Traditional CBS/AFC and Fox/NFC alignments will apply in the postseason

The 2023 schedule will be the first one that wipes out the traditional connection between CBS and the AFC, and Fox and the NFC. Sort of. Maybe.

During last year’s media conference call regarding the crafting of the 2022 regular-season schedule, NFL executive Mike North said that, come 2023, the fairly new dynamic of cross-flexing games among the Sunday afternoon networks would become irrelevant.

“I think all you guys know, when the new media deals kick in, the notion of an AFC team on the road, that game’s  a CBS game, or an NFC team on the road, that game belongs to Fox, that’s gone next year,” North said. “That no longer exists. All games are jump balls, all games are free agents.”

That’s a broad statement — all games are jump balls, all games are free agents. But there apparently will be limitations to the otherwise unlimited breadth of the “all games are jump balls, all games are free agents” remark.

Fox executive Michael Mulvihill recently said on Twitter that, even though any given game is eligible to appear on any network, “Fox/NFC and CBS/AFC still have appearance minimums per team that keep the traditional conference affiliations relevant.” Mulvihill added that he “expect[s] to see a lot of misunderstanding on this point.”

Yeah. For good reason. “All games are jump balls, all games are free agents.”

If there’s any misunderstanding, the league created it and/or allowed it to exist. “All games are jump balls, all games are free agents” should have been preceded or followed by “subject to appearance minimums per team that keep the traditional conference affiliations relevant.”

Along those same lines, and perhaps not surprisingly given Mulvihill’s tweet, Drew Magary of Defector.com reports that, for the playoffs, the traditional relationships apply. NFC playoffs on Fox, AFC playoffs on CBS. (Subject, of course, to the games that slide to NBC or ABC/ESPN.)

For the 2023 regular-season schedule, the assignment of games should help clear up any misunderstandings. To the extent any misunderstandings linger into Friday, there will be another media conference call during which the concept of appearance minimums that will keep the traditional conference affiliations relevant will be addressed.

  1. “If there’s any misunderstanding, the league created it”

I think this should be the NFL’s tagline.

  2. I am glad to hear this. I know that cross-flexes from CBS to Fox (and vice versa) have been used in recent years to help balance out Sundays when one of these networks had more than their share of good matchups, but Bengals-Chiefs just feels right on CBS, and 49ers-Eagles feels right on Fox.

Or is it the media jumped the gun on the reporting rather than getting a full story? Besides that idk why they should be told that 1st media announcement should include EVERYTHING rather than doling out partial information over multiple days to continue to be talked about when those reporting on that 1st announcement dole out the info over multiple days.

  4. What is the rationale for doing away with the NFC/Fox – AFC/CBS affiliation in the first place?

  5. No the media did not jump to conclusions on this one. A representative of the league literally said all games are up for grabs. What part of that was to be misrepresented by the media?

    Amen Brother

  7. let see. Al Michaels on Amazon….Joe and Troy on ESPN.. Tirico on NBC.Romo and Nance. on CBS Who the hell’s on Fox? That’s what confuses me…Romo and Nance doing a Cowboys- 49ers really confuses me….

  8. Fox Sports hatin’ because CBS had Tom Brady to showcase for 20 seasons.

Not they want to make sure that they can get in on the Mahomes action.

This is the reason why the regular season TV rules were changed.

Fox Sports: Home of the worse sports broadcasting in the world.

  9. I really don’t like this, how long is it going to take Terry and Howie to get to know the AFC teams in any meaningful way? At least a couple years.

  10. 30 years Fox had the NFC, the NFC has the biggest TV markets and CBS never complained. Now that the NFC sucks, Fox wants AFC games. Typical

    +++++++
it’s to bring in more corporate bidders (streaming services) to buy up the NFL product unfettered by the legacy networks previous agreements.

I thought since the NFC seems weak and the AFC seems deep they wouldn’t want an afternoon game where like Chargers-Jets gets demoted for a Bengals-Bills esque game on CBS meanwhile on FOX they have to play Giants v Commanders

What is the rationale for doing away with the NFC/Fox – AFC/CBS affiliation in the first place?

Market size. The NFC has more of the larger markets, and thus more potential viewers.
    • NFC: NY (Giants), Philly, DC, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, SF, LA (Rams), Atlanta – 9 of their 16 teams are major markets, regardless of how good the team is
    • AFC: Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, KC, Nashville, Buffalo – 6 best teams are small markets

  14. Old enough to remember NBC doing AFC and the late afternoon Charger Seahawks game with Don Criqui or Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen.

Madden and Summerall always seemingly doing NFC East games for CBS.

  15. So when are we to expect the NFL to hold a three day event of these TV executives bringing their teams in to discuss network placement of the games?

  16. Make no mistake. ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, Amazon would be replaced if a Saudi prince offered a few billion more and broad cast the games in Arabic. Goodell God is money and could care less about the product or fans.

  17. Prefer a Fox game personally Only because of nostalgia with the old 9ER vs Dallas, Green Bay rivalries having Madden and Summerall call the game just felt like a big game

I like NBC, collinsworth is good. Say what you want about Al Michaels but, he’s OG and always finds away to drop the gambling line in subtly.

CBS isn’t bad because Nantz is legit
