Joey Porter Sr. was drafted by the Steelers in 1999. Joey Porter Jr. was drafted by the Steelers in 2023. Father is thrilled to see his son following in his footsteps.

“I wanted it to be the Steelers so bad for him,” Porter Sr. told Steelers.com. “But they did such a good job of not letting us know. I have over 50 friends in that building that know me personally and I got nothing from anybody to say, ‘man, be ready, it’s coming,’ or anything. We wanted it. Trust me, that’s what we wanted. But we just didn’t feel like we could say for sure that’s what it was going to be.”

Although Porter Sr. left Pittsburgh to sign with Miami in 2007 and then went to Arizona in 2010, he returned to Pittsburgh after retiring as a player, spent five years on the Steelers’ coaching staff, and raised Joey Jr. primarily in Pennsylvania.

“It was amazing. I mean, absolutely amazing,” said Porter Sr. “The excitement was crazy because we’ve been back in Pittsburgh for a while. It’s where he played his high school ball, he played his college ball in Pennsylvania. Now to actually be drafted by the team who brought us to Pittsburgh, to Pennsylvania, in the first place. It’s the first locker room he ever walked into and now he’s walking in there because he works for the team. I mean, this is absolutely amazing. I am at a loss of words, actually.”

Porter Sr. won’t be at a loss for words as he cheers on his son in Pittsburgh, for many years to come.

  1. JP Sr. has been nothing but a standup individual.
An exemplary human being of the highest character.
A shame that his statue isn’t in the Pittsburgh Airport.

  2. I LOVE this man. He is the guy who when his sons got “Participation Awards” literally threw them out and basically told them (paraphrasing) “you get awards for accomplishments as a player and a team… not for just showing up”.
    PRICELESS !

  3. Let’s hope Junior isn’t one of the dirtiest players in the league like senior was

You are confusing Porter with Harrison.

  5. I wonder in his excitement and enthusiasm how many people he spit on?

  6. Waiting for someone to claim he was on the field throwing punches at Bengal players when he was a coach. About as true as Tomlin tripping Jacoby Jones.

  7. If Jr is anything like his old man, they got a good one.

    Porter Sr was an animal.

    *not a steelers fan..

  8. I think Steelers fans hope he gets more than 1 interception every 4 years, (like he did in college)

  9. Sr. was notable for being a hot head player in Pittsburgh that was prone to ill timed personal foul penalties & a complete sham in his time in Miami – ask any Fish fan. Let’s hope Jr. has a better career.

  10. I don’t think they intended to draft him.
They moved up to get the OT.
They probably couldn’t believe he was there top of the Friday morning.
He’ll be linked forever with the Claypool trade that ended up getting the Steelers essentially a second first round pick.

That, i believe, was James Harrison.

  12. Thank the Bears for the draft pick, sure hope Claypool works out(does not look good so far for the Bears.

  13. Joey Porter sr. was a great player but my favorite moment of his Steelers career was when he was working as an assistant coach. He came onto the field to help Antonio Brown after the dirtiest player of the last quarter century, Vonteze Burfict, illegally laid him out with a forearm shiver to the head. Joey knew that just seeing him between the white lines would totally unravel the classless and mentally weak Bengals, and indeed they committed a personal foul at the sight of him, moving Pittsburgh into range for the winning field goal. The Steelers organization has of course had many greater wins, so that one was just a very small one in the stack. But it was memorable, for cementing the Bengals identity as a team that curses itself over and over again. Will they actually sign Joe Burrow? Don’t count on it. But if they do, rest assured they won’t protect him.

  14. I can’t wait to see Chase, OBJ, Cooper cook Jr. on the field. That’s a tough division.

  15. Porter Sr had a great career in Pittsburgh. Coach Bill Cowher called him the heart and soul of the defense on their Super Bowl winning team in 06. I think Porter Jr is going to have a great career there as well.
