Report: Colts ask NFL to investigate possible tampering by Commanders with Andrew Luck

The unintended consequences of the Jonathan Gannon tampering case are already taking root.

With teams now deriving a potential benefit from throwing a tampering dart that hits the bull’s-eye, teams that believe they’ve been victimized by tampering will be more willing than ever to say so.

According to the Washington Post, the Colts have asked the NFL to investigate whether the Commanders tampered with retired quarterback Andrew Luck. Earlier today, ESPN reported that the Colts were exploring the matter.

An unnamed person within Luck’s camp told the Post that the Commanders did not contact Luck, his father Oliver, or his uncle who has worked as Luck’s agent. (It’s one thing for someone from Luck’s camp to say it; it’s another thing for the trail of digital bread crumbs to back it up.)

The Colts still want the NFL to explore whether improper contact occurred through intermediaries, and the Colts are demanding a proper investigation.

Of course they are, because they (and all other teams) now know that there’s a chance the tampering investigation will be resolved with a boost in draft standing come 2024.

The item in the Post includes an interesting wrinkle. Per the Post, the original article from John Keim of ESPN.com said that the Commanders had “even phoned the retired Andrew Luck.” The story was later revised to say that the Commanders had “even phoned about retired Andrew Luck.”

Something that specific and tangential to the article (which focused on the Commanders’ commitment to Sam Howell) didn’t happen accidentally. Someone noticed that, as worded, it could be problematic to the Commanders. Whether it was just a case of the Commanders being careful or someone kicking dirt on the tracks of tampering remains to be seen.

Regardless, if the NFL wants to get to the bottom of it, the NFL will. Along the way, the NFL may regret the precedent set by the bizarre way the NFL handled the Gannon tampering case.

  1. Anything that screws the Commanders we are all for it! Take those draft picks and fine Danny boy.

  2. Irsay is taking one last shot at MISTER Snyder before he’s out of the NFL. Im glad he is setting this precedent, because hopefully one day another owner will take a run at Irsay as he stumbles out of the league many many months from now.

  3. I mean Andrew Luck is retired and is no longer a NFL player so if he did want to come back he would have to he traded or released by the Colts show is that tampering because if anything the commanders are doing the Colts a favor by seeing if he will come out of retirement and would be willing to trade draft capital for him. Otherwise he just sits at the house and you get nothing for him.

But I guess Irsey want to take a note the the Lions playback with Barry Sanders and Megatron.

  4. Irsay wanting to strategically hammer that last nail into the Snyder ownership coffin.

  5. Irsay can’t hear anyone complaining about this because of all the crowd noise he’s pumping in to the stadium.

  6. No one should ever talk to Pat McAfee ever again.

He retired with years left on his Colts contract, therefore, its tampering.

  7. If the Commanders contacted Luck, I don’t see how that negatively affects the Colts in any way. He isn’t coming back to the Colts and they probably wouldn’t want him to come back. If he decided to come out of retirement and play for another team, the Colts would be compensated so they actually would benefit from another team contacting him. It may be tampering by the definition of the term, and the Commanders may have to pay a penalty if found guilty, but the Colts would not be entitled to any compensation like the Eagles were. The Eagles potentially lost a Super Bowl because of the Cardinals’ contact with Gannon. No other team has ever gotten direct compensation because someone tampered with one of their players (or former players). This situation certainly doesn’t rise to that level.

  8. I’d like Irsay and Saturday investigated for the tank job they pulled last year.

It easily could affect the Colts. If Luck was bitter, he could collude with Snyder’s team to engineer his trade to the commanders.

Let’s pretend it happened now. Secretly Luck and the commanders hammer something out. Then Luck tells the Colts he’s playing again. The Colts might not have the cap space or he might not fit in with Richardson. So they opt to trade him. Luck makes it known that the only other team he’ll play for is the Washington football team. With no other suitors willing to trade for a guy who won’t play for them, the commanders could snag Luck for peanuts.

This stuff happens. Rodgers and the Jets recently used this tactic. It looked like they were successful, then the Jets pulled a bizarro move and caved in to GB’s demands.

Obviously one example is a semi-active player and the other is long retired. The issue applies either way, though you could argue it’s a bigger concern for active players.

Um…the Commanders don’t have to proove they didn’t do it. The NFL and Indy have to proove they did do it. So I’m sorry but the Commanders don’t have to back anything up. You don’t proove a negative…

  11. I’ll be happy when the schedule comes out on Thursday so I can stop paying attention to the NFL for a couple months.

  12. I guess Irsay wants to grind on that axe a little more while he can. Petty.

  13. The colts are a dumpster fire. If anything this will make luck hate the colts even more than he already does and return just to spite them

  14. Before the Colts try to parlay this into a draft pick switch, they may want to make sure they have a better record than the Commanders.

  15. Let us not forget the potential this whole situation has for a new banner to be raised at Lucas Oil Stadium…most pathetic draft pick won ever!!!

You got love the Suck For Luck crowd…comic relief.

Remember the whole Suck for Luck thing?

  17. #1—The first time Luck stubs his toe, literally, or figuratively, he’s gonna wish for the couch. But a contract is a contract. Sue.

#2— one thing no one is talking about is the fact that Andrew, Lucks father, in my opinion, must have gotten every dime of his money from the Vince McMahon/XFL Lawsuit. If that WWF merger went through, and I think that it did, it has to be settled litigation for the merger to close. Right Mr. florio?

  18. Wow, a lot of negative comments! I wonder if you’d feel the same if it was your team? And who cares if the commanders contacted luck? Let that quitter gi play for them, he retires in the preseason leaving the colts screwed.

  19. As though Luck would consider coming out of retirement for either one of these teams.

  20. Irsay is a moron. It’s sad that he’s an actual owner. The guy actually thinks he can sing as well.

If the Commies wanted to talk to Luck, they need to ask the Colts first. The Colts more than likely would have allowed it, but you do have to get permission first to talk to a player that is under contract, which Luck’s rights in the NFL are still held by the Colts even though he retired because his contract had three years remaining, and the Colts did not attempt to recover any of the pro-rated signing bonus.

Stupid as you think it is, this is not ‘Nam Smokey, there are rules.

  22. Ah, the Tattletale Colts are at it again.
Don’t you fellas have a banner to crochet?
Softest, whiniest team in the history of the league.
