John Lynch: Purdy, Lance and Darnold will compete for starting QB, Purdy is in the lead

The 49ers plan a three-way quarterback competition this season, but not all three quarterbacks are starting on equal footing — at least not if Brock Purdy is healthy.

That’s the word from 49ers General Manager John Lynch, who said today that Purdy, who led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game as a rookie, will enter training camp as the favorite to become the starting quarterback if he’s fully healthy.

Lynch referred to Purdy as “the leader in the clubhouse” and said that the 49ers are optimistic that Purdy’s elbow surgery was successful enough that he’ll be able to practice when training camp starts.

“Our hope is he’s ready to go for training camp,” Lynch said, via David Lombardi of TheAthletic.com.

Trey Lance, the quarterback the 49ers spent three first-round picks on, will also compete for the starting job. Lance is coming off an injury of his own but should be good to go for the offseason.

And Sam Darnold, who signed with the 49ers in free agency, will also have the opportunity to earn the starting job.

If Purdy hadn’t suffered an elbow injury in the NFC Championship Game, there would be little doubt that he would have the starting job in 2023. But his injury opens the door to both Lance and Darnold and makes the 49ers’ three-way quarterback competition one of the big stories of NFL training camps in 2023.

  1. They should get what they can back for Lance, while they can. Another camp arm will be easy to add at this point.

  2. Having 2 QBs compete for the QB1 position is reasonable. Having 3 QBs compete for the QB1 position looks like it could be a 3-ring circus, with none of the 3 getting the attention or 1st team reps to develop into the role.

  3. Famous saying. “If you have 2 QB’s, you have none.” John Lynch is a good GM, but he better hope one of these QBs runs away with this and then also plays well, specifically Purdy. If Purdy struggles the fans will want the guy they spent three 1st rounders on. But they cleaely trust and like Purdy more. Tough situation.

  4. As the saying goes, “if you have 3 QBs competing to start, you don’t have a QB”.

  5. It’s Purdy unless Lance or Darnold wows the coaching staff and players in the locker room

Lance is inaccurate and Darnold is talented so might as well kick the tires and see how’d he look in Shanahans offense

  6. Sayings may be cute or sound good, but they are just sayings. The truth is…if you have 3 quarterbacks…..you have 3 quarterbacks.

The trick is to not flip/flop once the decision for starter is made.

  7. That’s fair and smart of Lynch to spell out the depth chart now and reassure Purdy that he’s earned the starters job..This time last year Lance had the job handed to him and was talking as if he’d won a couple of Super Bowls.

  8. Darnold will start the season….Purdy will start the season on the PUP List and miss the first 4 games…book it

  9. Translation: If Purdy were healthy, he would be QB1. He’s not, so there is an opportunity for someone (likely Lance) to take it from him, just like Purdy did last year.

“Leader in the clubhouse” is a pretty common term and it’s common sense that this is the scenario. There’s not much to read into this that hasn’t already been assumed/understood. I don’t see Lance being traded unless someone wows them with an offer. Potential is still there and the value even as a backup is too. If Purdy isn’t ready and Lance plays well, it’s a good problem to have. Ultimately, I think Purdy wins out without a setback.

A second rounder is probably worth more to the 49ers than Lance’s “potential” at this point. A backup ain’t worth a second rounder. It’s been Purdy’s job for a while, Shanahan likes him more already than he ever liked Garoppolo for his offense.

  11. What does it say about your draft acumen when the QB you took with the final pick in the draft is better than the one you selected 3rd overall?

  12. Best they’ll get for Trey Lance at this point is a 3rd round pick. They should jump on it.
