Jacksonville mayor: Renovations at stadium could force Jaguars out for two years

At a time when the Jaguars are increasing their workload in London, that workload could become even larger two years from now.

Via David Bauerlein of the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry said during an appearance on 1010XL radio that renovations to TIAA Bank Field could force the Jaguars to play their games elsewhere for two seasons.

And Curry called that “the best-case scenario.”

Bauerlein explains that this is the first time any public official has said that renovations to the venue would displace the Jaguars. It’s unclear where the Jaguars would play their Jacksonville-based games.

“The goal would be to play somewhere in Jacksonville,” Curry said. “Those discussions are happening, but two years is the goal. . . . I do know that they are considering certain sites that are local that could accommodate them for at least two years.”

Curry suggested that, under the current timeline, the Jaguars would be impacted in 2025 and 2026.

Capacity, and in turn revenue, would be critical to the assessment — especially since the Jaguars could pack the stands, and stuff their coffers, with revenue by moving one or more of the Jacksonville games to their home away from home, a long way from home.

The news comes at a time when, as we noted on Wednesday, the doubling of the team’s total games in London next season makes it even more clear that, if any of the current 32 teams would be moved to across the Atlantic Ocean to fill out a four-team European division (and barring four expansion teams at least one will), the Jaguars are the top candidate to go, by far.

If the Jaguars are knocked out of their current Jacksonville venue and if there is no suitable alternative in town, the choices would be Orlando (141 miles away) or London. While it might be locally popular for the Jaguars to openly nudge the decision toward London, it would be a surprise if they abruptly and immediately rule out the possibility of playing somewhere between more and all of their home games in England for those two years.

Through it all, the team’s lease in Jacksonville runs through 2029. Which opens the door to a full relocation at the end of the current decade.

  1. Ruh-roh.
Orlando by far makes the most sense for most practical reasons based on reality. And that’s why the league will send them to England for two years, probably playing in 4 different cities. Heck, split the home games between 8 different cities across England and Germany while you’re at it

  2. Why don’t they build a brand new stadium? Stay in current stadium until new one is finished, then tear old one down. I believe that is what they did in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
Also, let’s quit the talk of a four team European division.

  3. Lenny Curry will be out of office in a few days – elections are next week and he can’t participate – and will not have any saying in this matter. I would trust Jason La Canfora more…

  4. No American players are going to want to play for a team in London. Silly.

  5. The London Jaguars. Has a nice ring to it, especially since Shahid Khan has made it clear that all he cares about is the bottom line.

  6. I could build a new stadium in 2yrs. Just as the Jags become relevant again too. I suppose Orlando makes sense but there is also Gainesville and FSU.

  7. Work something out with the Florida Gators. The Swamp is only an hour or so away. Holds 85000

  8. lots of other teams do renovations without displacing their team. To me, this is an intentional ploy to move the team to london, with a built in excuse.alot of fans will be duped just as they are by the representatives they elect

  9. This would amount to a full rebuild of the stadium. If that is done there is no way they would move.

A much better option for both England and Germany is for the league to simply increase the number of games over there to 16 total. 16 games would have each team playing over there once per year. It would allow for maximum flexibility between all international sites and avoid the issues involved with having a permanent franchise or division over there.

  10. This is definitely the start of a soft-breakup. “Oh yeah Jacksonville, we will for sure be back, yeah two years, we promise…”

  11. The time of small market NFL teams might be ending. The league has outgrown them.

  12. Why renovate a stadium for a team that may not be there in 7 years? I would hope Jacksonville gets a written commitment from Khan and the NFL that they are staying.

  13. As far as NFL stadia go, the Jaguars’ home isn’t perfect. Once you’re in your seat, the experience is fine. But the corridors fans take to get around are oddly narrow in a lot of places. But… moving to London is so dumb. Every away game for the London team is going to be the worst travel schedule any team has to deal with. Playing on a Sunday and Thursday in the same week will be rough if one of those games is anywhere in America. Yes, the NFL will make a fortune is if can create a “local” fan base an English city. But the players aren’t getting anything extra out of the deal.

  14. Just be honest. Is that asking too much? People, don’t fall for this. If they want to move the team to London, just do it. We can handle the truth. See what happens when we start accepting lies? Now it’s becoming the new American way. Crazy.

  15. Play the Florida games in Gainesville. Only an hour and a half away. Problem solved.

  16. If they end up moving, it better not be London. It would be a logistical nightmare for everyone involved and would lead to a massive decline for the fans, players, and the organizations. This is an American sport.

  17. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (where the Gators play) holds around 90,000 people and is closer than Orlando. Lacks the big population center and a meaningful airport, though.

  18. Can the city not just pause renovations during the season and then resume in the offseason? New Orleans found a way to make that happen

  19. If they are looking to renovate the stadium to the extent that it will take two years to complete then I doubt they’re moving anywhere. The biggest issue with teams relocating is stadium issues. Owners don’t dump money into facilities that they plan on leaving.

  20. Not just Orlando. They could play in Tallahassee (FSU), Gainesville (UF). This team is not relocating to London.

  21. Why not just expand the number of teams here in the US? As hard as they try to sell Europe as a destination for expansion the logistics and time difference just doesn’t work.

  22. That must be some renovation they have planned! Other teams and colleges with bigger stadiums are able to renovate in stages during the off-season. The mayor should require a long-term lease extension before they turn one shovel of dirt. Otherwise, watch the Jags play in London for two years, while Kahn pays off the remaining three years of said lease.

  23. The mayor is extremely unpopular and will be out of office in a few months. I would take what he says with a grain. The stadium issues with the Jaguars is being hanged off to the next mayor. My guess is the team will come out in the next couple days and say what the mayor said is incorrect. He mentions them playing games in Jacksonville. That’s just not possible.

  24. I’m so glad Baltimore got the old Browns team and not this clown show expansion organization.

  25. Very coincidental timing on the Mayor’s part! Anything interesting about the Jaguars pop up in the news in the past day or two?

  26. The NFL may want a European division, but they’re still pretty far from making that happen. Also, if they think they’re moving to London, why renovate their stadium?

It will be interesting to see, someday, if Europe will actually embrace a full NFL season of games – from multiple teams, no less.

  27. You could probably get 40000 at Hodges stadium with temporary bleachers, there would be no parking issues but facilities would be basic. Ben Hill Griffin stadium in Gainesville seats 90k and is only an hour away, that might be an option too. The talk is of doing an upgrade akin to the one that they did at Hard Rock stadium (canopy over the seats etc). If that’s the case the Dolphins were able to play the home games as the stadium was being renovated so I am not sure why the Jags could not do the same. HOK were the ones designing the upgrade in Miami and the same company has been brought on board by the Jaguars.

  28. No other place in Jax? This place was suppose to be football crazy. Also who is flipping the bill here conservative Florida? No owner would pay for a stadium he plans on leaving? Sounds crooked to me.

  29. TIAA Bank Field, although not recognized as such is the second oldest stadium in the NFL behind only Soldier Field. Built in 1927, it was partially replaced and fully remodeled in the ‘90s for the Jags. So, it’s definitely time for a new building.

In the meantime why not Tampa? NFL ready stadium, major airport. Plus, I live in Tampa and it would be nice to have a good football team in town…

  30. A simple online search shows that the Jacksonville Jaguars had a higher home attendance than 7 other NFL teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. This has been the case for several seasons despite the Jaguars losing records since probably 2017. A winning team in Jacksonville will be a non-stop sellout. Maybe Pitt, Mia, NE, Indy, Wash, Vegas or Cinn should be moved instead as they have less attendance than Jacksonville.

  31. Gainesville would make sense but I’m not sure if UF would find the endeavor worthwhile given all the additional logistics of hosting two games on some weekends.

What many seem to miss in this is that any agreement by the city and the Jags to rebuild the stadium would be contingent on a new lease with the city. The current one ends in 2029.

So there’s two ways it can go. Either they actually get a deal done and that stops the Jags to London or wherever else talk for a few decades. Or they trot out a bunch of expensive options but never come to an agreement on the public contribution amount, making the Jags a free agent in 2030.

  32. I would argue that the Jaguars would be better served by playing home games in Gainesville or Orlando during whatever renovations take place at the stadium. They need to build out a regional fanbase outside of Jacksonville, and ingratiating themselves in those two towns — neither of which poses any threat whatsoever as far as poaching the team from Duval — should go some ways toward that effort.

I totally understand the reasons why Shad Khan is so obsessed with London, but really, that city has become such a cash cow for the NFL and its 31 other teams that it’s possible the league might not want a new-ish owner (relative to NFL history) basically bogarting the whole market for himself.

  33. If it’s in such disarray that it needs two full years to renovate then I wouldn’t want to be around it now in fear it’s going to collapse. That’s if I take him at his word.

  34. Seems very unlikely team and city would spend close to a billion dollars to renovate to a brand new stadium in an expedited time frame two years just for them to move to London.

I think what the Mayor was trying to say is that the City and team want this done as quickly as possible so renovations are not dragged out 4 or 5 seasons.

There is no way the City would foot the bill for this full stadium renovation without Guarantees of a long Lease extension.

If Kahn wanted to move the team would have already done it but instead pouring in millions of his own money to develop around the stadium.

And if you would have done a quick internet search you would know the Steelers have sold out every home game since 1972. SMH.

Travel to London is no different for the Jags than traveling to the West Coast. It is a few hour’s flight. Modern transportation has evolved from the days of the Mayflower.

Not sure what flipping the bill means, but I certainly know who will not foot the bill in anti-business Florida – Disney.

  38. “No American players are going to want to play for a team in London. Silly.”

Lol guess you’ve never been to London. It’s a fantastic city with great fans. If I was an NFL player I’d far rather play there than in places like wretched Minny, Cleveland and some of the other crappier NFL cities.

  39. The team’s move to London will create a rancorous branding nightmare because the Jaguar automobile remains the world standard for quality avoidance and occasional dependability. Time to think of name changes. London Tories? London Broil? The London Wens? The London Smoke?

  40. Living in Orlando… it would be cool to get them.

The parking in Jacksonville is BEYOND terrible.

  41. The problem with using a college stadium is that it’s going to be hard to avoid back-to-back games during the season, which would possibly leave the field in less than ideal condition.

These London critics have never been outside of the United States. They’ve never even been out of their one stoplight towns.

  43. Let’s get down to what’s really important: will Madden 26 and Madden 27 have these changes reflected in the game!?!?!!? Hmm…

  44. This guys shouldn’t even have been given a microphone. Jacksonville is electing a new Mayor in a few days. Curry is terming out..

Yeah, I know, I was just baiting you. My point is that there is not an attendance problem in Jacksonville. This is a narrative promoted by the media and the uninformed for some reason. Yes, there were tarps across the (now full) corners of the upper decks for a few years but this was done to “reduce” the stated capacity of the stadium to circumvent the blackout rules then in existence. Yes, attendance was a problem, too, but it was a down cycle for the team, you can look at Tampa Bay before and after TB12 for an example of a down cycle.

  46. Wonder why the city of Jacksonville would commit any money to the stadium if there’s any possibility they’d be losing the team to London. I have to think they’re aware of some agreement that a certain number of games will be played in London every year. As for the 2 year window, that would be a good time to trial a 4 game in London deal. Maybe 2 to open the season and 2 in the middle of the season. The rest of the home games could be in Gainesville working around Florida’s schedule if Daddy DeSantis says it’s ok to conduct business there..

London is awesome, but you’re talking about young men that aren’t well traveled and forcing them to leave the country and their families through the draft. I don’t think that would go so well. I’ve often wondered how NBA and MLB players thought about getting drafted to Canadian teams, this would be much more impactful.

  48. what logicsl thinking human trusts the Jags ownership?
the same folks who think roger is a truth serum seller.

  49. Jacksonville is only 2 hours from Orlando. They would do really well here. Play a couple games in London and the rest in Orlando. Win win.

  50. Well.
Move to Central Texas. Between San Antonio and Austin the TV market, total HH’s and avg income and growth blow JAX metrics away. The Texas Coyotes -pronounced Ky-Yotes. Makes $ sense right? Texas ownership to include: Musk, Dell, Rogan, HEB, USAA and Valero.

  51. If Nascar can convert the Coliseum into a race track why cant the NFL convert Daytona into a football field?
