Jim Kelly on Josh Allen: He “can’t do everything himself”

Thirty years ago, the Bills had a Hall of Fame quarterback who led the team to four straight Super Bowl appearances. Now, the Bills have a potential Hall of Famer who hasn’t made it to a Super Bowl yet.

What’s missing in Buffalo? The Hall of Fame quarterback from Buffalo has some thoughts.

Josh can’t do everything by himself,” Jim Kelly recently told Jackson Roberts of News 10 NBC, “and I hope they find a way to get a star running back. But I always thought [Devin] Singletary was pretty good. I just didn’t think we used him enough. But you know what? When you’ve got a guy as good as Josh Allen, you tend to probably get a little greedy and want to use him more than you probably should. But [offensive coordinator] Ken Dorsey’s doing a great job and Josh — I just hope we get that running game going to take some of the pressure off him.”

Singletary left via free agency after the 2022 season. During the most recent campaign, the Bills traded Zack Moss for Nyheim Hines, but then barely used Hines on offense. They have James Cook, who showed promise as a rookie. They also added Damien Harris in free agency.

Kelly said Dorsey is doing a great job. But someone necessarily isn’t, or it wouldn’t feel as if Allen lacks sufficient assistance.

It’s either a talent issue or a coaching issue. That can create finger pointing and dysfunction between the coaching staff and the front office. Either G.M. Brandon Beane and company aren’t giving coach Sean McDermott and company enough talented players, or McDermott and company aren’t getting enough out of the talented players they have.

If the Bills have another year that doesn’t result in a return to the Super Bowl or at least a return to the AFC Championship, it’s hard not to wonder what will be done to get more production around Allen while they still have Allen.

  1. Kelly’s from another era, but he’s saying what we are all clamoring for in Buffalo; “WEAPONIZE JOSH!” Give him as many playmakers as possible because this is as good as theyve been in over 20 years. The time’s now, fill up the cupboards!

  2. If Damien Harris can stay healthy, he really solves a lot of the issues. He & Cook can be a fantastic tandem, if they continue to improve the line.

Kelly is right to this point, though. People tend to say Mahomes is the better QB, and he does have the rings – but he has had so much more of a team around him the past few years. Give Allen a real running game and the narratives might change a bit.

  3. I get a kick out of “while they still have Allen”. The guy is 26 years old and have him signed until 2028, unless he gets hurt that is a pretty big window to be around

  4. Buffalo has needed a solid running back room for 3 years now and 3 years have gone by with terrible attempts at fixing the running game like trading for Hines. Secretly Buffalos window is closing with this current roster and coaching staff and nobody seems to realize it.

  5. Mahomes had a Top 5 OL last year and went unsacked with a bad ankle in a SB win. Josh had a bottom 5 OL and was playing with an injured growing arm because his right tackle didn’t exist and let’s guys at him untouched; got crushed in the divisional.

Hmmmm, it’s almost like having a great OL is a huge advantage to a terrible one and the Chiefs are our biggest rivals. If only a GM could see his and do something about it.

  6. Kelly had Thurman Thomas, who was a dangerous runner that could dominate a game and an excellent receiver. Bills have an opportunity to get Josh a running back in the mold of Saquon Barkley but also an outstanding receiver, Bijan Robinson.

  7. Buffalo’s window has already closed on this iteration of their team. Their fans just don’t know it yet. They should have won a Super Bowl in 2020 but definitely should have in 2021, but then 13 seconds happened. They had the best roster in football from 2019 to 2021.

  8. wish the Bills would draft 6 offensive linemen in this draft. 1 or 2 may not pan out but 3 or 4 will anchor the OL for 10 years. You know how you defend Mahomes & Burrow? Keep them on the sideline. Then in 2033 we’ll be saying ‘remember when the Bills drafted those OL in that one draft’?

  9. If we made “the Bills window is closed” a drinking game, no one would make it through the offseason sober.

  10. The old Bills had Bruce Smith. He’s perhaps the greatest pass rusher that ever played. When teams get players like Bruce Smith and Lawrence Taylor, they don’t need the offense to win every game. The current Bills are doing great. They’re consistently knocking on the door every year. Eventually they’ll kick it down.

  11. Awh – He got a top 5 receiver good #2 receiver and tight end with a good defense but he can’t do it all himself- smh ..

  12. Translation: McDermott doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s focusing resources and draft picks on maintaining top 5 D and not giving Josh a decent OL and WR2 and WR3. Eagles and Chiefs both focused on improving their OL last season and it worked. Bills need an offensive minded head coach.

  13. McDermott is done.

  14. Why not? In a 17 year career Dan Marino went to one superbowl.Maybe Josh could match him.

  15. Daboll is a better head coach than McDermott. Losing Daboll was a major loss.

  16. You really think Alan is going to hand it off when he has the opportunity to run himself. He is better than Cam Newton but he still has the same issues.

  17. Long time Bills fan chiming in & Kelly is correct. McDermott has had multiple opportunities to put together a formula that allows Josh Allen to flourish and it ALWAYS seems like 3 steps forward but eventually 2 steps back. Who’s really to blame?
Allen’s had the receivers, backs, OL & Defense to seal some wins – is this lack of chemistry or trust issue? At some point both Allen & McDermott are gonna be feeling the heat from us fans because we want to believe it’s gonna work but that clocks running down!

  18. Bills lose 4 SB. And in the play offs they almot lose t a rookie 3rd srting QB. The Bills are going south fast. Bill

  19. Both Jackson and Allen are asked to do too much. At least Allen has better receivers, but his running game is abysmal. That’s why I rate Allen and Jackson over Burrow as better overall QBs. Burrow has all the tools as his disposal and still can’t put up points against the Ravens.

Josh Allen has a huge ego and I am not quite sure why.

TB6, how does it feel to have a noodle arm as your future? LOL.

Such a dumb thing to say. Like you know him personally

  22. Allen is struggling with this, when to be the hero and save the day and when to make others do it. I remember the Vikes game and he tossed one into coverage in the end zone and it was picked.
Later in the game almost identical situation, a td would have put the game away and he almost tossed another pick. He gets polaxed with trying to win and loses focus of the situation.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. The Nat Championship game, last play, 5 yard line Auburn can win with touch down.
Told wife, no way in hell Cam gives the ball the the back. He is running it in and be the hero and win the heisman. Funny he did just that, you would have thought the other team could have figured that out too and stopped him.

  24. I like Allen’s game enough. I just think saying he’s a potential Hall of Famer, at this point, is hyperbole.

  25. More excuses for the Bills underperformance. That roster has been good enough the last 3 years to win a championship. It is a better roster than what the Rams had.

  26. Allen haters need to move on to something new. You’ve been wrong about Allen and you are still wrong about Allen. Allen and the bills aren’t going anywhere and you better get used to it.

  27. I don’t think people realize what Allen does for players and coaches. They all seem to have their best seasons with Allen as QB. John Brown in his first season with Allen had his best season in terms of receptions and yards; Beasley had his first and third ranked seasons during his first two years with Allen; diggs has had his top 3 seasons in receptions and yards and top 2 seasons for TDs.

What happens when WRs leave the Bills? Outside of Hodgins and Zay Jones, Allen’s WRs don’t even make other rosters.

Coaches too. Brian Daboll (as OC) never had an offense ranked higher than 20th in yards or points until he had Allen. In fact 2022 was the first season daboll had an offense ranked above 20 without Allen. The giants ranked 15th in points and 18th in yards. Impressive? Not!! Meanwhile, Allen had the 2nd best offense without daboll.

We haven’t even talked offensive line. Allen has elevated mediocre his whole career—players, coaches, and GM. Want Allen to do less? The front office needs to do better.

  28. May be too late – Chiefs are superior, Bengals have passed the Bills by a good margin and are getting better, and Jax is close to passing them. Yikes. Bills are more on par w Miami and need to make some desperate moves to change the narrative.

  29. Omg Allen doesn’t have any weapons? That’s funny!
The dude keeps running like he does instead of sliding, he’ll need a knee as well. Not bashing him either, js he takes alot of risk considering he’s pretty much the teams best chance at winning. Plenty of teams however would love to be as weaponless as Buffalo. Funny.

They aren’t going to a SB either

  31. Last year was the only one the Bills were favored to go all the way. There are a few comments that they blew their chances in ’20 and ’21 – but those teams weren’t favored, or really expected to make SB runs.

This past year, I do think they were the best team in the league for awhile. But injuries and a few fairly unprecedented circumstances caught up w/ them.

I have a feeling that opposing fans writing the Bills off is going to become an annual tradition. But the window isn’t closing next year, or likely any year they have Allen at QB. The Bills spent a lot of years since Kelly being irrelevant, but that’s over. Beane’s strategy is and has been to build a long-term contender.

  32. Buffalo and Minnesota have both lost 4 Super Bowls with out winning just one Pity for their fans . Heck Tampa Bay has two trophies in their showcase.

  33. Good to see the front office taking some criticism along with the coaching staff.. The offensive line is mediocre at best and Beane has attempted to address it by signing journeyman lineman in the past and this year as well. Beane’s drafts have also been more misses than hits with Ed Oliver being the biggest wiff. Beane has the opportunity to get Hopkins, but hasn’t. They are cash strapped, but dude, make it happen. Dump Oliver and his 10 mil. Oliver can be replaced by a turnstile. Use it towards Hopkins. This team, like the Chiefs, is built around the offense. It was the Leslie Frasier defense that failed not the offence.

  34. They have a great QB, they just need a running game of some sort, better protection and
also better pass rush and run stopping, oh, and another great Wideout, and they need a HC who doesnt make bone-headed decisions in game that keep them from winning and advancing in the playoffs, or gaining homefield in the regular season.
