Tom Telesco: “Nothing’s changed” with Austin Ekeler

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler got permission to seek out a trade to a team willing to give him a new contract in March, but nothing materialized ahead of the draft and it doesn’t sound like any deal is imminent now that the draft is over.

General Manager Tom Telesco was asked where things stood with Ekeler during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show and he said that it’s been status quo on both the trade and contract fronts.

“Nothing’s changed,” Telesco said. “His situation is unique. I completely understand that, which is why we kind of allowed them to kind of look and see if there was something out there available. We had no intent, no interest of trading him, but, fully knowing his situation, said go ahead and do it.”

Telesco said that “there is definitely a point in everyone’s career that you feel you’re not being compensated appropriately” whether you’re a football player or not. He recounted renegotiating his contract with the Colts earlier in his career and then-Colts G.M. Bill Polian offering him a salary lower than he was hoping to get. Telesco said that he now understands “there’s just so many factors that go into someone’s salary that it is not always a reflection of how they feel about you as a person.”

That anecdote may be of little solace to Ekeler as he enters his seventh season as an NFL running back, but the lack of movement on either front makes it likely that he’ll have to play out this season before getting a new deal from the Chargers or anyone else.

  1. More fuel for the fire that proves the Chargers are one of the worst run teams in the nfl, because as always “nothing’s changed.”

  2. Look at the chargers running back depth. If he holds out he’ll have an upgraded contract by week 3 guaranteed

  3. This is one of the few situations where it makes sense for the player to hold out as long as possible

  4. Where is “he is grossly underpaid” portion of this article? Seems there is always a line or two in that regard.

  5. The game changes and the value of some skill sets will change too. In today’s game great run stopping MLs like HOFers like Dick Butkis and Matt Millen wouldn’t even get a starting job because they couldn’t cover today’s pass catching TEs and RBs. RBs just aren’t as valuable an asset as they once were and Ekler needs to understand that.

What does Ekeler have to understand? Ekeler has scored 38 tds in the last 2 years, he deserves a massive raise. Running back are getting screwed over in today’s NFL. If Ekeler were a wide receiver who scored 38 tds in the last 2 years, teams would be falling over themselves offering $30 million plus a season. Are his touchdowns somehow less than 6 points because he is a running back? The whole idea of positional value is a joke. A player who scores 38 touchdowns in 2 years should get a new contract, regardless of position.

  7. Swapping Ekeler for Cook makes sense (as long as Cook can be restructured to what Ekeler is currently making), change of scenery for both and maybe they’ll stop whining

  8. I’d love to swap Cook for Ekeler! What would it take to make this happen Quasimoto??? Do something right this off-season instead of just signing slugs and camp bodies!

  9. Good for the Chargers not to pay a 28 year old rb. Yes he might be the most versatile back in football, and they certainly need him, but don’t overpay and get stuck in a bad deal. They have to pay Herbert as well.
