Will someone sign Matt Araiza?

Punter Matt Araiza learned in December that he will not face criminal charges arising from allegations of gang rape dating back to his days at San Diego State. More recently, documents regarding the decision not to prosecute Araiza indicated that he was not even present when the alleged gang rape occurred — and that he had left the premises roughly an hour earlier.

Despite a pending civil lawsuit, Araiza faces no incarceration. He faces no NFL suspension. He doesn’t even face the possibility of paid leave, through placement on the Commissioner-Exempt list. He faces a single civil suit, one that would not impact his NFL employment regardless of its outcome.

So will someone sign him? On one hand, he plays one of the most interchangeable positions in football. Punters are everywhere. He’s the only one of them facing this kind of off-field situation. While there’s every reason to believe he has the ability to perform at a high level in the NFL, is that enough to get a team to take a chance on him?

The Bills moved on from Araiza, a sixth-round pick in 2022, following the filing of the civil suit alleging gang rape. At the time, criminal charges remained possible.

Now, with criminal charges off the table, there’s nothing that keeps him from playing, other than P.R. considerations and the basic question of whether he brings enough to a team to justify any blowback.

The facts and circumstances, given our broader political climate, makes this case more grist for the red state/blue state mill. The more polarizing Araiza’s situation becomes, however, the more difficult it could be for him to find a way back onto an NFL roster.

  1. You’re correct it is very polarizing.
Certain groups had him guilty within the first 24 hours. Meanwhile, those same groups are very supportive to see men disguised as women athletes, taking over biological women’s sports. Taking their jobs, taking their scholarships, taking their records, ultimately ruining some their lives. But nothing but crickets on that issue.

  2. If you’re worried about the backlash of signing someone who DIDN’T commit a crime because at one point someone thought he maybe was at the party where the crime might have happened you don’t deserve to be a part of building an NFL roster.

  3. His position works against him. Nobody wants a distraction from the punter. It’s why the bills were right to cut him when they did. There’s bigger fish to fry then answering questions about your punter.

The math is simple. Once the distraction exceeds any given player’s talent, the league moves on. Doesn’t matter if you are TO or kapernick. For a punter, it doesn’t take long to exceed their contribution.

  4. Not only should he be signed to an NFL roster but he should receive a VERY public apology from Brandon Beane and the entire Buffalo Bills organization. He should also pursue a defamation suit against his accuser seeking punitive damages for lost income.

  5. Buffalo jumped the gun. The “guilty until proven innocent” trend needs to end immediately.

  6. This guy had his dream stolen by an unfounded accusation. He has witnesses and a police investigation saying he wasn’t there when the alleged incident occurred. Who would complain if their favorite team gave him a tryout?

  7. I guess in today’s world where you can factually and physically be proven guilty of a felony crime in a court of law and then not serve any time nothing makes any sense.
This kid was not guilty, did nothing wrong and was only proven guilty in public opinion yet he has to wonder if he will get a job doing what he was drafted to do?? Yea okay this makes sense!!! I hope he files a lawsuit on everyone that slandered him in the media.

  8. Absolutely. Proven innocent. The NFL has given second chances to murderers and spousal abusers.

  9. How is it possibly polarizing if he’s now not only not getting charged, but literally completely exonerated? Sheesh.

  10. I don’t know why he still isn’t signed yet either. There’s bound to be an NFL team somewhere looking for a punter. Maybe the N.Y. Giants should take a look at him & sign him. A punter with this kind of talent you don’t find every day.

  11. Thw Bengals were fortunate to have a stable punter in Huber for many years, which we took for granted, and then found out that poor punter play, especially in the playoffs against a team loke the Chiefs, can lose you a game.

There may be a lot of punters, but Araiza isn’t your run of the mill punter. I wouldn’t mind the Bengals signing him to compete against rookie Robbins.

And not sure what broader political climate you are referring to. If people think he shouldn’t get a job because he was falsely accused of doing something which he was ultimately exonerated of, then that’s not politics, that’s idiocy and cruelty.

  12. He was there.

Being unable to prove a gang rape, doesn’t mean he wasn’t there.

  13. Araiza belongs on an NFL roster, but that situation was a hard lesson to learn from.
He should have been way louder proclaiming innocence from the get go.

  14. The Eagles weakest position is punter. This is a no brainer for a team that wants to win the Super Bowl now.

  15. He needs to pull a Johnny Depp and countersue just to clear his name. Doesn’t matter if he gets a dime from her. Just having the legal victory would be worth enough.

  16. Guy did nothing wrong he wasn’t there if I was him I would counter sue the woman I mean he has already lost a yr of his career

  17. The NFL has plenty of players that were actually guilty of this or that currently on rosters but it’s only when talent exceeds the weight of the possible distraction. He may be innocent but,he’s only a punter. I wish him good luck.

  18. It’s a shame the situation is “polarizing”. He was wrongfully accused. Hard evidence shows he wasn’t present during the incident. Hard video evidence shows the “incident” was most likely consensual. Character witness evidence shows the plaintiff to, if I’m being nice, lack moral fiber.

    FREE THE PUNT GOD.

  19. This is a superior punter who can also placekick; who deserves to work, not cancelled. As much as I respect Tress Way of my beloved Commanders, I would be happy if they signed Matt Araiza.

  20. You can blame everyone but he made the decision to go to that party and admitted he had sex with the girl that was gang raped later. Maybe he shouldn’t have had sex with a random at a party? Maybe he should have chosen better friends knowing he was headed to the NFL one day? A few bad decisions can haunt u for a lifetime regardless of how small they feel at the time.

  21. Who will sign him?

    Nfl punting stats 2022
    Lowest average Lowest Net average
    Ind Chi
    Pit NYG
    GB SF
    SF Phi
    LAC GB

One of the above teams may sign him.

  22. Being completely exonerated of a false accusation is a PR problem? Brian Banks was convicted and went to jail on a false accusation and was celebrated and given an NFL shot upon his release after the truth came out. Why isn’t this guy getting the same treatment?

Cleveland doesn’t value Character, maybe they’ll sign him!

I suggest that you read the article, possibly for the first time. Pay special attention to the part that advises Araiza was not even present when the rape occurred. As such, his character is not in question, at least not in regards to this incident.

  24. The police reports seem to indicate that he did have sex with her outside but that she was fine afterward based upon her own friends statements. If that is the case, the worst thing he did was have sex with a 17 year old who told everyone she was 18 at a college party where it is reasonable to assume everyone is 18 or older. He shouldn’t have to but he may be best off paying her off to get a settlement quickly so the “distraction” is in the past.

He isn’t a QB. Teams may be interested but want to wait until everything is complete. Lawyers could drag it out for years. I’ve hear rumor that they are paid hourly. I don’t think the recently released evidence does anything but make a quick settlement look like he was willing to do what he had to do. I’m sure some will say he should clear his name but unless he is truly a choirboy, he may end up hurting his cause since the girl’s attorneys will be looking to present everything he’s ever done wrong in his life.

Not only should he be signed to an NFL roster but he should receive a VERY public apology from Brandon Beane and the entire Buffalo Bills organization.

Wrong. Beane did what he did because the presumption was that the charges were legitimate. However, now that Araiza has been proven to be innocent of the charges I hope that the Bills or another team will sign him. In a perfect world Matt will resume his career and this will be a forgotten incident as far as he is concerned. Let the man enjoy his career exactly the same as any other punter.

  26. It’s a well known fact, that for years, the Vikings have had problems with punters and kickers. Maybe it’s time they step up for a punter who has no problems, other than being falsly accused? Wouldn’t that be a twist on fate, that could possibly straighten out one of their problems?

  27. There is one thing I’m curious about. Can the authorities actually show Mr. Araiza was not present during the alleged event or is it that they can’t prove he was? I would think this would have a significant impact on the civil case.

  28. So….he looks innocent and remains unemployed while DeShaun Watson is guilty as hell but signed a record deal.

    Yeah, thats justice…

  29. Someone’s gonna take a chance on him. If Michael Vick can get another shot. This guy deserves one too.

  30. Buffalo could help right a wrong by inviting him to training camp and giving him an honest chance to make the team. The guy could at least show if he still has his punting skills. Many teams bring in a punter in season.

  31. What about her? He gets his life ruined because of this money grab attempt, and now the TRUTH finally has its day, and what he has been claiming since day 1 has been validated, and meanwhile she gets what?

  32. The showboating attorney for the “victim” is the person who should be the target of any defamation suit, not Brandon Beane. Having witnessed the media circus in Cleveland, Beane made a business decision that it simply wasn’t worth having an ongoing distraction in the form of a rookie punter. Meanwhile, the lawyer for the “victim” oversold the case to the media, claiming the inaction from SD police and prosecutors was due to athletic status of Arraiza and his teammates when, in fact, it was apparently due to the lack of credible supporting evidence. Attorneys have a duty to zealously represent their clients; but they also have an obligation to be truthful.

  33. We don’t know the conversations the bills had with Araiza behind closed doors.
It’s possible that Matt Araiza understood that this may happen and that if it does he needs to go and take care of it.
Which would mean no bad blood between Matt and the Bills.
Even though the man was innocent and I’m sure he professed it to the bills, I’m sure he understood why the bills had to cut him.
Someone should definitely sign him do you want to talk about a chip on your shoulder this guy is going to have it forever

  34. He should sue her for everything shes worth.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

  35. It’s a well known fact, that for years, the Vikings have had problems with punters and kickers. Maybe it’s time they step up for a punter who has no problems, other than being falsely accused? Wouldn’t that be a twist of fate, that could possibly straighten out one of their problems?

This is a great comment from my fellow Bills fan. He is right, if your distraction exceeds your talent, you will not be on an NFL roster. TO, Kapernick, Antonio Brown etc…on the flip side, if you are super talented you will continue to get chances- i.e. Josh Gordon. I think Araiza will need to punt in the USFL/XFL first and if he blows it out of the water the NFL will come calling.

He was not slandered by the media. News outlets reported the allegations in the civil complaint, along with the attempts by SDSU and the police department to cover up the incident. That is news. It was never reported that he committed the act.

    _______________

Nothing, the concept does not apply here. Innocent until proven guilty applies only in a criminal proceeding. The Bills, any other team, and any private individual can form and state an opinion regarding this matter as they see fit.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Buffalo did not jump the gun. There was no time table for an outcome for his situation. They couldn’t hold a roster spot for him until matters were resolved. Especially not for a rookie punter.

  41. So much for innocent until proven guilty- wasn’t even at the party at the time it happened AND it still took around 9 months to figure it out.

ESPN and the media jumped the gun assuming guilty and not giving him a chance to be proved innocent. I hope he does get picked up.

    ________________

This is not a television show where innocence or guilt is determined in an hour. This is real life. There were hours of video to piece together and at least 35 witnesses that were interviewed. That takes time.

  43. How in tarnation does a legal exoneration become grist for Blue / Red matters? Why does EVERYTHING have to be political? Answer…it doesn’t unless we make it so. Fact is a young man was accused, his career suffered, now he’s been exonerated and should deserve a second chance. Thats IT. Nothing more to discuss.

The police investigation concluded that he wasn’t there, that he left an hour earlier. It wasn’t just that they couldn’t prove he participated in the incident. Who are you to determine that he was there?
