Lamar Jackson pushes back on the narrative that he’s an injury risk

USA TODAY Sports

Yes, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has suffered injuries in each of the last two Decembers. Yes, he has missed time due to those injuries. Yes, some have suggested he could have returned to play after the PCL injury that he suffered in December 2022, against the Broncos.

On Tuesday, Falcons owner Arthur Blank specifically mentioned Jackson’s recent injury history when distinguishing Atlanta’s intense 2022 interest in Deshaun Watson from its current lack of interest in Lamar. That, or maybe something else, prompted Lamar to sound off on social media tonight.

“Let’s get real,” Jackson tweeted. “I rather have a 100% PCL than go out there and play horrible forcing myself to put my guys in a bad situation now that’s selfish to me.”

Jackson also said this: “I don’t remember me sitting out on my guys week 1 vs jets To week 12 vs Broncos. How come all of a sudden I sit out because of money in which I could’ve got hurt at anytime within that time frame 🤔 When we know the Super Bowl been on my mind since April 2018.”

He’s right. He never held out, never even threatened to withhold services in 2021 or 2022, even though he has yet to get an offer from the team that he has deemed worthy to accept.

Whether he should have accepted the best offer made before the start of the 2022 season is a different issue. I continue to believe that, if we knew the full details of the offer that was made, most would say, “Yeah, he probably should have taken that.”

Regardless, he suffered an injury as he closed in on the completion of his rookie contract, with no long-term financial security. Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?

As we said at the time, one of the consequences of not having an agent is that he had no one to spread that message at the time, pushing back on those in the media (like Mike Vick) who were calling him out for not putting on a brace and playing.

Of course, if Lamar had an agent, he likely would have had a contract — which would have provided the security that would have allowed him to try to play at less than 100 percent. Without that contract, he 100 percent did the right thing by not playing unless he was fully and completely healthy.

We applaud Lamar for defending himself this way. His frustration, however, raises questions as to where this all goes. Despite asking for a trade, the Ravens may be his only option. If he gets to the point where he simply won’t play for Baltimore again and if no one will trade for him, what happens?

It’s a question that needs to be considered as this drama continues to play out, one news cycle and/or tweet at a time.

  1. Enough defending him. He has chose not to have an agent, he doesn’t deserve to be defended when that leads to bad things happening. Watson was coming off a court battles and a suspension and his agent got him a fully guaranteed deal. For a guy that won the MVP, he should be smart enough to hire an agent to get what he wants. He can’t play the victim now

  2. As far as the injuries, Jackson is susceptible to them, because of his style of play. He’s not necessarily wrong for not playing, if he could’ve. But, not necessarily right either.

  3. Funny how QBs who actually finish seasons and win playoff games don’t have to make these kinds of excuses.

  4. “Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?”

Maybe because it’s the playoffs, and your team and city are counting on you.

  5. Dude, you’re a 26 year old running back that can throw. You have not finished the last 2 year in a row uninjured. Running backs at 30 decline. You need to accept this reality about yourself. Does that mean you shouldn’t get top tier QB money? NO! But it does mean it should absolutely not be guaranteed.

  6. You guys call him an idiot for wanting what he feels he’s worth and then expect him to play on a bum knee with no insurances. Now that would be idiotic.

  7. “If he gets to the point where he simply won’t play for Baltimore again and if no one will trade for him, what happens?”

Baltimore has him under contract, it’s up to them. LJ can always explore other employment options than the NFL, I suppose.

  8. This kid is going to a very blunt, brutal reality check and unfortunately it’s going to cost him tens of millions of dollars. This is the greatest mismanagement of worth and value in the entire history of the NFL, and that’s saying something.

  9. The simping for Lamar is hilarious. He’s handled this situation horribly and it is costing him very real money.

  10. If I’m an NFL owner, I wouldn’t hand the keys of my franchise to a QB who doesn’t have the common sense to hire an agent and to stay off of social media while negotiating a contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And that’s even before other considerations like his long term health and poor record in the playoffs.

  11. When you need to restructure your ENTIRE offense for 1 player, it is NOT worth it financially.

  12. Lamar wasn’t 100% and didn’t want to risk injury while facing a critical off-season in which he could potentially get a huge contract..

He protected himself, now the Ravens are protecting themselves.

  13. So was an injury to blame in 2019 when he helped choke away his best chance at a SB with that playoff bye and swift exit immediately after?

  14. Nothing to applaud here. He doesn’t sound very smart. Get an agent and get this over with already instead of doubling down on dumb decisions.

  15. This is silly. He was out over 4 games each of the last 2 years. Deal with it Lamar, you sure made Ravens fans deal with it.

  16. Yep, should have taken the best deal they offered and stepped away from the drama and uncertainty.

  17. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s only played in 24 of his last 34 games, missing 10 (nearly 30%) over that time due to injury. And now he is demanding to be paid like he won the MVP trophy last season rather than four years ago. He’s not going to get what he wants, and it is because he IS an injury risk, and he IS being too demanding.

  18. He’s lost the confidence of his head coach as well as the lockeroom. They can’t trust him. He’s also lost the majority of the Ravens fan base. The reason is that he didn’t travel with the team in the playoff game versus the Bengals. He was 6 weeks removed from the PCL sprain. He could have been on the sideline, wearing a headset and doing all he could in helping Tyler Huntley. He could have been waving a towel, cheering his teammates. But he did none of the aforementioned. He bailed on his teammates, and it did not go unnoticed.

  19. This guy can make all the excuses he wants. He was still so hurt he couldn’t even be on the sidelines w/ his teammates for a playoff game, after 6 weeks of healing? No heart, no arm, and no sense for not having an agent work w/ GMs on his behalf, like they’re trained to do. Please, would somebody give this buffoon a guaranteed contract?

  20. So calling out owners will get you traded to their team? Its pretty clear now another hold up of his is he is not able to handle the heat…heat that will come with attempting to land a trade and/or “negotiating” to land the largest contract in the NFL while sticking to your guns. You know, something an agent could handle.

  21. One injury happens. Injuries in back-to-back seasons equal an injury risk. Lamar isn’t getting paid what he wants and he should have taken one of the deals offered by the Ravens. His stock is trending down.

  22. Correction his past 3 seasons have ended with injury. He was hurt in the playoffs against the bills in 2020.

  23. This is going to get real ugly especially with LJ acting as his own agent and the back and forth on social media. The dirt throwing on each other will not end well.

  24. Lamwr may have held out from the playoffs, We don’t know. Supposedly the injury should have been healed by then but we don’t know.

What we do know is he did not even bother attending the playoff game his teammates played in. That implies he was holding out.

  25. Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?

    ____________

Because he’s being paid to do so? Pretty sure if every player only played if they were at 100% then most games wouldn’t be able to be played.

  26. First of all, Jackson is already a millionaire. This is not real world. He already has financial security. Second of all, life does not always come down to money. There was a time, when hell or high water, you went out there, and let it rip, no matter what. You have to mention here that the culture has changed. There are a lot more people about ME and about MONEY. Yea, you might get hurt. Just like the last 75 years of football. Sometimes there is a greater elevation than just money. Like giving up everything for your teammates and victory. Life is short, don’t choke on your money.

  27. He didn’t hold out. He also didn’t travel with the team to a playoff game. So there’s that…

  28. “Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?”
    .
sitting out obviously didn’t create enough interest to make any team even pick up the phone. its crazy to think he is worth what needs to be offered…to any team.

  29. There is nothing to push back on. Either you miss games because of injury or you don’t.

  30. This whole situation is caused by Lamars’ own doings. While I understand him not wanting to play when not at 100% it was a bad look for him. His biggest mistake was not getting an agent. Just a poor decision on his part.

  31. “ When we know the Super Bowl been on my mind since April 2018.”

What is he talking about? SB? Try winning a postseason game Lamar

  32. Players getting older, get injured more and recover slower. Players getting older get slower not faster. RBs have the shortest shelf life because because of the reason stated and the hits they take. QBs have the longest career shelf life because of their passing skills, football inteligience and ability to transition to a career backup. None of these attributes scream pay the man 25% of your salary cap guranteed.

  33. So then he’s saying he wasn’t injured at the end of last season and just took his ball and went home?

  34. I don’t think it has anything to do with him sitting out at the end of last year when people though he could / should play. You’ve been injured at the end of the last two years. And you want a contract that matches or exceeds Watson which is a contract he should never have gotten.

If he had won a Super Bowl he’d probably have gotten the contract. But no you’re 1-3 in the playoffs never made an CCG. You haven’t earned the contract you are asking for.

  35. When you put your house on the market and it doesn’t sell, your asking price is too high.

  36. Jackson should have a press conference if he really wants to reach out and tell his side of the story.

  37. Arthur Blank is just setting up protection for the NFL on a possible future collusion case.

  38. He has missed the last 4-5 games of the last two seasons in a row. That’s not a narrative, that’s a concerning pattern for any team considering investing $45M/year fully guaranteed.

  39. Jackson is a walking injury because he runs so much. It doesn’t matter what he says, the facts (# of games missed) speaks for itself. Jackson deserves RB salary, not QB salary. No one is scared of Jackson’s ‘passing’ abilities.

  40. I don’t think Lamar stayed off the field because of money either. As a Ravens fan I want him to be 100% too. But 2 years in a row, injuries have been the narrative. Lamar needs to realize that is a BIG factor in these negotiations. That, and his not as impressive passing stats.

  41. All we know is he wasn’t able to finish the last two seasons, due to injury. It doesn’t matter if neither required surgery. The bottom line is he wasn’t able to or didn’t want to answer the bell. That matters, especially last year when he wasn’t able to or didn’t want to appear in the playoffs.

  42. Okay.. now I’m tired of this guy. He’s been thinking about the Super Bowl since 2018 ya’ll.

  43. It’s almost as though he’s starting to learn no on wants to pay him what he has been demanding, and that he does not fare well when compared to Mahomes playing with injury.

    Almost.

  44. If not ‘injury risk’ or ‘injury prone’, is there another term for a player who misses the final month of the season and playoffs 2 years in a row?

  45. So now he admits he quit on his team last year to protect himself and his money. Thanks for confirming and by the way you missed 1/3 of the games you could have played in due to injury or sickness. I hope reavers take less in a trade and move on. Time to get a an elite qb like the great joe flaccco

  46. Airing out your dirty laundry on social media and not facing up man to man is being a coward.

  47. He didn’t play at the end of last year because he wasn’t 100% and WANTED TO PROTECT HIS FUTURE. I have no problem with that. But how is that different from the Ravens not wanting to fully guarantee a contract for a player who has finished the last 2 seasons on the sideline? They are trying to protect their future.

  48. He could have had the security he wants and the team was giving him assurances. To the tune of $133 million guaranteed. Thats a whole lot of security and assurance. It wasn’t as much as he wanted though so he turned it down. That’s not on the Ravens.

  49. “Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?” That’s fair. Also fair: Why would any team offer him a fully guaranteed mega contract when he’s been injured the past two playoff seasons with a style of play that, moving forward, lends itself to more December absences? Lamar shot his shot and came up snake eyes. Sucks to suck.

  50. Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?
    ——
Well, he was paid $23 million by the team in 2022. Is that not a good enough reason? Last I checked teams pay their players to play, not to set themselves up for the next contract. This isn’t politics where the number 1 goal is always reelection…

  51. He made his choice. He now can play this season for 32 million or sit/pout with Mom. I think the Ravens are fine with whatever he chooses. I don’t think they would franchise him again next year. 32 million seems like a decent guarantee, take it or leave it.

  52. Both his major injuries that caused him to miss multiple games happened on pass plays and hits in the pocket oddly enough.

OBJ has an agent. Why does he not have teams lining up? Sometimes if you ask more than what a team will pay you stay available longer, agent or not. Imagine.

  54. He badly, badly overplayed his hand. He might have bought himself some good will if he didn’t petulantly sit out late last year when all agree he could have played. Yeah, Lamar, you really stuck it to them. Lol. These players think with their emotions, which is WHY THEY NEED AGENTS and not mom or their friends from high school.

  55. This is where having an agent is key. The back and forth on social media is not benefiting him in anyway. I agree with a previous comment that he needs real PR in addition to an agent. This entire situation has evolved into a circus that could have all been avoided. Such a shame ego is driving this entire thing.

    ———-

That is always a possibility, but perhaps because he sees running as a viable option, he holds the ball in the pocket for too long when a try pocket passer would have simply thrown it away

  57. Yesterday, this site criticized Bill B for not wanting to talk about Lamar. The argument was that Lamar was a free agent. But he isn’t really because he is under a tender from the Ravens.

Also, the Ravens (who I don’t like), did offer him financial protection because they reportedly had an offer on the table. He just didn’t like it – HIS DECISION.

When you run a lot, you have an increased risk of injury. That is part of his make up as a player and he, the player, and he, the agent, would be wise to understand that.

    —-
He wants everything guaranteed when he sat out last year because everything wasn’t guaranteed. He’s not worth that much if he’s not out there during the playoffs or at the end of the season when trying to make the playoffs.

His stats were pretty damn bad after September last season. He’s got a history of poor playoff performances. And he hasn’t finished the last two seasons. I wouldn’t have any interest in giving up two #1 picks and $200+ million guaranteed for him. None. the Ravens haven’t even made a conference championship game with him. Nobody in their right mind thinks he will play another five years at the same level, even though that level seems to be declining already.

And the team that gives up two #1 picks and all that money to him will regret it. That’s the easiest call in all of this.

  59. Back in the day when men played football, Jack Youngblood played 2+ playoff games on a fractured leg.

  60. “Why would he play at anything less than 100 percent when he has no protection or commitment from the team?”

Is he giving the money back that he was paid last year? He was paid to play – or, rather, not play. And the Ravens offered him an extension and more security. They offered him protection and commitment. He turned it down. He doesn’t get to use the fact that he turned down a deal as an excuse not to play. They can’t make him sign an offer – they can only offer it. If he chooses not to be protected, that’s his choice and not the responsibility of the team.

  61. Well, worst case for him he plays on the franchise tag and makes $32 million in essentially what becomes a one year “prove it” contract. There are worse tragedies than making $32 million.

  62. He has missed multiple games the past few seasons. As great as he thinks he is and whatever money he thinks he deserves, it’s meaningless if he can’t stay on the field!

  63. Good thing Mahomes played while being less than 100%, got his team the SB and won it all. Two different mindsets I guess.

  64. If he is what he claims then why not play in the playoff game? Never mind he gets sick all the time.

  65. The story is not about whether Jackson held out. The real story that needs to be reported is whether Jackson has been holding in.

  66. Many people talk about how Kirk Cousins is over payed. I couldn’t even guess who the back up is for the Vikings. The man had two one year franchise deals and got payed after, because one of his best abilities was availability. Not being able to finish two seasons in a row during negotiation time hurts the running qb. Lamar is not being paid because he has turned no wide receiver into stars because he is not an accurate thrower and he has not finished a healthy season in a while. Do his numbers show he should get paid ? Yes, but not top dollar. Too much injury risk and not enough accuracy.

  67. Yeah…SURE Lamar just like Tua’s not at anymore risk of a concussion huh? 🤔

  68. He’s not even in the top 15 of best passers. He is awesome at running around and making plays. Unfortunately for him everybody knows that usually doesn’t result in Super Bowls and usually results in injuries. He isn’t worth half of what Watson got but I’m sure some team will be stupid enough to give him more than most QBs are getting.

  69. Lamar desperately needs a reality check. You are only worth what someone is willing to pay you and he has VASTLY over valued his worth to an NFL team. Let’s be honest here, if it was Patrick Mahomes who was on the tag you would have half of the teams in the NFL lined up offering draft picks and big bags of money to sign him. Why because HE is worth it. Lamar Jackson is a younger Cam Newton also an MVP but where is he now ?

  70. ALL quarterbacks are injury risks, but running quarterbacks even more so.

Quite frankly, we don’t know what Jackson is asking for. Everyone assumes it’s a Deshaun Watson contract, but since Jackson and the Ravens aren’t talking, we have no idea.

  71. I’m not sure how much good having an agent at this point would do, the damage is done. It seems the only way for him to make his ridiculous salary demands now would be to get an incentive-laden contract.

  72. Jackson didn’t refute the statement. He just made an excuse as to why he didn’t play with the injury. Bottom line is he’s missed nearly a 3rd of the past two seasons and that is not easy for teams to overlook when you are asking for a guaranteed deal.

  73. He may be mistaken for not having an agent but one thing he knows: his style of running the ball is injury prone versus a QB who runs once in a while. Thus his protection that will let him run wild is that contract that takes care of him no matter what.
I dont he cares what happens to him if he gets the money no matter what and that is just what other team owners are shying from.
Who wants to shell out big money for a guy who cant play and you still have to pay someone to replace that person. Ya that dont work and Mr Smith of the Union knows it but he reps the players.

Vikes didnt offer cousins a new contract even though he offered to take a cut. He is done with them, may be traded before next season who knows

  75. Whomever signs Jackson will need a top-tier backup QB who can run the same offense, which means that the team will be forced to have 2 highly expensive QBs, both of whom can get injured (because of Jackson’s style of play). That necessitates having a decent to good 3rd string QB. Ultimately it means having to throw $65 – $80 million just for 3 QBs every season. No team wants that.

  76. Whomever signs Jackson will need a top-tier backup QB who can run the same offense
    ———–
You can use a rookie to back him up (e.g. Dorian Thompson-Robinson). Running QBs don’t need to sit on the bench and learn the game/offense–it’s the opposite, actually. A late rounder solves your backup problem.

  77. This is getting ridiculous, Lamar. You can’t debate injuries. You say you’re not a risk, your medical records say otherwise. Fight it all you want, facts are facts.

  78. Apparently Lamar hasn’t seen the tributes to Willis Reed after his death. Reed played the NBA Finals on a bad leg (sound familiar Lamar) led his team to the championship and was named MVP. Qualities that Jackson will never possess. He didn’t want to play because it would have showed how bad a pocket QB he is when he wasn’t able to run. Sadly, those days seem to be behind us.

  79. I’m happy to see Lamar provide his perspective. Yes, he has missed time, but neither injury was due to his running. If anything, on both plays, he was holding on to the ball too long trying make something happen in the passing game. From watching every game he’s ever played professionally, he is actually better at protecting himself as a runner than as a passer. So this narrative that he is an injury risk due to his running isn’t accurate. Having said that, I’m not going to mindlessly defend Lamar. In a nutshell: he can do things no other QB can do, but he doesn’t CONSISTENTLY do things other QBs do routinely. He is both exciting and maddening to watch.

  80. Lamar’s been a fool the way he’s handled his contract negotiations. He’s leaving hundreds of millions of dollars on the table.

  82. You dont get what you didnt pay for or you get what you pay for or something like that. Dude get an agent already.

  83. One of Ozzie Newsomes last 1st round pick hires….IF he was STILL GM he would say fire him….I’ll draft another QB

  84. Teams don’t want to pay Lamar’s ability to run cuz he could get hurt. So team aren’t willing to pay him he thinks he’s worth.
