Jets OC Nathaniel Hackett: We have very good pieces, there has to be cohesion

When Nathaniel Hackett was the head coach of the Broncos at this time last year, there was a lot of excitement around the team about what quarterback Russell Wilson‘s arrival would mean for Denver’s season.

That excitement curdled early in the regular season, however. Wilson struggled all year, the Broncos offense never got on track, and Hackett was fired with two games left on the schedule.

Hackett’s experience is a reminder that big trades don’t always work out as hoped and those memories haven’t been purged now that he’s working as the Jets’ offensive coordinator. Trading for Aaron Rodgers last month has raised the expectations for the Jets for this season, but Hackett is quick to offer a reminder that looking good on paper and looking good on the field aren’t the same thing.

“Potential is one of those fancy words that we haven’t done anything yet,” Hackett said, via Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. “Right now, we have some very good pieces, some very good people and players on the field. There has to be cohesion, there has to be a mesh. Aaron runs things on the field very uniquely, so there are a lot of things the guys are going to have to learn and get used to. Where that goes, I’m not sure. But I know there’s going to be some growing pains, there’s going to be some bumps. It is just about us getting on the field, everybody getting comfortable with each other and we will see where it goes.”

The offseason excitement about the Broncos led to them being put in a lot of nationally televised games last year and their failure to live up to the hype became a leading storyline of the 2022 season. The Jets will find out how much time they’ll spend in the spotlight on Thursday and then they’ll get back to work on making sure they avoid the same fate as the Broncos.

  1. Good luck getting with the primadonna. He’ll have the kids thrown under the bus by October.

  2. I take cohesion to mean somehow figuring out a way to keep Aaron upright for 65% of the snaps.

  3. Imagine if Sean Payton resurrects Wilson while Rodgers struggles. The NYC media will eat Hackett alive.

  4. And therein lies the rub, Nat. I can’t wait until you’re .500 at midseason and the blame game starts in earnest.

  5. This dude is a terrible coach. this should be fun to watch blow up this year. Jets will still win 7-8 games this year and miss the playoffs.

Let’s go on the record and predict the Pats W/L totals within the division

    I will go with 1/5

    What is your prediction?

  7. Or, the same thing could happen as the last time Hackett was Rodgers’ OC. Wouldn’t that be sad for the haters.

  8. He says this as he has flashbacks of “Broncos Country. Let’s Ride!” echo in his mind.

  9. The offseason excitement continues in East Hanover NJ!!

And why wouldn’t it? We’ve got a lot of the pieces in place. A lot of promise. A lot of waiting around

  10. Hackjob got run out of Denver really quick for a reason and Erin Rodgers hasn’t thrown for 300 yards since sometime in 2021. LOL

I mean, if NE goes for it in OT last year at Lambeau, Zappe beats Rodgers. LOL

Rodgers hasn’t been elite in 3 years.

2020 was arguably his best season.

  12. packers fans now are writing only on jets topics and for sure they will watch only jets games in september…imagine how happy they are with the beginning of the new era…love love love…the jets ahahah

  13. Why are Jets’ fans acting like Rogers wins the Super Bowl every year? He did it once, 12 years ago.

  14. Nathaniel knows as well as any coach, the devil’s in the details. Lots of unanswered questions and hard work ahead.

  15. I have no faith at all in Hackett to do anything right. But Saleh seems like a pretty dang good coach. So, I don’t think this Jets team will be last year’s Broncos. What I do foresee is that this Jets team will be slow on the uptick on all those things that Aaron Rodgers was quick to do in games, like how Rodgers will use his code word to hurry up the offense and draw the defense offside for a free play. Those plays will be harder to come by (but not impossible). What I do foresee is a much bigger year for Breece Hall as the offense leans on the run to setup all of Rodgers’ air attack.

  16. When Nathaniel Hackett was on the sidelines head coaching for the Denver Broncos…he always had that same look on his face that said “Did I close the garage door at the house before leaving for work this morning?”

Aaron Rodgers is an old friend to Packers fans .. who has left the nest to go out on his own. Wish him the very best but that does not mean Packers fans want to disown or stop following him.

Why is Rodgers blamed for not being able to overcome a defense ranked in the bottom 1/3 the overwhelming majority of his career?

    Cohesion and clock management.

Valid point. There’s a head coach above him with the Jets. Not just to call timeouts, but to oversee tempo, modify play calling, set strategy and so on. He looked overwhelmed having all that extra responsibility last year. But between learning from failure and having some of that off his plate, not a stretch to think he’ll avoid some of the screwups he had in Denver.

  20. For Jets fans, every glimmer of hope turns into a glimmer of nope.

  21. Nathaniel Hackett was one of the dumbest coaching hires of this offseason. Another talentless retread who has been able to parlay his father’s reputation into a multi-million dollar nest egg. This time next season he’ll be employed by another clueless franchise.

    Weird, isn’t it?

  23. misguided haters….Jets aren’t expecting nor in need of vintage Rodgers…..just a guy that can complete more passes than the collection from last year. A lot of dementia out there – Rodgers played with a bum finger last year……maybe just maybe that was a big contributor to results. Hell, if you take 2022 Rodgers and had him on the Jets, they’d have made the playoffs. Sit back kids and just watch.

I believe you are correct in your analysis — but — but — the Jets ARE paying the guy north of $60 million this season, and likely have given up their first round draft pick to Green Bay in the 2024 draft, so are understandably expecting more than simply “making the playoffs.”

  25. Hackett sounds like he’s passing the blame already. He’s scared.

  26. Maybe the Jets should hire Hackett a ‘Cohesion Coach’ to help him figure out what exactly that is and how to achieve it.

The Jets are paying Rodgers $1,165,000 this season.

  28. 1. The Jets Oline isn’t very good, remind me who their starting Tackles are?

    2. Other than Garret Wilson, what receivers do they have? Corey Davis, ok, I guess, if he can stay on the field.

    3. TEs are … Uzomah and Conklin? Not very good.

    4. The defense was excellent last year, but that kind of exceptional performance tends to regress.

With Aaron Rodgers I can see the jets winning 9,10 games and making the playoffs. I just don’t see a deep playoff run. How will they do against the types of strong teams you encounter in the playoffs?

  29. Breece Hall is coming off a ACL injury from late October 2022. Don’t see him having a big impact in 2023.
Can Becton stay healthy? Can he get right?

Rodgers will make those other pieces better. I just don’t think it will be enough in the East.

Also, I don’t see Sauce getting another All Pro nod.
