For three years, the Colts tried the veteran free agent route in attempting to replace Andrew Luck. Philip Rivers led the team to the playoffs before retiring, with Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan following with wasted years.

Finally, the Colts have invested a high draft pick in a quarterback they hope is the team’s franchise quarterback.

Former Florida star Anthony Richardson has his new teammates excited about the future.

“He reminds me of Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson,” Taylor said, via Justin Melo of SI.com. “Looking at the size component, you’d throw Cam Newton in there as well. He’s a physical threat.

“As long as he comes in willing to absorb the information, it’s going to get real scary out there on the field for opposing defenses.”

The Colts ranked 30th in points scored last season in starting three quarterbacks. They have started eight quarterbacks the past five seasons.

They were without Taylor for six games last season with a right ankle injury that required offseason surgery. He rushed for a career-low 861 yards and four touchdowns in 2022.

With a rookie quarterback under center, the Colts surely will lean on Taylor this season.

“I’m letting Richardson know that I’m here, and I have his back no matter what the case may be,” Taylor said. “Whether that means running, in pass protection, or if he needs somebody as an outlet in the passing game. It could just mean me being efficient in the run game for him.

“We’re all here to help out whoever starts at quarterback for us. That’s how we’re designing this offense. Specifically with Richardson as a rookie, we need to make sure this is a comfortable environment for him.”

  1. I would say he’s more like Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields. Jalen Hurts can actually throw the ball.

  2. Better to be compared to those 2 and not Justin Fields

  3. “We’re all here to help out whoever starts at quarterback for us. That’s how we’re designing this offense”

Two thoughts. One, there is no offense that will maximize both Minshew and Richardson—they are very different. They will pick a lane and stick with it. If the other QB has to play, it will be a lesser version of the offense. Said another way, they will install an offense for a running QB and Minshew will be horrible in it.

Two, Richardson was a project. Now he has been drafted 4th to considerable fanfare. There’s pressure on him and the praise only increases it. The kinda pressure that Jackson, Hurts, and Fields didn’t face.

WOW what an insult to Hurts with a 66.5% completion rate and comparing him to Richardson who has a 52% completion rate!

There’s a real good reason most of these guys are football players!

  5. Lamar Jackson won a heisman. Anthony Richardson won…less games than he lost.

  6. Project QBs going in the top 5 overall of the draft for years now, why are teams stooping so low to try and get a QB? They’re scraping around the bottom of the barrel and come out with guys like Richardson who was 6-6 with a 52% completion rate.
If it doesn’t work out which it doesn’t 90% of the time it’s just a wasted top 5 pick when those teams could have taken a player that would have been a plug and play starter for the next ten years, there’s absolutely no way I’d invest that much into a project!

I’ve never seen this level of desperation in the NFL in over 50yrs, it’s unbelievable!

  7. The problem isn’t just the QB, it’s the organization, beginning with the owner and the GMs and HCs he hires. Laying the future success or failure on a rookie QB is neither reasonable nor fair.
