J.J. Watt hints that, after leaving the Texans, he was interested in joining the Packers

After defensive tackle J.J. Watt left the Texans, he landed with the Cardinals. Some thought he’d land with the Packers, in his home state of Wisconsin.

Appearing recently on the Rise and Schein podcast with Adam Schein, Watt was asked whether he thought about finishing his career with the Packers.

“There’s certainly a part of me that thought about that,” Watt said. “There’s a story for another day.”

Schein pressed for more.

“I can’t share,” Watt said. “That’s a story for like a memoir someday. There was certainly a thought for that. It’s just sometimes don’t materialize in a way that it all is gonna — sometimes it just doesn’t materialize.”

Schein tried one last question: “Did you think there was a chance and maybe you wanted it and they didn’t?”

“Sometimes, things just don’t materialize,” Watt said. “Sometimes things just don’t happen the way fairy tales are supposed to happen.”

So, yes, it appears Watt wanted it and the Packers didn’t. Why they didn’t apparently will be addressed in “Why The Packers Prevented My Fairy Tale: The J.J. Watt Story.”

  1. The Packers already had several big $$ players on the roster at the time. The Cardinals didn’t and could pay him what he wanted. Simple as that

  2. Watt is a great Wisconsin kid.
He was one helluva football player, as well as a special overall person.
Loved him as a Badger, but I honestly never saw his game translating as well as it did at the pro level.
    But, boy did it ever!

I, along with a majority of Packer fans, would’ve loved to see him end his career in the Green and Gold.
But the pragmatic side of me understands why it didn’t happen.
Money, coupled with his spate of late career injuries, scared off a few suitors and the Packers were in no financial condition to roll the dice at that point.
    Simply a missed opportunity.

It’s sure a sweet thought though, as far as fairytales go. 😉

  3. Great player, but apparently winning a Super Bowl was never that important to him. Arizona and then Green Bay?

  4. Alright JJ, you were a great player, but you haven’t done anything the past few years except get the trading table a good work out.
You hung them up, now shut it up, nobody cares.

  5. Watt got what he chose, which was the most money he could get, and it was a lot. Only later do you realize that time is far more precious, and no amount of money can buy to a do-over. He could have chosen a different story for his life but he chose cash. No reason to feel sorry for him. The only “what if?” is what if we had different priorities.

He hasn’t done anything the past few years? Lol he had 12.5 sacks last yr which tied him for 8th in the league on the season.

  7. This is what happens when you don’t have an owner. Everyone is always in CYA mode and no1 will push the chips all in.

  8. JJ Watt signed a $28MM contract with Arizona – no way Green Bay had the cap for that since the huge deal that was given to Rodgers. Even a hometown discount wouldn’t have worked. JJ was a great player – at the end of his career – he was a shell of whom he was. That being said – I would have loved to see him in Green & Gold

Your entirely misrepresenting his deal. Watt counted 4.9 million against Arizonas cap his 1st yr(when you said “no way green bay had the cap”), 16.9 in his 2nd yr and then just under 3.6 this coming year. So he counted 21.8 millions against the cap over 2 years and only about 25.5 over 3 yrs. That’s not even taking into account the blatantly obvious fact the structure was setup to how Arizona preferred so GB easily could’ve had a lower cap number in yr 2 by having a higher cap number in yr 1.

  10. Doubt he would have moved the needle much for GB. Joe Barry is an unmitigated disaster.

  11. Great player. Glad he fleeced the Cardinals for the money. 4 of his last 5 years in Houston he had 6 sacks or fewer. The money that was reported back then for him to sign with GB would have required GB to dump a number of players. No way GB signs some of Rodgers posse if Watt became a Packer. It is good fantasy football GM stuff, but reality is young studs like Alexander, Jenkins, Gary deserved the money that Watt would have consumed in the cap.

    ==========

    Was this the missing piece?

13.5 sacks.. 23 tackles for loss.. 2 forced fumbles…. 10 more missed games..

    …. $28,000,000 for that?!

Love the guy. Definitely would have bought his jersey. But thats not value.

  13. Every player wants to play for the Packers.
    ===========

Maybe when Brett and Reggie were here. Or Aaron and Chuck.

    Now?….

  14. I would still like to see him come back to Houston. He makes the city where he plays, better!

  15. Yeah. Green Bay doesn’t have an owner and no one will push the chips all in. You’d think they would have learned to emulate our Vikings after we went all in on the Herschel Walker trade.

    _________

Yeah, having an owner is the absolute difference maker.
The last 62 years has certainly proven out well for your Vikings. 🤣
