Will someone not in the top 10 trade up to get Anthony Richardson?

The teams considering taking a quarterback in the top 10 of the draft are fairly well known at this point. Beyond that, the candidates to draft a quarterback aren’t known.

More specifically, the candidates to move up into round one to draft a quarterback aren’t known.

We’ve seen it before. Six years ago, the Chiefs sprang up to No. 10 to get Patrick Mahomes, at a time when they had Alex Smith. Given Richardson’s potential, it’s entirely possible that there’s a team out that that has become smitten with Richardson and hopes to get him.

And maybe they will. Until then, they won’t say jack squat.

It likely will happen when the pick used to get Richardson is on the clock. Possibly at No. 3, when the Cardinals select.

Peter King mentioned during Friday’s PFT Live that, when the Bears were shopping the first overall pick, a team not in the top 10 was exploring a jump to the top of the draft order. If that team wanted Richardson, it could still jump to No. 3 — assuming the Panthers take C.J. Stroud at No. 1 and the Texans take Bryce Young at No. 2.

Regardless, it’s always important to expect the unexpected when potential franchise quarterbacks are in the draft pool. The Bills traded up to get Josh Allen. The Ravens traded up to get Lamar Jackson. The Chiefs traded up to get Mahomes. The Texans traded up to get Deshaun Watson.

It makes sense to think that someone is quietly pondering moving up to get Richardson.

  1. How to ruin your franchise 101. Trey Lance and Justin Fields all over again. Draft a kid who is five years away from learning how to throw a football, let alone read a defense

  2. Only 13 games started? Who could this guy NOT beat out in college? Mahomes was very successful at Texas Tech. You can’t say the same about this guy at Florida. He might also be another Carson Wentz. Much better chance he’s Wentz and not Mahomes.

  3. Why are we to think any team would be willing to risk a 1’st round pick on another running QB with poor passing statistics? All the hype about Richardson yet no takers on Jackson. Doesn’t add up to Richardson getting drafted in Round 1. I wouldn’t even consider him until the 4’th Round.

  4. No one is trading up to get him. This feels like that whole Davis Webb is a franchise QB thing in his draft class. Richardson wasn’t a good player and is a project right now. All of those players you named had production at the college level. When have you known teams to openly discuss how smitten they are with a player they want like is going on with Richardson? Andy Reid, Sean Payton, Bruce Arians, and a few others wanted Patrick Mahomes in his class, and you never heard a peep about it or a leak to the media until after the Chiefs had jumped the Saints.

  5. If you want a QB who can hit the roof, he’s your guy. Fitting a pass into a small window 20 yards downfield? Probably not.

  6. As long as some idiot owner who doesn’t watch any tape or seen to many of the Florida games is willing to take a chance based purely on he threw a football and hit ceiling, sure. Great athlete, but needs a lot of work, if it can even be fixed, on his reading D’s and passing mechanics. And bottom line Florida sucked with him as a starting QB.

  7. Best spot for him is someone that already has a QB. Seattle, New Orleans, Tennessee. If he plays early he will not develop.

  8. The Chiefs had Alex Smith, a great mentor. The Seahawks have Geno Smith, another great mentor. Unless one of the teams that wants to move up has a great mentor (named Smith?) behind whom Richardson could sit and learn for a year, this might be a very risky move. It’s easy to ruin young QBs.

  9. If he’s still available at 10, I’m sure Howie will be willing to trade down and fleece yet another GM.

Your not comparing similar things at all. The player with “no takers” will cost the same draft capital (if not more) to acquire than Richardson will and will end up costing roughly 35 million MORE in cap space. Jackson your also getting a finished product (for better or worse) whereas with Richardson the coaches feel there’s still tremendous untapped potential(granted it may never be tapped but when selecting a franchise qb sometimes that’s the risk you take to TRY and find an elite one)

  11. All these so called internet draft analysts are comical. Same people who said Lamar Jackson needed to switch to WR, Josh Allen was to inaccurate, Kyler Murray was to small, and Patrick Mahomes was just an inaccurate air raid QB who was a mess are all now saying Richardson will be a bust. It’s as of these people don’t learn. All four of the QBs they were certain would be busts in recent years all have played at mvp caliber levels, all are multi time pro bowlers, all playoff QBs, one has won the Super Bowl but AR is going to be a bust they’re certain of it…. Right.

Despite all the stats Patrick Mahomes was 13-19 in college.

  13. Lamar Jackson has started 1 (ONE) game in December, and January in the past 2 years 1! is that the guy to give you a super Bowl?

  14. Anyone who is smitten with Richardson right now is gonna have buyers remorse in a year or two. He has athleticism and a strong arm, but that don’t make you a good QB

  15. I think I would go after Lamar before this kid. He is unproven and stats are not good. Is his accuracy and TD-to-Int ratio going to improve when he gets to the next level?
He seems like someone you would take a flyer on in rd. 6-7 because he would need a lot of time and coaching to hopefully get to where you want.

John Elway was below .500 in college too, but both guys looked like they should have been the number one overall pick. The tape is more indicative than any stats. If you actually watched them play, they looked exactly like they looked when they were winning super bowls. Go online and you can see Mahomes in college. You’d wonder why he wasn’t the first guy picked. have to scout with your eyes, not your ears. Elway and Mahomes were two of the easiest guys to see.

Despite all the stats Patrick Mahomes was 13-19 in college.

  17. Patriots
Belichick is feeling the heat and knows Mac Zappe can’t carry him to the playoffs

  18. You mean Jamarcus Russel 2.0? Turn on the tape, that kid is not good… at all

  19. So this kid looked good at the combine & he’s already being labeled a top tier starter by these morons in the media? He struggled at Florida & only started 13 games in a pass heavy Gator Offense with a dismissal record to show for it. He couldn’t read Defenses in College and unless he’s drafted to sit & learn from better than average QB1 a team might get a good QB. He has the arm but not the ability.

  20. Giants should trade everything to move up to draft this kid. It would be an Alex Smith/Mahomes situation. He can sit behind Jones for a year or two.

  21. And people need to stop comparing him to Jamarcus Russell. Russell was actaully a very good college QB. You could see the red flags a mile away because he showed up to the combine fat, but you’re comparing apples and oranges. Russell was a classic dropback passer who played at a high level in the SEC. Richardson is raw as you get and has barely played QB literally with the offenses he was put in at Florida. Also, the knock that he’s inaccurate downfield is wrong too. It’s the one thing he does great. His deep ball is very accurate. It’s everything else he has a problem with. So you might get a line of 10 for 25 for 250 yards on the regular with him if you start him early.

  22. I kind of see him going to the Vikings. Which as a fan I don’t like. What would be that plan? I don’t think he would be a better option than Kirk cousins for at least 3 seasons. Which would set the franchise back 6 seasons. Damnit it’s going to happen.

  23. Dude looks like another Terrell Pryor. I wouldn’t draft him period. Supplemental draft? Sure

  24. As a gator fan who watched every game AR played, the interest in him as a pro prospect is mind-boggling.

  25. Looks like this year’s Malik Willis. About this time last year draft geniuses were projecting MW to the Lions at #2 overall or big trade-up offers. Instead he went in the third round, and that still looks too early now.

I agree with you. AFC East is a bad weather division, the Patriots need a QB with a strong arm to have a chance in December and January. Richardson may just be the guy.

  27. Josh Allen was virtually the same player coming out of Wyoming… only difference was Allen had a few more starts, albeit in a vastly inferior league.

Don’t be so quick to label a kid a bust.

  28. Or maybe a team could jump up and take Will Levis. He exists too. Wouldn’t know it from this site though.

  29. To me, Richardson is either another Malik Willis, or potentially another Lamar Jackson/Patrick Mahomes. Trading up for him is another huge gamble.

  30. Some QB desperate team will reach on this guy. I hope it’s the Seahawks…Trey Lance 2.0.

That is a lot to type to say Mahomes wasn’t a #1 pick because he went 13-19 in college. 6-14 before the 7-5 season.

  32. OH some team not in the top 10 will trade up into the top 10 to get a QB but it WON’T be Richardson!

  33. The team that picks him better have a QB to start in front – if Seattle or Detroit are in the market for one they’d be great for Richardson

  34. Seahawks will take a defensive player with their first two picks. Maybe a QB in the 2nd round.
