Todd Monken: We want to take some of the offensive burden off of Lamar Jackson

The Ravens signed quarterback Lamar Jackson to a new contract because of what he can do on the field, but new offensive coordinator Todd Monken said on Wednesday that the team doesn’t want him carrying the entire offensive load.

Baltimore added wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Nelson Agholor, and Zay Flowers to an offense that already featured players like Mark Andrews, Rashod Bateman Devin Duvernay, J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and Isaiah Likely in an effort to surround Jackson with as much talent as possible in 2023. While discussing the offense, Monken made a reference to baking and said cookies taste better with sugar than vinegar so you want to “surround yourself with sugar” on offense.

“I think the more talented you are around your quarterback, the less he has to burden — take on that burden — shoulder the load, because you’re excited about getting others the football where they can utilize their skill set,” Monken said, via the team’s website. “As you get further into your career, as Lamar gets older — as everybody does — you want to take some of that off of the player as best you can. But he has a unique trait, a unique skillset. You can’t take that completely out of his toolbox because that’s a huge weapon for him and for us, is using his feet.”

Jackson said he wants to throw “for like 6,000 yards with the weapons we have” this season. That may be more sugar than even Monken is planning, but there’s a lot of room to bake a sweet offense even if Jackson doesn’t set any records at the helm of the Ravens’ new offense.

  1. Every single one of those receivers is gonna be unhappy.

Lamar runs the ball and throws to big players in the middle of the field (Andrews). Why in the world would they surround him with a bunch of Smurfs?

  2. lol – you’re paying him to be elite…but taking away opportunity to become elite.
can’t wait for him to get hurt again this year so you can see the “value” you’re getting

  3. $50 million plus per year and still not expected to carry the load.
What a farcical statement about the player and the team.

  4. I look forward to the media blaming the new OC and teammates when Lamar has issues with throwing forward passes.

  5. The Ravens built up their offense to protect Lamar. If he’s a running QB first and foremost, he’ll continue to get injured on a regular basis just as he did the past couple of seasons. Now that he has options we’ll finally see if Lamar can be more a conventional QB. I have my doubts, he’ll need to read defenses and consistently throw with accuracy and I’m not sure he can do either at the required level.

  6. I’m quite sure what he is really saying is that their offense cannot merely be if Lamar’s primary read isn’t there, tell him to run. It’s definitely exciting to watch not doubt, but you’re not winning a SB light that.

  7. They’d be stupid if they weren’t working on some plan to keep him upright for 17 games.

  8. The problem is that he’s only an effective passer when he’s a threat to run. So, the entire offense needs to be based on that threat. It may be counterintuitive, but the way you reduce the burden on Lamar is by running more (with an actual running back).

  9. How long before OBJ is standing 15 yards down field with his hands on his hips showing Lamar up for not pulling the trigger when he was open ? When he prefers M.Andrews over the middle for 8 yards instead of deep out to OBJ that requires precision and timing?

It’s going to be fireworks. Not the good kind.

  10. 6th best offense with Lamar Jackson and 31st without him. The only reason they weren’t 32nd is that Dobbins finally got healthy as he only had 35 carries In the first 12 games. No other QB does more with less. No other Offense would drop more than 20 spots missing their QB.Elevating your teammates to this extent is the definition of elite. He was a one man offense. With help I would not be surprised to see them win the superbowl.

  11. They gotta keep him healthy and they could have a good offense. I could see Pitt and Baltimore battling for the number 2 spot in the AFC North.

The Bengals only won the division the past 2 seasons because Jackson was hurt. If everyone is healthy I can see them finishing 3rd behind the Ravens and Browns.

  13. Doesn’t make any sense. They paid made him the richest player in the league. Put all of the burden on him. That’s why he got paid.

This notion that Lamar can’t read defenses is ridiculous. Last summer Lamar was ranked 3rd in the NFL at best decision making, only behind Tom Brady and Aaron Rogers. His running game is predicated on the fact that he knows where the defense is. He’s also near the top in passing percentage. I’m sure you think he can’t pass because he’s just not flinging the ball all over the field, which is typical of most fans, and putting up the big numbers. I’ll take wins over that any day. And honestly, I believe Lamar is going to light it up this year and quiet all you haters. The same people that have been criticizing his game ever since he joined the league. You can have your QB that can’t make good decisions or run.

No. He got paid because he is 45-16 despite having all the burden on him. I don’t think any other QB could have carried an offense by themselves as well as he has. No its time to build something around in order to win a superbowl.

  16. Since Lamar took over, every single WR drafted was highly rated and believed to be no-brainers and big contributors in the offense. None of them have produced. And here comes the next one, Zay Flowers. When he doesn’t produce, will it be his fault too? Hhmm, I wonder if the QB has anything to do with their failures.

Hollywood Brown was a decent number #2 WR And Bateman has barely played. Jackson was the 5 graded pff QB playing almost exclusively with WR picked off the Streets. Can any other QB do that? The QB is elite.
