Commanders won’t pursue Lamar Jackson

Despite the rumors, the Commanders never had interest in pursuing Lamar Jackson and won’t pursue Lamar Jackson. The quarterback seemed a good fit for the franchise, but if Jackson lands elsewhere, it will be a much farther move from Baltimore.

“I’m not sure where it all comes from,” Commanders General Manager Martin Mayhew said Monday, via Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com. “From the very beginning, we’ve been very consistent with our message, and it continues to come up. . . . It’s coming from somewhere. It’s not coming from us.”

Mayhew praised Jackson but made clear the Commanders are rolling with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett.

“There are a ton of talented players that could help us that we don’t end up talking to for various reasons, and Lamar falls into that category,” Mayhew said, via JP Finlay of NBCWashington.com.

Jackson tweeted Monday morning that he has requested a trade from the Ravens with the sides far apart in contract talks. Colts General Manager Chris Ballard said Monday afternoon that his team is doing due diligence on Jackson.

The Commanders, though, will not pursue him.

“I won’t get into specifics; I don’t want to sound critical of anyone,” Mayhew said. “[Jackson]’s a very talented guy.”

One of the reasons the Commanders won’t pursue Jackson is Howell. The Commanders saw Howell play only one game — a Week 18 victory over the Cowboys — and he completed only 11 passes. But that was enough to bolster their belief that Howell is their franchise quarterback.

“One of the problems in the league is guys play too much too soon,” Mayhew said. “I think Howell played the appropriate amount last season. I think he’s going to be a good player.”

  1. Ravens could trade for Fields with Bears. Fields would fit perfectly Ravens offence.

  2. Happy for Eric Bienemy, Washington would be setting him up for failure, if they traded for a running back to play the quarterback position.

  3. It’s a huge risk to trade away any number of 1st rounders. You see Russell Wilson, and the success he had, and now he’s not worth building around. Just last year, how about the Watson trade and pay?

If the browns swung and missed, it has major implications for these teams. You build to be in position for a good qb when it comes along, you def don’t want to get desperate. That’s the worst thing you can do.

  4. The Commanders are the biggest “no count” team in sports. Until Snyder sells the team nobody out of the beltway will care what they do. Bienemy is going to hate the day he moved on from K.C. He better get used to losing.

  5. So for all the Lamar fans out there saying he’s being undervalued, here’s something that should open your eyes:

The Commanders are saying Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett > Lamar Jackson.

Be upset all you want, but the above is not some snarky late night post. It’s a simple fact that shows what Jackson’s worth really is.

  6. There are two teams with top flight QBs who don’t want to be on those teams anymore. Green Bay and Baltimore. Both players may be said, fairly, to be head cases – one is passive aggressive, the other refuses good advice. Both think they’re geniuses. One gets huge amounts to play and wrecks salary caps, the other wants huge amounts to play and will wreck salary caps. One can run a bit and fling it great, the other can run it great and fling it a bit. Both have been MVPs. Neither has any recent playoff success. Both are causing their present teams massive headaches.

The only solution: The teams simply swap QBs.

  7. I guess it only takes one team but it’s not a good sign when a team says they aren’t interested and are confident in SAM HOWELL.

  8. I just hope Lamar makes at least 32.4M this year; I hate seeing people make it to the pinnacle and lose it.

  9. Jackson is good, but way too expensive for the Washington Football team. This will be a season of change and hopefully building. The smart move is to spend on other needs and see how well Howell and Brissett work out. Nobody expects them to go deep in the playoffs so swinging for the fence would be silly.

  10. What Dan should do, assuming he’s selling, is bring in Lamar, offer him a 500 million dollar fully guaranteed contract for five years. He’s selling so why not? Lamar would benefit from Dan sticking it to the NFL on his way back to London. Also, I’m sure Dan is not happy that Jimmy Haslam is the current owner that all the other owners are upset with. It’s a win win for Dan.

That’s not what they are saying at all. They are saying (Howell + Brisset) / cost 1 > (Jackson / cost 2.

The issue is value and risk, not talent. A middling or developing talent for a very low price can be a better value over the next 3 to 5 years than an exceptional talent and an equally exceptional price.

That’s what LJ and particularly his fans have never really grasped. As good as he is, he does not make any new team automatic Super Bowl champions. There are some teams that are so bad that they would be fortunate just to have a winning season with him. A team is not going to pay his desired salary just to be “better”, when better means battling for #2 or #3 every year instead living in the cellar.

  12. Lamar overvalues his worth. He should’ve taken the raven’s offer before free agency.

  13. Lamar will sit out next season. He and his mom will watch the NFL move on without him and realize they made a huge mistake not hiring an agent.

In fairness, the Commanders are more saying Lamar isn’t worth the guaranteed money he wants along with multiple draft picks. All things being equal, if they could get Lamar for Brisett/Howell prices without giving up picks, it might be a different story

Really, dude? Not snarky, but just plain dumb. Silly posts like this get on my nerves. It’s a business decision for must teams. You pay Howe a minimum salary while Jackson commands more. How can you possibly think Howe is a better player than Jackson? NFL teams make money whether they win or lose. So, it depends what means more to the given team. You guys look to denigrate Lamar at every turn since he’s been in the league just because he doesn’t look like you want, play like you want or talk like you want. But hey, it’s the kinda thing you get used to in this country.

Lol I’m not a Lamar fan but your not using all the facts. If you want to be accurate their saying Howell/Brissett > Jackson/minus 2 1st rd picks/minus roughly 30 million in cap.

  17. The Commanders are saying Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett > Lamar Jackson.

The Commanders aren’t saying that. The Commanders are saying that for their team, with the holes they have to fill and where the team is, Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett represent better value than Lamar. The reality is that several teams are in that position, none of which is related to collusion.

Of course, we should all take the Washington Commanders talent evaluation as the final word on any player.

Its not about Lamar being undervalued, its about him being discriminated against. You would never see the things said about a white player that are said about Lamar. Statements such as “he’s dumb”, “he lacks intelligence”, “he can’t talk or write”, “his mother is dumb”, etc. All of the typical things said by those with racial animus.

  20. Lamar Jackson is one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL but it’s too much of a risk reward involved but can Washington afford to gamble 400 million plus on a quarterback who injured himself on a backflip into the end zone???

What makes you think the Bears would trade Fields to the Ravens? For what? Would seem to be fairly obvious the Bears are fully committed to Fields.

Ignore the haters. Jackson is a top 2 quarterback in the NFL.

    ————-

He’s not even top 2 in his own division

  23. Well there doesn’t appear to be a market for Lamar in the NFL…would he accept a trade to an XFL team.

  24. Jackson is what Jackson is. Ask yourself if this was Pat or Josh on the same tender would the outcome be different? Again Jackson you had 3 years at 133 million. Everybody wants no one knows how to be at peace.

  25. I wonder how many posters here in PFT make $320,000/year. I would guess not very many, but let’s suppose that you did. In ten years you would make $3.2 million and it would take you 100 years to make $32 million. Yet Jackson says that he has to “look out for his family” and others say that he’s underpaid.

If Jackson and other players are underpaid for throwing a piece of pigskin around, how about the cardiac surgeon who performs a triple bypass on people? How much is he worth?

Sports egos are out of control.

  26. Jackson is a great athelete. He just isn’t a great or even good QB – he is mid tier at best, and typically trending towards the lower bottom of the NFL in terms of stats. Teams want to get better, and Lamar just isn’t worth a first round pick, let alone 2.
