Free agent defensive lineman Calais Campbell is making the rounds as he weighs his next destination.

The Ravens released Campbell on March 13 to save $7 million in cap space.

He already has visited the Falcons and Jaguars and has the Jets and Bills on his itinerary next week, Tiffany Blackmon of 929TheGame reports.

Campbell recorded 5.5 sacks with four tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits in 14 games with the Ravens last season.

Since the Cardinals made Campbell a second-round pick in 2008, he has spent nine years in Arizona, three in Jacksonville and three in Baltimore.

Campbell is a six-time Pro Bowler.

  1. The Mayor of Sacksonville will return for a year and then it will on to Canton after that.

  2. Free agents usually, and most always, come to Buffalo first, get an offer, and then they go elsewhere, shop that offer, get a better one, and sign. If Calais is hitting Jersey first, and then Buffalo, well, the times they are a changin! Come mentor Rousseau, Campbell! U!

  3. Wish Campbell would stay with the Ravens. Whoever gets him will be adding a high quality individual in the locker room as well as an impact player on the field. He may have lost a step, but he’s still playing at a very high level. Nothing but respect for the man.

  4. Calais will be greatly missed in Baltimore. Not only as a player but as a leader. This whole crazy affair with Lamar Jackson has tied the Ravens like a pretzel during the signing period. I hope I never see Lamar in a Ravens jersey again.

  5. Not sure how much he has left, but I saw him block a FG last year I think. He still has his strength. He might fit the bills style of rotating the defensive lineman for the sake of rotations as an older guy.

  6. I had to register so that I can give it back to all the Jets haters who have populated the comment sections here for years. All of the fake Pats fans who stopped being New England fans after Brady left. J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets

  7. In response to fans that love to assume Pats fans are fair-weathered, I have been one since 1961 when they played at Nickerson Field and I could literally walk up to the back of the end-zone with my dad.

It’s clear that signing a QB with Super Bowl victory(ies) on his resume can draw the interest of veteran free agents, especially ones that are not looking for a big pay day. The malleable cap rules make it easier to sign both the QB and others if a team really only cares about a one and done championship year and will push cap hits to future years.

That wasn’t true about the Patriots two decades of dominance, nor the current Chiefs. It was true about the LA Rams and appears to be true of the wannabe Jets. The Jets have played their 2023 hand well. Let’s see if they close on Rogers and then do what they haven’t done since 1967. That’s why they play the games.

  8. Great career, but now a part of a rotation at best, he should chase that last contract and then retire healthy.

  9. Good career but it’s over. If you want a guy to block FGs or extra pts, he’s your guy.

  10. This would be a great short-term pickup for the Bills. It wouldn’t suprise me to see them trade Oliver if they’re able to get this done.

“Never wanted to be a winner” – and I wonder what team he’d have to go to in order to indicate that he did want to win? Certainly not the New England Patriots, who will have a hard time avoiding 4th place in the AFCE this coming season, and will likely be QB-shopping in the years after that.

Pretty fair/measured comments Tiger. I would add that both the Pats and Chiefs (and the Colts with Payton) and some others of course were no doubt able to take advantage also of having star QB’s that were “homegrown” and didn’t need to go searching for such a critical piece year after year. More power to those organizations. The less likely approach did work for the Rams, as you said, as well as the BUCS in recent years- so we will see if it pays off for the Jets….at least it gives their fans something to get excited about. I think the response by many to NE fans here comes from the observation of those who are often the first to post on other teams storylines in usually childish taunts like “he’s a loser, he’s a colossal bust, the only reason the Pats have ever lost a game is because Goodell called the refs at halftime, etc.” while not EVER acknowledging that the Pats org swings and misses too on occasion – these same people have often posted with glee about another team’s player getting injured.
One suspects it’s because they really dont know much about the game – and are unable to tolerate any criticism or articulate or engage in some Intelligent football debate – which frankly is great fun- great to be passionate about one’s team but the Jerry Springer approach wears out quickly.

  12. Thank you for the thoughtful response, reality. Can’t agree more with the thesis that intelligent football debate (analysis) is great fun and childish taunts diminish any discussion.

I noted that someone who I usually read with interest because he is prone to thoughtful posts fell victim above to reacting to an inane comment, choosing to add to such banter instead of ignoring it. It really isn’t hard not to feed the trolls. It just encourages them.

As for the AFC East, this is the first year since 2008 that an observer couldn’t bank on the division winner before the season started. That should make the games even more interesting. I can understand why an observer would pick the Patriots for 4th place. History tells me the division winner will need to stay healthy, play excellent defense and be coached well. Given those caveats, I might not pick the Patriots but I wouldn’t bet against them.

  13. Your right- wouldn’t bet against them either!! In that regard, have also observed this whole Brady vs Belicheck “debate” with great amusement.
One of the best to ever coach the game + one of the best to ever play the most critical position = pretty much in (shockingly) incredible results! Not sure what all the fuss is about!
