Eagles trade into No. 9 overall, select Jalen Carter

USA TODAY Sports

The Bears have once again moved down in this year’s draft.

Philadelphia moved up one selection to No. 9 overall and selected Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

Carter was thought of as perhaps the best overall player in the 2023 draft class. But off-the-field concerns likely led to him falling down to the ninth pick.

Nevertheless, Carter did not take any visits with teams outside of the top 10 — which clearly was a good call.

On Wednesday, Carter said that he thought the Eagles would take him if he were on the board at No. 10 overall. But Philadelphia didn’t let it get that far, making the trade up to go get him.

Carter recorded 6.0 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss in his 38 games at Georgia, helping the program win the last two CFP National Championship Games.

Chicago received a 2024 fourth-round pick in the deal.

  1. That’s a little confusing. There must have been other teams jockeying for that position.

I’m guessing the Eagles take Robinson if the Falcons didn’t, and this was their backup plan.

They’ll regret it eventually, but I guess an elite team picking this high wanted to get a little ruthless in defending their position.

  2. Stop with the Sapp & Donald comparisons. Let the kid play a few games first. Let’s see if he can actually make it thru a practice let alone a work out.

  3. Thanks to Carter and rosenhaus, everyone knew they were taking him so they had to waste a 4th rounder to make sure the Bears didn’t use that info to trade the pick to someone else that wanted him. He didn’t train for his pro day, didn’t take interviews with half the league, lied to police about a vehicular homicide, and still got exactly what he wanted. I’m sure he learned his lesson…

  4. Wow, the Eagles are dumb. Why would you trade the Bears anything for Criminal Carter?

Everyone knows Poles (former OL) is eyeing an offensive lineman!

    Eagles got worked!!

  5. This is the best possible outcome for both teams and for Carter. The Eagles are established winners with a ton of veteran player leadership especially on the DL. The Bears are growing leaders from scratch and building a strong locker room is Job 1. Carter may very well thrive in Philly but he absolutely would have failed in Chicago.

  6. I hope he takes care of the family of those two people who died. Least he could do for leaving the scene while they were dying.

  7. Another masterful move by Howie. What a great selection. Philly is the perfect place for Carter.

  8. Why did the Eagles trade up one pick, this is pointless. Hopefully this guy stays out of trouble, but the Eagles didn’t need to waste that trade, lol.

The Bears just fleeced the Eagles

If that’s what makes you feel better I guess. Eagles secured a monster D lineman and it cost them a fourth next year? I think they still have like 11 picks in next year’s draft.

Philly learned a few years ago that when your guy is there and you have the capital, you make it happen.

  10. This guy is a huge risk and the Eagles traded up when the Bears were not even thinking of drafting him.

LOL! The Eagles just wasted a trade for nothing, hahahahaha!

  11. I guess that’s Philly’s way of addressing Hargrave’s departure and the fact that Cox isn’t far from retiring. I think the Eagles had 12 picks in 2024 so giving up a 4th rounder to assure Chicago didn’t trade the pick with anyone else seems like an easy decision.

  12. The draft is such a crapshoot. Only thing different this year is its legal to lose your money betting on draft pics!

  13. I have a lot of respect for what the Eagles have done over the past few years. But with that said, did you actually go and pick the guy who was out flapping his gums about the fact you told him you were going to pick him?

I mean, that alone should’ve convinced you to walk away. What was to stop a team that had him highly rated from leapfrogging you?

This kid is an idiot. Wow.

I agree. The kid seems really immature. Philly better hope he grows up quickly. Boom or bust type of pick.

  15. Really: You obviously don’t know Howie. A 4th round pick next year. He will surely get it back by then and parley it into moving up or getting more value for this pick.

  16. Laughing at the naïveté here. You think other teams that wanted Carter weren’t looking to jump the Eagles by making a deal with Chicago!? The Eagles had to make that deal. Get a clue.

  17. Showed up 15 to 20 pounds overweight to his pro day….he and Jordan Davis will eat themselves out of the league in 4 yrs.

  18. To anyone asking why the eagles traded up one pick…it sounds like the bears office and eagles office have a good relationship somewhere. It sounds like they probably had a trade offer from another team further down and said “hey Eagles, this other team is trying to take it. We’re not taking him, do you want it before we give it to them?” Most likely

  19. After watching Carter’s post draft interview, I’m glad the Bears didn’t gamble on him. On the other hand, the Eagles are team that can afford that bet.

  20. Pete Carroll, who can handle any complicated person, drafted a 180 lb. corner instead of Carter. That tells you all you need to know.

  21. This pick was worth the risk. The upside is off the charts. He can’t discuss the incident. He is making a settlement with the families. It’s not criminal. It’s civil. They are trying to hold Jalen responsible. As we know from civil cases it doesn’t take much to sway in the favor of those seeking a settlement. Eagles have survived first round picks busts before. They got to the Super Bowl despite drafting Jalen Reagor and Andre Dillard. There is no question about the player’s ability. The Eagles locker room is loaded with leaders and veterans. He will have to toe the line. This isn’t like coming to the Raiders where it was like the Wild West the last few years.

  22. Kid in a young and a little immature but he’s going to grow up in Philadelphia quick .
