Expect Patrick Mahomes to again be the highest-paid player in league history, before Week One

When Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed his current 12-year contract three years ago, he nudged the bar for the highest average per year (APY) by roughly $10 million, to $45 million annually.

Now, with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson at $52 million per year, Mahomes has fallen $7 million per year behind the highest-paid player in the sport.

Chiefs G.M. Brett Veach already has vowed to address the Mahomes deal after more quarterback contracts are completed. While Veach didn’t delve into any specifics, here’s what reasonably should be expected, based on our conversations with folks aware of the dynamics of the situation.

Expect Mahomes, before the season begins, to once again be the highest-paid player in league history.

The details will be interesting, and subject to differing interpretations. Because Mahomes has nine years left on his current contract, a new-money APY in excess of $52 million per year would be obtained simply by tacking three years and a penny more than $156 million on the back end of the existing deal.

The real question will become the value of the contract from the moment it’s signed. Also relevant to the analysis will be the full guarantee at signing, and the cash flow in the first three years of the revised deal.

In 2020, Mahomes swapped a high APY and a complicated but lucrative guarantee structure for cash flow in the years that were most likely to be affected by the pandemic. Now that those days have come and gone, the cash flow can be boosted in the early years of a revised deal.

Whether big-picture proclamations or devilish details, a new deal is coming for Mahomes, sooner than later. He has more than earned it — and with each new quarterback deal that is done, his own situation becomes more glaring. Look for that to at least be partially rectified in the coming weeks or months.

Ultimately, Mahomes is trying to strike the balance of fair compensation with leaving enough cash behind to have a team that lets him pursue championships and, ultimately, to chase Tom Brady’s all-time record of seven championships. Mahomes needs five to tie, six to win.

While not yet a real threat to Brady, Mahomes isn’t far from making things interesting. And that could be enough to get Brady interested in trying to get to No. 8 before it’s all said and done, just in case.

  1. Gotta put that last line about Brady? Give it a rest. No contract should be longer than 3 years….

  2. If you leave $$ for OL and weapons you’ll recoup it and then some with endorsements as the rings pile up

Of course he has his brother’s legal fees to consider-its a joke

  3. I don’t get it, did Mahomes all of the sudden become more valuable or has he already been valuable enough to get paid more than 52 million a year. If so, then why did the Kansas City football team lowball him in his last contract?

  4. Sure let’s lose more players like Tyreke Hill. This is why Brady blows away other quarterbacks. He put his ego aside and took less money so his teams could pay other players.

  5. But you all said his team friendly deal was good one. I told you it was a garbage deal from day one. If not, why does it need to be amended so soon? And once Mahomes gets this new deal done, do not compare him to Tom Brady anymore because Tom never cared about being the highest paid. So much for your theory of PM not chasing the money. PFTers are so easily hoodwinked.

  6. This should show the mass amount of commenters who tried to say it was smart to sign Hurts to a deal early before the price would go up because they got a bargain and then cried when told thats not how it actually works, that its not how it actually works. This isn’t to say the Hurts deal is bad but just any high level qb who ends up on a “bargain” or “cheap” contract won’t be cheap or a bargain for long no matter how long their contract is for.

  7. Does he really need a raise? He should be more concerned with the Chiefs being able to afford the pieces around him to sustain their success.

  8. What’s the point? Why bother signing contracts if every year or so your are going to renegotiate or sign a new one. It’s all really becoming ridiculous. Everyone wants to be the highest paid at their perspective positions.

  9. Hope it all works out for #15, he’s done plenty to deserve it if anyone has…and if it still helps the team put players around him for the future, even better…..But I don’t think any of us were really worried that he was in any danger of running out of enough money to put Ketchup on the table….

  10. Patrick Mahomes Should be the highest paid player in the league. He has earned it. No Doubt about it.

  11. No way he gets close to the only GOAT TB12 he has a long way to go before that. Tell us again how many Mahomes has?

Chiefs traded away Tyreek Hill, and (checks notes) Won another Super Bowl.

  13. Im a Fan of the goat, but all this brady talk saying he took less for more becuase of his ego, is straight false. His father owns a 3 billion company. patrick mahomes son might be the next tom brady, because his father is rich.

  14. I’d tell the union to leave me alone, I want to focus on winning. The money will take care of itself. I’d sit down with management and see how I could lower the cap number in coming seasons as I’m still under contract for many years

  15. As a Chiefs fan I have a feeling that when this happens, the Chiefs chance of signing DL Chris Jones to an extension will be very slim. There are a lot of contracts coming up for renewal next season and unless there is a huge salary cap upward adjustment some core players are gonna be leaving.

  16. And once Mahomes gets this new deal done, do not compare him to Tom Brady anymore because Tom never cared about being the highest paid.

    2010 says hi.

$35mil cap hit this year… which is #3 among QBs

  17. The KC Chiefs are a great example of good luck and timing. I think it’ll be more difficult every year for the Chiefs to stay at the top. They have all the talent. But, parody is parody. That is one of the reasons we all keep coming back year after year.

  18. Mercy! I have not heard one word from Patrick’s mouth about being mad or wanting to be the highest paid player on the planet! just because Florio says it does not make it real. From everything I’ve heard he is more concerned about chasing a winning legacy. He has invested money in the KC area and will make sooo much in endorsements he would have no reason to have to be the highest paid at his position. I get it, all of the haters want the Chiefs to fall flat on their faces and for Mahomes to fail. I don’t see it happening and I’m going to continue to enjoy and cherish every stinking minute of this moment in time! It feels good to be a Chiefs fan!

  19. They couldn’t pay Orlando Brown and let Hill go. As his pay rises the complimentary players fall. 8 rings? I don’t think so. It takes more than one fat salary to win that many.

  20. So pay them ridiculous money big contract on what they can do in the future then when they do what they are paid to do, you have to give them more b4 the contract is even close to being completed. Ya, makes sense.

  21. Does he really need a raise? He should be more concerned with the Chiefs being able to afford the pieces around him to sustain their success.
    ============

Did you see a quote where Mahomes was asking for a raise?

This is team-driven, to get ahead Burrow, Herbert and Lawrence before they reset the market.

  22. Don’t sign a 12 year deal if you keep needing to be the highest paid at the position. Sign shorter deals. Geez.

  23. Missing in all this is Mahomes asking for more money. Meanwhile, his off the field endorsements and ownership in a variety of businesses that have taken off keep getting higher and higher.

Don’t think Mahomes is worried about $10 million extra per year when he’s making far more then that elsewhere.

But keep talking to “folks aware of the dynamics of the situation” who have no knowledge of the real situation going on within the organization.

  24. Hopefully it’s still team friendly, though being the highest paid I’m not sure how that would work. I’m sure the league and players union want Pat to get as much as he can. So it resets the market, and everyone across the league gets more. Imagine being so rich, that all your rich peers demand you restructure so everyone else can get more. Whereas if you take less, everyone that you actually play with is mad, because you’re keeping money out of their pockets. They can’t feed their families Pat, you gotta restructure! Generational wealth problems, we’ll all just sit over here and criticize, while we pay their salaries with our 40 work week jobs.

  25. When he signed his original deal he was the highest paid QB.Patrick is not asking for more money. The chiefs are trying to be fair and give him a cost of quarterback raise. Everyone saying he isn’t satisfied is crap. Dude wants to win and he know’s he is making plenty. If someone came to you and said we want to give you a raise you’re saying you wouldn’t take it?

  26. Why? If he were smart he’d tell leach to put that money into the team and keep the championship pieces in place… when you’re making 45 million a year what’s an extra 7 in the grand scheme of things…

  30. Why bother signing contracts if every year or so your are going to renegotiate or sign a new one.

    – – – – – – – – – –

This right here. What is the point of long contracts if in 2-3 years the highest paid player is no longer the highest paid player and the contract is renegotiated? Cap the contract length at 4 years with the option to negotiate after 3. Oh but wait, that would actually wreck the salary cap because teams couldn’t spread out those signing bonuses over 7+ years.

  31. The best QB in the NFL should be the highest-paid QB in the NFL. That’s the American way.

  32. So what was the whole point of the team friendly deal if the media was going to throw it in your face 3 years later that you are underpaid forcing the issue?

  33. Other than if you’re not a fan of KC, good relations with YOUR BEST EMPLOYEE is part of the on going plan. I have a friend who routinely closes $10+ MILLION dollar deals for his company and after a great year last year, gave him a bonus of $1mm – it was not in the contract but they wanted to reward him for a great job.

Basically look at the SB’s won before Mahomes and now? Bottom line, he produces and delivers in EVERY ASPECT of being a franchise leader. He wins and makes the players better around him. Off the field, he is gracious and is a great representative of the franchise. What more could you want?

So, yes, when time comes, you adjust the contract for perception sake and because you don’t manage by ‘my way or the highway,’ you are not running a truck stop.

  34. Tom Brady didn’t take less, he just converted more money upfront from contract restructures into signing bonuses.

More cap room for team, zero pennies lost on Brady’s end.

Would love to see a qb get a percentage of the cap

  35. Imagine making $78,000 a day, after taxes. That’s a lot of bath-bombs.

  36. I can’t get past “Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson at $52 million per year.” NFL owners only have themselves to blame for creating this absurd QB market where anyone average or better gets hall of famer money.

    ————–

Brady became the highest player in NFL history in 2010. What we learned recently is that the reason why Brady “took less” was because he was fearful if he pulled a Peyton Manning and always demanded to be the highest paid, BB would deal him.

Garoppolo drafted in Rd 2 after horrendous postseason games by Brady from 2007-2012, with BB working with JimmyG DAILY, was not a mirage or a myth. Thats’s a 100% fact.

What I find funny is teams who don’t think there is a cap and contracts can be just whatever when you are building the middle part of your roster in particular. Every team has money put into their elite players. It’s what you do with the rest of it on the roster that matters and how the contracts are structured.

You’re right in a sense that this all but ensures KC to become slowly worse as they go.

  38. The odds are Mahomes won’t match Brady’s rings, but it has nothing to do with Mahomes (or Brady). During Brady’s heyday, the AFC was a wasteland of talent and the Patriots rarely had a hard road to the Super Bowl. Today, the AFC is stacked, while the NFC is relatively weak (we know this because over the next six weeks at least 4 major “experts” will pick Dallas for the Super Bowl).

  39. Get what you can while the market still favors you. Getting it done before Herbert and Burrow will cost our rivals more money too. Get it done Veach!

Everyone knows it has to be 3. Only YOU and other people who don’t know NFL history think a couple of SB wins means you formed a dynasty.

    Laughable. The entitlement is amazing.

60s Packers, 70 Steelers, 80s 9ers, 90s Cowboys and 2000s (x2) Pats. They all had numerous titles within a 5 year span. Dynasty. Period.

KC needs another pretty soon to seal it. 2 titles in 4 seasons is not a dynasty. Denver of the 90s won back to back but it wasn’t a dynasty.

    Good luck in life, kid.

  41. As the best player in the league, there’s no reason for him to not be compensated to reflect that. Give me a break with all this “well Brady didn’t care about money”. Boo hoo. Brady not pushing to make his worth also kept other guys from earning more because the best player wasn’t setting the bar. Some would call that selfish for not looking out for his peers. Personally, I don’t care, they make plenty. I’m just saying there’s a strong argument there. However, for whatever bizarre reason, most of you fools are happier whenever the owners save money like it’s yours.

Right, the only way to evaluate players is Super Bowl Wins. Which is why Eli Manning is considered equal to his brother, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, Jim McMahon, Nick Foles are all obviously better than Dan Marino, Charles Haley is widely considered the 2nd best player of all time, and the Dick Butkus selection to the Hall of Fame is still mocked to this day.

  43. Unless he enjoys winning, then he’ll stick to his word/contract

  44. Who signs a 12 year contract that doesn’t have an inflation adjustment clause, particularly when you know Jimmy Carter 2.0 is on his way. I refinanced my home to lock in a 2.75% flat rate just weeks after the 2020 election precisely because the trillion dollar platinum coin boys were back in town. Mahomes needs better lawyers and not just for his brother.

  45. While not yet a real threat to Brady, Mahomes isn’t far from making things interesting. And that could be enough to get Brady interested in trying to get to No. 8 before it’s all said and done, just in case.

    ————

OMG still with this? He’s retired. He’s not coming back and if he did, getting his 8th would be a pipe dream.

That said, Mahomes is really far from making things interesting actually (from a Super Bowl championships perspective). Mahomes may go down as the consensus greatest player ever at some point if he continues to play well, but the odds of getting to 7 titles are very, very low.

The odds of winning even one more are really low.

Brady actually was the one who made sure it would be tough for Mahomes. Brady beat him in the AFC championship and Mahomes surely would have won that Super Bowl and Brady beat him in the Super Bowl. Otherwise, all else being equal, Brady would have 5 and Mahomes would have 4 and Mahomes would likely already be seen as the greatest to ever do it.

The reason Brady went to Tampa was definitely partly because of Mahomes. I am sure he wasn’t thinking he could get out of the AFC in NE any more.

  46. Great qb but his ego is embarrassing… it’s of lebron james proportions

  47. In case anyone forgot, Brady “took less money” because the Rats were paying his fake wellness company tens of millions of dollars in fees and letting them operate rent free in NE facilities. It was all just a fancy way to circumvent the salary cap. Look it up.

  50. No QB will ever get as many rings as Tom Brady only because the league may not be around that long to go give Mahomes the opportunity. 54. “His ego?” Has anyone heard Mahomes mention wanting a raise or asking for a trade? No – there are other QB dramas this offseason, but nothing from Mahomes.

“They couldn’t pay Orlando Brown, Jr.” – false again. They let him walk and actually paid Jawaan Taylor more than OBJ. Mahomes escapability covered up a lot of OBJ’s flaws. Why is throwing on the run and sidearm- mostly escaping backside pressure from OBJ.

“He’ll never be Brady” – there are.many ways to construct a contract that is flexible and Brady never missed guaranteed money. 5 straight AFC Championship Games at home – 2 OT losses with a subpar D. 3 Super Bowls and.2 Lombardi’s while being 27 years old.

Now if you’d take off your homer glasses you’d see that’s not true. 1st off the chiefs will wait on those contracts as they’ve essentially said. 2nd If mahomes redesign his contract today neither Burrow or Herbert would be asking for more money than Mahomes got. 3rd lets just say your dream is actually reality, Mahomes signs soon thus jacking up Herbert’s and Burrows contract. All that that means is the Chiefs will be redoing Mahomes contract again and paying him even more 🤣🤣

  56. Joe Montana and Tom Brady (and others) have something to say about people calling Mahomes the GOAT.

While Mahomes is the best ACTIVE QB in the NFL right now, he has to win at least 2 more rings before he can even be in any discussion about being the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)

  59. I don’t care what team, or what sport you play for. No athlete is worth that much money.

  60. Money money money. Pay ‘‘em more. Need to be highest paid player. Well it’s not my money so I really don’t care what they make. The NFL priced me out years a go.

  61. That’s the way Tom Brady would have done it. An annual adjustment to ensure highest salary

  62. They have to keep raising him pay to make the cap continually expand, the top contracts dictate the cap increases now, came into effect a couple seasons ago

  63. NFL will end up like Bed Bath & Beyond when the fans can no longer afford to go to the games because teams will continue to increase ticket prices to pay the salaries.

    =============================

REALLY? The Chiefs had to rework Mahomes contract this off-season so they could have the money to put a team on the field for this season by moving over $10mil from this seasons money into a signing bonus freeing up about $8mil in cap space. The Browns had to rework Watsons contract after just 1yr, the Bills had to rework Allens contract befire it even kicked in, this proves these teams can’t afford the contracts they handed out in the first place BUT you think they’re going to give Mahomes even more money so they end up losing more players like Hill and can’t keep the team together because those other players want paid too and if they up Mahomes there isn’t going to be enough there to pay them and Mahomes too.

This BS has to stop sooner or later because it’s gotten totally out of hand and it’s killing teams!

BTW Mike why are you soooooo obsessed with what a player makes?

OH one other thing, if you’re using the “predicted amount the cap will increase” in the next few years that’s NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! There’s NO WAY the cap is going to go up >38% by 2026 and I’d bet the farm on it, that’s too much of a jump and there’s a lot going to happen between now and then.

  69. That’s why the owners were colluding to keep QB salaries down. He should hire Lamar jackson as his agent though.

  70. This BS has to stop sooner or later because it’s gotten totally out of hand and it’s killing teams!

    Really?

In my lifetime since the cap was instituted in the early 90s, every team with a top tier franchise QB has paid up. Elway, Aikman, Favre, Manning, BRADY, Rodgers, Mahomes….. over and over and over and over again. You can set your watch to it.

If this is so destructive, why does every team do the same thing? Over and over and over again.

Umm, my team has played in 11 SBs and they have earned 6 rings and 2 diffferent dynasties. lol

Pretty sure that’s better than KC.

Also, why on earth woukd I be jealous of KC paying Mahomes more out of a wild and bloated QB market when all it does is hurt KC long term? It hurts KC to feel forced to pay MORE if you don’t need to.

    lol

Like, wouldn’t you rather have a great qb on a rookie deal as opposed to not? Of course! Cincy almost did it with Burrow. Seattle
did it with Wilson , but the contract ruined Seattle. Feeling insecure because other franchises overpay some other qb who isn’t as good as Mahomes, is dumb. He just signed his deal 2 years ago.

Do you pay attention to anything?

  72. back in 1994 when the cap started, you should look at the numbers compared to the cap – most teams carried a top tier QB between 4-10% of their cap – now that number is near/over 15% – Ask yourselves an honest question, would you be happy playing QB for a team where the maximum money you could make at that position was say 25M a year? 20 a year? As the cap increases and players take more and more from the owners, the people/ the fans end up paying more and more as well. In a world of inflated costs, the NFL is no longer family friendly, and all about big business. The extra proceeds should be made to lower the ticket and concession costs, improve the fields and staidums instead of demanding tax dollars from the people, its a shame that most kids will never be able to afford a game ticket with their family because the cost of living is so damn high everywhere now. I remember as a kid, mom would buy a family pack of ball park franks – that pack also had game tickets to go see a game as well… Greed and Envy rule the league, nobody cares about the true meaning anymore. The same can be said in politics, and many other professions.

  73. I can’t help but wonder if Mahomes was white his new deal would have been already done.

  74. Major chiefs fan, owners need to stop over paying these idiots. If your not better then the highest paid then you’re notgoing to be highest paid because your next. Period! That’s not a reason to get more money. I’ll ask my boss to give me a raise, not because I’m worth more but because I’m next. I wonder how that’ll go over. Can’t build a winning team without money, won’t have money if 4 guys get it all. If your pay is low you shouldn’t have signed the contract. Once your contract is up, not a year or two early then you negotiate a new contract, honor your contract

  75. For everyone who says he should take a deal that helps the team keep players and not get paid as much, well then how about you go in to your job tomorrow sit down with management tell them you wanna be paid less so you can keep the other workers! Or when another person at your job sucks, but gets a raise and you don’t, I bet you would be mad! I don’t blame any player for trying to get paid what is the going rate for that position.

  76. Pats fans love talking about those Super Bowls of the past to hide the insecurity of being the worst team in the AFC East. Brady isn’t coming back and BB is a step closer to retirement everyday.
It was a good run and the trophy case is full, but unfortunately for Pats fans those days are long gone.
Join the Steelers of the 70’s and Cowboys of the 90’s talking about teams that used to be relevant.

  77. Do you pay attention to anything?

  78. Why is Florio so obsessed with what Mahomes is making? Simple, he got over 100 people to comment on his article and thousands to read it.

  79. Have you ever played a team sport? Have you ever been the leader of a team sport? Have you ever been the leader of a championship team sport? Do you know about the NFL salary cap? So, if we know all that, why are we encouraging the leader of a championship team, and a guy making well over $50 million per year including endorsements, to go around to all his teammates and insist that they take a pay cut, so he can make more? You know that’s what’s happening. The owner is paying all he’s allowed to pay. That’s a salary cap. So if you’re maxed out, and one player gets more, other player have to get less. Sounds like someone is trying to break up this championship team. Mahomes isn’t ignorant to all these facts. He’s a winner. That’s not how winner’s think. Mahomes is smart enough to know that he’s heading for endorsement dollars in the billion dollar range. How much do you think that second super bowl affected Peyton Manning’s endorsement earnings? If you think about it, he could have played for zero salary, and the result would be that he put himself in position to make billions in endorsements. Mahomes could play for zero salary and end up making more money than any player from this era. So, if money is what’s motivating him, he’ll probably ask for a pay cut.

  80. It’s funny how some folks are convinced Mahomes will sign a contract that will hurt the team’s chances of staying competitive. Even with Veach and Reid drafting and cultivating talent at a league leading level, Patrick will make sure he does nothing to hamper his/their ability to keep those titles rolling in as often as possible. #chiefsnation

  81. When he signed his original contract, it should have been the bar to which every other QB needed to be measured by. You start producing like Pat, then you get paid like Pat. It’s a bizarre scenario where Kyler and Lamar haven’t even sniffed the kind of accomplishments Mahomes has and yet they demand to break the market year over year.

  82. mahomes is a quarter way through his deal and theyre begging to give him a raise. he doesnt even need to ask because he earned it a lot of these diva players should learn from him

  83. Honest question: has Mahomes actually said he wants to renegotiate his contract? Because I can’t find that anywhere. Only articles like this one that insinuate. Before we vilify the guy for wanting 45% of his team’s salary cap, can we check to see if he really does?

  84. How do you deal with a upcoming massive QB contract?

Trade away a few pieces for draft picks and develop talent.

Andy Reid isn’t a novice. He will adjust and his system will chug along.

    The Brady stuff is old.

  85. Brady always left money on the table because his wife made over a $100Million per year. Also, he wanted to win and realized by taking less money the team could afford more good players which made it more likely he would go to the SB.

  86. Brady always left money on the table because his wife made over a $100Million per year.
    ==========

And don’t forget all the money under the table..

  87. I want Tom Brady to stay retired BUT HECK, if some team offered him 75 to 80 million for ONE years worth of work , he should come back ! Step up someone.

  88. I wonder if the normal people who comment here would “leave money on the table” in their lives. If their bosses came to them and asked them to take less than market value so the company could have a good quarter, I wonder how many of us would jump at that. Not many, I suspect. My point is if you’re not willing to “leave money on the table”, don’t expect others to do it. It’s not the players job to manage the cap for a team. That’s the job of the GM.
