Dan Campbell: It’s going to be a long time before Hendon Hooker plays

The Lions have a starting quarterback. They also now have the heir apparent to Jared Goff, having drafted Hendon Hooker in the third round.

Hooker, who is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, is not expected to play this season.

“Really, this is a redshirt year for him,” Lions coach Dan Campbell told Chris Long on the Green Light Podcast, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “He’s got to get this leg right first, and then he’ll learn under Jared, and then let’s see what happens. If he can eventually become your two or maybe down the road, later on, it’s more than that, but it’s going to be a long time.”

Hooker, who injured his left knee in a Nov. 19 game against South Carolina, is doing low-gravity running and recently resumed taking dropbacks. He has said he is not putting a timetable on his return.

The Lions “like” that Hooker, who is 25, is older.

Now, he gets a chance to sit, watch and learn from Goff, who was kept in the loop by the Lions that they might draft a quarterback.

“To be able to get him where we did — we traded back twice and we were still able to acquire him — we felt like that was, everything played out just the right way for us,” Campbell said. “We were excited, and to your point, yes, Goff is going to handle it well. He knew. [General Manager] Brad [Holmes] had called him, and he’s great. And he’ll help this guy just learn and grow.”

  1. Not a bad gamble at the top of the third round. A year to rehab and another year after to learn under Goff – there are worse ways to spend that pick.

  2. Lions… Best receiver suspended six games, lets 17 TD RB walk, drafted a QB to make Goff look over his shoulder, traded all pro tight end for a rookie. Lions gonna Lion. 8-9.

  3. Being older is not a positive.
    Just ask Brandon Weedon.

They can see how he is in practice, before deciding to go with him next year.

  4. Not expected to play this season?  What’s up with slow recovery?  Nine months is typical.  DeShaun Watson tore his ACL in Nov 2017 and was ready for opening day 2018 good as new.

  5. I wouldn’t look too far ahead. Playing NFL QB is not easy. It’s not an automatic jump from college to pro. Hooker has a lot of areas in need of improvement. I’m not say it’s not possible, but it’s not automatic.

  6. The only time Hooker plays is if Goff gets hurt, gets traded or contract not renewed. Another wasted pick by the Lions.

  7. I still don’t hate the pick, but given his age, buy the time he finally starts he’ll probably be getting AARP mailings.

Absolute waste of a pick in the 3rd round.
    —————-
It pairs well with their 1st round pick from this year and Williamson from last year.

  9. Imagine the advantage the Lions could have if Hooker is a viable replacement for Goff after next season. QB’s are getting paid 50 million a year and going up, that’s a lot of cap space not tied up at the QB spot, if it works.
