Justin Fields is “light years ahead” of where he was last year at this time

The Bears had the No. 1 overall pick and could have used it to draft a quarterback. But they’ve seen enough of Justin Fields, the No. 11 overall choice in 2021, to think they have their franchise quarterback.

The Bears used the extra picks obtained from the Panthers in the trade of the top pick to continue to build around Fields.

Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy expects Fields to take another step this season.

“Where he was at this time last year to where he is now, I think he’s just light years ahead of where he was,” Getsy said Saturday, via Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune. “And I feel like he has a ton more to grow going forward. So we’re excited to try to get the best out of him moving forward and keep working toward where we think he can go.”

Fields, 23, rushed for a team-leading 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns, but he led the league with 16 fumbles, threw 11 interceptions and averaged 149.5 yards passing per game. The Bears went 3-14.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has seen improvement already this offseason.

“Part of that [needed improvement] is rhythm and timing. That’s the footwork with Justin,” Eberflus said. “He’s been working on that really, really good in terms of the quick pass, dropback pass, movement pass, and he’s really made some big strides in that area coming in so far — on his own and now coming into the phase two [of the offseason program], that first week.”

Fields will have more to work with after the Bears added tight end Robert Tonyan in free agency, drafted receiver Tyler Scott and acquired receiver D.J. Moore in the trade with Carolina for the top pick.

  1. Yet he’s still light years away from being any good. Dumpster fire QB situation in Chicago.

  2. I’d hope so. The Bears are going to quickly regret not taking Bryce Young Number 1 overall when they pick top 5 again next year.

  3. I have been watching football for 40 years. Never has there been a report about a QB who struggled passing the 1st year was their a camp report shedding a negative light on the QB.

  4. The feet and the head are at opposite ends of the body, so I hope they’re not getting too carried away with footwork. An improvement in that area is important, too, but Fields just needs to develop into a QB. He has a lot of great things going for him. Great physical characteristics. Good leadership and competitiveness. Great arm talent. He’s just coming from college to pro, and he has a lot to learn. It doesn’t usually happen overnight. It happens faster when you have a good team around you, so be patient. As long as I’m seeing progress, I’m ok. Show me. I grew up a Buckeye’s fan, so I’m hoping.

WOW with the baby steps Fields is taking in about 10yr he might be an actual franchise QB just like Geno Smith!

  6. So, he’s going to average 160 yards passing a game and decrease his fumbles by 2%? This was the same sales pitch they made last year. Here’s a great idea, shut up and prove it already.

  7. Light years ahead of from where he was last year means he is still in the dark ages! After the 2023 season, Da Bears will be looking to replace Fields because he will not average 200 passing yards per game. No way Fields ends the year with 3400 yards passing, no way! His 5th year contract will not be picked up! Da Bears are saying the right things, but they know what they have is a RB playing QB, and they will tank for Calib or another QB in 2023!

  8. I’m not a Bears fan and didn’t think much of him coming out of college. But watching him play simply won me over as a fan! This kid puts is all out there every single second!

  9. This is the money year for Fields. No, the Bears don’t have everything they need to make or go deep in the playoffs but Fields has much more around him plus it’s Year Two under Getsy.

My bigger concern is how much playing from behind the O will need to deal with if the defense doesn’t take a major step forward as well. If Fields constantly has to play catch up his running yards and picks won’t drop much.

If he cuts the bad numbers in half and ups his passing YPG he’ll be up for a hefty pay day in 2024.

  10. I love these stories…

I don’t think a single player in the history of the NFL has ever NOT been “light years” ahead of where they were the previous year.

  11. Well last year at this time the team totally ignored an offense barren of talent and drafted defense with their high draft picks and spent all their UFA money on defense which was the strength of this team at the time. The Bears defense despite all those draft picks and all the money was horrible. Not sure why that doesn’t get talked about more.

Without the trade Fields still wouldn’t have much talent around him, thankfully the trade gave him a top WR. They used the 1st on an offensive tackle but went back to drafting mostly defense.

This is also the regime who forced him to be a drop back passer behind a bad offensive line and no WR last year until they figured out halfway through the season that he could scramble.

  12. Light years ahead means he will throw for 175 yards a game and only have 20 turnovers.

  13. Improved footwork? What about his awkward side arm throwing motion? Until he can fix that, he ain’t going anywhere. Time will tell.

  14. Easy to say … the proof is in the pudding. We’ll see for ourselves if he’s any better or not and the Bears better hope he is. If not, going to be a long year and another qb hunt will begin.

  15. If Justin Fields turns out not to be a good quarterback and the best quarterback this year is good, then the bears will have squandered a golden opportunity.

The risk for the bears is a build up the team so that it’s average and then going forward have two good record to draft high and thus have difficulty getting a quarterback.

The trade may work out for them but it may also leave them in a situation where it’s hard to get a quarterback in the future

  16. The Bears are going to be fighting my Lions for the division for years to come. Packers and Vikings will battle for 3rd place.

  17. 16 fumbles and 11 interceptions led the Bears to the worst record in the NFL. IF he doesn’t pan out, them trading away the #1 pick instead of drafting a real QB will look like one of the biggest drafting blunders of all time.

  18. We’ll see this season.
But if it’s like last year where the Bears all too often called run plays on third and long, and not just when they’re deep in their own end, then the ‘light years’ may be more like ‘light nanoseconds…’

Here come the haters, keep the hate coming.
    ————
Haters??? Hate is reserved for the good teams. We actually feel sorry for the fans of the worst team in the league!!!

  20. Oh Geez, another mistake and lack of me actually using my brain to articulate a proper assessment and complete story of what took place last year for the Bears.

Let’s not forget Fields single handedly kept the Bears in almost every game with his legs because the offense had no weapons and no line. The defense was a complete fire sale of the front seven and gave up more points than any team. Justin Fields played last season with the worst defense in the league. He did have fumbles and INTs that didn’t help neither. Pretty much seemed like finishing in last place was intentional, to be honest I think Fields will need to prove himself this year, otherwise the Bears will be looking for QB #45 in 30 plus years.

  21. Fields is going to shine this year. You’ll see major improvements if he has an offensive line. Jalen Hurts 2.0, book it!

    _______________

While the Bears had a terrible season last year, they aren’t the Lions who keep stalling out the inevitable with a proven failure at QB – Jared Goff.

At least the Bears are trying something with a young and exciting QB. Chicago has never had a QB, I’m sure their fans are excited. I sure am and I’m not a Bears fan.

  23. The reason there aren’t many running backs still doing it past 30 is the same reason you can’t have your franchise QB running for 1200 yards a season and expect him to have a long career.

  24. Every team has a goal entering the season. For the bears it’s beating the Packers so they’re not last in the division.

  25. Bears didn’t win one single game in the division last year future of the team still doesn’t look bright.

  26. I’m not a Bears fan and I beg the differ. I think the Bears future looks better than the Lions and Vikings future by a mile. Now that Rodgers is gone, that division could be won by anyone. The Vikings had a fluke season and the Lions are not anything until they find a QB to build around.

    ________

I don’t think Fields or the Bears OC intend for him to run that much. Last season Fields had no supporting cast and defense that gave up 35 points a game. You’re ranting non-sense to just hear yourself rant like an im-be-cile.

  28. I think Fields is a very good person, smart kid, and has potential; but seriously, in the history of the NFL has a team ever said that their young QB is light years behind where they were in the previous year?

  29. I’m not a fan of the NFCN teams, but I think the Bears will finish ahead of the Lions in third place as the Packers and Vikings battle it out for 1st place.

    Fixed it for you.

Fields is just getting started the Lions made a hug mistake taking a RB in the first round, this isn’t fantasy football. To make matters worse they draft a QB with a major injury!
