Todd Monken: Lamar Jackson is working hard; we’ll get him up to speed when he gets here

The Ravens are installing a new offense under coordinator Todd Monken, who was hired in February.

While Lamar Jackson has signed his contract to make him the highest-paid player in league history, he has not been attending Baltimore’s voluntary offseason program.

Monken spoke with the media on Wednesday and told reporters, via Jeff Zrebiec of TheAthletic.com, that the team is in constant communication with the players who aren’t in the building.

But there is still going to be some catching up to do for Jackson and others like receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

“Well first off, we’re excited about the guys who are here,” Monken said, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “I know Lamar’s working hard. I know the guys who aren’t here are working hard. They’re pros. When they’re here, they’re here. We look forward to getting them here and getting them up to speed to what we’re doing offensively.

“I think that’s probably the biggest challenge, but it’s football. When they get here, they get here, and we’ll get them up to speed.”

Monken added that he’s hopeful Jackson and Beckham will report “in a short amount of time.”

The Ravens are currently in Phase II of the offseason program, which means they can work with coaches on the field. But they can’t go against a defense.

So, there’s still plenty of time for Jackson to get familiar with the club’s new scheme, Beckham, and the rest of Baltimore’s new weapons in the spring.

  1. I understand these sessions are voluntary. I don’t understand how these non attendees can look their teammates in the eyes and say they’re all about winning.

  2. The only things Lamar is doing is counting his crazy jack and saying stupid stuff like “I’m going to pass for 6K yards”

  3. “I know Lamar’s working hard. I know the guys who aren’t here are working hard. They’re pros”

A pro doesn’t bail in his team and refuse to travel to a postseason game because of a bruised ego

Is there any evidence that attending these voluntary camps in the spring leads to winning in the fall?

  6. For a guy that doesn’t know the offense it is essential he be there as much as possible.

  7. Lamar holding out already for a better full guarantee contract

  8. Wow. Very different tone than the one Rodgers receives for skipping voluntary workouts.

  9. Last I checked, Aaron seems to be enjoying his new surroundings in the Jets organization and getting to know his new team which is a total 180 from the Rogers that spent so many years wasting his time in Green Bay. Don’t know why Rogers ends up in a Ravens/Lamar Jackson thread, deflect much Ravens’s fan? It isn’t a good look, it seems like you are taking a page out of the Packers reaction to criticism book by deflecting all criticisms in to negatively bashing the Vikings for zero reason to forget how much the criticisms are true and their beloved Packers are perennial playoff choke artists. Lamar should be taking a page out of Aaron’s current way of doing team building by showing up to get to know the players even though you don’t have to. Or you could just chill at home while counting your bag-o-cash and wonder why you season ends early late season because there is no team chemistry. Whatever, have fun with your overpaid cosplaying QB…I mean running back…whatever he is.

  10. People are hilarious overreacting to this stuff. It’s “classroom” work, lifting, etc. the majority of vets on all teams don’t go to this stuff because they are already doing it at home. If you live in the area then sure you could be there but no reason to otherwise if you’re an established vet. Now if he didn’t show up at all to voluntary OTA’s then there’d be an issue since it’s a new OC and offense. My guess is he’ll be there on May 22nd. In the words of ARodgers….R E L A X.

  11. WOW! Lamar gets all that money and he STILL can’t be bothered to show up to the voluntary program?? I bet that really makes his teammates happy!
