Report: Vic Fangio “probably” would be Eagles defensive coordinator, but for Jonathan Gannon tampering

After a report emerged that Eagles consultant Vic Fangio was poised to become the defensive coordinator in Miami, questions emerged as to whether he’d succeed Jonathan Gannon in Philly, if/when Gannon left.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the tampering shenanigans involving the Cardinals and Gannon resulted in Fangio not sticking around.

“The interesting part about it would be this, I think it impacted a lot of peoples’ lives,” Schefter said in an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic. “Vic Fangio, for example, probably would not have taken the Dolphins defensive coordinator job and would be the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia today if everything was on the up and up. And so it didn’t just impact the Cardinals and their job with Jonathan Gannon, it impacted others as well. . . . So I think that are certain people that might not be pleased with the way everything went down.”

Schefter didn’t elaborate on the connection between the Gannon tampering and Fangio moving on. Apparently the Eagles didn’t realize Gannon would be leaving before the door closed on keeping Fangio around.

While Schefter tiptoed around saying it, he seems to think this thing was a bigger mess than we’ve all been led to believe.

“I think everybody knows, in any line of work, if they’re on an expiring contract or they’re under consideration, they still have responsibilities to their employer to finish the job the right way,” Schefter said. “In this particular case, I just think the Eagles weren’t comfortable with the information that they learned and Jeffrey [Lurie] brought it up to Michael Bidwill, and this is where the organizations wound up.”

The problem is that the entire ordeal ended up being swept under the rug, with the goal of minimizing any attention paid to the situation, in the hopes that no one will fully explore the rabbit hole. As the NFL often does in such situations, the goal is to plug it with cement and move on.

  1. Fangio is the man. Too bad Philly. Maybe you would have gotten that 2nd half stop in the Bowl if Fangio was DC.

  2. The Super Bowl loser very rarely – if ever – gets back to the Bowl the next year. I can’t even remember the last time it happened….Buffalo?

  3. Gannon does not look good. Bidwill looks worse. Bidwill is the next owner that needs to go.

  4. The punishment did not fit the crime. Cost them a SB (potentially).

    Defies common sense

  5. As a Bills fan, now i hate the Cardinals even more. Because, straight up, the Cardinals are one of the worst run franchises in the NFL, and theyre leaving a very murky wake for the rest of the league to swim in

  6. The Cardinals are and have always been a loser organization so it’s just fitting that they would violate tampering rules just to hire a head coach who’s just as big a lose as they are.

  7. Gannon is a rat. Cost the Eagles a Super Bowl and a DC. The Cardinals will fire him within two years and multiple instances of dishonesty and backstabbing will be leaked on PFT. Rinse, repeat.

  8. I think I can speak for everyone by saying….
Every Dolphins fan is certainly glad that it happened! 🐬

  9. Not quite sure what to make of this story. The Eagles knew that Gannon was as Howie put it a “rental” for the Eagles. If they really wanted Fangio they would have found a way to make it work.

  10. Meh. When it comes to employer-employee relationships, loyalty is a one way street. Every team wants a better coach, and the only reason any coach keeps his job is either the team isn’t convinced it can land a better one, or the current coach has a big buyout. Every team does everything it thinks it can get away with.

  11. “The problem is that the entire ordeal ended up being swept under the rug, with the goal of minimizing any attention paid to the situation, in the hopes that no one will fully explore the rabbit hole. As the NFL often does in such situations…”

Bingo. And we have to stop allowing it. The NFL is one organization where I wouldn’t mind a true and honest Congressional lead investigation, that would get journalists free reign to look into the NFL as the NFL is shady yet takes on A LOT of public taxpayer funding despite masking its self is a private business. It won’t happen but something needs to change

  12. “This thing was a bigger mess than we’ve all been led to believe…” All the more reason coaching changes shouldn’t take place until after the Super Bowl when all teams’ seasons are over.

  13. Now we have to have Fat Matt Patricia and his stupid pencil that won’t write on his laminated play sheet. Thanks Gannon, cost us the SB and Fangio…glad you and your terrible shell defense is gone, enjoy your 3 win season in Arizona ya bum!

  14. I’m not quite sure what the Gannon tampering has to do with Fangio not taking the job? Like… why would that alter your decision to stay in Philly vs go to Miami? I don’t see what one has to do with the other.

  15. Okay so why aren’t they investigating it with the same vigor of tampering as the miami case when they stole our draft picks? Hmmmm.

  16. This is just another great example of how stupid and terrible Stephen Ross was/is at being an owner. Other owners tamper throughout the league, but they are not so brazen to get the NFL to do an investigation let alone handout penalties.

  17. This entire thing stinks to high heaven. Gannon is such an overrated snake. Horrible coaching hire. I can’t believe the Eagles were able to get rid of him and move up in the third round.

  18. Unsupported nonsense. If Fangio needed things to be “on the up and up”, why did he join a team docked a first round pick for tampering?

  19. The situation is really just a contract dispute, not a crime. It isn’t required to be a public record and like all civil lawsuits a settlement is always the favored outcome. The two involved parties – the Eagles and the Cardinals – along with the League sorted it out to everyone’s satisfaction.

Not everything is a conspiracy or dirty dealing.

  20. They seem to be saying that in the biggest game of his life, Gannon was distracted and didn’t perform or prepare appropriately. To me, that seems like a good thing that he is no longer with their team.

The other stuff just seems like sour grapes regarding Fangio.

  21. Funny how Philly fans blame Gannon for the Super Bowl, but conveniently forget the horrible officiating that ignored a pass interference call just before halftime that would have given Philly the ball in the red zone with about 1:40 left. Then in the fourth quarter, the same officials actually make the same PI call – but in favor of the Chiefs, to help them advance into the red zone.
But surely, yes, this is all Gannon’s fault.

Not the next year but Denver lost to Seattle in 2013 and won it all in 2015 (but lost to Indy in the divisional in 2014)

  23. Hate is inevitable. You all know where the Eagle is at, your team, not so much.

  24. This makes no sense. If Fangio had known that Gannon was getting the Arizona job, he would have stayed in Philadelphia. The only way he could have known that would happen is if the communication was made before the Super Bowl. If there had been no tampering, no one would know there would be a DC opening and Fangio would have gone to Miami. Schefter should explain how the tampering caused Fangio to go to Miami instead of throwing out an assertion that appears ridiculous.

In the week after the NFCCG, Gannon went on record as saying that he was staying in Philly for another year. At that point, Fangio took the job with Miami. But this was also the same week when Gannon was taking calls from AZ. With the knowledge of the tampering, Schefter is suggesting that Gannon covered it by announcing his intention to stay in Philly…whereas if he had just responded to the phone call from AZ by going to the Philly brass and saying nothing more than “look, I’d like to pursue head coaching jobs after the Chiefs game…” then Fangio probably would’ve stayed in house. Does that make sense?

  26. I’m not quite sure what the Gannon tampering has to do with Fangio not taking the job? Like… why would that alter your decision to stay in Philly vs go to Miami? I don’t see what one has to do with the other.

    ——————————

Fangio was heir apparent to Gannon last year. In Philly almost the whole season. Fangio was given the Miami offer but Gannon lied and said he’d stay so Vic went south. AFTER THAT Gannon took off to Arizona, leaving Philly high and dry.

  27. One of throngs I really like about social media is when the actual truth is exposed. Out there on the internet the two blown defensive plays that ultimately coast is the Eagles a victory could HAVE BEEN PREVENTED if Gannons head was in the game. Really a cool setup the Chiefs did and EVEN did a practice play to see if it would work. Gannon cost us the game along with our terrible punter who shanked that punt .
