Brandon Beane glad Josh Allen plans to be “a little bit smarter” when running this season

Bills quarterback Josh Allen said recently that he’s learning that he needs to adapt and change his style of play as he gets older and that one adaptation will be to “get down, slide and live to fight another down” on some of his rushing attempts.

During an appearance on The Jim Rome Show, General Manager Brandon Beane says it’s his job to make sure that Allen is getting the protection and targets he needs in order to stay in good condition throughout the season. Beane also acknowledged that there are going to be moments when Allen has to go for it before adding that he’s happy to hear the quarterback thinking more strategically about when he’s going to take risks in the future.

“Don’t let him fool anybody,” Beane said. “When it’s time to make a big play or we have a gotta have it moment and he doesn’t see an opportunity to throw it, he’s gonna tuck it and run. I’m just glad he’s at least open to being a little bit smarter and picking his spots maybe a little bit more than he did last season.”

Allen has been too successful as a runner to think that the team is ever going to stop using that skill as part of their offense, but it will be interesting to see how different things really look once the team is playing games again this fall.

  1. If Allen had the weapons around him like Burrow and Mahomes I doubt he would have needed to run as much. Hopefully, he has better weapons this season.

  2. If he’s not careful, he’ll be Cam Newton in a few years – worn out and broken. Allen still has an arm. I’d like to see him play in this league another dozen years but he won’t at this rate.

  3. The Cam Newton comparisons are not apt, imo.

They’re really completely different QB’s. Nothing against Newton – of whom I’m a fan – but Allen would still be a top 5 QB in the league if he stopped running altogether.

Allen did hurt his arm last year – in the pocket, I’d add – but his injury history is pretty lean for a guy who everyone says will have a short career because of the punishment he’s taking. He has barely missed any games since he became a starter.

Cam Newton only missed less games due injuries on the football field (he missed 2 games after breaking his back in an auot accident) before the age of 30 than Allen already has. And I don’t think that he is a top 5 QB if he stopping running. When they need a play it’s usually an Allen Run.

  5. This thread is incontrovertible evidence that some Bills fans are delusional.

This comment shows you have not watched the Bills be a top 1-2 team the past few years. What has beens are you rooting for, Jet’s, Pat’s, Miami. Please.

  7. The top 1-2 teams are the Super Bowl champs and the team they beat. Apparently, delusional is much too generous.

  8. I’m gonna guess that the fans who think Allen is going to have a short career are same ones who thought he was a bust a few years ago.

The Bills are a top contender until proven otherwise. Nothing “delusional” about that.
