Patriots trade up to pick kicker Chad Ryland at No. 112

We’ve already had two kickers selected in the 2023 NFL draft.

The latest was Chad Ryland, selected by the Patriots in the fourth round with the 112th overall pick.

The Patriots liked Ryland so much that they traded up for him, sending the 120th and 184th picks to the Jets for the 112th.

Ryland spent four years at Eastern Michigan and then transferred to Maryland for his final season last year. He made 19 of 23 field goals, including going 3-for-6 from 50 yards and beyond.

Drafting a kicker is always a risk, as kickers are among the most inconsistent players in the sport and good college kickers often fizzle in the NFL. But yesterday the 49ers took Michigan kicker Jake Moody in the third round, and now the Patriots have drafted Ryland in the fourth.

  1. And still NO offensive help for Mac Jones. Did they really need to draft a safety from Sacramento in the third round? Like that guy wouldn’t have been available later?

  2. Easily the greatest draft pick in the history of the NFL. BB does it again. BB is a master and I will follow him.

  3. 4th round pick for a kicker? More of BB’s brilliance? HaHa HaHa HaHa HaHa HaHa HaHa

  4. I don’t think BB understands that he doesn’t have Tom Brady anymore and you can’t just put bums around Mac Jones and expect to win because…Mac Jones is also a bum

  5. Lot of GM’s in here. Surprised BB didn’t consult you morons before making a pick.

  6. I too had my football life destroyed by the Patriots dynasty of over 20 years of dominance and would like to troll on every article I can find, even if it’s about drafting a kicker.

  7. It’s a fascinating draft from the Pats. The offense was pretty clearly the unit that any outsider would have thought would be prioritized, but they haven’t addressed that at all.

They’ve gotten some great players, though. They seem to be thinking that they’ll be able to win defensive, ground & pound kinds of games. Or maybe they have faith that O’Brien can be the magic elixir for the O.

It’s counter-intuitive in today’s league. But Belichick always zags compared to the rest of the league.

  8. It’s too bad Cheatin’ Tom has ZERO winning seasons without elite coaching. I might have otherwise put him in my top 40 for greatest of all time. Then again maybe not. After all he was suspended for cheating…

  9. There goes Bill again. Playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. Picking a kicker in the fourth round. That’s funny. Maybe he can play receiver too.

  10. Hopefully this kicker works out better then Justin Rowhosser they took a couple years ago in the fifth round- he never played a snap and was cut after three years – He doesn’t have to play – he’s got to kick !!

  11. As the article points out, kickers are a crapshoot. Time will tell if this was smart or not, and it could turn out to be anything from genius to disaster. He did pick a good horse to bet on, but its still a total bet.

  12. and would like to troll on every article I can find, even if it’s about drafting a kicker.
    _____________
Sounds a lot like the fans of a team whose time has past.

  13. Two guards and a trade up for a Kicker today. The Kool aid drinking sheep must be dancing in the streets. Where’s the SBOWL next year?

  14. None of us knows anything, but we all talk like experts when critiquing a veteran NFL coach.

  15. Honestly the bus makes me feel better about the 49ers taking Moody in the 3rd, because he wasn’t gojng to be there in the 5th when they picked again. Rule #1 of the draft: If you think he’s your guy, get your guy and don’t get cute about it.

  16. This guy has a cannon for a leg. Nick Folk as a Patriot fan would know does not.

This is not Rohrwasser all over again. He has a real shot to make the team.

  17. “It’s dumb until you get a Justin Tucker and you are nearly automatic from 55 in.”

Justin Tucker was also one of, if not the most highly rated kicker to come out of.college in the last 20 years…

    This guy is not.

  18. urmom says:
    It’s dumb until you get a Justin Tucker and . . .
    ===

Justin Tucker is amazing, but he’s an outlier. Of the countless kickers out there, how many are as good as he is in that regard? Two? One? None?
Anything is possible, but odds are the Patrios could have landed Chad Ryland — or another kicker that could turn out to be just as good as him at the next level — later in the draft.
Bill is trying desperately to prove he’s still the smartest guy in the room. I used to buy it, but not any more. Not after the last three seasons.

  19. Where are the Cheater fans today? You know, the same ones that laughed at the Chiefs being “in Cap Hell” after Mahomes contract and trading Cheetah, and then proclaiming them a “One Year Dynasty”? A kicker. In the 4th round. When your team is CLEARLY a last place team in the East for at least the next 2 seasons. At the LEAST! Brilliant move, BB. Guess no one will be saying the Pats are in Cap Hell or a One Year Dynasty for the next decade. Live in the distant past, like Cowboy fans. Hey, maybe BB will draft a Punter before the end of the day.

  20. We went from a defensive ground and pound league to a passing league. This is just BB being ahead of the curve and can see it transition into a kicking league. Truly a chess/checkers move

  21. The top point scorers year after year and throughout history have been kickers. You need a good one to succeed. How many games were won or lost due to a made or missed field goal?

  22. Correction: that’s 3 guards and a trade up for a Kicker. A Kicker that’s erratic on kickoffs and 3/6 from 50+.

None of us know anything when critiquing an experienced NFL HC? perhaps. But, I can point to 3 or 4 NFL drafts where BB maybe shoulda listened to some of the criticism. Because it was well deserved. And now it’s taking years of scrambling to close the talent gap with the rest of the division and the AFC.

They have mental illness. They all probably did this when BB drafted Gostkowski, too.

  24. Lot of GM’s in here. Surprised BB didn’t consult you morons before making a pick.

  25. Ted, you make some valid points. I liked their first 3 picks. Didn’t know the linebacker/safety but his film looks good.

Surprised that a team with two solid guards drafted 2 and a third center/guard. I did note that there were runs on OTs before a number of their picks. That said, I think they had the draft capital to move.

Clearly, Bill plans to play tough D, turn the ball over on D, and run the football.

I am fine with the kicker he drafted. SF drafted the top one in the 3rd because Bill wanted him.

They are big, fast and athletic.

    Let’s play the games.

    *************************************************

Well, I have heard most had him going in the 4th round, and due to there being so many players of good but not great quality, it’s harder to tell where players will actually be drafted. There have been more then the usual surprises in this year’s draft. Look at what happened with Jake Moody, the Kicker from Michigan that many said the Patriots would be targeting. The 49ers decided to use one of their late 3rd rounder’s on him. he is accurate, with a big leg, having kicked in the cold weather, in front of 100k fans. His nickname is “Money.” The 49ers decided that if he is that good, barring injury, he can be their kicker for 2 decades, putting over 100 points a year on the board for the team. If that happens, is it a better use of the pick that another player that might contribute, but maybe doesn’t get a second contract? Or has a short career? The Pats were likely going to draft him in the 4th round. They got swooped and panicked. Ryland is not Moody and he does not have as big a leg. He can hit from beyond 50 yards but not consistently, and he has trouble placing the ball on kickoffs which is important to the coverage unit. He’s all over the place. There was no need to trade up. It’s like they were just looking to burn a pick, and not get swooped again. The 49er’s screwed them up on that pick. Hopefully Ryland turns into Adam Vinatieri 2.0 (at least he kicked in cold weather at Eastern Michigan and loves the challenge of bad weather (but again, he was in Michigans back yard and they never grabbed him). The Pat’s got swooped a few times in this draft. They got abused in round 4 by NO and Philly. I said last night (strenuously) that they needed to trade up with Chi and get the first pick in round 4. Instead, NO did it and got Old Dominion OL Saliveri and then Philly swooped Kelee Ringo two spots ahead of them. Ringo is a CB that could have converted to safety like McCourty did. He’s 6’2 205, and was rated a 2nd rounder that dropped to the 4th round. He’d have been a good pick unless they think Mapu can become a dynamic Safety for them. He looks like he could be Rodney Harrison 2.0. Instead they got Jake Andrews from Troy. Not terrible, but not what they wanted. At least he was coached by a guy that used to coach Patriots o-lineman a couple seasons ago before he was forced to walk the plank over a mandate to inject himself with a foreign substance; Cole Popovich. (Another area where Kraft showed his true colors). They then picked up Sidy Sow also from Eastern Michigan, and IOL that they had interest in. Perhaps they had him graded the same as Saliveri….whatever. Then they got Antonio Mafi, another IOL from UCLA in the 5th. Who says they aren’t getting players for Mac Jones? LOL. You do have to protect him and they have contracts expiring in 2024. What does this mean for/say about Chasen Hines, Bill Murray, Kody Russey, and James Ferentz? Andrew Stueben is at Tackle and seemingly has no competition. Cajuste’s contract is also expiring in 2024, as is Trent Browns. They have Riley Reiff on a 1 year deal @34 years old, Connor McDermott until 2025, and Calvin Anderson until 2025. So they restocked the IOL’s again, and left the Tackle spot as is, with just about everyone’s contract expiring in 2024 (Kraft is set up to make a major change in 2024 if he doesn’t like what he sees).

The Patriots then trade a 6th round pick down to pick up a 7th rounder which says there aren’t too many players left that they like. I’m surprised they haven’t picked up Jaelyn Duncan from Maryland. a late 3rd/early 4th round graded Tackle prospect. They may take another Michigan Tackle, Ryan Hayes, who is rated as a late 6th rounder. Maybe they take one of the Oregon Tackles that Adrian Klemm coached last year.

AT Perry, Kayshon Boutte, and Ronnie Bell are still available @WR.
DeWayne McBride, Duece Vaughn, and Mohammed Ibrahim are available @RB.

We’ll see how they finish this one out. More will be revealed. Quickly.

  27. This guy is also money on XP, can hit FGs from long range and is very good at kicking into touchbacks. We all saw in the season finale what can happen when you don’t have a kicker who can do that.

Don’t know if they needed to trade up for him but I don’t see why I should have a problem with the player. Folk is near the end of the road and it showed last season.

  28. That said, I think they had the draft capital to move.

This is my main point TL. I don’t have a problem with the 1rst 3 players picked. They may all turn out well. They needed to draft a K, probably a punter too. But, they had the capital to move anywhere on the board on day 2. Their 2 starting OTs on on the last year of their contracts. The 2 starting TEs also. Their WR corp is mediocre. But, there was nobody at those need positions worth going to get? While other teams were moving around trying to hit home runs? Sorry, I just don’t see the plan. I didn’t see it with the coaching choices they made before they threw away 2022. I didn’t see it when they had no plan when Brady walked and ended up signing CNewton in June before they threw away 2020. And then there’s the big FA signing offseason. And the bad drafts. I’m off the ‘In Bill We Trust’ train.

  29. A major upgrade in coaching, an upgrade at TE and WR and more depth up front. Somehow that’s not giving Mac Jones any support. 🥴

    Ok then.

4th round pick for a kicker? More of BB’s brilliance? HaHa HaHa HaHa HaHa HaHa HaHa
    ——
Yeah it’s not like Steven Gostkowski an excellent kicker in his 14 year career with the Patriots was picked in the 4th round oh wait yes he was. BUt 4tH rOuND piCK fOrA KiCkER??? 🤪

  31. Well, at least they picked up Kayshon Boutte with that pick, but with extra 6th rounder’s, they might have gotten Duncan and Boutte if they played it better.

They need to grab Zack Kuntz from Old Dominion (TE) with their next pick.

  32. I don’t think BB understands that he doesn’t have Tom Brady anymore and you can’t just put bums around Mac Jones and expect to win because…Mac Jones is also a bum

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

He may have learned from last 3 seasons that he had no clue who would be good, so now he is back to his old way of building offense :

    Finding gold among rocks.

That is, he threw some later round picks, castoffs and old WR to Brady, and let Brady figure out who would be good, and he just laid back and collected credits from his fans. (The reason he thought he didn’t need Brady.) Not sure if he has realized that it was Brady who turned those rocks to gold.

  33. Belichick hit big on Stephen Gostkowski in 2006 and missed on Justin Rohrwasser in 2020. Folk is getting any younger. He was the second best kicker in college last year behing Jake Moody who went in the third round. This isn’t the deep draft, so drafting kickers early probably makes more sense this year then in other years.

  34. Tha Pats may need to trade up to #203 with LV if they want to get the last TE with upside ( Zack Kuntz) before the Jets take him at #204.

  35. He DID DRAFT A PUNTER! LOL!!!! Teams that are STACKED at every position and are SB contenders can afford these picks. Not a team that finished last, hasn’t won a playoff game since TB left and won’t even sniff the playoffs for years. BB may have been a “genius” while he had TB but not so much since. I’m sure Pats fans WISH they were facing “Cap Hell” due to a Dynasty creating QB! LOL!

  36. The Pats got Jones some bonafide NFL coaches. How magnanimous of them. Not even a member of BB’s family. What a 1rst class organization. Upgrade at WR? We shall see. Gesicki is an upgrade. On a 1 year contract. Depth up front? They needed a C because DAndrews are getting old. 2 additional guards? When they spent a 1rst rnd pick on a guard last year? Please.

  37. Tom Brady is nothing but a nice little system QB with a weakling little arm, once suspended for cheating, who proved he can’t win without elite coaching and hasn’t won a single ring where he was the reason why they won rather than his teammates. There’s nothing else to discuss about that guy. He is what he is. Let’s talk about good football players for a change.

  38. If Cincy does not trade up from the bottom of the 6th, Kuntz should be there at #210.

  39. 2 additional guards? When they spent a 1rst rnd pick on a guard last year? Please.
    —-
And then Strange gets hurt. Then what?

  40. The Pats got Jones some bonafide NFL coaches.
    —-
Last season was a coaching blunder. They corrected that this season. I expect a much better offense just by that move alone. Much closer to the one that got them to the playoffs the year before.

JJSS is a better receiver than Meyers. Upgrade.

Due to age and injury, the Patriots special teams performed poorly with the exception of Nick Folk’s consistency inside the 50 yd line. It was costing them games. They had to do something, especially with punter Jake Bailey struggling with injury and suspension. They had given Baily a nice extension, and it went completely sideways. They picked up a punter off the street and it was a disaster. Again, they had to do something if they don’t want whatever gains they make to be negated by Special Teams gaffes. On a side note, they have loaded up on players that play special teams that are demons. I expect their special teams to be once again, great, and it does make a difference, especially when your QB is not Top 5 and you need to play the field position game more than others.

  42. So no Zack Kuntz. Demario Douglas is a speedster with moves @WR. He can score from anywhere. Small but effective. Played against decent competition. Not bad. I’d still like that TE though.

  43. Smith Schuster 2022: 16 gms 933 yrds 3 TDs with Mahomes, bringing baggage.
JMyers 2022: 14 gms 804 yrds 6 TDs in a terrible offense great teamate.

KFerenz is the Pats IOL backup. #next

  44. And as I predicted above, though it comes at pick 220, the NYJ’s took Zack Kuntz…. SMH. He wasn’t going to last until the Pat’s next pick in round 7. Maybe they should have flipped a future late round pick to move up and grab him. He’s 6’7″, 255 lbs, with some speed and athleticism. He’s a good downfield receiver. He could back up Gesicki until next year. Oh well. Hopefully he doesn;t pan out because I don’t want to see him making plays against us 2-3 times per year.

How many games into his career did it take for Meyers to even score a TD? 40? Yeah that guy is amazing. Right.

    JJSS is better.

  46. great teamate.

So was Cam Newton. What does that have to do with performance?

  47. Stats don’t lie. And Smith Schuster is on his 3rd team because he’s been a pain. He also had some chemistry with Jones. We shall see. Certainly no slam dunk.

Newton was a great teamate that couldn’t play anymore. That’s why he’s outta the league. Smith Schuster is a selfish diva.

  48. Smith Schuster is a selfish diva.
    —-
Why because of the TikTok thing? When has he been selfish?

  49. Most good kickers will get you 10 points plus a game…..avg ones will get you a measly 5 or 6 if they miss FG or PATs. I’ll invest in a good kicker to insure Ia few extra games a season ( and get my team into the playoffs).

  50. I believe most Ks and Ps in the NFL weren’t drafted. They’re free agents not drafted and then signed after the Draft. But go ahead, Pats fans, in thinking these 2 will cover up all holes your last place team with an average QB have. Priceless. You’re the same geniuses that crowed the Chiefs were a “One Year Dynasty” and THEN in “Cap Hell” after Mahomes contract and Hill being traded. I think I’d rather have a 7th Round RB who ran for over 1000 yards and a TD in the SB and another 7th Round DB that was key in same SB than a Punter and Kicker. But what do I know? Except my team has been in 3 of last 4 SBs winning 2 while the Pats Dynasty is in the rear view mirror of a dusty car driven by a “genius” who hasn’t won a playoff game since Giselle’s ex left.

  51. Took50, your team is no more the Chiefs than mine is. Who do you think you’re fooling?

Where is he saying it does?

  54. took50, you actually think Belichick can’t effectively pick kickers? He went 19 years with two placekickers. When Gostkowski got hurt in 2019 Bill relied on veteran Nugent to fill in but settled on Folk who beat out rookies and was very consistent, but couldn’t effectively kick over 50yards nor kick off. In short, 3 kickers over 23 years with the guy he drafted in 2006 being outstanding until injury ended his Patriots career in 2019. So, picking a placekicker in the 4th round has outstanding historical precedent.
