There’s a new favorite to be the third overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft: Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson.

Johnson is now the betting favorite (at +250 at Draft Kings) to be the third player drafted, after few if any mock drafts had him going that high throughout the pre-draft process.

So what happened? Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported this week that Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray likes Johnson a lot and has told the decision-makers in Arizona that. There’s now talk that the Cardinals want to draft the franchise left tackle that their franchise quarterback wants blocking for him.

Of course, draft betting odds often change for reasons that prove not to be meaningful. This week the odds also changed on Kentucky quarterback Will Levis going first overall, apparently based on nothing more than an anonymous Reddit post claiming that Levis has told people the Panthers are going to draft him.

Johnson is likely to be the first offensive lineman drafted. No. 3 feels a little high, but there are people putting money on it happening on Thursday night.

  1. Gee, I wonder why Keim got fired?

All of a sudden players are GMs. I wonder where this came from? lol

  2. Has Kyler turned in all his homework yet? OTAs are about to start. He doesn’t want to get an “incomplete”.

  3. In my opinion, all these late moves by Vegas showing players suddenly dropping and others climbing, is all a ploy to get more of your money by tricking you into thinking that the new odds mean something new is happening. It’s still wrong, and you’ll still lose your money, but look, new odds!

  4. If they trade down from #3 & still get him, they will be one of the “winners of the draft,” touted by all. If they don’t trade back, they will have overspent on him.

  5. I’d fade the public here. Is the same front office that put a homework clause in Kyler’s contract going to trust his diligent evaluation of the player vs. that of their scouts?

  6. So an under-performing player that has had several issues on the field is now making GM decisions , I can’t see how that could go wrong.

  7. Legal gambling is ruining sports… and sports “journalism.” It’s not “news” when a betting line changes because some tidbit of information leaks out. It’s also not news that the Cardinals might let their dazzling, yet disappointing, franchise QB call the shots.

  8. There are many reasons AZ is the worst teaam, this is just another to add to the list.

  9. If Kyler Murry would have done a bit more studying he would know that Peter Skoronski is higer rated and Johnson will most likely be avaible at 15 so I’m sure Murry is helping Az move down and gain more picks.

  10. If the Cardinals draft a player just because little Kyler wants them too .. they truly are lost.

  11. Word is that Johnson is better at Call of Duty than Kyler. He needs that in his life!

  12. Smart. Murry is worried they take his replacement at three. Im sure whomever is slotted to play that position is happy as hell to. “oh gee sorry Kyler, missed that block” “wow does it hurt it looks bad”

  13. Draft Johnson if you think he’s a stud Left Tackle that can protect whatever QB is there for the next decade. Do not draft him just because your QB says so, especially when that QB is probably 2 years away from looking for another team (if they can get out from the contract).

Uhh if Keim listened to Kyler Murray he might still have a job. Murray lobbied hard for Ceeddee Lamb, Creed Humphrey and Tristan Wirfs instead Keim drafted a bunch of off ball linebackers and lost his job because as soon as AZ had an injury riddled season across the board it exposed their lack of depth. But Blame Kyler right ?because the rest of the parrots are.

  15. Paris Johnson would help dramatically improve the OL this year with his ability to kick inside while they ease him into the NFL. He could play RT next year across from Josh Jones at LT once Humphries cap balloons. If they hit on a stud Center such as Joe Tippmann after drafting GMA guy like Johnson they’ll have a nasty OL.
They’re pretty set at tackle this year I think they’ll go defense and just focus on building their interior OL landing a center in RD3 and in RD2 taking someone like RT Dawand Jones or maybe Matthew Bergeron who can play T/G. Only way they go OT that high is if they trade back and their top Edges are off the board though they’ve been tied to some hood corners n Nolan Smith to do who knows ?

  16. Some team is going to overvalue a QB or JSN. Trade down to the 7-12 range and take one of the few OT that are worthy of first round picks. Protect your QB or you will be have wasted Murray and need to draft a QB in 2024 or 2025.

  17. So, the NFL is the new NBA? Players lobbying in public for signing/drafting other players?

If there was a time for collusion between owners, this is it.

You just named 3 wildly overrated players. I can only imagine the ego Murray would have adding in Ceedee Lamb on top of Hopkins and that bad trade, and all the fingerpointing that would come after that when it failed.

You seem to underrate maturity and hard work.

They not going to waste Murray. The main problem was just injuries last year . AZ was the most injured team by far and were injury riddled from week 1 plus DHOP put first 6WKs. The entire OL was on IR and their backups then when you compound the OL issues with a serious lack of receiving talent outside thanks to losing your top 4WRs to injury (Green was beyond washed statistically worst WR in NFL getting zero separation) and on IR top 3 never played ONE single game together all year, your top receiving TE landed on IR along with Hollywood the moment DHOP came back. Both of your starting RBs end up on IR. And they had the worst defense in the NFL littered with injuries.
That’s going to affect any QB, Murray has been carrying AZ since he was drafted and even with all of those injuries they almost beat numerous teams last season because of KM like the Eagles for instance last year. Murray wasn’t even bad last season he just wasn’t playing at an MVP top 5-10 caliber level like he was in 2020/21 seasons voted to the pro bowl both years 2 of his first 3YRs while also winning ROTY in 2019 n was an alternate for the PB that year.

With a good OL in front of him Murray will be back playing at a career MVP caliber level next season, he needs a decent OL and solid run game to be at his best and with AZ making building a top 10 caliber OL n run game their top priorities this off season Murray will be back playing at an MVP level with the weapons he has around him and AZ drafting more this weekend. On track to be back by week 1 he will be one of the top QBs again this next year .

This should sit well with DJ Humphries.
    ————————————————————————————

Why would it bother DJ Humphries at all?? It wasn’t directed toward him at all. Humphries cap hit BALLOONS to an insane untenable amount next year in 2024, he likely will be a cap casualty because of it unless his deal is restructured or reworked. Humphries also was out half of last season with a back injury.
Secondly if they were to draft Paris Johnson he would be in playing OG this year breaking him in slowly before sliding to RT most likely with Josh Jones at LT next season letting Humphries walk. Johnson is versatile, Murray wanting to draft another tackle is no dig at Humphries at all it means he can look into the future and see the writing on the wall beyond this year which Keim never could or he’d still have a job.
Arizona is going to have an excellent OL this next year with excellent depth just making a few moves like adding another OT in RD1 or 2 to begin developing possibly starting at OG though AZ has multiple very good OGs on the roster and drafting a center with one of their two 3rd rd picks owning picks 66, 96 and 105 most likely Joe Tippman, Luke Wypler or possibly Ricky Stromberg to plug in at Center day 1. They likely add a couple more picks in a trade.
With a healthy Murray behind a very good OL that can run block getting the run game going utilizing a lot of misdirection, roll outs, bootlegs, RPOs n Play Action allowing Murray to do what he does best which is throwing downfield as one of the best deep ball n intermediate passers in the NFL ( ranked top 3 as a deep passer each of his first 3 seasons n was the best in the NFL in 2021 statistically) utilizing the speed they have at WR who excel in the deep game. All of that depends on and starts up front and with a couple more linemen they’re going to have an excellent OL and will use one of their 3rds or pick 105 to draft a versatile power RB to pair up w/ Connor, Williams n 2nd YR Keontay Ingram having courted multiple backs on top 30 visits.

  21. Drafting the 2nd ranked OT in the draft @ pick#3 doesn’t seem too smart to me. Plus, I believe in the Jimmy Johnson idea of not drafting offensive lineman in the 1st round because they don’t score points for you. Right before last season started the Cowboys lost their starting left offensive tackle & everybody was going crazy. They replaced him without issue & didn’t miss a beat and went to the playoffs. Offensive lineman are overrated. Offensive lineman don’t have to be great, they just need to be competent. Joe Burrow & the Bengals went to the super bowl with what was considered the worst offensive line in the league. The Cardinals really should draft Murray’s replacement or trade down to get an extra 1st round pick for next year.

You seem to underrate maturity and hard work.
    —————————————————————————-

Maturity and hard work? You mean like walking into a dumpster fire of a situation in AZ coming off a 3-13 When KM was drafted and immediately massively improving the offense carrying Kingsburys horrific offense on his back (who was the least creative worst offensive PC in the NFL by a mile) who’s entire offense was dependent on him saying hey Murray go ball out n make me look good winning us the game.
Murray was OROY his 1st YR making the Pro Bowl as a rookie as an alternate, voted to the Pro Bowl in 2020 n 2021 almost winning MVP in 2020 (5K+YDs total n 37TDs) n 2021 when he ranked in the top 5 across the board in almost every passing statistically ranking as the best deep passer in the NFL PFFs highest deep ball pass grade 99.3, 3rd overall passing grade an elite 88.1, 7th overall ranked QB via PFF 85.5 in 21 and was 2nd most accurate QB in NFL Overall (69.5% CMP%) 2nd in CPOE +3.9 n 2nd highest ranked deep ball CPOE +12.9 (most deep pass yards 984 n completions of 20+YDs w/35)all while ranking 4th in YD/AVG ATT @7.9YDs. and Murray ranked in the top 3 deep passing each of his first 3YRs.
Oh and Murray set numerous records through his first 3 seasons Murray is just the 2nd QB EVER to pass for 10K+YDs n 70TDs while rushing for 1500+YDs n 20+TDs n his first 3YRs. Murray has passed for 60+TDs rushed for 20+TDs Faster than ANYONE in NFL History. Murray is the fastest to 10K+YDs passing n NFL History.

I’d call that working pretty freaking hard, maybe if you actually knew what you were talking about you’d know that. Murray’s teammates all believe he is a good leader, does he have things to work? Of course he’s 24 but these dumb narratives by people like yourself who just parrot back delusional talking points are laughable.

And since when is Tristan Wirfs, Creed Humphrey and CeeDee Lamb “wildly overrated” 😂??? That’s some clown 🤡 stuff there dude. Those players are amongst the best in the NFL at their positions and compare them to whom Keim drafted over the guys Murray wanted, try that bud. You were slamming Murray for wanting a player, well if they had listened a lil more to Murray in the past they wouldn’t of missed on so many 1st and 2nd round picks . That’s the point . AZ coulda had two elite young OL men at positions of need and drafted Ceedee Lamb to pair with Hollywood kept their 2nd round pick they traded for Hop and drafted maybe Johnathan Taylor or maybe Chase Claypool giving them Chase, Ceedee n Hollywood with two elite young OL men.
Had Keim listened to Murray not only would AZ MUCH better off Keim would still have a job after Kyler got him an extension in 21 he didn’t deserve. And those are just a few players KM publically lobbied for, Keim made the wrong choice because outside of a few select players his entire tenure was littered with bad decisions.

  23. The Ravens overpaid to get Beckham because Lamar Jackson wanted him. So not only will Murray get his WR and raise the ante by getting him his chosen offensive lineman, or the Cards are disrespecting him. The Ravens should be paying attention to the events in AZ. Once Murray got that guaranteed contract, he has the Cards management by the balls. He gets paid by just showing up and they have to kiss his ass to get him to play and not just go through the motions.

  24. Strawberry Shortcakes could play a mean game of peek-a-boo behind Paris…

  25. It’s a good thing there are never reports the week before the draft that are intended to misdirect or create confusion.

FWIW, Pat Kurwin did say on the radio that he thinks Paris Johnson will be taken in the Top 9 of the draft. Heard an interview with Johnson, sounds like he is real mature and had a good head on his shoulders. Cardinals do need a right tackle right now too – wouldn’t be surprised to see them draft Johnson and ask him to learn from Beachum and Hump occasionally slot in at RT.

Since Kyler got hurt, I assumed 2023 would be a tank year. I’ve also said that while it’s improbable, if they spent the entire draft on OL I wouldn’t complain. Their OL last year disappeared due to injuries and poor depth due to Keim. They need new blood in the OL.

And I agree, had they taken Creed Humphrey a few years back, who routinely gets praise from KC fans for the team’s success, perhaps they wouldn’t have been such a subpar OL last year.

  26. “I’d fade the public here. Is the same front office that put a homework clause in Kyler’s contract going to trust his diligent evaluation of the player vs. that of their scouts?”

If by the same you mean completely different… as they have a new GM, Front office and coaching staff…

    Then yes…you have a point.
