Kevin O’Connell wants Kirk Cousins to embrace his ability to extend plays

During a Tuesday interview of Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell on #PFTPM, O’Connell was asked two specific questions about quarterback Kirk Cousins.

First, what is his best attribute for which he doesn’t get enough credit. Second, what can he do to improve in 2023?

As to the second question, O’Connell pointed to one thing — Cousins trusting his ability to make plays with his legs.

“I think he showed it at times last year,” O’Connell said, “but that athleticism to maybe not impact the game the way some of the great athletes that are playing quarterback in the NFL right now impact, but there are some plays where I think he doesn’t give himself enough credit of his ability to extend.

“I think back to that red-zone scramble for a touchdown against the Cardinals last year on a critical third down or even keeping drives alive, stealing a first down. When I call a bad play and he’s got nobody there to convert and he finds a way to extend the play and maybe use his legs to either get that first down or extend a play and make a playoff schedule with his arm, I think he’s capable of doing those things and I think he’s — that’s going to be something his comfort, his understanding year one to year two you just have that much more awareness of not only where your eleven guys are on the field, but defensively how it all works together and you can continue by any means necessary to attack whatever voids and vacancies may be out there for us on each individual play.”

On the positive side, O’Connell raised two points.

“Well, to me he’s got two things that are main requirements that I believe to play quarterback in the NFL,” O’Connell said. “He’s extremely accurate and he’s tough and durable. I don’t know if you can really, quantitatively put that second part into a statistic. I can just tell you that he’s played a lot of football in his career. He consistently is out there every Sunday competing to win football games and can handle the rigors of playing the quarterback position in an NFL offense where we put a lot on his plate. He has a ton to do with our success as an offense and then you can just never undervalue the ability to throw the football at a world-class level and put it where you want to put it location-wise.

“You think back to some of the big throws he made a year ago in critical moments that won us a lot of football games. You know, when we win 13 games, you can go back and find throws that I don’t think a lot of people are making at that type of level, consistent-wise, playing in this position from an NFL pocket, and being able to do the things that that we ask him to do, which are a lot. So, I think those two things are the starting point and then we can get into a lot of as far as his ability to process information, his understanding of defenses, and then ultimately just his ability to run the show and be one of our core leaders of our football team.”

Whether Cousins continues to be Minnesota’s quarterback beyond 2023 remains to be seen. He does have a chance to build on his first year with O’Connell, and to make it obvious to everyone in the organization that Cousins should keep the job he has held since 2018 beyond what will be his sixth season in Minnesota.

  1. Maybe Kirk should pretend every play is in garbage time. He’s the king of padding his stats when he’s down by four scores and getting himself some fully guaranteed contracts as a result.

  2. I’ve been waiting for Cousins to raise the level of those around him forever.
If you can’t move in the pocket and escape pressure, you’re doomed.
Kirk has taken so many critical sacks with no pocket movement, it’s painful to see.
A QB has to raise his team up when everything is up in flames, and that’s just not Cousins..

  3. He averages 7 yards rushing a game. He’s 35. They tried to convince Cousins to scramble more two pre-seasons ago. More of the same.

  4. I want Kirk Cousin to go away forever. Neither I nor O’Connell are going to get our wish any time soon.

  5. Cousins is a really good QB. I hope he can finally make it to the Super Bowl… hope is fading. However, if Flores can guide the defense to middle of the pack, they should have a decent chance at winning the division. That would be a quick turnaround. The defense from last season was… atrocious. Even so, getting there is only half the battle. Taking advantage of having a home game in the playoffs, and build momentum… O’Connell saw how it was done. Maybe he can repeat that feat. Kirk needs to become Kirko chains in the postseason for that to happen.

  6. As a fanatic Viking fan since 1961, I’m probably one of the few fans that really likes Kirk Cousins. If O’Connell can bring him out of his shell, I believe Kirk can be one of the best Quarterbacks in the league.

  7. Kirk Cousins is no spring chicken. And the legs are the first to go. He may be past his prime insofar as moving out of the pocket and extending plays goes. Coach O”Connell may be asking for more than what his QB can deliver.

  8. And many people will ignore that horrible defense and state Cousins should have scored 4 TDs instead of 3 to tie the Giants, and then 5 TDs to win. And if he loses in the SB those same people will say he can’t win the big one. And if he wins a SB, with any team, they’ll say it was because of the other 52 guys.

  9. I know Cousins’ height and weight is listed at 6’3” and 210 lbs., but he plays small. He always looks like a boy playing a man’s game.

  10. Kirk is gonna Kirk. He does just enough to collect that big ole’ paycheck but doesn’t seem interested in doing anything extra to extend the teams life.

  11. The reason that Cousins has stayed injury free is the very thing O’Connell wants to change. Cousins is at his best when he can get rid of the football quickly before he gets pressure. He doesn’t like to hold the ball or take off because he doesn’t like to get hit. Look at the games he struggled in, he was under pressure and he either threw it away or went down if the defense got close. Not taking hits is a great way to stay healthy as Cousins has proved over the years and don’t think at this latter stage of his career he’s going to change.

    _________

Give an example of that from last season. He led eight fourth-quarter comebacks and won 11 one-score games, so those don’t work. His stats were terrible in the losses to Philadelphia, Dallas, and Green Bay. He didn’t even play in the fourth quarter against Dallas and played half the fourth quarter against Green Bay. The one loss in which he put up good fourth-quarter stats was at Detroit, but they were only down by 8 going into the fourth. So maybe you don’t really know what you’re talking about.

You mean like when he gets hit more than any quarterback in the NFL and continues to get up and lead fourth-quarter comebacks? There aren’t a lot of quarterbacks that run over linebackers.

That’s incorrect. Cousins took more hits than any quarterback in the NFL last year. That doesn’t happen if he’s throwing the ball away whenever he gets pressure. Maybe you should look at the games in which he didn’t struggle. He holds the ball long enough for his receiver to get where he needs to be and he takes a lot of hits while making big-time completions.

  16. And if he loses in the SB those same people will say he can’t win the big one.
    ++++++
He’s won one playoff game in 11 seasons.
Stop talking about cousins and super bowls.

  17. Look at his last play in 2022 – 4th & 8. A poor play called and Kirk checked down to Hock that ends the season. That is an example of when Kirk had to extend a play. The Vikings defense will be better under Brian Flores in 2023 I believe and this will help Kirk too.
