Lamar Jackson deal sprang from offer Ravens made before 2022 season

During his Wednesday appearance on #PFTPM, Ravens G.M. Eric DeCosta was asked which contract had more of an impact on the contract to which quarterback Lamar Jackson agreed last week — the Deshaun Watson deal or the Jalen Hurts deal.

“Oh, man. That’s a good question,” DeCosta said. “I mean, I think they were both kind of hovering overhead different ways. I mean, obviously, the Watson deal was really something that the media focused on quite a bit and was fascinated by any impact that would have on the negotiation with Lamar. And then I think that the Hurts deal, you know, it hit before we got the Lamar deal done.”

DeCosta ultimately pivoted to a different contact as the key — the one the Ravens offered to Lamar last year.

“I would say that, you know the contract that we did with Lamar is not that dissimilar from the contract that we offered Lamar in September,” DeCosta said. “And I think that contract actually had the biggest impact of the whole thing, because we felt that the time that that was a strong contract offer. We had a small window to get that done. Lamar had put a self-imposed end of negotiation date before the season started. We felt like we were getting close to a deal at that point, but we ran out of time and so we decided to kind of revisit that contract. We augmented and added some money in different ways to that contract and fortunately we were able to get the deal done. But when we compare the two deals, the deal from September and the deal that we offered Lamar that Lamar accepted, you know the framework was there with that deal back in September and allowed us to get to this point.”

We’ve seen the differences from September to April, in the limited details that have surfaced. Instead of five years and $250 million, it’s five years and $260 million. Instead of $175 million guaranteed for injury at signing, it’s $185 million.

This also implies that the full guarantee at signing will be more than $133 million, and that the practical guarantee (the full guarantee vesting after one season) will be more than (as PFT reported last month) $168 million.

So what changed to get Jackson to change his position on the structure the Ravens offered last year?

“You’d have to ask Lamar that question,” DeCosta said. “You should try to get him on your show. I don’t know, I wouldn’t want to speak for Lamar. That’s a good question. I think just from our perspective problem solving we’re going to just kind of keep trying to solve these problems, keep offering deals, trying to keep the relationship alive. And we felt like it was our time last week to try to do it again and fortunately we got the deal done.”

Reporters will have a chance to ask Lamar that question later today, when he and DeCosta and coach John Harbaugh meet with the media for the first time since they reached their new contract.

  1. Same offer? It’s 10M more over 5 years. I’m not going to quibble about Symantec’s, but that’s $2M a year. That’s actually significantly different in real money. Good for Lamar.

I’ve never heard of a company named “Semantec”. What do they do?

  3. Who cares? Sometimes it takes months to make major life decisions. Did Lamar fold? Dude is a multi-millionaire, regardless. Highest paid contract in NFL history. Let’s move on to the next one… Next top-flight QB up! Playoff record don’t matter, injuries don’t matter and tweets don’t matter. Does your GM think you have the potential to win a Super Bowl? That’s all that matters.

The interest earned on the signing bonus (well over Wilson’s $125Mil) would’ve been more than $10Mil total difference had he signed in ’22 vs. now. Jackson actually LOST money by waiting.

  7. What changed? Lamar realized there was no market for him. He’s won one playoff game and been injured the last two seasons. Once his legs are gone, he will have nothing left. He struggles against top-tier teams because they are happy to force him to throw the ball and when they get to him they dont go for sacks. They keep him in front of them knowing that he can only beat you with his legs.

He said it’s “not dissimilar.” He’s talking in terms of years and general structure. Yes, this offer had more guaranteed dollars and total dollars than their offer last summer, but the Ravens didn’t have to make a fully guaranteed offer.

    Also, the word is “semantics.”

  10. The media blew up the situation, like they do with anything that they can get their hands on. In the end, Lamar and the Ravens got what they wanted which is what matters. On to the next story…

So if Jackson can only beat you with his legs do you say the same about Hurt, Allen and Herbert? Or are you just making things up that are not based in reality?

  12. Not bad for a glorified running back with no agent. Never listen to the naysayers. Good for Lamar.

  13. Would seem to me (especially with today’s high inflation) that all Lamar lost was a year’s earnings (he could have had substantially the same deal a year ago and already banked a massive amount of money. And he’d be in year 2 of the deal. Of course, if injuries derail his career, he’s probably better to have waited and lived off the $24 mil last year (and have guaranteed years out farther). Body breakdown possibility probably increases with age.

  14. Guess he didn’t need an agent. Lamar played his leverage well. Well done sir.

  15. This is lame, there are clearly people on this forum who are Lamar’s family or something.

The reality is the Ravens changed their whole offense for Lamar, and he has never gotten to the Championship Game. He was taken 32nd. He got an MVP, but that was as much about the offense catering to him as anything else. Who cares about Herbert, Allen, Hurts, etc, how many SB’s do they have?

He got the money, now he has to win us a SB. Is he as good as Joe Flacco? We will see, Joe (and Boldin, Reed, et al) got us a SB. Can he do it? If not, regardless of the money, he will only be in the Hall of the Very Good at best. The whole contract saga will taste very bitter to me if he doesn’t make it.

I want him to succeed, but the time is now, and no more excuses, injuries, etc. Go Ravens!

  16. What no one seems to discuss is the amount of money he lost by not signing in 21 or 22. He played the last 2 years on his rookie deal. If he would have signed the deal last year that is materially the same as his current deal, he would have made almost ~40m more last year. He will never be able to recoup that lost money. On top of that, if he signed last year, he would already be negotiating his next contract next year.

  17. Had LJ had an agent this would have been done sooner. He also would have been advised to go to Cincy even though hurt to win the PR battle. Lots of us locals hated the way he handled the last 2 seasons. Add to that an agent can get spokesperson deals that Mom’s just can’t. So yeah, he doesn’t need one.

  18. So basically Jackson accepted the same offer with an adjustment for inflation.

You’re kidding, correct? Joe on his best day ever is nowhere close to Lamar.

This changing the offense talking point is getting old. All good coaching staffs modify their offensive and defensive schemes to fit the abilities of their players, especially the quarterback.

The travel to the game before the Bengals game aggravated Lamar’s leg injury. Do really think that he should have suffered a further setback just to show up for a game he wasn’t playing in?

Do you really care if Lamar lost 40 mil or gained 40 mil? I sure don’t. First, the Ravens did not come to him 2 years ago, they kept him on the cheap, and if so, the deal would have been a lot smaller, so who knows if he would have gained or lost? He has a boat load now, so if you really care about if he lost millions on top of the millions he has, you’ve got issues.

Money doesn’t buy championships. Signing Lamar simply gives their best chance. This roster is still far from overwhelming. It takes more than a QB no matter how good the QB. With Jackson we have a shot without him we didn’t. Flacco had a great 4 game run but that was a complete team that Ozzie Built that probably would have more rings with a better QB. Decosta has not shown that he can build a team like Ozzie Newsome could. He is under the most pressure. Jackson has shown that he is more than capable of winning big but it takes an entire organization.

  23. Im just happy Ravdns got that Running back sign and we don’t need to hear every reporter talking about that Cam Newton 2.0 but Newton the Patriots player not Panthers one,i guess Ravens didn’t learn with the Flacco contract they messed up again they will be so mad on his 2nd year of that contract shen he be playing like Rusell Wilson Broncos first season, they should of tried to get Anthony Richardson and traded Lamar for draft picks they over paid for a running back who can’t throw the ball

  24. Got a pretty good feeling that a couple Jackson apologists will mysteriously disappear by Week 5, when OBJ is injured, and Lamar is crudely addressing bloggers.
