Yes, if teams ever move to London, the Jaguars likely will be one of them

For years, the NFL has dangled a carrot regarding the eventual placement of a team in London. Last year, Commissioner Roger Goodell for the first time suggested that four teams could land in a European division.

So where will the four teams come from? If/when that ever happens, one of the teams will likely come from Jacksonville.

I know, Jaguars fans. You don’t want to hear it. I wouldn’t want to hear it, either. Folks in St. Louis didn’t want to hear it when the handwriting of an inevitable L.A. move was spray painted on the wall.

In this case, it’s not spray paint. It’s an etching in stone. The Jaguars play in London, year after year after year. If any team has a fan base in London, it’s the Jaguars. This year, they’ll play there twice.

If any team goes for good, and unless the teams would all be expansion franchises, who else would it be? The Jaguars are the logical choice to relocate.

It’s not an opinion as to what could be or should be. It’s an acknowledgment of what already has become, one game per year at a time. As of this year, two games at a time.

Maybe, for the Jaguars, it would start as a joint custody arrangement, with a split schedule of home and away games. The Jacksonville Jaguars of London. The LoJack Jaguars. The Hounds of the Jacksonville. To name a few.

Unless the league’s talk about putting teams in Europe is only talk (and until talk becomes action, that’s all it is), something will eventually happen. When it does, how can anyone think it won’t happen with the Jaguars?

  1. This will be an interesting discussion. We have a lot of people here who constantly state that the owners have the right to run their teams as they wish. If that is true, then those people have to acknowledge that Shad Khan can move his team to London if he wants to.

  2. At the very least, UK fans won’t be calling them the Jag “wires” like yokels over here, right?

  3. The entire concept of having a single team anywhere in Europe is, frankly, ridiculous.

Setting aside the travel costs, the fatigue that the players on a team like that would suffer is ridiculous. The only way that it would possibly work is for such a team to have extended “road trips”, playing 2-3 games on the road in a row, to reduce jet lag and the general fatigue of all of the travel. That introduces all sorts of other issues – longer times away from family (assuming family move with them to Europe), extended hotel stays, finding practice facilities etc…

  4. They can change the name of the league to IFL (International Football League).

  5. A BIG hurdle for an NFL team to move to London is the British taxes are very high.
No player with options would want to play there because of this. This can be overcome and as a Jags fan I have a sinking feeling that soon when they need a new stadium it will be built in London and not Jacksonville.

  6. If the NFL truly yearns to expand to other countries; not only does Jacksonville to London make sense, but so does LA Chargers to Mexico City, and Buffalo Bills to Toronto. But it gets more complicated when we talk about expansion. If the Jaguars move while adding new teams to a newly formed London division – the NFL will need to seriously realign the current divisional settings. How can it work with 4 AFC divisions, 4 NFC divisions, and 1 London division (will that new London division be AFC or NFC)?

  7. “The Jaguars play in London, year after year after year. If any team has a fan base in London, it’s the Jaguars.”
    ———
Not sure that’s an accurate assumption. Most years they haven’t been very good so although maybe their fans are more familiar with jaguar players as theyve been subjected to bad games that doesn’t mean they have a fan base.

  8. If that is true, then those people have to acknowledge that Shad Khan can move his team to London if he wants to.
    __________

The flip side of that is the bigger long-term concern. What happens if somebody moves to London (or they put an expansion team there) and in short order decides it’d be more lucrative to move the team elsewhere? TV money is locked in no matter where a team plays meaning things like attendance, taxes and stadium deals are the main variables. Is it more likely a team would get a stadium handed to them in London or a football-hungry team over here? Taxes in Europe will be far higher and what if attendance doesn’t hold up after the novelty wears off?

  9. Putting a team overseas will be the end of the league, players will threaten to retire.

This is an American League. Period.

  10. Ok, so you can put 4 teams in Europe, but what player is actually going to want to live/work there? There’s no way, a European team would be able to lure a high profile free agent.

  11. They’re my team and I will miss them but the constant, unrelenting thirst for money by the NFL has dulled my ardor. If they go, good luck to them. I will miss Game Day but will still have TV until all games are some sort of pay per view and then I’ll buy a small boat and just go fishing with friends on Sundays.

  12. “…as a Jags fan I have a sinking feeling that soon when they need a new stadium it will be built in London and not Jacksonville.”

I believe Shad Khan already owns Wembley Stadium.

  13. “Ok, so you can put 4 teams in Europe, but what player is actually going to want to live/work there? There’s no way, a European team would be able to lure a high profile free agent.”

This seems a little naieve. Tons of uber rich F1 drivers and Soccer players call London home. These atheletes are MUCH better paid than NFL stars. London is a very desirable place to live, at least temporarily during a short football career…

  14. We have such billionaire thirst in America, but this is proof positive that the vast majority of them will just sell us all out and go to a different country if they think it’s better for their bottom line.

  15. That’s just Jacksonville’s luck. Pederson will build them into perennial AFC favorites then Khan will repay all the die-hard fans by moving them out of the country.

  16. “It’s not an opinion as to what could be or should be”. That’s rich.

  17. This isn’t even a revelation. They volunteered for this long ago because Kahn wanted this market when it became available full time, and if American football works in Europe it was a smart business move. More likely though it’ll be the “joint custody” deal. Maybe the first 4-5 home games in a row in London so there’s not a lot of back and forth and then move back to Jacksonville for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. The biggest issue this creates for them though is that they’ll never get a dime from Jacksonville for a stadium without total transparency that they’re going nowhere.

  18. There won’t be multiple teams in London. It couldn’t even sustain a single NFL Europe team as the Monarchs folded a few years before the rest of NFL Europe shut down. Germany has always been the most American football-hungry market and the preoccupation with London by Goodell has always been rather bizarre. The biggest black eye imaginable for the NFL would be launching in London and having that franchise struggle and shortly seek to move. That’s also why relocating a team is a dicey move. It’s way easier to get the locals into a team if it starts out as their own rather than some hand-me-down. Beyond Khan owning the Jags and (possibly) wanting them in London what would draw a Londoner to embrace them?

  19. I can’t stand this. It was American money that built this league. Fans buying tickets, jerseys, t shirts, key chains, dog hoodies. The list goes on and on and on. From the very first game that was played, it stayed afloat and prospered, all be cause of American money. Money that fans had to work darn hard to come by. It’s an American League, it’s the fans’ league, and once AGAIN, Goodell and the owners prove, they don’t give a damn.

  20. In reply to earlier comments, Shad Khan does not own Wembley, nor will he ever. Other than West Ham who inherited the Olympic Stadium at a knock down rent, English stadia are paid for by the owners, no chance of public money whatsoever. And the Jags are no more popular in London than a dozen other teams, including Packers, Patriots, Steelers, Dolphins. Against a big team there is no home field advantage at a London game, the crowd just wants to be entertained and their support swings from team to the other as circumstances change.

    ————————

The Bills series in Toronto was a financial and PR failure. Unlike the Chargers and Jags, they have a long-term, established fanbase and a wealthy owner with local ties. The Toronto Bills died with Bon Jovi’s failed bid for the team.

To the person saying no players would go to London because of taxes, that’s ludicrous. There’s legit reasons players might not want to play in Europe, but by your logic the Texans and Dolphins would get all the free agents and the Bills, 49ers, Rams, etc never would. That’s not the case here. Paying taxes on multimillion dollar contracts still leaves you with multimillion dollar payouts.

  22. Just stop. I realize this is an “IF” article, but it’s like you’re trying to force Fetch to be a thing… just stop. I think the more likely scenario is Khan taking his profits (currently like 5X his purchase price) than moving the team.

This said, my opinion is COMPLETELY different if the city gives him grief about the stadium and surrounding development plans. If things go as planned, they aren’t moving to London. Just stop, it’s really getting played out.

  23. Young, rich athletes—even Americans—would be at least as happy to play and live in London as in Buffalo, Green Bay, or Indianapolis. London (and other major European cities where the NFL might set up a team) have the kind of nightlife and social life that draws rich athletes to places like NYC, Miami, and LA.

And while the top UK tax bracket is 8% higher than the top U.S. tax bracket, the UK doesn’t have the equivalent of state income tax. So an athlete based in any state with a top income tax of 8% (like New York and California) will be paying the same tax bill in London. And moving to Europe opens a bunch of endorsement opportunities for the athletes based there, especially since it’s likely the NFL will heavily promote them to ensure the move succeeds.

  24. I do not see any foreign government building a stadium for an NFL team. Owners will need to pay for it. It one thing for someone to check the game out like I did recently with Rugby, but will they support consistent US level ticket prices? None of the venue’s I have seen on TV have the volume of suites the new stadiums have it the US.

  25. I think the Jags moving to London is inevitable and has been since Shad the mustache took over. It seems the easiest way will be for only the Jags to move. And then later, a team will either move to Mexico City, or it’ll be the Chargers to Mexico. Then it’ll be two expansion teams wherever will generate the most revenue. Germany sounds like it’s eager for a team. And I know MANY other American cities would LOVE to host a team. 32 teams is temporary and I can see this league changing dramatically over the next 10 or 20 years and into the future. And to the “America only” fans, you’re on the wrong side of history for one simple reason: Football is great and fans are everywhere on the planet.

Your point about Toronto not working out before is moot. NFL Europe didn’t work out before either, and that hasn’t stopped the NFL from continuing to force London down our throats.

  27. Khan is investing millions of dollars in downtown Jacksonville. He would not do that if he was going to move the team. Tell me again how many millions of dollars the owners of the Rams invested in St Louis before moving? Thought so…

  28. No way in heck that happens.
Good ol’ Gov. DeSantis just needs to claim imminent domain over the Jags and take over the team.
He can do that because he can do anything he wants.
He run the team and get rid of all the “woke” players.
They better hope he doesn’t want to ban the playbooks.

At the very least, UK fans won’t be calling them the Jag “wires” like yokels over here, right?

    ——/——/——/——/——/

Apparently you’ve never heard how the British pronounce the word “Jag-U-ar”.

  30. I’d love to see some market research. Like if you stop a random Londoner and mention “Aaron Rodgers” and “Lamar Jackson” without any context are they able to easily place who they are? And the Jags play there every year… how much knowledge does the average Londoner have of their players? That’s the sort of info that would tell you a lot in terms of how popular a team would be there long-term.

  31. If Shad Khan were moving the team to London why would he build a $120 million training complex? If the Jaguars were moving to London why would he invest millions into the Shipyards project next to the Stadium? Come on this is lazy speculation by someone that should know better. That Jaguars have brought HOK on board to design the upgrade the to the stadium. The Mayor has gone on record as saying he is on board, the City Council support the upgrade it will happen. The lease will be signed the Jaguars will not be moving, period, end of story, thank you next.

  32. I think any European move is at least a decade away. That being said, I can see teams using the leverage it presents to get stadium and other deals done. Jax is looking at playing somewhere else (likely in 2025 and 2026) based upon a 2 year renovation that I believe Khan is partially funding. I would think playing a certain number of games/seasons would be part of the contract in order for the city agree to its financial obligation to the renovation.

  33. Well considering Khan is currently building a Four Seasons hotel directly across the street from TIAA Bank Field and is about to open a new $150 Million Jaguars Training Facility this offseason next to TIAA Bank Field. Oh and Khan is currently planning a $Billion makeover of TIAA Bank Field…….. I don’t see this happening!

  34. Yeah, Jacksonville’s spending over 800 million to renovate the stadium, of which Kahn is investing heavily, not to mention the 100’s of millions he’s investing in downtown renovations. Sure, he’s going to move the team to London, so tired of this rhetoric, pffft.

  35. I still think the ‘right’ thing to do (if we assume a 16 game pure 8 home, 8 away season is never coming back) is to get rid of the 9th home/away game and make each teams ‘extra’ game at a neutral site, that’s 16 games of which you can place 4-6 in Europe (London, Germany, maybe somewhere else), a couple each in Mexico and Canada and the rest in US cities that don’t have a team. As a bonus it also gives the league something to ‘give up’ in the negotiations about an 18th game…
