyone. He won rings for his team. He didn’t mooch off their accomplishments and take all the credit. The real GOAT.

  65. But most Patriots fans don’t care, because they are fans of the garbage.

Your QB didn’t know how to play football when his favorite plays were taken away. Unfortunately in NFL playoff, it is 1-game series and one of the playoff teams was able to do it, we just didn’t know which team it would be when playoff started.

FYI, Michael Jordan would have won only 3 champions if NBA playoff was 1-game series. Aaron Rodgers would have made to 3 SB at least if NFL playoff was 7 game series.

  67. Its fair to say that every coach with 9+ NFL championships is better than BB and his 8…
Lets see your list. Lombardi has 6 counting his OC time in NY. Papa Bear has 6. Maybe you prefer Sean McVay and his 1 who led his team to 3 points vs BB in the SB? Shula had 3 in 42 years as a player, coach, and head coach. Gibbs had 3 in 19 years with 11 years of quit in the middle.

In addition to the obvious challenge of protecting that long, Lang said not knowing exactly where Rodgers is creates issues, too.
    ………..
“You read the defense, read their eyes, their body language, kind of tell when Aaron’s going to break the pocket, which way he’s moving,” Lang explained. “And (then) you just try to hold on, stay in front of your guy and give him a split extra second because, especially lately, you see some of our biggest, most important plays are coming off those extended plays.

  70. Maybe you prefer Sean McVay and his 1 who led his team to 3 points vs BB in the SB?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The question you should ask is “Why could Belichick build the team in a way no other coaches could?” A 3rd grade can see the obvious hint : has the way worked since Brady left?

1999 Rams offense scored only 11 points against Bucs defense in NFCCG; scored only 23 points against Titans #15 defense.
2000 Rams offense scored only 7 point till the scored was 7-31 with only 9:30 minutes left.

Lot of coaches could have done what Belichick did or could have done better with the resource invested on defense.

If Brady was so good why did he need to cheat? He smashed his cell phone. Nuff said.

  72. Do you know how good Rodgers’s line was? read “packers-offensive-line-a-major-part-of-aaron-rodgers-success”

Rodgers had great lines the second half of his career, yes.

Are you just going to gloss over that Brady wouldn’t have survived in Green Bay 2009-2015?

Someone here claim that a man should drop his pants and underwear if someone accuses him of stealing money.

GMG must be extremely …. pure.

Yeah, a quarterback being mobile and elusive is a bad thing………

Well, if QB stays in pocket, OL can just push the pass rushers aside and don’t have to hold pass rushers in front of them, which is much harder.

So making big plays need better OL and better WR, there is no “carry the team” in it.

If Brady had nothing to hide he wouldn’t have smashed his cell phone. It’s that simple. No point overthinking it.

Yes, he had something to hide. On what base are you certain that it is about football, huh?

That is like saying “that man is my father because my father is a man”.

Would you trust your line if you were getting sacked more than all of your peers?

Rodgers suffered 2 concussions in 2010. His career could have ended before it took flight.

And as I asked you earlier this week; why does Bradys greatness come at the expense of other great QBs. Why do you always make this Brady V Rodgers, Brady V Mahomes.

If your guy is so great, shouldn’t he stand on his own merit?

  79. The equipment manager referred to himself as the “Deflator” in text messages for God’s sake. The Patriots lawyers are actually on record claiming it was because he was on a diet. What choice do Pats fans have but to deny the incessant cheating? It would mean their entire “dynasty” is a fraud. Goodell destroyed the Spygate tapes because he knew the integrity of the game would be called into question. When the book is written on the Brady/Belichick era, cheating will be on the first page!

Not just that one…another one that was talking about deflation. Im sure they didnt mean deflating balloons.

Oh yeah you’re right. “Wright loss”. 😂😂😂😂😂 Tommy must think we’re stupid.

The Tommy cult is as insecure as their hero. It’s hilarious.

  84. The Patriots offense threw for over 500 yards. They ran for over 100 yards. Yes, Brady fumbled at the end on an excellent rush by the Philly defense, but the Pats offense was not the problem. They even had a chance at the end with a hail mary (Chris Hogan was actually interfered with as he was running down the field, btw–literally got blind sided as he was at about the 25 yard line heading to the end zone while the ball was in the air. Pats should have had one more play from the 25, but that’s a story for another day).

The Pats defense gave this game up specifically, their pass defense. So, yes, benching their pro bowl CB for the game might of made the difference. Just saying.

Ironically, just a few years earlier in the SB against the Seahawks, Pats DB Kyle Arrington was getting lit up. In the 2nd half, Belichick put in Butler, which pretty much changed that game.

  85. I remember years ago some people said it was because he was late to some team meetings and when Steve belichick tried to address this with him He was very disrespectful to him. He was benched because he was very disrespectful to the head coach’s son for no reason.

  86. I can’t believe the Patriots organization still has that Tommy excuse Wells Report Context site up. Take it down it’s an embarrassment to the franchise.

And doesn’t do a thing to change Brady’s guilt.

Butler got benched for a variety of reasons and it’s not why they lost the game. Philly got 2 illegal TDs and Brady dropped a wide open pass and then fumbled on the last drive to lose the game.
