Robert Saleh: Trade down to 15 didn’t matter, Jets would’ve drafted Will McDonald at 13

USA Today

As part of the Aaron Rodgers trade, the Jets moved down from the 13th pick to the 15th pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. Jets head coach Robert Saleh says that didn’t matter.

The Jets took defensive end Will McDonald at No. 15, and Saleh told Rich Eisen that McDonald would have been their pick at No. 13.

“The difference between 13 and 15 in the way everything shook out made no difference to us,” Saleh said.

That flies in the face of the widespread belief that the player the Jets wanted was offensive tackle Broderick Jones, who went No. 14 when the Steelers traded up with the Patriots to get him. But if Saleh is to be believed, McDonald was the guy they wanted all along.

  1. Yeah sure. What’s he going to say? “We got fleeced in this trade, the guy we picked was our backup choice.”?

  2. Amazing that more isn’t said about this pick and how much of a reach it was. Instead, people want to keep focusing on the picks of the Lions at 12 and 18.

  3. Yea right. Everyone knows you’re full of it Saleh. Rodgers needed a tackle. The Patriots traded that pick for less than what they could have gotten just to school the lowly Jets. You have no line and Rodgers is going to take a beating. This time next year back to Zach Wilson.

  4. Yes everyone always get their guy they would have taken anyway. Literally zero people ever claim the player they wanted to draft got picked.

  5. Yeah…keep telling yourself that Saleh, we all know who you were taking

  6. If coaches/gms were to believed they all got the player they wanted in the 1st round because it makes zero sense to say otherwise

  7. “But if Saleh is to be believed”? Why shouldn’t you believe him?
It was all mock draft speculation that had an OT going to the Jets.

  8. A lot of the widespread belief before any draft is just smoke. Show me one mock draft in the last 50 years that actually held up. Still waiting.

  9. More proof the Jets are doomed being run by a former DC w something to prove. You don’t pass on a franchise tackle for a LB.

  10. The Jets brass can’t even be honest about Rodgers “wish list”. Why would we believe you on this?

Next we’ll hear how they would have signed Randall Cobb without Rodgers because Cobb is still a great player.

  11. The Jets, Saleh and Aaron Rodgers are made for each other.

    They are all delusional.

  12. I find that hard to believe. But tell yourself whatever you need to do you can sleep at night Bob.

  13. Riiiiiiight. These jets are so terribly managed. The fans deserve better. The owner need to be fired.

  14. Widespread belief? who is the insider giving out their intentions in the draft? seems everyone knew who they really wanted and now the coach is being called a liar.bottom line is if they wanted Rodgers that was the price they paid for him.

  15. Sure man. Whatever you say. Pats got an extra pick AND their man out of the deal so the deal which was the point. How it played for the Jets was never anything more than a sideshow. I doubt BB was bummed about it, but I don’t think he factored it into the thinking either.

  16. So they would have reached even higher than 15 for McDonald? He was projected as a late end of round 1 guy…

  17. Not necessarily. The quote is: “The difference between 13 and 15 in the way everything shook out made no difference to us”. All that means is that the Jets had McDonald and Jones graded the same.

  18. And Lukas Van Ness would’ve been available in the 2nd round.

  19. The Jets wanted Broderick Jones. Saleh isn’t about to acknowledge they “settled” for McDonald, even though that’s exactly what the did.

  20. And Lukas Van Ness would’ve been available in the 2nd round.

  21. This is the sort of thing that happens when you have no leverage.

  22. Hot Take: Robert Saleh is not a good NFL head coach. He’s more of a DC like Todd Bowles and Vic Fangio. He doesn’t manage game situations well.

  23. maybe if he didn’t keep talking about how it doesn’t matter…[insert eye-roll emoji here]

  24. Give me a break. Douglas reached in the mid rd and that’s the end of it.

    Horrible pick

  25. All indications are that the Jets really wanted Gibbs. They envisioned him in a Deebo role. When Gibbs went to the Lions at 12 reports say McDonald was the Jetsman but they wanted to tradeback but could not get any value. McDonald fits the Jets system as a wide 9 rusher perfect. He is rated as the best pure pass rusher in the draft. His weakness is he is small and has done well against the run. But, with theJets rotation using a ton.of DEs he fits well. With Huff and Lawson leaving in 2024 McDonald fits a need. Bigger question is how are the Jets going to pay Rodgers 107 million in 2024?

  26. Will McDonald was being mocked to the CHiefs with the 31st pick. Time will tell whether or not the Jets reached big to take McDonald.

  27. One more screw up and lie like this and Rodgers will make sure to only show up halfway through preseason. A screw up again and Rodgers will demand days off from practice during the season.

The Jets are so poorly managed it’s unbelievable. They love wasting top 10-15 1dt rd picks.

  29. I just didn’t see Will McDonald as a top 15 pick. In all honesty I thought he was a late 1st Rd ,.. very early 2nd Rd pick.

  30. BB won the draft. We all know he’ll shock the world with an AFC title while Mac Jones takes MVP. Place your bets!

  31. I’m growing exhausted with the constant comments from Saleh. Does he have any time left to actually coach or does he just talk to the press 24/7?

  32. What did we expect him to say, “Yeah, Belichick ruined us as soon as he dealt that pick to Pittsburgh… We gave up on the draft as soon as that happened.”

  33. Some delusional poster on here blamed him that the Jets are run by a former DC this pick was made by the GM please learn who to blame when you point fingers. otherwise you just just prove clueless you are.

  34. Mock drafts for the fans are not necessarily important to get the teams picks right but to teach the uneducated average fan were a players correct draft slot is like what round a top 5 pick a top 10 pick a mid rd pick and a late 1st rd pick . These are simple lessons any fan can learn but sadly 2/3 rds aren’t smart enough to comprehend.

  35. As a Jets fan the Rodgers’ trade continues to be a cascading catastrophic disaster in the making.

The Jets didn’t need any more defensive guys they had a good D in 2022.

What they needed was an O line that could block someone with more talent than I have (and I’m 64).

Shades of the Parcel’s and Ryan’s drafts. Keep drafting D players and ignore the O. Yeah that works soooo well long term.

Thanks Woody, thanks a lot ……….

  36. The Jets front office didn’t need to swap picks to land Rodgers. That was the true crime here. They got worked by both GB and NE.

They didn’t waste the pick. Macdonald is still indeed a very good prize to come away with. But Jones was better and really was who they wanted, and rightfully so.

  38. Why is it so hard for people to believe they would like him at 13 if they liked him at 15? Will McDonald is the all-time leader in sacks for a Power 5 conference (Big XII) with one more career sack than an EXTREMELY noteworthy player (Von Miller)… and the Jets think he did that playing out of position.

I am going to assume the guy who aced the Draft last year hasn’t regressed. I am confident the media underestimated the player here.

  40. The number one goal is to make money. To do that one must be employed and retain employment. To make money in the NFL, one needs to win more than they lose. To do that one must lie(not be truthful) when it is in their best interest to do so to win to retain employment.

That’s entirely inaccurate. In your dream world scenario then either all those mocks had Gibbs and Bijan going top 12 and Levis dropping to the top of the 2nd right? Or are you saying those mockers are smarter than teams and improperly drafted? The mocks are that person’s best guess to where a player will go by range and by team but in no way shows a players true value like you said. Maybe that’s a simple lesson you’ll be smart enough to comprehend 🤷‍♂️

  42. The only team that can say it and believe it is Carolina with the #1 pick.

  43. Total BS from a total BS organization. They screwed up that trade like only the Jets could…

  44. I’m skeptical. But none of us really has any clue on this and anyone who thinks they do is kidding themselves. Just because there is consensus among the pundits doesn’t mean any of them were right. And not far fetched to think a team that has defensive minded head coach, has focused quite a bit in the draft on defense in the past, and spent a ton of capital prior to the draft on offense might might actually go with BPA on their board. Anyone who acts like they know what the Jets thinking was on this should be viewed with at least as much skepticism and they’re casting Saleh’s way.

  45. I can see Rodgers now, screaming at Saleh on the sideline after his first violent, blindside sack, looking through the earhole of his helmet “THANKS FOR PICKING AN EDGE RUSHER!”

Serious question: Have the Jets ever traded back in the last 20 years? It’s like they are afraid to do it. They’ve been running away from successful teambuilding concepts since Woody Johnson took over. He’s inept. Never had a job in his life.

This draft was described as the guy who goes 20 and beyond is the same guy in Rd 2 or even Rd3.

It is highly comical, probably not just to me, that the media and Jets front office has people convinced the team is loaded with talent when they could not beat NE and the worst redzone offense in football last year.

If they have been so loaded, how could that happen?

Your OL, TEs, RB depth, Safeties, and LBs are not great. WR, DL and CB appear to be good.

This is a very odd time in the world where media entities are actually assisting trying to create alternate realities which aren’t.

This McDonald character may be good but he looks like a one trick pony to me as 4-3 subrusher.

1st rd picks in the middle of the round shouldn’t be that.

Sort of like what they do with Belichick and the Patriots. Very odd indeed.

  48. Never let anyone outside the family know what your thinking. Coach needs to get with the Don Vito program!!!

  49. As someone who follows the Jets, Saleh makes factually questionable statement from time to time. I worry that his player evaluation judgement negatively impacts the GMs player acquisition.
