Will Levis visited Patriots Wednesday

Wednesday was the last day that teams could host prospects at their facilities for pre-draft visits and the Patriots spent some of it with a quarterback.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team brought Will Levis in for a visit. The former Kentucky starter was a popular visitor around the league in recent weeks.

The visit also came a day after Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien said that the offense will have “a fresh start, a clean slate” in his first year on the job. Mac Jones has been the No. 1 quarterback for the last two seasons, but head coach Bill Belichick has resisted calling him the starter this offseason.

That doesn’t mean the Patriots will be taking another quarterback and it’s a good bet that Levis will be off the board by the 14th overall pick, but the Pats will head into the draft with fuller knowledge of what he brings to the table after Wednesday’s meeting.

  1. Looks like they really want to wipe the slate clean, probably a good time to cut bait on Jones anyway

  2. Also says we want you to think we might take him at 14 so anyone interested will trade ahead of NE to select Levis and another non-QB will fall a slot for NE.

    ====================================================
While I think that Mac Jones’ rookie year was overrated, his 2nd year was destroyed by Belichick’s experiment of hiring defensive coaches as offensive coordinators. Mac Jones shouldn’t be blamed for that incredibly boneheaded move. But I also feel that Mac Jones isn’t the answer at QB for NE or anyone else for that matter. Mac Jone is a game manager type of QB that offers really nothing special or unique. I do hope I am wrong about him but I really don’t think I am.

  4. All part of the draft mind games. Plus, there is a good chance he ends up the AFC. It’s funny, in two out of the last three years Mac has had outstanding coaching. Results were a national championship and a playoff appearance. If Bill was really going to trade Mac he would have been a Raider by now.

  5. I bet the Raiders would swap their 7th pick to Patriots for Mac Jones and picks if Bill O’Brien really liked Levis. These guys who only had one good year always seem to wind up being over-rated. His ceiling might not be as high as Anthony Richardson or Hendon Hooker, but I think his having playing in more games is what has teams so interested in him. He helped make a Basketball School competitive in Football. That’s not very easy to do. If a team got him in the 2nd round like Aaron Rodgers went, that would be a great story. But I don’t think that happens. Teams refuse to wait. They trade draft picks of the future like they don’t matter. Instead of developing players they focus on over priced free agents as a quick fix to make up for not having those younger players on the roster. The smart teams generally trade down not up.

  6. Ill never understand how Bill, and more importantly Kraft can possibly think its a good thing having the coach and QB at odds….First TB12, now MJ10.

How many times is it going to take to expose who REALLY is the problem?

  7. usually business by Bill. He had McDaniels interview Mayfield, herbert, and others. Just doing due dilligence

  8. Why does everyone think the Pats are cutting bait with Mac Jones. Not going to happen.

Levis is just the Pats being the Pats. And them doing their due diligence in trying to throw a monkey wrench into other teams thought process of what the Pats will do, or who’ll they’ll take. No great mystery. At minimum we’re ever he goes in the NFL they have a book on him and their own internal scouting report…

As far as O’Brien and BB keeping silent on QB 1, QB 2 or QB 3, they’ve been operating like that since day one. Granted they have a little extra reason to F with Mac Jones becuase of his melt down last year. But, this is their way of keeping their thumb on Mac Jones throat. To let him know you’re never safe and they’ll always be competition for your spot, or any spot for that matter on the roster.

That is the Pats number one motivator. Making players feel uncomfortable and never feeling safe with their status. Belichek did it to Brady his whole entire career.. Jones is no different and is no exception. Every other team coddles their QB’s or diva wide receivers. BB could care less who you are. You’re just another player in my systems. Do your job, do it well and we’re effective. Don’t or can’t do your job? See you later, we’ll get someone who can. NEXT…. No one is greater or bigger than the team, no matter who you are..

  9. . They trade draft picks of the future like they don’t matter. Instead of developing players…..

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A coach can’t develop talents, a coach can design schemes to use the talents of his players.

Just like a math teacher won’t be able to turn a student into a mathematician, no matter how good the teacher is. Whether a student will be a mathematician in future or not is all on the talents of the student. IF HE IS TALENTED, HE CAN BE A MATHEMATICIAN WITH LOT OF TEACHERS.

  10. If you challenge BB and you’re name is not Brady you are sent to the cornfield.

  11. Well I don’t think Mac is going to turn out to be a good quarterback Levis is definitely going to be a bust.

  12. When evaluating Mac Jones’ brief career, 2022 doesn’t count. Simple as that. He had a excellent rookie season — 10-7, playoffs, the best season of the rookie QBs — but in 2022 he was the victim of a head-scratching decision by Belichick to have Patricia/Judge lead the offense. With O’Brien now the OC, Jones will, I predict, have a solid season. Way, way too soon to write him off.

  13. They’re not using #14 on a QB. However, just about every team picking after the Pats doesn’t have a big need at QB (except Tampa). So this is probably due diligence where if they like him and he slides BB could trade up from #46 to take Levis late 1st or early 2nd.

This could easily be done especially if Mac is part of the trade package.

Mac is a good, not great, QB. BB looks around and sees Mahomes/Allen/Burrow/Herbert and knows he needs a more dynamic QB than Mac to be successful.

Won’t really be a clean slate until Bill is not coach anymore. His buddies and family will be out the door with him.

  15. Mac Jones has had only one season in the NFL, Pats fan or not, last season was a complete waste and Belichick was to blame. All on Bill. I don’t care how Jones reacted to it, it was a Bill BLUNDER.
I think Jones has potential and this season we’ll get a better idea. I’m not against trading him for a proven but any Pats fan who wants to just trade him away for an unproven or draft picks is a complete fool. I want nothing to do with Trey Lance either. If Shanahan is willing to trade him you know he’s a bust. Hadn’t Niners drafted Lance, Jones never woulda been a Patriot.

    ——
    Very likely.

  17. Pats can’t beat Josh Allen, so they want to get the prospect who’s been compared to Josh Allen. Talk about desperate.

My how the tables have turned. The patriots dynasty is officially over. Great run fellas.

  18. “Bob Kraft has some serious regrets”

I doubt that very much. 6 Lombardis, 3 other SB appearances, 12 AFCCG, billionaire several times over.

Sure, I bet he’s crying in his breakfast every morning

  19. Part of what the Patriots use tryouts for is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of top draft picks knowing full well that they will not draft the player. It is for when they compete against the player.
Mac will have a bounce back season and with the Bills taking a step backwards, the AFC East is wide open

  20. OB and Mac have been at the stadium working together every day. Picking a QB doesn’t make them better in 2023. Besides, I’ve been told Zappe is the second coming of Brady by the fan boys so why would you need yet another QB? And they just signed a third QB the other day.

  21. Can we finally be honest…It’s become painfully clear Bill Belichick can’t draft, develop or acquire offense since Tom Brady left in free agency. A top 5 all-time first ballot HOF QB always covers a host of offensive deficiencies.

Belichick represents the head of the Patriots football operations on and off the field. While he’s been there they have won 6 Super Bowls. You can love or hate this person but as a business they know he’s a proven commodity. Some teams go decades without winning a SB.
Scotty Bowman, one of the greatest NHL Hockey Coaches of all-time was (according to one of his long retired players) hated by players he coached, yet the Montreal Canadiens won several Stanley Cups under his leadership. Maybe so were “the Vince Lombardis” and other great coaches in sports throughout history…?

This is exactly what BB is doing so he can trade down and get some 7th rounders

  25. Smoke screen, they’ve been doing advanced scouting for years on possible future competition and the possibility these people will be free agents or trade targets down the road.

Totally, absolutely agree. Another case of Bill making the other teams go “Wait, uh what?” He’s been doing this since forever; another BB monkey wrench thrown in the works. Some GM will panic and trade for that #14 pick. They will make up a reason to do so and Bill will coral a couple more picks.

  27. Every year they bring in people they have no chance (or desire) of drafting. They gain a little knowledge about someone they’ll likely play against in the future.

  28. My how the tables have turned. The patriots dynasty is officially over. Great run fellas.

The Patriots dynasty officially ended the second Brady left the premises. Want proof? During Brady’s tenure their regular season record was 232 – 72. Over 19 seasons that works out to an average yearly won-loss record of 12.2 – 3.8, and of course they won 6 Super Bowls. Since Brady’s departure the Patriots are 25 – 25, the very definition of mediocre.
The post-Brady Patriots are nothing more than just another team. They have internal struggles (Belichick and Jones), make bad decisions (bringing back Patricia and Judge), drafting continues to be a mixed bag, they’re unsettled at QB, they will struggle to make the playoffs, etc.
The glory days are drifting further and further back in the rear view mirror…

All that stopped when Tom left….. and since then it hasn’t been pretty

  31. Are the Bills really taking a step backwards?

I’ve heard that pretty frequently. But I see a team that only really lost Edmunds, and added better linemen, receivers and a legit every down back in Harris. Allen’s elbow is back to health, and Von Miller has indicated he expects to start playing again early in the season.

I think it’s a better team than 2022, and that’s without the draft. But I’d agree it will be a tough fight in the division, top to bottom. The Jets & Miami keep getting better, and the Pats still have the GOAT.

  32. Another case of Bill making the other teams go “Wait, uh what?”

    ++++++++++++++++++++

No one care about what he does now, except his diehard fans.

  33. If Bill doesn’t draft a quarterback this year, that’s telling everyone he’s trying to get himself fired. This team lacks the talent and coaching to succeed in this league. Belichick has proved it the last three seasons without Brady.

  34. Belichick represents the head of the Patriots football operations on and off the field. While he’s been there they have won 6 Super Bowls. You can love or hate this person but as a business they know he’s a proven commodity.

    —-
I wouldn’t quite say that. They were pretty bad on offense in 2019 and Brady was there.

  36. The Patriots had a draft prospect in for a visit and this matters why? They had Tyree Wilson and Will Anderson in as well and they aren’t going to be there at 14 either. It’s just part of the draft process. Means very little. Also, Levis is a New England kid so he probably was happy to check out the local team and meet some of those guys.

But, it’s the Pats so minds are blown. Over a 30 visit…. Jeesh.

    Bingo.

  38. Laughing at all the haters. The Dynasty is over blah, blah, blah. Yeah cause all the other teams have had twenty year runs in the salary cap era. Lol. Each year the mentality of the players gets worse and each year players and owners get more greedy. Good luck with ANY team having a twenty year run of dominance. #FACT
Sadly the world is all about “ME” these days, it’s definitely no different in professional sports.

You still don’t realize that Patriots must win a SB in next 10-20 years, or their fans will be laughed at for driving out Tom Brady for next 50 years, if not 100 years.

  40. The Patriots play in a bad weather division, they need a QB who can throw in the elements. Mac Jones hasn’t been able to. Let’s give Levis a shot.

And we all know Gronk only retired because Belichick was going to trade him to Detroit. Not to mention, Bill refused to re-sign Danny Amendola. That was one less clutch slot receiver target for Brady. Then the Patriots ranked 27th in scoring in 2020. What changed? That would be Tom.

    Funny you mention 2020….
Tom Brady rating in 2019 between weeks 4-17: 82 rating
Cam Newton rating in 2020 in the same timeframe: 81.4 rating

And Brady had a much easier schedule.

Lol yeah Brady was terrible in 2019. That’s a fact not an opinion.

  46. Brady threw 24 touchdowns to 8 interceptions in 2019, had a 55 quarterback rating, and passed for over 4,000 yards. Newton threw 8 touchdowns to 10 interceptions, had a 39 quarterback rating, had only 133 first downs, and forced Julian Edelman into retirement.
