Jets think their 6-foot-8 tight end picked in the seventh round has “freakish ability”

Jets seventh-round draft pick Zack Kuntz didn’t have the easiest path to the NFL, failing to get much playing time at Penn State, transferring to Old Dominion and suffering a knee injury that cut short his final season. But he has undeniable athletic talent.

That starts with his 6-foot-8 frame and includes his impressive athletic profile, which included being the best tight end in the Scouting Combine in the vertical jump (40 inches), the broad jump (10 feet, 8 inches), and three-cone drill (6.87 seconds). Jets coach Robert Saleh says a talent like that in the seventh round just doesn’t come along very often.

“There’s an old saying, ‘Always take the freak that loves ball.’ And if you do, usually they pan out,” Saleh said, via the New York Post. “So, he’s got freakish ability and he’s got a love for football, so now we just got to work with him.”

Jets General Manager Joe Douglas used the F-word (freak) for Kuntz as well.

“He tested through the roof,” Douglas said, “so we were sitting there at the top of the seventh round and just going through some of the guys who just had that freak factor to him and he was right there at the top — the size, the speed, the length, the jump, just everything and another guy who may have been drafted a little sooner if not for the injury this year.”

The Jets look forward to developing that freakish talent.

  1. The guy is built like Gronk. WIth his size and height, he could do extremely well in the right offense….and the Jets may be the right offense now.

  2. Every team is looking for that next Gronkowski out there but a player with his skill level is hard to find.

  3. I was hoping Jags took him as a late rounder. He also ran a 4.55 with that huge stride he has. I like him! Almost 6’8 with a 40 inch vertical??!!

What a Match Up Problem. I predict he will become a GOOD NFL Player.

  4. Steelers got their own 6’7″ TE freak in the third round with Darnell Washington (Georgia)

  5. I kinda feel badly for the kid. If he screws up more than once in practice he will get an earful from a certain teammate and any budding confidence will be shattered.

  6. He has freakish potential, not ability. If it were the latter, he would have been drafted much higher than the 7th round.

  7. That’s the kind of dart you throw in the 7th round, guy with elite athletic traits who hasn’t put it together as a football player.

  8. “There’s an old saying, ‘Always take the freak that loves ball.’ And if you do, usually they pan out,”

    Lolololol.
Man, I like Saleh as a coach but some of the stuff that comes out of his mouth…

    So did Adam Sheheen

    ———-

He’s available. Roll the dice for a camp spot. Could be a sweet two tight end set 🙂

  10. He doesn’t have to be great ( or even good) in Year 1. He just needs to prove he’s better than Kenny Yeboah…

  11. Aaron Rodgers will take him on an experience that will make him catch everything

  12. Jordan Mailata was a 7th round pick. Near Pro Bowl after a few years in the league. Rugby player with freakish athleticism. It can happen.

  13. I hope he becomes a star just to hear his name announced on live tv.

Yeah but this guy runs 4.5 and DW runs 4.8. Plus DW comes with some medical red flags. But the Steelers rolled the dice now let’s see if this kid can play with the big boys.
