Luke Musgrave should get a chance to be the No. 1 tight end in Green Bay

USA TODAY Sports

After years of not giving quarterback Aaron Rodgers significant support via pass catchers taken in the draft, three of Green Bay’s top four picks in 2023 play tight end or receiver.

The highest of the three that were picked — second-round tight end Luke Musgrave (pictured on the right) — has a chance to be the starter, right away.

As noted by Matt Schneidman of TheAthletic.com, the departure of Robert Tonyan and (presumably) Marcedes Lewis creates a hole at the top of the depth chart, and Musgrave “should get a chance right away to be the No. 1 tight end.”

Musgrave’s biggest competition ultimately could come from third-round tight end Tucker Kraft (pictured on the left).

Musgrave missed most of last season with a knee injury. That red flag coupled with a glut of great tight ends likely helped knock him down to No. 42.

The Packers also added three receivers in the draft to help first-year starter Jordan Love, led by second-rounder Jayden Reed.

That gives Green Bay plenty of young pass catchers, but not much of an established presence. Coach Matt LaFleur has said they’d like to add “some veteran leadership” to the group.

  1. katie musgrave would have a shot at the number 1 TE with that depth chart

  2. I don’t feel any less confident in the Packers now than I did before last season at this time, and it was high. Who knew Rodgers would break his thumb and have it be his too-late-explaining reason his passes were either in the dirt, high, or wide. Lo and behold, they lost the win-and-in game to Detroit. Detroit. Rodgers was again unable to be the difference-maker he was paid to be. Again. Eleven years of poor, must-win performances. I’m ready to see a Jordan Love-led Packer team. Young, talented, well-coached. Why can’t they be the best team in the division? I’m serious. Why not? Nobody and I mean nobody “knows” how Love will fare. Nobody. I’ll take the odds.

  3. All the young talent the Packers have on offense should make it easy for Jordan Love to firmly establish himself as the best QB in the division.

Heck, even Kirk Cousins could probably win a Super Bowl or two with this group.

  4. The roster may very well be more talented this season than they were a year ago, but that may not necessarily lead to more production, at least not right away.Still alot of good energy is in the land of GB.It’s a new day in Packerland.

  5. Of course he WILL be given the chance to be the starting TE in GB,not SHOULD be given the chance.all the draft picks will be given the chance to start if they prove themselves in practices and preseason games that they are better than the competition for the spots but it will be hard going up against the experienced players.

  6. I was shocked seeing video of Musgrave at mini camp how thin he is he sure is no Gronk. His arms were so small he looked more like a basketball player than a football player.

  7. Very few rookie TEs come in and immediately light things up. But Musgrave and Kraft should both get plenty of playing time.

  8. “I was shocked seeing video of Musgrave at mini camp how thin he is he sure is no Gronk.” Did Gronk enter his rookie season with the same body he had in later years or was it transformed by hitting the weight room.pumping iron consistantly does amazing things to the human muscle mass as this kid will find out because his paycheck depends on it.

That’s good news because it’d be a shame to waste a high pick on a TE just to ship him out like ole Irv…
