Brandon Beane: Bills want to avoid going all-in for one year and then having a tear down

Bills General Manager Brandon Beane says he’s building for sustained success in Buffalo, and not a team with a one-year peak followed by a deep valley.

Beane told Jim Rome that tactics like trading future draft picks or pushing significant cap space to future years come with a price, and the Bills don’t want to pay that price.

“There are some moves that we could do that would say we’re all in for this year and then have a tear down,” Beane said, via the Buffalo News. “We’ve been diligent with the cap to try to avoid that type of situation. It’s not easy, especially when you have a top 10 quarterback, great receiver, Tre White, Von [Miller] and some of these guys. Ultimately, we think we’ve got a plan to continue to go for it year after year and hopefully we can find a way to pull that title home for Buffalo sooner rather than later.”

The Rams, who won the Super Bowl after the 2021 season but collapsed in 2022, are an obvious example of a team that went all-in and then started tearing it down. The Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl this year, are an example of a team built for sustained success. Beane clearly would rather follow the Chiefs’ model.

  1. How about winning something of meaning first, and getting to the big show before you start talking about “sustained success”. The Bills haven’t done anything but loose in the playoffs, but I guess some organizations consider that a success

  2. People will remember the Bucs and Rams. If they don’t win a Super Bowl, they won’t even be the most interesting team in franchise history since the 90s Bills went to four straight, and that’s obviously not going to happen in this era. I’m afraid their current window is already shut, but we’ll see this year.

  3. Yea it’s been tried a bunch of times it’s only worked once, always ends in a total rebuild and some 3 win seasons and now everyone thinks that’s the way to build a team.

  4. Sounds good but you need a QB to sign a contract making less than the league average for 10 years to do it like the Chefs.

  5. and that’s the conundrum, gotta get the lombardi in order to justify going all in, rams were handed their trophy because of the stl fiasco and the owners wanting to “pay back” DB without it coming out of their own pockets. so it worked for them with some manipulation, i doubt the league would do the same favor for the bills

  6. Being a Bridesmaid every season means your drafting at the bottom of the draft every season. That being said unless you get lucky the only way to move the needle for your team is through free agency. Unfortunately, that expensive. The Eagles might be an example for Beane to study.

  7. Let’s be real .
If a team had Pat Mahomes they don’t have to go all in for one year.

The Rams has a great team and an ok QB, and did have to go all in .

The Bills will remain good, but will need some luck to win a SB.

  8. It’s a little too late for that given the Bills are already in cap hell.

  9. You would think the fanbase of a team that’s never won a superbowl in their 63 year existence would want them to do anything to win

  10. One AFC championship game appearance since Josh Allen came to town. Long suffering Bills’ fans deserve more than that from Beane while he milks the spectacular success of that one draft pick.

  11. That’s been the Cowboy’s strategy for the last 28 years and counting…

  12. The Bills can do it their way. As a Ram fan, I’m appreciative of Les Snead for not pitching that party line.

The Rams recognized that their competitive window was open when Aaron Donald was in his prime.

They didn’t want to have a generational defender on their team and their lasting legacy that they were never able to capitalize on that and win a Lombardi.

So they added as many talented players as they could find. They didn’t waste those draft picks, they traded for talent that could get them over the mountain. Take a playoff team and make it a championship one.

And if they had to be unconventional in doing that, so be it.

  13. IMO, it’s better to contend every year than to go for broke and be broken. The sports media are enamored with ALL IN, which is like feast or famine. I’d rather have two meals a day forever than oscillate between feasting or starving intermittently.

  14. Hitting on the draft.l
    That’s how it’s done today.
A team has 5 years of controlled pay, period.
Get the great young QB.. Then, hit on drafted talent, and you win.
One blown 1st rounder, and it spells financial problems..right Jets?

  15. Bills could win a SB next year, who knows.

But lining up to dunk on the Rams after they won a title….

Rams didn’t let their fear of the “valleys” dissuade them from trying to reach the peak.

  16. Knew the Bills were cooked when Von Miller went down. Well, he’s one yr older & they took a TE that may be marginally better than Knox. Don’t think a fifth round WR will help much either. Probably going to settle into a 10 or 11 win team now, as Jets and Miami are improving.

  17. ‘pushing significant cap space to future years’ Isn’t that exactly what he has done? Allen – this year cap $18 million, next year $47 million. Diggs – this year $14 million, next year $27 million. Von Miller – this year $8 million, next year $24 million. I suspect he would like to unload Tre White, but it would be a $26 million dead money cap hit.
    Who is he fooling?

  18. You don’t have to trade away all your firsts to win a Super Bowl.

But they signed Von Miller to a huge FA deal, Miller being one of the pieces the Rams added to win their Super Bowl. Brandon Beane can’t now act like the Rams approach was entirely without merit.

  19. Super Bowl right the Bills windows have closed the dolphins and jets have passed them

    ////
But….it did work. I would take that one SB win in my lifetime and then 20 years of garbage. Because I would always have that one win.

  21. Bills fan concur – but at some point you need to make an attempt especially when our starting QB is getting older and our top shelf players are at the stage in their careers where they miss a step. I’m very curious how well the “all in” will work with the Jest’s – not too concerned though because it’s Rodgers. KC has been able to manage without a revolving door of “buying” rental players.

  22. It’s the better way to go. If you go all in, you had better be 100% you’re going to get that title. And you can never be.

It worked for the Rams, but what if Stafford got hurt that year?

I’d rather be in the mix every year for as long as Allen is QB. You need some luck to get a title, and one of these years it just might go the Bills way.

Also – Maine doesn’t have a football team, or a pro team in any of the 4 major sports.

  23. Coming from a team that lost 4 straight Super Bowls, that’s strange. Every team has a winning window, better do something to get them over the top while you still can. Look at the Packers. They had Rodgers all these years and they were in the hunt almost every year but they never made the major investment to bring home the bacon.

  24. The Bills are already there. They have a championship type team, and elite QB, and a great coach. They’ve been knocking on the door for the past couple seasons, and their young QB is still improving. They’ve built their team the right way, and they should continue on with their successful plan. Most other NFL teams would love to be in the Bills’ situation. They’re a top 3 or 4 team. It’s like with the PGA tour. One guy doesn’t win every tournament, but the best players are usually in contention. A guy that loses the Masters by one stroke doesn’t need to fix anything. He’s right there.

  25. Signing Von Miller seems to say otherwise.

In any event, you need to go for it all, no SBs means you are not successful, period.

  26. Good for him, I say. Yes, the Rams went all-in and won the Super Bowl…but, it wasn’t garaunteed. How bad would they have looked if they had lost to the Bengals. Or worse, if they had lost to the 49ers in the playoffs. They would have been the poster-child of ways to ruin your franchise. I would rather have more than just one opportunity to win big vs one lone shot and spend however many years digging out of a hole.

It wasn’t about an investment. It was about not having a good GM.

BB built 2 dynasties with Brady. Rodgers and Brees had awful GMs.

  28. If he wants to follow the Chiefs model, he needs to be willing to move on from players who get too expensive and he needs to hit a lot more than he misses on draft picks. The Chiefs played 10 rookies in the Super Bowl last season.

In short, he needs to be Brett Veach.

  29. I’m not sure what some of these fans here are going to do w/ themselves if the Bills ever do get a Lombardi.

All I hear is that the Bills are a joke, their window is closed and that they’ll never win anything. But the same group of fans here are completely obsessed w/ them.

If I felt that a team was irrelevant or had no chance, I wouldn’t care about them at all. I’d care about the teams that my team had to get past. The Bills have to be doing something right, imo.

  30. The AFC has been tough for a while. First you had the Pats year after year, now you have the Chiefs, and then the Bengals and Bills. I remember the Knicks during the Jordan years. In another time they would have won more often, it just wasn’t meant to be.

  31. Fact is Rams the DID win. Beane can hack on their strategy all he wants but Snead-1 Beane-0. Jerry Jones made similar comments about his team this off-season, therefore Beane = Jones.

  32. McDermott should have gotten them a better defensive coordinator than his buddy Leslie Frzier, and they should have addressed being a soft team when they had the best roster in the league three years ago. That’s not the case anymore. They might not even be the best team in their division anymore. Fangio is an elite DC. Belichick is an elite DC. Rodgers might not be what he once was, but he’s a great QB. Also, he’s not fooling anyone. He’s not going all in, but he signed Von Miller to $50 mil more than anyone else was offering a year ago. As of now, it’s going to take a whole lot more luck than it would have he gotten them whatever they needed two years ago to punch through to the top when their roster was overall better than anyone else.

  33. Competitive windows are finite. It’s only a matter of time before another team in your division or conference surpasses you. I realize the Patriots ruled the AFC East for 20 years, but for most teams, it’s not like that.

I don’t find that the Bills need to make a big trade but if an opportunity came up, I would hope they aren’t afraid to make it.

  34. At least they finally got that phat stadium that’s gonna be built by the taxpayers.

  35. The reason people say the Bills will never win anything is because their past history is all people have to go on. Until that changes, that’s the narrative.

Love all the thumbs down that Maine is part of New England. I guess I was wrong, lol.

  36. Yeah. We’ve really never seen a team that hasn’t won a championship before ever win one.

Makes sense. Sports history never has narratives that change, or anything like that.

  37. Unfortunately the NFL system is set up to prevent sustained success. That is unless you have the combos of Montana/Walsh, Brady/Belichick or Mahomes/Reid.

  38. I know Bill’s ownership is different today than it was back in the 90’s but keep in mind that Hall of Fame GM, Bill Polian, was fired after taking the Bills to 3 consecutive Super Bowls. Granted they lost all 3 but he built a team that was good enought to go to 3 straight. I don’t think Terry Pegula would fire Beane and I really hope he doesn’t, all I’m saying is…..ya never know.

  39. Fans of the patriots are here on this board because their bruins set the record and they were expecting lord Stanley. Lol. They were waxed in the first round. So funny

  40. Yeah, all we have now is the Celtics. That would be the 13th Championship Parade this century. Life is sooooo tough for Boston sports fans. The Red Sox are even ahead of the Blue Jays! How do the Argonaughts look this year, lol.

So then the one Jets win in MY lifetime is good enough and you have never criticized the Jets for anything? Or made fun of them?

    Just asking.

  42. Boston sports have had amazing success in the past 2 decades. I can’t imagine that as a fan.

Which makes the way Boston fans post on Bills articles even more perplexing. Like, I get Bills fans being a bit obsessed w/ the Pats – they owned our team for 20 years.

But why would a Pats fan be obsessed w/ the Bills, and the idea of the Bills even getting 1 parade?

It’s entitlement. They’re the rich kids. They’re mad that another team in the division has a chance for the 1st time in ages, and has taken their “rightful place” in the AFCE.

  43. The Bills have clearly missed their opportunity. Back in the 1970’s the Steelers won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years and are considered the team of the ’70s. Now with the collection of young talent they’ve amassed and the ascension of future Hall of Fame QB Ken Pickett, the Steelers are set to do it again… the team of the 2020’s. All NFL fans are so privileged to be witnessing the Rise of the New Steelers Dynasty.

  44. Rich kids. We’re smarter and we earn more money in Boston than the people in Buffalo. That’s why they’re jealous of what we have. And Bills fans post way more often on Pats threads than the opposite. It’s little brother syndrome.

I’m not even sure if you’re talking to me, but I don’t care about the Jets. They aren’t my team. Don’t care if your team has won or lost.

It’s set up to give as many teams a chance at winning it all as possible. And it’s the most successful sport in the country because of it. And the most profitable.

You just said you’re happier competing rather than ever winning a Lombardi. Then you must be one of the happiest fans to ever be.

  49. LOL

My self-esteem isn’t tied to my sports teams, big bro.

What a telling conversation this has been. You sound all kind of secure w/ yourself.

  50. If I felt that a team was irrelevant or had no chance, I wouldn’t care about them at all. I’d care about the teams that my team had to get past

    —-/

So you post on Pats articles constantly so I guess you consider them a team you have to get past ?

Or are you just being obtuse and sensitive because people are posting negatively on a Bills article?

  51. I post on a lot of articles. And my posts this offseason on Pats articles have been to congratulate McCourty, talk about how Belichick went against the grain in the draft, say that I thought Mac Jones was better than people think, and comment that I thought the Pats shouldn’t be ruled out of the AFCE race, and could easily win the division.

I posted recently in response to a Pats fan that was saying the Bills time was over to say that it would be a surprise if the Pats won the division, but that I wouldn’t rule the GOAT coach out.

Wouldn’t call it “constantly,” and certainly not the same tone as most of the Pats posters on Bills articles.

    So, there’s that.

  52. The 13 seconds fiasco still hurts. I think that ruined Buffalo last season & they got smacked around by Cincy in the playoffs.

Can they bounce back this season? Maybe, but the whole AFC is better as well. Don’t be surprised if the Bills miss the playoffs this year.

  53. Brandon Beane: Bills want to avoid going all-in for one year and then having a tear down
    ==========================

Well then the best way to do that would be quit handing out exorbitant contracts that have to be reworked after year 1 which almost NO team does including the Bills seeing how they already had to rework Allens contract, one that just kicks in starting this season!

OR what if the refs would have just called that “FALSE START” on the RAMS on the same play they called the DPI on the Bengals that moved the ball to the 1 yard line? Except for the Rams center everyone on the Rams OL “FALSE STARTED” and there were 5 refs standing there looking at the line of scrimmage and not only didn’t they throw a flag, NOT A ONE EVER REACHED LIKE THEY WERE GOING TO THROW A FLAG MEANING THEY WERE GOING TO LET IT GO NO MATTER WHAT!

The orders were in from HQ in NYC, one way or another that was going to be the Rams SB NO matter what happened!

  55. At least Boston has their sports. Been there a few times. Maybe the worst city and most boring ever.

Say wha? HUH? Steelers? LOOOOOLLLLL. You may recall they play in a division with Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and also Deshaun Watson (he will be better next year) ???? They will not make the playoffs.

  57. Beane should know that the Bills glory years were close but no cigar. One and done gets the monkey off your back. Allen is a franchise QB and we’ll be competitive as long as he’s healthy. Instead of worrying about a post SB roster how about we learn how to win in cold weather?
