2023 NFL schedule opens with Lions at Chiefs

The Detroit Lions will face the Kansas City Chiefs in the traditional Thursday night opener of the NFL season.

As usual, the Chiefs get the first home game of the season as the defending Super Bowl champions. The decision to make the Lions their opponents shows how much optimism there is coming out of Detroit that this could be the best Lions team in many years.

Last year the Lions won eight of their last 10 games and this year they return most of the key players from last season, including quarterback Jared Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions are favorites to win the NFC North, a division they’ve never won since the NFL’s 2002 realignment.

But the Chiefs will certainly be favored to beat the Lions in Week One, and will be the favorites in almost any game they play as long as Patrick Mahomes is healthy.

The 2023 NFL schedule kicks off on Thursday, September 7 at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

  1. So much for the notion of having the NFL season kick off with a marquee matchup. NBC must be thrilled.

  2. Wow. Thought for sure it would be a rematch with the Eagles! Welcome to the Big Time, Detroit! Been a long time coming!! CHIEFS!!

  3. Mahomes is almost recovered from his ankle. Should be close to fully recovered by the game vs the Lions.

He will be strong and Willis Reed through the injury though.

    So inspirational.

  4. The Lions had a horrible draft, they still have no QB and they have lock room troubles with their star WR suspended. This is an easy win for the Chiefs.

  5. Nice to have actually been scheduled for a prime time game this year! Hope my Lions are ready!

  6. Brand New Lions get to put the league on notice from the jump. Let’s bite some kneecaps fellas!

  7. Nothing like whacking all their off-season hype before the season even starts for the rest of the NFL.

  8. Not gonna say the lions will win this but they gave Buffalo all they could handle on thanksgiving, and went on the road to knock a streaking Green Bay team out of playoff contention even though the lions had nothing to play for.

Dan Campbell will have his guys ready. If the chiefs go into this game with the same attitude as most of these comments, the lions could shock the world.

You may even get a 2nd prime time game, but the shield will make it early in the year. The NFL is starting to realize that late season prime time games with teams that have long since been eliminated are bad for business.

  10. I like what Detroit has done, but man is the league setting them up for a fall. The Chiefs are going to murder them, and for a young team like that, their season could go sideways and never recover.

  11. I don’t get it.News trickles out before the schedules are released to build excitement?I don’t think so.

  12. Lot of Lions haters in here, that’s pretty hilarious. They have a good roster and good coaching. Spoil their SB party week 1

  13. Chiefs have a decent run defense but not a great pass defense. If we are able to run the football on them and get after Mahomes on defense we definitely can walk out of arrowhead with a win!

  14. Somebody must have hit the wrong button on the computer to have this game spew out as the marquee opener.

  15. Our secondary can lockdown the chiefs wrs. At that point it’s stop the run and contain Kelce. He will get his catches just don’t let him go off. With our strong secondary now the pass rush will get home expect Mahomes to get hit a ton that game. Both teams are good football teams with the Lions this game sets the tone. Do we say well we almost beat the super bowl champs like in past years or do we actually go out and do it.

  16. I don’t know what people are complaining about. The Lions play an exciting style of football and look to be trending upward.
A ‘marquee’ matchup for week one is a waste anyways. It’s better to save the better games for later in the season when teams should be playing their best as the playoffs approach.

  17. Needed a team that was going to be an easy starting win for Superbowl Champs.

  18. I like what the lions have been doing, but I’ll take Reid at 16-8 and mahomes at 5-0 in season openers.

  19. This is not the way the Lions want to start, they won’t have their #1 WR until week 7.

Pretty poor choice by the league here for the season opener.

  21. Wow. I’m bullish on the Lions, I think they will win the division, but that is NOT the matchup you open a season with. That would even be ho-hum on a regular Thursday night. All this hype about the task of schedule making and this is what they come up with?

Lol, horrible draft? Obviously you need to re-think that. It was a very good draft, 4 probable impact starters, possible qb of the future also.

I get where you’re coming from, but the Lions started 1-6 last year and I think that’s a lot worse than 0-1 against the Super Bowl Champions.

  24. Last years opening game was the Bills blowing out the Rams 31-10. This will be a better game because both teams can score points. It should be a fun watch.

  25. NFL scheduling must be above my pay grade. Not following some of these Chiefs games. They move Tyreek’s return from Arrowhead to Germany, and now the first game of the year is the Lions?

    ____________

It’s what being a Lions fan is all about, nothing ever goes right. I think one or two picks were decent, but overall very below average draft. I think we need to get a QB to replace Goff sooner than later. He is supposed to be temporary and drafting an old injured QB is not going to get us into the post season when Goff fails.

  28. orinswift2,

It’s going to be harder this year because everyone will see them coming. I understand the league’s thinking because the Lions were a fun team to watch last year, not to mention the Goff/Mahomes Monday nighter his first year starting, but this is throwing them right into the fire. Ask the Cardinals how that went last year when you think you’re an up and coming team.

  29. The Lions won 8 out of their last 10 games and are up and coming. But, there were much better options with the Eagles, Bills and Bengals on KC’s schedule. I personally was hoping for a SB rematch to start the season.

  30. Lets be real here it doesn’t matter who the Chiefs play since they are the SHOW.
The schedulers got it right in the sense that they did cast a Darkhorse by many to make some noise in the NFC this Season. Who did march into Lambeau field and beat the Packers and kept Aaron Rodgers from getting to the PLAYOFFS in Prime time….

I did NOT care to see the Eagles Rematch since its way too early remove from the Super bowl,, also the same with the Bills and the Bengals, Those are games we can all let MARINATE during the Season.

  31. Two of the top two offenses to start out the season. The NFL must have like the ratings the Lions produced in the last game of the regular season.

  32. It’s understandable that many will laugh at this game because the Lions have been…laughable. But, they were 4th in points scored last year and they’ve only gotten better on that side of the ball. And, their Defense has been upgraded on the back end.

These kids don’t give a crap about their past history. This one should be fun.

  33. What happened to a competitive game for the opener?? Are they really falling for the ‘Lions are good now’ hype? They couldn’t even put together a reasonable draft and they stunk last year! I swear, between this and the Chiefs/Dolphins game being yanked from Arrowhead, the NFL is proving more and more that they really do hate the fans. What a disappointment! Chiefs 38 Lions 13.

  34. To me it’s not about whether the Lions are good. It’s about this being as close to a zero-stakes game as can be imagined. Non-division, non-conference, if either team is going to lose any game this season, this is the one that would hurt them the least.

If the Lions win, it’s a moral victory but will have very little bearing on their division & conference race. If the Chiefs win, it’s of course, they should win. So low stakes and little impact. THAT’s why it’s a bad opener.

  35. I bet right now the Lions brass may be rethinking their decision to go with a running back with their first choice rather than Jalen Carter or one of the top cornerbacks to help out their 29th ranked defense from last year.

  36. Any one remember how the Packers were gonna kick the Lion’s asses last game of last year in a flexed game where Detroit had nothing to play for? Detroit also came close to beating mighty Philly in 1st game last year. They don’t back down. This opening game choice could in part recognition of that last game effort, along with all the overall good vibes surrounding the Lions.

Let’s get the hard W’s out of the way early.

    Go Lions

    _________________

Who there buddy, you better realign your “hard” W’s…..you won’t go anywhere without beating the Packers, Bears and Vikings first. The Bears made huge improvements and you can’t beat the Packers now that Rodgers drama has been erased. You might squeak a win against the Vikings because they took a huge hit after last season’s flop.

Good Luck with your over confidence!

  38. The Lions had a horrible draft, they still have no QB and they have lock room troubles with their star WR suspended. This is an easy win for the Chiefs.

    ____

Buddy – Goff was literally the best quarterback by QBR the second half of the season. Our star WR is still playing – St. Brown. They also didn’t have a horrible draft – top in terms of total talent acquired across all rounds. Also we played Philly first last season and barely lost. Anything else you want to be wrong about?

    ________

No doubt! The Lions didn’t address their shotty defense enough. They were to busy drafting old and injured QBs in the draft. So L0Lions!!

  40. The NFL brass sees exactly what Detroit Lions fans see. The Top up-and-coming team in the league. The Lions defeated the Packers to keep Aaron Rodgers out of the playoffs on the very last game of the regular season in a standalone primetime game.

The Lions put the league on notice with a huge win by knocking out the defending Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs on Banner night…Lions 41 Chiefs 27. A pssing of the torch game to the eventual 2023 Super Bowl Champion Detroit Lions.

No one cares what the Lions did last year with their fluke run on consecutive wins. Stop painting a false picture like anyone even cares. The Lions have made some improvements, but are far from being in the same convo with the Chiefs, let alone any team in the division. The Lions should be focused on small steps, start by winning the division or even making a playoff appearance.

bahahahahahahaha, how long did it take you to come up with this garbage. Just because the NFL decided to give the Lions a prime time game that automatically makes them a top tier team after 70 years and ONE PLAYOFF WIN???

I can’t wait for them to get their teeth kicked in during this game and the Lions fans use the schedule or refs as an excuse. It’s like clock work for 7 decades.

  43. We will see… bookmark this page so I can laugh in your faces when the Lions defeat the Chiefs opening night . Bank on it.

  44. MCDC will have the boys ready to play don’t be shocked when they go into arrowhead and punch the Superbowl champs in the mouth. All roads run through Detroit!
