Longtime Sean Payton assistant coach Joe Vitt is coming out of retirement to work for Payton again.

The Broncos have announced their full coaching staff for 2023, and Vitt’s name was a surprise on the list, as senior defensive assistant.

Vitt coached on Payton’s staff in New Orleans from 2006 to 2016, including as interim head coach in 2012 while Payton was suspended for the Saints’ Bountygate scandal.

The 68-year-old Vitt got his start as an assistant on the Baltimore Colts’ staff in 1979 and has also coached with the Seahawks, Rams, Eagles, Packers, Chiefs, Dolphins and Jets.

Other new names on the Broncos’ staff include Jamar Cain as Pass Rush Specialist, Addison Lynch as Defensive Quality Control, Lou Ayeni as Running Backs Coach, Davis Webb as Quarterbacks Coach, Austin King as Assistant Offensive Line Coach, Zack Grossi as Offensive Quality Control, Logan Kilgore as Offensive Quality Control, Favian Upshaw as Offensive Quality Control, Isaac Shewmaker as Defensive Quality Control and Shaun Snee as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

  1. Bringing back all the “old”crew…we’ll see how it goes without Brees at the helm.

  2. He was Saints linebacker coach for years and never did he elevate any players we drafted. He got a lot of cover from free agents,or traded players. But never coached up our linebackers The truth !!

  3. Too much change in a short period of time in Denver. This year should be better, but still not great.

  4. Payton is 18-12 without Brees with a bunch of schmoes at QB. Brees is 30-28 without Payton. I love people with no grasp on reality. Its so easy to prove them wrong.

  5. Correction for the Bountygate suspension. Brees is 37-37 without Payton.
Payton’s win percentage without Brees .600 is about the same as Brees’ career win % .601
Brunell 0-1 (week 17 of 2009 resting starters) Luke McCown 0-1 (in 2015 when Brees was 7-8) Seimian (4) Teddy B 5-1 (the one loss was also a week 17 resting starters game) Taysom Hill 7-2 Winston 5-2 Siemian 0-4 Book 0-1 – So Payton is 18-10 without Brees when trying to win games.

  6. Payton went to the NFC championship game in first season with the Saints with a ragtag group on Defense. Brees wasn’t really even in his prime yet that season. That AFC gauntlet is tough but don’t be surprised by a quick turn around if those guys can buy in.

  7. If last season showed us anything, it is that we should expect this team to compete with the Raiders for last place in the AFC West.
