Report: Tom Brady in “deep discussions” to become a Raiders limited partner

Tom Brady can’t quit football.

Sure, he won’t be playing (yet) for the Raiders, but he could soon be an owner of the team.

ESPN reports that Brady is in “deep discussions” with Mark Davis to become a Raiders limited partner.

Per the report, talks have been occurring “for weeks” and could soon reach a resolution. ESPN calls is “an extremely sensitive and fluid negotiation” — but not sufficiently sensitive and fluid for ESPN to look the other way, as it did last year when Brady was in “deep discussions” to become a Dolphins limited partner (and one or more reporters at ESPN surely knew it).

Last year, that secret plan was a precursor to Brady playing. This year, it likely wouldn’t be. That might not make Jimmy Garoppolo feel any better about the Tommy shadow continuing to follow Garoppolo around.

ESPN says Brady would be a “passive” investor, with no “operational control or authority over the club in business or football matters.”

That’s not a surprise. Minority partners rarely if ever have any actual control or authority. For Brady, it’s a way to turn some of his money into more money, given the non-stop growth in franchise value.

It’s a safe, strong, reliable investment. Then again, Brady probably thought the same thing about FTX.

Oh well, one out of two ain’t bad.

  1. Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest with his broadcasting job?

  2. In 2022, the LVR franchise value amounted to around 5.1 billion U.S. dollars. I would have to think Brady would have to contribute at least 1% to be a limited partner. $51 mil.

  3. Combined with its recent signing of quarterback Brian Hoyer, Las Vegas now has 15 former New Englanders either on its roster or in primary management. That list also includes head coach Josh McDaniels, general manager Dave Zeigler, and players like Jimmy Garoppolo, Chandler Jones, and Jakobi Meyers. And now the perpetrator of the “Heist on Ice” to become an owner Tom Brady. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Las Vegas Patriots.

  4. FTX offered to pay Brady more than his career football earnings for a couple commercials

  5. First a small fraction with condition to option more based on 12 starts to gin the pump. Haven’t heard of a waiting list in Vegas yet…

  6. Wow, I’d be pissed if I were a Raider fan. Is nothing sacred with Billionaires?

  7. Is there any evidence that Brady was an actual investor in FTX? Or was he merely appearing in ads? I seriously doubt that someone as smart as Brady lost a penny in the crypto scam.

  8. Given Brady’s current luck (or lack of same) with matters off of the football field, his investing in the Raiders will either trigger the Raiders’ financial value to drop, or trigger a drop in value of all NFL franchises. Hard to see that happening, but Brady does seem to have a reverse Midas touch thing going lately.

  9. I seriously doubt that someone as smart as Brady

Brady is smart? He actually thought smashing his cell phone to cover up his cheating would let him get away with it. That’s not something a smart person would do.

  10. Maybe the Raiders fans will finally move on from the Tuck Rule. It was a stupid rule. It should have been a fumble. But it was officiated correctly.

  11. How would Brady work for Fox if he is part owner of a team? Who would want to talk to a guy with interest in the outcome of games?

    No it wasn’t.

  13. This would be good for the Raiders and football in general.
    _________

From a pure publicity standpoint, sure. But minority owners don’t make any decisions so absolutely nothing would change other than you’d see him in the box at the occasional game and he’d do interviews on stuff he wouldn’t even have final say about.

  14. What happens when you leave Davis and Boy Wonder to their own devices? The LV Patriots Retiree Tour happens of course…

  15. Let’s not forget it was only a couple of months ago that Brady bought a minority interest in the WNBA Las Vegas Aces, again with Mark Davis being the majority owner. These two guys seems to want to be in business together. I’m guessing talks about becoming a Raiders part owner grew out of the Aces situation, and it means he’ll play for the Raiders about as much as his Aces ownership means he’ll play with them.

  16. Brady is smart? He actually thought smashing his cell phone to cover up his cheating would let him get away with it. That’s not something a smart person would do.

Smart people do not believe in such nonsense. Run along Benny.

  17. Good for him. After a 20 year career and 3 legitimate super bowl wins, outside of scandel, he deserves it.

  18. Maybe Brady will end up being the General Manager of the Raiders. I can’t see Patriots fans being happy about this development.

  19. Oligarchs are the most dangerous people in the world.
    ——————

Are you just making a statement? If you think either Davis or Brady are oligarchs you need to go back to school.

  20. Does anyone else feel that Tom Brady is missing out on what he really should be doing? A competitive drive like his is not going to be satisfied with a job sitting literally on the sidelines talking about other people’s performance. Brady would thrive in a personnel role, and I think he would love it. Ownership would preclude him from doing that with anyone else besides the raiders.

Coaches/GMs often bring players from their previous team. Here’s your example: Sean Payton has hired 7 coaches who worked for him at some point in his career and also signed 6 former Saints players. This is not something new.

  22. Tom must be suffering from a guilty conscience from lying about the fumble so long ago. Seriously, any help he could give the Raiders would be much needed and appreciated. One of Marks Davis’ greatest needs is help with football personnel decisions and vision. Tom would bring that and much more.

  23. He owned them on the field all of those years, so this is a logical step.

  24. With Tom’s investment history with shady characters (like SBF), he better do a deep dive into the Davis family and Raider’s org. What are tax implications when Carol passes.

  25. As a multi-millionaire recently freed of the restrictions of both marriage and the NFL, Las Vegas might be the perfect place for Tom Brady right now.

  26. I grow weary of people mentioning ‘conflict of interest’ in regards to potential ownership positions and media (e.g. Brady and Bezos). This storyline is a red herring.

A conflict of interest occurs when an individual’s personal interests – family, friendships, financial, or social factors – could compromise his or her judgment, decisions, or actions in the workplace.

As a limited partner, Brady would have no decision authority at the league level (he may have some within the team) and his decision authority as a broadcaster would be limited to the production content, not business decisions. The potential for a conflict of interest as a broadcaster is completely mitigated by not having him call Raider games.

  27. Smashed cell phone? A total myth by the way. The tuck rule? Videotaping? We’ve got some people who need to quit living in the distant past.

    _____________________

We’ve got some people who need to research what is an actual conflict of interest. Owning a minuscule part of a team with no control has absolutely nothing to do with Brady’s broadcasting job. It does not mean that he has any interest in the outcome of any game. The value of his investment does not change based on the outcome of any game.

If you honestly believe that happened I cannot help you. However, if you truly interested in knowledge, perhaps you should research the Inert Gas Law.

  31. To those asking about his job as a broadcaster – One, he wasn’t going to be taking that job this upcoming season anyways. Two, if this deal with the Raiders, or some similar deal with another team goes through, obviously he’ll just tell Fox, “sorry, no can do”. Limited partnership with a team will almost certainly be more lucrative than the Fox job would have been.

  32. wow so the guy who got his career rolling with a fluke call against the raiders (tuck rule BS) is now moving in to own a piece of them. hmmmmmm.

  33. Why wouldn’t TB or anybody else for that matter not want to own a piece of the cash cow known as an NFL team? I know that I would. Wouldn’t you?

From all that we have read, in addition to his competitiveness and desire to excel, TB has historically loved being one of the guys, of enjoying the vibe of a locker room.

In the short term, it’s not a stretch to imagine that Josh and Jimmy wouldn’t benefit from TB’s “informal” insights and observations.

In the long term, maybe TB hopes to stoke his competitive fires by eventually getting involved in an executive position in football operations, perhaps even following John Elway’s lead with the Broncos.

If I were a Raiders fan, I wouldn’t give a flip if TB became a minority owner, especially if he helped my team win a conference championship or Super Bowl; it would be the least he could do after tucking us.

  34. Plenty of elected representatives were all in on FTX as well. Funded a lot of races.

  35. Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest with his broadcasting job?

    ———————————-

Why would this be considered a conflict of interest ? Just wondering.

  36. So? He becomes a ghost minority partner with no input on team ops. Pop goes the lolipop.

  37. The problem with the tuck rule plate isn’t the rule itself.

It’s the fact the call on the field was fumble. The burden of proof then has to be on the replay showing conclusive evidence that by rule Brady had NOT completed a tuck allowing an overturn. There was none. Looked like he had 2 hands on the ball. Call should have stood. Fumble.

If the call on the field was incomplete pass only then you can say right call bad rule. That didn’t apply here.

As an honest Patriots fan I can admit the Raiders were screwed. And that’s fine, the Patriots were screwed on roughing the passer 25 years ago which was just as egregious. So call it even.

Nope. Brady admitted it in his testimony to Goodell. The court also noted the admission as something that didn’t help his case.

  39. Tom has been reported to be buying a piece of the Dolphins. Now he’s trying to get a piece of the Raiders.
I just wonder why hasn’t Mr. Kraft hasn’t offered Tom a piece of the Patriots?

Even if ball deflation didn’t happen that night… that does not explain the smashed cell phone or the text messages talking about deflation and a guy calling himself deflator.

Those things simply don’t happen if there was nothing to this.

  41. Brady’s never going to announce a game for Fox. It was Fox trying to show that it was “fine” after Aikman and Buck left.

But as a Raiders fan, I hate the Patriotization of the Raiders. It makes me sick.

  42. I really don’t see what the upside is for a limited partner. The cash flow after the buy in pays less than a bank savings account and you have no control whatsoever.

What also happened was 7 years of illicitly videotaping the other teams defensive signals by Patriots employees wearing “Kraft Production” or “NFL Films” t-shirts. Don’t forget using cameras with broken lights that kept filming when people thought they were off. Those things happened. We saw the ESPN report from Don Van Natta on it.

  44. So, is he investing in the Raiders because it’s the cheapest option (relatively) of the 32 teams?

  45. It’d be kinda funny if he started complaining about the Tuck Rule game.

Goodell did not hear any sworn testimony.
And I’m sure that you are privy to the conversation (not testimony) between Brady and Goodell. I’m also sure that you read the court record.

For future reference, courts do write opinions using words like “didn’t help his case”. Using total fabrications is not helping you make your point.

Never said it was those exact words but that sentiment was in their decision. Google it and be informed.

Brady testified that he smashed his cell phone to Goodell. It was not made up. You tell me why a guy with binging to hide would do such a thing.

Very true and I love how the Brady cult tries to tell us Brady didnt benefit from 7 years of taping defensive signals, it was only the coach that benefited. 😂

You mean that ONE text during the off-season in May? What a smoking gun. The NFL was never getting his phone so it’s a moot point. The other thing is if Brady was texting the ball boys they would have the texts. Just because Brady “destroys” his phone it does not erase all digital content out there.

  52. Does this mean that Mark Davis will also get a hair transplant, a chin job and Alex Guerrero is going to help him with “pliability”

This isn’t the 90’s…phones today can store an awful lot of data…more than just texts. What was Tommy trying to hide from the investigation? It had to be something. Proof of cheating on Gisele? A ball deflation scheme? How about evidence of PED use? You can imagine Tommy didn’t smash his phone by accident. He was hiding something for sure. Clearly he calculated that it’s better to smash his phone and leave a lot of questions out there than have the investigation discover something that would severely damage his reputation and legacy. Like police getting a search warrant on a home but the homeowner burns down the house instead of letting the police do the search….

Ironic hearing that from the Tommy internet defense force 😂😂😂

  57. No question Brady took air out of the balls. My company destrots all PCs and cellphones when replaced. Too much propietary information on the devices. What would TMZ pay for Brady’s phone?

  58. And if you read the Wells report – and I doubt the cult did- you’d know that the league never was going to take the phone away and make a copy of it they just wanted Team Brady to search the phone themselves for certain words and let the investigation know what they found. A perfectly reasonable request.

So much for the excuse that Brady didn’t want personal or intimate and private information leaked. That had zero chance of happening.

So draw your own conclusions why he smashed his phone knowing the investigation wanted it. I’m afraid it doesn’t look good on Tommy boy. 😬

Do you or do you not post multiple times on every Brady article and post about him on articles that have nothing to do with him? I can answer. Yes you do. Brady owns you.

  61. My company destrots all PCs and cellphones when replaced. Too much propietary information on the devices.
    ________________

And your company uses a professional service that specializes in destroying such devices. They don’t take them out in the parking lot and smash them with a sledgehammer like these people fantasize about Brady doing. If Brady wanted to destroy a phone he would likewise take it to a professional to insure that the data was entirely eradicated.

  62. Once again, this did not start with “The Tuck Rule.” It started in in 1976. The Pats went 11-3, making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. The team ranked second in scoring offense and third in turnover differential. The Pats led the league with 5.0 yards per rush, and had not lost a game since October. Then came the Ben Dreith playoff game on December 18th, arguably the most egregiously one-sided officiated game in the history of the NFL. With Pittsburgh decimated by injuries and the AFC vastly superior to the NFC that year, the Raider-Patriots game was the de facto league championship game, and the Patriots were arguably the best team in the league, having decapitated the Raiders earlier in the season 48-17, and former Raiders admit the Patriots were an excellent team that man handled them. The playoff game was in Oakland. The Patriots were ahead, and close to closing out the game. Then came one of the worst calls in NFL history….roughing the passer….it was 3rd and 18 and Stabler tossed another duck, but was saved by the Refs. That put Oakland on the goal line with another chance to win the game. Back then, touching a QB above the shoulders was roughing, but it wasn’t meant for incidental contact. Referee Ben Dreith, whose name must not be spoken among long time Patriots fans made that fateful call and was never allowed to officiate a Patriots game again. The patriots were apoplectic and distracted, and the Raiders punched in the winning score.
Raider players later admitted that they got lucky and the Patriots likely would have won that game. The window of opportunity got shut, and the frustration kicked off 20 years of futility for New England. Yes, it still bothers me to this day. I remember exactly where I was standing when I heard the call like it was yesterday. I was standing in the side yard splitting oak rounds by hand with a maul and wedges to heat the house, heard the call by Gil Santos, and couldn’t believe it. I listened to their analysis and then saw it on the news. It was egregious. Fast forward to Jan 19 2002, and the tuck rule game. I thought it was a fumble, but we got saved by an obscure call by the referee, and this time it kicked off 20 years of NFL Mastery. It was 25 years of suffering for us before 2002 so by my count, we won’t be even until January 19th 2027. And that’s just to get back to even. I want more.

  63. Brady smashed his cell phone just two or three days before he was scheduled to meet with Wells, according to Dead Spin…if he didn’t want to hand the phone over he just should have kept the phone intact and refuse to hand it over. Why smash it around the same time you meet with investigator? This is the guy who is going to be an analyst on Fox?

  64. Why smash it around the same time you meet with investigator?
