Bill Belichick noncommittal about Mac Jones starting over Bailey Zappe

When healthy, Mac Jones has started every game for the Patriots since they drafted him two years ago. But Bailey Zappe‘s performance in the games Jones missed last season has led to some questions about whether Jones really deserves to be the Patriots’ starter. And Bill Belichick declined to answer those questions at the league meeting.

Asked if Jones and Zappe will be competing for the starting job, Belichick didn’t directly answer.

Everybody will get a chance to play. We’ll play the best players,” Belichick said, via MassLive.com.

Asked again if it will be a competition, Belichick again said, ”Everybody will get a chance to play.”

Belichick said he isn’t promising a starting job to any player at any position.

“Every position,” Belichick said. “Everybody will get a chance to play. Everybody that’s on our roster, if they earn the opportunity to play, then based on what they do in practice and all that, then they’ll get an opportunity to play.”

Given that Jones was the first-round pick and the incumbent starter, and Zappe was a fourth-round pick who only played when Jones was hurt, it seems highly likely that Jones will start for the Patriots. But even some Patriots players wanted Zappe to start last season, and Belichick isn’t ready to say definitively that Jones is QB1.

  1. Either guy will be the 10th best QB in the AFC. Good luck playing “chess” with either one of those 2 guys, Bill.

  2. Zappe is not an NFL caliber QB. Watch his senior bowl tape and you’ll see why.

  3. If Jones goes out there week 1 and throws a few picks, and then comes back week 2 and does the same thing, then I think he’s gonna get benched, and if he’s benched again it’s O V E R

  4. Exaclty how it should be in a meritocracy.

This is how it should be in any business unless an established employee is there.

  5. In reference to the video, it’s pretty telling that Belichick is resting on his track record—even in his clarification. Hiring Patricia and Judge to run the offense was a fireable offense and his success from years ago is the only reason he’s around.

  6. If Zappe comes in to replace Jones as starters this season then Jones is done as a Patriot

  7. This has been his consistent answer for 25 years (probably longer). Nobody is anointed their starting position until after summer camp is over. You may be have been a super star the previous season but if you show up fat and outta shape you may well lose your spot. Same at EVERY position not just QB.

  8. Some of us are old enough to remember, without name dropping, how once upon a time BB stuck with a 6th Round 2nd year QB instead of going with the Franchise $100 Million QB. So these comments are hardly surprising.

  9. Please stop creating controversy where none exists.

Belichick has said the same thing about every roster since 2020. Theplayers that play best play, no matter their pedigree, draft status or contract. That’s why so many undrafted free agents have contributed to Belichick teams. It’s why Brady displaced Bledsoe.

  10. Not a lot of info on Zappe yet, so who knows. But from what Mac Jones has shown us so far, Jones can be a good QB. He doesn’t really have “it” though — he doesn’t excite anyone; he has a low ceiling; he’s just a guy; etc.

  11. Sure. Bill should announce all his offensive and defensive starters months before any workouts.

  12. Delusional Patriot fans said they don’t want Lamar Jackson though because according to them Mac Jones is so good, lol. You can’t make some of this stuff up.

  13. Can’t remember any Alabama quarterback being great since Joe Namath. NOTE: (Don’t you yokels from bamaland tell me anything about Jalen Hurts. He had to go to Oklahoma to become a GREAT QB)

  14. Why does anybody ever write about what Belichek says?

Even if he stated blankly at the question. Said nothing…

The article written about it would be the exact same…

It then becomes nothing more than the writers option of what he could have meant.

  15. BB is the smartest man in the world…we mere mortals are sooo lucky to be breathing the same air as the master. I for one can’t wait till he’s out of the league. Mediocrity for the Pat’s until he and his sons are gone.

  16. Good replies by BB !…..That’s what the pre season training camp is for.
Jones has done nothing to guarantee him No.1, rather the opposite

  17. This has been Belichick’s Mantra from Day One!!!!

He will never name anyone a guaranteed starter and he even did it to Brady. Know one wants to remember that though. He treated Brady worse when he was a young QB. Kept him from getting a big head and made sure he earned his spot everyday.

That was one of Brady’s exceptional skills. He knew every day was a competition and that he was one or two bad games away from sitting early on… He did whatever he could do to be ready on Sunday and never miss a game. It’s all it takes is one injury and you can loose your starting job.

Belicheck will never commit to a starter out of the gate. And Jones and Zappe are no different. Part of his coaching strategy has always been to create havoc, competition, fear, doubt, annd a sense that every day is a job interview. And, that is what he’s doing now with Jones and Zappe.

He knows they need to be mentally tough to survive the rigors of the NFL… So they’ll both go into camp on eggshells. He’ll also bring in another QB for camp just to keep the situation like a pressure cooker…. Don’t know why this is so tough for people to understand or comprehend… But, then again, the media loves picking at a scab.. As they’re all scabs themselves…

  18. Once again what Belicheck doesn’t say is interpreted to mean whatever the writer decides it means. Silly season.

  19. Should have taken Brock Purdy.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

and fans of Belichick the garbage would claim that it was the garbage who had developed Purdy.

  20. Patriot fans better start hoping for some injuries to other teams’ QBs. Right now, they’re squarely a fourth place team because of their QB situation, and Patriot fans think everything is all right because Mac Jones had Carson Wentz numbers with the best defense in the league handing him short fields almost every week in his rookie year, lol. IT was all Patricia and Judge’s fault. Bill O’Brien will fix it, lmao. Better hope somebody has an epiphany up there and draft somebody and hit on it or trade for a player with an actual NFL skill set that they can develop because right now, they don’t have a QB with that.

  21. It’s funny that the Pats suck according to the people who have them living rent free in their brain.
I’d add that although I believe Jones to have more upside, as a Pats fan I’ve never claimed him to be anything and most realistic Pats fans haven’t either. His rookie season was solid and then Belichick made the worst move of his entire career by saddling Jones with two inept idiots to coach him last season in what was possibly worse then watching Cam Newton throw balls into the ground over and over. This season I’d say Jones makes a leap forward biggly from last season.

  22. How can this be? Jones had the greatest rookie season in the history of the league, and is on the fast track to the Hall of Fame. Mac can’t help it if COVID diminished his skills.

  23. We’ll see if there is a significant year two jump for Zappe. Evidently Bill wants to see that also. There is talk around Boston that Bill being noncommittal hurts Mac’s confidence. It’s competition, which should make an athlete worth his salt rise to the occasion.

If that was his answer it was extremely disingenuous. Was there ANY doubt that Brady would be the starter other than very early in his career?? No one in the world doubted him.

I guess Jones is not a franchise quarterback, which is not surprising.

  25. If Mac struggles with Bill O’Brien, Belichick will be vindicated. It will prove last years offensive struggles weren’t all on coaching.

When you have two QBs, you don’t have any good QBs.

I’m sure Bill Walsh and Mike McCarthy have an opinion about that. 🙂

Well Jones and Zappe are early in their careers so we’re all left wondering what exactly your point is (other than to just throw shade of course).

Totally agree. People have to stop saying stupid stuff.
It just depends who those two are. If it’s Joe and Steve or Brett and Aaron you have two great ones

    100%

A little. Cassel after the 2008 season. There were worries that Brady could come back at all after complications from his ACL repair. And Jimmy later on. After the Patriots got rolled in KC the media wondered out loud if Brady still isthe starter and Bill scoffed at that talk. Obviously it worked out really well as it played out.
